Gabriel Basso in “The Night Agent”
“The Night Agent,” a new political thriller, just dropped on Netflix. I watched it over the weekend. The dialogue is cheesy AF, and there are a lot of laugh out loud plot holes. Also, while it is supposed to be set in Washington DC, it was clearly filmed in and around Vancouver. BC looks nothing like DC.
What does carry it, however, is the rather restrained performance of the lead actor, Gabriel Basso. He’s rather dishy and strapping. I looked him up, and was surprised that he also played the kid on “The Big C” over a decade ago. Basil has grown into a nice looking man.

I watched 1.5 episodes and was also struck by how bad the dialogue was. Really noticeably, laughably bad. It seemed like the plot might be Ok but the quality of the dialogue didn’t bode well and I decided it wasn’t worth getting invested in.

OP, it is one of the worst series I've watched on Netflix. Gabriel Basso is great looking, but that's about it. If he escapes one more terrorist bomb or bullet, falling though glass, tumbling through back alleys, and getting beaten to a pulp before getting back up, I don't know what...
Driving out of DC and suddenly he's driving amidst the trees and terrain of the Pacific Northwest, western Canada??
The dialogue is cheesy, the plot is pathetic, the acting at best average....you're right...Gabriel Basso is more than cute!
You forgot to mention the assistant FBI Director with the Ethel Merman, plucked and arched eyebrows.
I was expecting something along the lines of Netflix's "The Bodyguard." Instead, I'm watching a straight to video car chase.
Oh, and the murderous female terrorist and her not-so- vaguely Middle Eastern, garroting boyfriend-accomplice....over the top!

Yes, I can tolerate the bad dialogue if he’s frequently naked or even half naked. What kind of skin quotient are we talking about here?

I watched the first episode because of the lead, but as OP mentions, it's not very good. I was about to give up on the show and then the female assassin is introduced, being campy as fuck (wanting to settle down with her partner and play house. LOL!). The action scenes are nice, nice set up of tension, but the plot in general remains bad.
It's one of those action thriller shows you watch while eating snacks and very likely forget about moments after you finished it.

Does anyone know why the show has so many Asian characters? Chief of staff, police friend, assistants, FBI director etc. - all Asians. Seems like the showrunner or casting director has a fetish. The plot was over the top and unbelievable. I doubt a Vice President would scheme with a sketchy CEO to kill a second rate dictator on American ground and kill thousands of American citizens in the process. Blah.

Saw the trailer on the Netflix landing page the other day. It looks laughably bad, like a CBS drama series. Seems like solid proof that Netflix is trying to pander to old people and idiot red staters in order to battle their declining viewership.

I just read Netflix renewed this shitfest for a second season.
I just finished the series and I was fascinated how easy it was to get into Camp David, plant bombs in buildings and Marine One, get into the IT system/building or just randomly walk into buildings with high profile guests and the president. Just jam the communication system and there's hardly any security left. But I guess no one here is watching.

It just 'dropped', did it?
As in 'flopped'? Or 'plopped'?
Should I drop it or flop it or plop it into my toilet?

I got through four episodes last night and had to call it quits. Gabriel Basso is good looking, but that's all the show has going for it. Bad acting, bad wigs - Jesus Christ, Hong Chau's gray mop literally buries her face - and plot holes so wide, Gabriel could drive his SUV through them.
I laughed out loud when the stupid annoying girl, who I wish would get blown away, decided to call Gabriel on the super important night agent's phone just to chat because she couldn't fall asleep, and he carried on a 30-minute conversation with her! Guess it's not all that critical to keep that line open after all.

What the hell happened to Robert Patrick? He was so hot in Terminator 2!
I know a lot of years have gone by, but man, he looks like he's been binge drinking since 1991.

I also gave up after 1.5 episodes. Why does this low-level FBI agent report directly to the White House Chief of Staff? Lazy writing.

This is a big hit for Netflix, #1 in the U.S. for ten days. I agree it’s not a patch on the Jed Mercurio thrillers, but as an example of a now-ubiquitous streaming action genre, it’s okay.
My main problem with it is how antiseptic it is — no sexual tension from anyone, including the hunky lead, including when he and the Woman-On-The-Run hook up. You only learn two male actors are having an affair when one touches the face of the other — no kiss, no partial nudity — nothing. It’s like it was written for the geriatric crowd who watches CBS.

It kept my interest, not amazing but good enough to want to find out what happens. When I completed the series Netflix recommended Designated Survivor to me, I got half way through episode 2 and had to turn that shit off, the dialogue. Omg. Cringe. The president son, worst actor ever.

I want to watch this for that hot lead actor, but I didn’t know it was Canadian garbage. If he was getting naked in every episode with multiple sex scenes then I’d give it a shot, but I doubt that’s the case.

Yeah I saw the lead during a season 2 promo and that’s what made me interested. Then I googled for shirtless pics and I could barely find any. That means the guy doesn’t even have his shirt off in the first season, which is a complete waste of a hot body. What’s wrong with these people? If I’m making this, I’d have him in nothing but white CK briefs at least once an episode.

I really enjoyed the first season, and was pleasantly surprised that they renewed it and decided to make it into a regular (as opposed to limited) series. While I'm no fan of faking D.C. in Canada, I think it's reasonable that the first season was shot on a budget (with a then-unknown lead), plus it seems they upped the budget for S2: I gather it's set, and also filmed, mainly in NYC, with at least some location shooting in Thailand.
And no, I cannot imagine Basso as the loathsome JD, but I guess he has an impressive acting range!

I watched the first episode of season 2. Lots of scenes actually filmed in Manhattan. Season one was so long ago, I kind of lost the plot. I have no idea who the older guy he's pursuing is or why or how he got to coach his son. Gabriel Basso is still hot but he's aged. I like it. Some very tense moments, some good performances.
