An indication of the successful terrorizing of the Florida academic system by Ron DeSantis even with his "Stop WOKE Act" yet to be implemented.
Florida student's 'discomfort' causes cancellation of civil rights class

Republicans triggered by history. By people learning what this country did to black people.
Nazis.

I don’t know why this isn’t getting more attention. This is incredibly dangerous.

First the statue of David, now this. Oh, Florida!

If people don’t want to be made uncomfortable how can they learn? I’ve seen concentration camp documentaries in my college classes. Uncomfortable and hard to look at yes, but it’s something everyone should witness at least once in their lives to understand the truth of that horror. Now it appears one person’s complaint shut down exposing students to the ugly realities of human history.

I think people like this feel bad about themselves so they're trying to make themselves feel better with some ridiculously whitewashed history.
But they'll never feel better. They'll just feel worse and worse because they're garbage and they know it.
And so they'll get even more sensitive and "discomforted" by anything that reminds them of how shitty they are. Like the existence of black people.
It's narcissism pure and simple.

Isn't this the party that mocked "trigger warnings" and wears t-shirts saying "fuck your feelings"? I guess every accusation really is a confession with them.

R6 yes that's the ridiculousness and emptiness of Refugs, nowadays. It's only chaos.

[R2] Marxists triggered by facts and reality.
Fascists.
Fake comments as always I see. Yawn!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 25, 2023 1:05 PM |
The student should have been told "if you don't like it, leave." The other students shouldn't be deprived of learning history.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 25, 2023 1:05 PM |
No one can ever whitewash or wash away reality. This ugliness cannot be handwaved or wished away. Uncomfortableness be damned. The Florida student's discomfort is infinitesimally insignificant against the constant abuses African American slaves endured for 300 years.
These atrocities existed. This "man's inhumanity to man" continues to exist.
Figuratively pressing one's fingers in their ears or like a little kid creating white noise to evade this ugliness will not work.

Now that there are sparkle pony, sensitive-to-the-touch college students on the far left, and the far right, perhaps failing colleges can choose a side and specialise for one camp or the other. Hell, one college could build a wall through the campus and do the right wing buttercups on one side, and the leftwing daffodils on the other.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 25, 2023 1:11 PM |
Here’s the other thing I don’t get. Historically, K-12 was the subject of “think of the children,” where the parents could lobby (pressure) the school board and have this sort of stuff happen, although obviously it’s a whole other dangerous level today. However, college, even state schools, were relatively hands off. What happened to going to college to expand your mind, choosing the classes you take, listening to perspectives other than your own, etc. If a student doesn’t like something discussed in a college course - suck it up, debate it, or drop the course, no?

MLK referred to himself & black as “negro.” Kids today object to that term.
Weird that they have no problem with “qu**r.”

Troll, blocked.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 25, 2023 1:16 PM |
How is it being taught? Is it a simple presentation of facts and conclusions or is it presented in a way that makes (mostly) white kids feel personally responsible for things they had no part of or control over? I don't think it's healthy to make current generations take on the guilt of past actions. Absolutely educate them about history of course but this modern way of laying blame at the feet of the new generation is really shitty.

I’m hoping this has the opposite intended affect and the youth rebel and teach themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 25, 2023 1:23 PM |
Your nuance is important R15. But the media will never investigate and report on that. It's all binary outrage nowadays.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 25, 2023 1:29 PM |
R15
It’s very hard to discuss civil rights without addressing race. They want to ban all discussion of race, meaning teachers can’t teach why Rosa Parks boycotted and the segregation Jackie Robinson challenged (for example, these are targeted books).
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 25, 2023 1:33 PM |
R15 is remind that there are instances in which teachers "teach" grievance instead of political economy and history. Meaning they have a party line and try to persuade students to a "bias" interpretation of history and politics. Obviously there are bad and good actors in history, more or less universally agreed upon. But you might get teachers with lowish IQ, middling educations, arguing for present day accountability and culpability. Let's say you're a teacher in SF and the topic of reparations comes up. A free house and millions to every black San Franciscan today. Due to historic discrimination of some kind. And the students are debating this but the teacher says, "Obviously the reparations are the morally correct action today and everyone must pay the taxes to do it."

R19
It’s actually largely smart young people putting 2 and 2 together and realizing that if the Japanese and Jewish got reparations, why didn’t ADOS?
It’s strange that anyone can look at history and demonize the word “reparations”. People are acting it’s some new idea but it’s something ADOS have always fought for.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 25, 2023 1:51 PM |
R15's question misses the point that for the right, ALL discussions of race and history are attacks on white people

Charges of guilt or personal responsibility are how right wingers leap to conclusions in order to represent it in the worst way possible. The white supremacists behind these claims don't want any of the history taught at all.

And don't adults often act like spoiled, petty children? What's your point?
I'm curious to know just who made the complaint.

R20 all DLers are supposed to know your insider lingo ADOS.
American Descendants of Slavery
Payments of $5 million to every eligible Black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.
Interned Japanese Americans received $20,000 in reparations and a formal apology by President Reagan. Their descendants received nothing of course.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 25, 2023 2:04 PM |
Also this “what’s in the past is in the past” argument is BULLSHIT because the past has shaped the present. Relics of segregation still exist to this day and several injustices against ADOS continue on.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 25, 2023 2:04 PM |
R26
So it’s your fuck up opinion that ADOS should receive nothing for the years of segregation and shit policies like the systematically targeted War on Drugs that have further destabilized black communities? ADOS have never been real equals in this country, and anyone who looks at the facts even today can see that.
It wasn’t just slavery. ADOS face injustices to this day and

Has MSNBC done any segments with the same degree of concern for the amount of fired college professors & policy changes that have been instituted because of liberal/leftist "discomfort"? Accuse this post of trolling all you want to, but these instances are prolific & have gone largely unreported by outlets like NBC, CBS, ABC & CNN. Evergreen College is one prime example. The law professor who lost his job due to black students complaining about the use of the n-word in a question about a law case concerning as such is another example. How effective can a lawyer be if he or she is triggered at the mention of certain words? Let's all grow up a little. Or how about the professor who lost his job because of his students who filed a complaint after he used a Chinese expression that merely sounded like the n-word? These are true occurrences & there are many more like them. If we're going to express outrage & point fingers at politics for feelings of "discomfort" it's only going to be meaningful if it's done uniformly. Otherwise, anyone who picks & chooses the validity of someone else's discomfort is only ensuring that eventually everyone's "discomfort" will simply become political, immature fodder.

Sure, reparations, I'm not against. And is one city paying 30 million per adult enough, or should the state add another 60 million per adult, and the Federal government 100 million. So will about 200 million per adult be the correct amount for ADOS? I'm sure all non ADOS in the USA are going to sit well with this. Won't make any feel uncomfortable.

White fragility makes me uncomfortable, and therefore I need to learn about the genocide of Native Americans, Slavery, Black Suffrage, the Civil Rights movement, etc...
Not learning about these things forces me to live with the uncomfortable white fragility that surrounds me.
