You have to die or have serious public legal issues - even murdering somebody isn’t a career killer. If you’re a rapper for example it just benefits you. I think what we often see when someone fades after one scandal is that they never had a real fanbase to begin with and were just being propped up by the industry or their connections. So the second the industry side panics, they completely fall without any real audience to support them.
