Gabriel Basso in “The Night Agent”

“The Night Agent,” a new political thriller, just dropped on Netflix. I watched it over the weekend. The dialogue is cheesy AF, and there are a lot of laugh out loud plot holes. Also, while it is supposed to be set in Washington DC, it was clearly filmed in and around Vancouver. BC looks nothing like DC.

What does carry it, however, is the rather restrained performance of the lead actor, Gabriel Basso. He’s rather dishy and strapping. I looked him up, and was surprised that he also played the kid on “The Big C” over a decade ago. Basil has grown into a nice looking man.

I watched 1.5 episodes and was also struck by how bad the dialogue was. Really noticeably, laughably bad. It seemed like the plot might be Ok but the quality of the dialogue didn’t bode well and I decided it wasn’t worth getting invested in.

by Anonymousreply 1March 27, 2023 11:26 AM

OP, it is one of the worst series I've watched on Netflix. Gabriel Basso is great looking, but that's about it. If he escapes one more terrorist bomb or bullet, falling though glass, tumbling through back alleys, and getting beaten to a pulp before getting back up, I don't know what...

Driving out of DC and suddenly he's driving amidst the trees and terrain of the Pacific Northwest, western Canada??

The dialogue is cheesy, the plot is pathetic, the acting at best average....you're right...Gabriel Basso is more than cute!

You forgot to mention the assistant FBI Director with the Ethel Merman, plucked and arched eyebrows.

I was expecting something along the lines of Netflix's "The Bodyguard." Instead, I'm watching a straight to video car chase.

Oh, and the murderous female terrorist and her not-so- vaguely Middle Eastern, garroting boyfriend-accomplice....over the top!

by Anonymousreply 2March 27, 2023 11:37 AM

Any pinga or ass?

by Anonymousreply 3March 27, 2023 11:53 AM

Yes, I can tolerate the bad dialogue if he’s frequently naked or even half naked. What kind of skin quotient are we talking about here?

Guess I’m in the minority, but I really enjoyed this show.

by Anonymousreply 6March 28, 2023 5:59 AM

I watched the first episode because of the lead, but as OP mentions, it's not very good. I was about to give up on the show and then the female assassin is introduced, being campy as fuck (wanting to settle down with her partner and play house. LOL!). The action scenes are nice, nice set up of tension, but the plot in general remains bad.

It's one of those action thriller shows you watch while eating snacks and very likely forget about moments after you finished it.

Does anyone know why the show has so many Asian characters? Chief of staff, police friend, assistants, FBI director etc. - all Asians. Seems like the showrunner or casting director has a fetish. The plot was over the top and unbelievable. I doubt a Vice President would scheme with a sketchy CEO to kill a second rate dictator on American ground and kill thousands of American citizens in the process. Blah.

by Anonymousreply 8March 28, 2023 6:34 AM

Saw the trailer on the Netflix landing page the other day. It looks laughably bad, like a CBS drama series. Seems like solid proof that Netflix is trying to pander to old people and idiot red staters in order to battle their declining viewership.

by Anonymousreply 9March 28, 2023 1:11 PM

I just read Netflix renewed this shitfest for a second season.

I just finished the series and I was fascinated how easy it was to get into Camp David, plant bombs in buildings and Marine One, get into the IT system/building or just randomly walk into buildings with high profile guests and the president. Just jam the communication system and there's hardly any security left. But I guess no one here is watching.

by Anonymousreply 10April 1, 2023 4:28 PM

R6 You’re not in the minority, it’s a huge hit.

by Anonymousreply 11April 2, 2023 3:51 AM

" The plot was over the top and unbelievable. I doubt a Vice President would scheme with a sketchy CEO to kill a second rate dictator on American ground and kill thousands of American citizens in the process. "

I guess you didn't get the Trump parallel.

by Anonymousreply 12April 2, 2023 5:16 AM

I remember him from The Big C. He's like a less attractive Cameron Monaghan

by Anonymousreply 13April 2, 2023 6:06 AM

[quote] “The Night Agent,” a new political thriller, just dropped on Netflix.

It just 'dropped', did it?

As in 'flopped'? Or 'plopped'?

Should I drop it or flop it or plop it into my toilet?

by Anonymousreply 14April 2, 2023 6:30 AM

I got through four episodes last night and had to call it quits. Gabriel Basso is good looking, but that's all the show has going for it. Bad acting, bad wigs - Jesus Christ, Hong Chau's gray mop literally buries her face - and plot holes so wide, Gabriel could drive his SUV through them.

