I Can Dream About You is still an all-time fave of mine.

Correcting myself; Dan Hartman was HIV+ but died from a brain tumor.

You know this music is terrible, right?

What's with that terrible video -- "Let's put him behind a bar and have him sing?"
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 28, 2023 12:14 PM |
Says you.

There were spectacular disco songs but wow the video in op's post wasn't one of them. It's the poster child of a terrible song produced with every disco cliche. It reminds me of bad dance music they would play in the 70s buck Roger's tv series when they had club or bar scenes.

Did he do the song "Instant Replay"??? I cannot remember. It was a big disco hit in the late 1970s.

Yes he did " Instant Replay"...and "Vertigo/Relight my Fire" featuring the fab Loletta Holloway was a great Dance floor hit... one of my many faves back in the day

Anyone who doesn't like "Relight My Fire" is dead to me!

'Vertigo/Relight My Fire' is one of the greatest disco/dance songs ever.
You can search for other DL threads about him.

Music peaked during the golden age- ca. 1965 to 1970.

I definitely loved his music back in the day. Still have most of his music on CD. He was diagnosed with HIV in the late 80s and revealed it to no one, and apparently just allowed nature to take its course as he never sought out any sort of treatment. Not that there were any real treatments that did much good back then.

He co-wrote and produced James Brown’s Living in America.

Was he a gay?

No need. His death has long been cited as due to AIDS complications.

Dan Hartman also wrote the epic "Love Sensation" for Loleatta Holloway. A monster of a dance track that has been remixed many times since its original 1980 release. It is also the basis for Marky Mark's No. 1 pop hit "Good Vibrations" and Black Box's No. 1 pop hit "Ride On Time."

Later the year he died, Joni Mitchell (who only infrequently recorded songs by others, not counting her later standards album) did a nice version of his song "How Do You Stop?" for Turbulent Indigo. I took it as a tribute. It seems likely they were friends.

He wrote “I Can Dream About You” which was recorded by a vocalist for the movie Streets of Fire. When Dan heard the recording, he knew it would be a hit so he had the vocals replaced with his own and that’s the version you hear in the radio.
The version you hear in the movie is the same instrumentation but with the original vocalist.

He wasn't in the most widely-circulated video. It featured the performance scene with the Black actors in the movie ("Streets of Fire") interspersed with other scenes from the movie. The song was also played on R&B stations.

Does anyone remember Ricky Martin's version of "Relight My Fire"??? It was released white label to clubs in the early 2000s. It was played quite a bit in clubs but never made it to radio.

In the 1970s before doing solo work he was with the Edgar Winter Group. He wrote and sang their big hit, Free Ride.

No, Rose. He was just happy.

I love "Heart of the Beat" from Breakin', performed with his group 3V.

I also loved Instant Replay!
Everybody headed to the dance floor when that countdown started.
It was also a great song to fuck to - someone told me......

He has some great catchy tunes but I never saw the videos or heard them on my local radio -

Take That also did a cover of RElight My Fire.

R18 I had no idea that was Dan Hartman.
Not sure if they were friends, but the theme fit in with the dissolution of Joni's marriage to Larry Klein, which was the topic of several other songs on the record.
