There's a retired guy in my neighborhood who rides around every day on his adult tricycle. It's a spiffy looking trike. Kudos to him. I don't know that I would have the aplomb to pull it off at any age. Most people around here zip around in golf carts. He marches to the beat of his own drummer, good for him.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 22, 2023 4:50 PM |
Well there is Sebastian, He goes to an adult daycare program for 6 hrs everyday. When he gets home he rides a tricycle around the neighborhood taking orders for candy and snacks. If he approaches you and you do not order from him he gets very hateful and throws a fit. Creeps me out.

I'm watching the PBS series "Jazz" by Ken Burns on Hoopla. I'm wondering when Hoopla decreased its monthly plays from 10 to five. This does not sit well with me. In other news, I've noticed that the left side of my right big toe is rather brown and crusty. I'll squirt it with Windex and hope for the best.
I hope that I've sufficiently underwhelmed you, OP. Or would " insufficiiently underwhelmed" be more applicable in this case?

R57, I hope everything is OK.
There's a phenomenon called "White Coat Anxiety" or something like that. If you get a little nervous at the doctor's office, you may experience an elevated BP. I think that's why doctors have you go into the room with a tech who takes your pressure and then they take it. I listen to a calming meditation on my FitBit app or just breath calmly with my eyes closed before entering the office.
Sorry if this is whelming to some.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | March 31, 2023 12:16 PM |
I don't like Panda Express, either. I have to admit that the orange chicken that I had several years ago was decent. It had a nice crunch and the sauce wasn't over-the-top sweet. Like I said earlier, though, the fried rice is super-bland and boring. How do you fuck up fried rice.

For lunch I threw a few Mrs. T.'s pierogies in the air fryer, spritzed them with a little avocado oil and air fried for the recommended time on the package.
I should have invested the extra time and just done my usual parboil and then fry. The exterior was cardboard-y. I've yet to be wow'd by anything out of the air fryer. I find the air fryer best for reheating things. Pizza, pasta, meatloaf, anything I've frozen such as casseroles and homemade or bakery cookies.

R95 here. My dental appointment went great. Very little tartar or plaque. As usual, I have a small section of gums that requires extra attention. That's great considering I'm 61 and bad teeth run in my family. Five years ago, my I didn't just have 'pink in the sink"; it practically ran red. It's never too late to take care of your teeth, DL.

Anyway, I really want to avoid false teeth & caps and all that.

R111, I totally understand. Before the age of 13, I had something like 12 cavities. Once I turned 18, I didn't visit a dentist until my 30s when I had dental coverage through an employer. I've had gum surgery at least 2x, 4 root canals, and wisdom teeth removal.

My cousin the lawyer came by today. She said I should replace my Fiesta Ware as it is too "heavy" and as I get "older" I might injure myself. She's concerned there would be no one to help me should I injure myself what with me being an only child and partnerless and childless.
I informed my cousin the lawyer that foot loose, fancy free and childFREE me was thinking of making some changes to my Will. I'm concerned I'm leaving too much to impertinent cousins and too little to the dachshund rescue and other animal charities I support. Could she please draw up the paperwork so I can make those changes??

r133, I"m the one with all the Fiestaware, not my cousin. She wants me to get rid of my Fiestaware as I approach my dotage for safety reasons apparently.
No, r132, you can't have my stuff unless you come and take care of me when I'm old and possibly disabled by a Fiestaware accident.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 9, 2023 7:41 PM |

[quote]Why do people like Fiestaware so much?
I can't answer for anyone else, but I like it because it comes in Turquoise, for which Chartreuse and Navy (Cobalt, Twilight) are nice contrasting colors. Lots of foods go with those colors. I know, I know, everything goes with white, but I came to realize over time that I hate white dishes. I gave away a set of Apilco dishes to someone who was struck poor and setting up a new household. She had always liked my "Williams-Sonoma dishes."

