What the fuck?! He wasn't even that old? I loved his talk show. Just like Graham, he could have a rapport with anyone. And was so kind outside of drag as well.

I saw him perform as Lily Savage at a club in Manchester many years ago. My friend worked there, so I was able to attend the after party. He was in his element, and was non- stop hilarious.

Oh man, is he the guy who does all the shows from Battersea dog and cat home? Great guy.

His eulogy for Cilla Black

I'm pretty sure he was a heavy smoker.

Cilla Black is not a DL icon.

He had an extraordinary working class life before he found fame. Used to work as a carer, which he talks about in this interview.

He became dead to me long ago when I found out he and Cilla Black were friends. Only Margaret Thatcher was more of a cunt than Cilla.

Waking up to this news is not a good start to the day. He was a staple of light, family entertainment while I was growing up. Being so quick-thinking and funny while parading around in drag as Lily Savage, I think he did a lot for acceptance of non-traditional men.

He'll be sorely missed.

I agree R19 he kinda bridged that gap in the 90s that made a drag queen a household name and was entertaining without having to hide his edge. In lesser hands it would have caused a real homophobic backlash at the time.

The irony is that earlier in his career he loathed Cilla Black. I saw him on stage and the first 20 minutes or so were given over to one of the funniest, filthiest diatribes against Black. It seemed unscripted as he just went off against her. He was such a talented performer.

Also saw him perform with Aussie comic Bob Downe where he and Savage were supposedly “an item”. He became quite the national treasure and in doing so mostly lost his edge as shown in his close friendship with the odious Black. I wonder if he ever discussed his earlier hatred of Black with the lady herself?

A bit unexpected that he was enormous mates with Queen Camilla.

I read all four volumes of his autobiography. I think they'd make a wonderful mini series. They weren't all "Me Me Me" (cough John Barrowman cough). They're a wonderful gay social history of 1970s and 1980s Britain. He rubbed shoulders with Marlene Dietrich, Long John Baldry, Lindsay Kemp etc.

Didn't he have several heart attacks over the years? His death doesn't surprise me. Did the lesbian he married so she could stay in the UK ever come out of the woodwork?

He's got a daughter and at least one grandkid. As everyone has said: a lovely man. It's very few people who can come across as a friend on TV, but he did.

He was a national treasure. A lovely, funny man with a warm heart and a wicked wit.

The news stopped me in my tracks. One of the funniest and kindest men to ever appear on the telly. A staple of my house growing up in Ireland in the 90s. We all gathered around to see him host Blankety Blank as Lily Savage. My parents would be holding their ribs laughing and most of the jokes would fly over our little heads. His autobiographies are some of the best ever written too.

What a shit way to start a Wednesday. He’ll be fondly remembered by so many but complete pieces of shit like Putin will be live on and on.