I laughed out loud when the stupid annoying girl, who I wish would get blown away, decided to call Gabriel on the super important night agent's phone just to chat because she couldn't fall asleep, and he carried on a 30-minute conversation with her! Guess it's not all that critical to keep that line open after all.

by Anonymousreply 15April 2, 2023 4:35 PM

What the hell happened to Robert Patrick? He was so hot in Terminator 2!

I know a lot of years have gone by, but man, he looks like he's been binge drinking since 1991.

by Anonymousreply 16April 2, 2023 4:38 PM

I also gave up after 1.5 episodes. Why does this low-level FBI agent report directly to the White House Chief of Staff? Lazy writing.

by Anonymousreply 17April 2, 2023 5:16 PM

R17 He saved all those people on the metro. She believes in him, ya know. She wants to give him a chance.

by Anonymousreply 18April 2, 2023 5:33 PM

The assassins on this show have some of the worst aim I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 19April 2, 2023 5:34 PM

When I saw an ad for this I thought he was Richard Madden at first

by Anonymousreply 20April 2, 2023 5:36 PM

I commend the actors in this for delivering their lines with a straight face.

It’s been renewed for season 2!

by Anonymousreply 21April 2, 2023 5:49 PM

R21 The acting is so bad in this, with the exception of the crazy assassin girl. I so want her to kill that annoying bitch Gabriel is protecting.

by Anonymousreply 22April 2, 2023 5:51 PM

Hong Chau delivers her lines like a robot. I can't believe she was actually nominated for an Oscar this year.

by Anonymousreply 23April 2, 2023 5:59 PM

This is a big hit for Netflix, #1 in the U.S. for ten days. I agree it’s not a patch on the Jed Mercurio thrillers, but as an example of a now-ubiquitous streaming action genre, it’s okay.

My main problem with it is how antiseptic it is — no sexual tension from anyone, including the hunky lead, including when he and the Woman-On-The-Run hook up. You only learn two male actors are having an affair when one touches the face of the other — no kiss, no partial nudity — nothing. It’s like it was written for the geriatric crowd who watches CBS.

by Anonymousreply 24April 2, 2023 6:05 PM

R24 There's a gay subplot? I guess I gave up on this show before that happened. Who?

by Anonymousreply 25April 2, 2023 6:13 PM

r25, snake side tatoo train bomber terrorist and his art teacher terrorist bf.

by Anonymousreply 26April 2, 2023 6:21 PM

R26 The art teacher is hot! I'd turn gay, too, if I had to seduce that butt ugly VP's daughter.

by Anonymousreply 27April 2, 2023 6:27 PM

I thought that art teacher was ugly as fuck and needed to wash his hair.

This was one of the most eye-rolling plots I've ever seen. So many times when I was like, "Oh, of course that happened!"

by Anonymousreply 28April 2, 2023 6:38 PM

Art teacher looked like an unfrozen caveman.

by Anonymousreply 29April 3, 2023 4:48 AM

From the trailer this looked just like that Noah Centineo streaming series about a newbie government official who gets in over his head in international intrigue, but always ends up coming out on top despite his naivety.

by Anonymousreply 30April 3, 2023 5:12 AM

I gave up on that one, too.

by Anonymousreply 31April 3, 2023 5:20 AM

The actress who plays the BP's daughter is Shauna's daughter on Yellowjackets.

by Anonymousreply 32April 3, 2023 5:30 AM

VP's ^

by Anonymousreply 33April 3, 2023 5:30 AM

The art teacher is played by Greyston Holt, who was plenty of nude in the show Bitten.

R34 Nice ass. He doesn't show peen, though.