My lunch for tomorrow ( I'm not mentioning breakfast because I don't eat breakfast on Tuesday) is a very large salad which I made with my own pretty little fingers and a vegetable empanada that I bought at a health food store a month ago ( I've had it in the freezer) I will pour a generous amount of marinara sauce on it and that powdered parmesan cheese.

I bought this really nice cheddar cheese from Costco: it's organic and the brand is "Kingdom." It is crumbly and has a bit of the crystalization, like Parmesan. So, I put it on my Costco list to buy, again. Then, I checked the Costco Same-Day website and it looks like damn Costco struck again - stopped selling it, substituted it with Kirkland cheddar.
Costco is really not doing well with its cheese selection. They keep removing good cheeses and substituting their own products, which aren't great. I'm not saying all Kirkland products are not great, but they're failing with the cheeses.

Interesting, R315. I still buy a fair amount of things via eBay. I usually research the prices and email the seller, asking to negotiate a price. (Nothing crazy, I don't want to insult a seller.) Only one seller has said no (they won't negotiate). I always pay right away. Sounds like a no-brainer, but I think a lot of buyers commit to something and then either don't pay or take a while to pay.

Charles' coronation has me thinking about the kings and queens of music.
Michael Jackson will always be the king of pop, Aretha Franklin will always be the queen of soul, Elvis is forever, the king of rock 'n' roll, and like it or not, Madonna will always be the queen of pop.
There is no ascendancy for people coming up behind them.
Even Britney Spears is and probably always will be a pop princess. Even if she were still making music and hadn't gone crazy, she was never going to inherit the queen of pop crown.
So where does that leave artists like Lady Gaga? She is clearly a better performer and actor than Madonna ever was. She's surpassed the title princess of pop. So what is she? Is there an honorific for artist like her, ones that are too big to be a pop princess but not in line to be the next queen?
I'm much more concerned about this than the British royal family.

The second highest consumer is Iceland followed by Finland at 27.7 kilograms and 27.3 kilograms of cheese consumption per capita respectively. I started Ozempic this week, just the baby dose, and haven't been hungry since Wednesday. It's not "speedy" like amphetamines, so not overwhelmed, nor am I particularly underwhelmed, having lost three pounds in three days - unsurprising since I haven't been eating as much and not snacking at all. What was whelming in a good way was seeing my blood sugar go from 221 to 93 in less than an hour after the first, half-strength injection at the doc's office.
What I can't figure out yet is whether its effect is physiological or psychological. Am I eating less because it induces satiety (makes you feel full) faster with less food so you don't eat as much? Or am I taking an expensive medicine that I want to work (mostly for blood sugar control with Type-2 diabetes, not weight loss) so I'm deliberately not eating as much? Too soon to know, I guess.

R353, that's a fantastic idea for a refrigerator feature. Set a lock to prevent eating after 8 p.m., and another to prevent kids snacking after school. I'd buy it.

I made lasagne and decided to wrap squares of it in pairs to freeze and to give away. I'm going to have to soak the pan for a while.
I'm drinking black coffee right now because I can't have dairy products while I'm on this thyroid medication.

Company is downsizing. I fear I may be out of work soon. Work mates are panicking. Some of these people have been at this job for over 20 years, some right out of highschool. They know nothing but insurance fraud. It will be tough to get another job, and in this dire economic climate. Thankfully I have a master's and bachelor 's which I got while working at this job after high-school.

by Anonymous | reply 546 | May 27, 2023 7:22 PM |
R546, I donāt know if this will work for you or not, but this is what I do.
I keep my thyroid pills in the bathroom because I know Iāll get up to pee by 2am or so and thatās when I take it. Enough time since I last ate, and plenty of time before I eat breakfast.
On the rare night that I sleep all the way through, I just take it in the morning and skip breakfast.

I bought some "Coastal" / Kirkland / Costco brand "mature English" cheddar cheese. That's in addition to the Kerrygold Dubliner and Kingdom brand cheddar that I also got from Costco.
Anyway, the Coastal cheddar cheese, so far, tastes pretty good. Little bit crumbly in texture. The Kingdom cheddar might have an edge on it.

I need to get used to it, but I'm liking my new Apple computer keyboard. It's wireless and has the number pad on the right side. My old Dell keyboard is almost like a mechanical (clacky-sounding) keyboard. I wouldn't mind finding a really comfortable mechanical keyboard.
This Apple keyboard is quiet, though, which is good.

Lady and I are waiting to pay at Walgreens and we sort of bond over the fact that there is just one person working the register, and she is dealing with a complicated return by a ditz, so the line is standing still.
My state has banned disposable paper and plastic bags to protect the environment. People have learned to carry reusable bags to shop, but the lady has none, and therefore has to carry her assorted items to the parking lot. She looks at me and says āThis is America and we canāt get a shopping bag?ā This pegs her immediately as a MAGA asshole who thinks āTheyā have taken away her rights. Bond over

When I complained of how bored i was today, no long weekend plans , an acquaintance of mine told me his life is so mundane that he lives in a dreamworld. When I probed him to further explain, he said he frequently imagines that he is someone else, I.e. gets lost in thought imagining a life with a group of friends, he works as an FBI agent, he has spoke, kids etc.

I'm not having it for dinner tonight but for dinner on Tuesday and the rest of the soup I will freezer into two large rubbermaid containers and place them in my freezer.

by Anonymous | reply 579 | May 29, 2023 5:48 PM |
I plan to make split pea soup soon. The ingredients are on my shopping list. I use onions, potatoes (Yukon Gold-type), a large can of tomatoes, smoked paprika, and dried oregano. It's a pretty minimalist recipe, but really good.
No ham in mine, but I do serve it with grated cheese on top. And Tabasco sauce.

I bought a tongue scraper and an avocado slicer the other day and tried them both today. Interestingly, they're both plastic and similar in shape - a handle extending to a flat, oval-shaped plane (like the bowl of a spoon if it were flat and hollowed-out leaving only the rim), the former with plastic tines running across the oval to scrape the crud off your tongue, the latter with plastic tines running from top to bottom to cut a pitted avocado half into neat, even slices.
Neither works very well. My tongue looks and feels the same post-scraping as it did pre-scrape and an avocado would have to achieve some unattainably perfect state of ripeness in order to be firm enough to hold the shape of the slices but not be so firm that they can't be cut with a plastic blade
Three dollars wasted.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | May 29, 2023 6:04 PM |
I once hired two brothers to split the peas. One ran out and purchased a bag and the other tried to fuck the cat.
Never again will I wield such power and it is for the best.

I don't understand all these gadgets for slicing avocados. So easy to do. Slice the avocado in half, pole-to-pole. Break the 2 pieces apart. Drop the blade of your knife into the seed, twist, and dump the seed.
Now, you have to equal halves. Get a dull knife, like a butter knife, and cut long slices (or cross-hatched if you want cubes) into the avocado. Get a large-ish spoon (for Hass avocados, I use a soup spoon) and scoop out your slices.
by Anonymous | reply 587 | May 29, 2023 6:11 PM |
Something I've done untold times, R587.
A hundred or so years ago, there was no such thing as pre-sliced bread. The egg slicer was invented a few years before that.
I'd hoped that avocado slicing might likewise be even further advanced than you detail above using a $2 plastic tool from China.
I was wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 588 | May 29, 2023 6:20 PM |
R587, many of these contraptions are designed to replace knives that can be used as weapons.
I work in what would be considered an extremely diverse environment and I can bring in an apple slicer, but I donāt want to a knife/target for opportunistic theft or client knowledge that I keep a paring knife.

My Split Pea Soup is simmering right now. In two minutes I shall add the carrots, celery and the fingerling potatoes and cook for another 20 minutes then use the immersion blender to liquify then pour into two large glass bowls to cool.

by Anonymous | reply 598 | May 29, 2023 10:55 PM |
R598- That would be the best way to prepare it. This way you still have some nice chunks of carrots and potatoes and celery but I usually just liquify the entire giant soup pot of soup.