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2023 10:25 AM

Just finished the season. It was far fetched and cheesy but entertaining enough. The lead is cute but has the strangest gait when he’s walking or running. That’s all I’ll probably remember a week from now.

by Anonymousreply 36April 5, 2023 6:55 PM

It kept my interest, not amazing but good enough to want to find out what happens. When I completed the series Netflix recommended Designated Survivor to me, I got half way through episode 2 and had to turn that shit off, the dialogue. Omg. Cringe. The president son, worst actor ever.

by Anonymousreply 37April 5, 2023 7:06 PM

Gabe holds his mouth like a long time tobacco chewer. And he has a nice look until he smiles and then I get short bus.

by Anonymousreply 38April 5, 2023 7:20 PM

Less attractive than Cameron Monaghan!?

by Anonymousreply 39April 5, 2023 7:30 PM

I really liked it, maybe 3 out of 4 stars. Some of the acting wasn't great, but luckily those were killed off. Gabriel and Luciane did a very fine job. Almost no nudity, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 40April 7, 2023 10:24 AM

R38 What does that even mean? How is he hot BUT when he smiles he looks mentally challenged?

by Anonymousreply 41April 7, 2023 10:51 AM

I watched it. Ridiculous schlop, but he’s totally cute.

by Anonymousreply 42April 7, 2023 10:57 AM

This show is dumb as shit but I can’t turn it off.

by Anonymousreply 43April 17, 2023 1:06 AM

I was going to start watching this tonight.

by Anonymousreply 44April 17, 2023 1:11 AM

He’s so fuckin hot, but it’s typical terrible Vancouver-made garbage.

by Anonymousreply 45April 17, 2023 1:44 AM

He was in the Kings of Summer (great movie btw) with Nick Robinson (of ‘Love, Simon’). Grown up a lot since then! Looks very cute. Is he straight?

by Anonymousreply 46April 23, 2023 7:58 PM

I want to watch this for that hot lead actor, but I didn’t know it was Canadian garbage. If he was getting naked in every episode with multiple sex scenes then I’d give it a shot, but I doubt that’s the case.

by Anonymousreply 47December 26, 2024 12:40 AM

I didn't hate it, so I'm going to watch season 2, when it airs on Netflix, January 23, 2025.

by Anonymousreply 48December 26, 2024 12:58 AM

Yeah I saw the lead during a season 2 promo and that’s what made me interested. Then I googled for shirtless pics and I could barely find any. That means the guy doesn’t even have his shirt off in the first season, which is a complete waste of a hot body. What’s wrong with these people? If I’m making this, I’d have him in nothing but white CK briefs at least once an episode.

by Anonymousreply 49December 26, 2024 3:59 PM

[quote]He was in the Kings of Summer (great movie btw) with Nick Robinson (of ‘Love, Simon’).

He also played JD Vance a few years ago in Ron Howard's HILLBILLY ELEGY opposite Amy Adams (as his mom) and Glenn Close (as his grandma) who was nominated for an Oscar.

Can you imagine that Hollywood cast this sexy fuck as JD Vance. Vance must have had Aretha Franklin’s publicist.

by Anonymousreply 51December 26, 2024 4:30 PM

I really enjoyed the first season, and was pleasantly surprised that they renewed it and decided to make it into a regular (as opposed to limited) series. While I'm no fan of faking D.C. in Canada, I think it's reasonable that the first season was shot on a budget (with a then-unknown lead), plus it seems they upped the budget for S2: I gather it's set, and also filmed, mainly in NYC, with at least some location shooting in Thailand.

And no, I cannot imagine Basso as the loathsome JD, but I guess he has an impressive acting range!

by Anonymousreply 52December 26, 2024 4:34 PM

Anyone know about his dating history?

by Anonymousreply 53December 26, 2024 4:56 PM

I watched the first episode of season 2. Lots of scenes actually filmed in Manhattan. Season one was so long ago, I kind of lost the plot. I have no idea who the older guy he's pursuing is or why or how he got to coach his son. Gabriel Basso is still hot but he's aged. I like it. Some very tense moments, some good performances.

by Anonymousreply 54February 16, 2025 6:24 PM

Is he a Basso profundo?

by Anonymousreply 55February 16, 2025 6:35 PM

He's hot, but basically sexless in the series.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 56February 16, 2025 6:38 PM

The sexlessness is evident from afar. I could tell they’re not using that stud to his full potential.

by Anonymousreply 57February 16, 2025 7:00 PM

Do tell, R57.

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2025 7:06 PM

Shamefully I've watch both seasons. Jesus Christ if that bitch got her laptop out one more time to save the day, I was going to throw something at the TV. Tap, tap, tap, and she had the Columbia Professor. So ridiculous!!

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2025 9:36 PM

I’ll have what he’s having.

by Anonymousreply 60February 16, 2025 10:05 PM

Isn't it funny how you can always tell when something is filmed in Vancouver?
