Do they exist?
Charming historic neighborhoods in Los Angeles?

Yes, in the northern suburbs.
As in Sausalito.

Watts

Hancock Park, Pasadena are the expensive ones.
Silverlake, Los Feliz and Echo Park used to be the inexpensive ones. Now? HA HA HA.

"Charming" and "Los Angeles" can't possibly be in the same sentence...

Whitley Heights and the Whitley Steps.

I live in one. Harvard Heights. Filled with Victorian houses that they aren't allowed to tear down.

Parts of Highland Park. Silverlake. Los Feliz, Hancock Park.

What Pomona like?

If by Los Angeles you are including the whole county, Carroll Park in Long Beach is one of my favorite historic neighborhoods, completely idyllic. This video is a bit goofy, but gives a glimpse of it:

Hers are other historic districts in Long Beach

Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena is cute. They have an annual tour of the craftsman homes there.

Pomona's a gang-ridden dump, with some more upscale but forgettable neighborhoods around the edges.

Pomona?!

r11, I had one of the best nights of my life in one of the houses pictured on that site. What a surprise this morning with my coffee!
No, I won't tell you what happened :)

Los Feliz is very nice.

Bring a tent and you can live in any of them and shit on the sidewalk! It’s the new norm in LA.

Bungalow heaven is a little disappointing. Yes, there are plenty of lovely bungalows but there are also houses that are run down and fronted by crappy yards with chain link fences.
There are wonderful individual homes but the overall bungalow heaven vibe is marred by the mix of standards. Just keep expectations in check.

I love that Pomona was somehow referenced in this thread.

R8 There is the Lincoln Park Historic District. It is a oft used location site for filming, filled with some beautiful historic homes that surround a lovely little park.

It's not part of the city of LA, but Sierra Madre is cute and quaint. Right up by the mountains with lots of black bear neighbors...

The West Adams district has lots of historic areas that are also protected from demolition. The Harvard Heights area has already been mentioned, but there's also Lafayette Square and Victoria Park, both beautiful areas with just a single road in or out.
Western Heights and Country Club Park also have some lovely homes. .

R3 Is Hancock Park where Hattie McDaniel was the first Black home owner?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 28, 2023 10:30 PM |
Hattie McDaniel lived in West Adams in the Adams-Normandie neighborhood, near the intersection of Western and Adams.
2203 S. Harvard Blvd. is the exact address.

When did Pomona go straight down the shitter?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 28, 2023 10:52 PM |
Pasadena, San Marino, the Hollywoodland neighborhood, and there are various cute old neighborhoods in West LA

There are numerous great neighborhoods. Mid-City is full to the brim with great 1920s architecture. North of Montana in Santa Monica is the same, with buildings by architects such as John Byers and Irving Gill. Spaulding Square is often used by film companies as a stand in for an old east coast suburb. I don't think I would call downtown LA charming, but its trove of amazing Art Deco and proto-Modernist buildings is extraordinary. The Eastern Building, the Bradbury Building, the Los Angeles Public Library, Grand Central Market, City Hall, the Arts Building, the Biltmore, the Examiner Building, etc.

Agreed. A nice little town that has no stoplights, fast-food places, etc. It's far enough away from the freeway and major through streets so it's not choked with traffic. Monrovia also has a nice little downtown and a lot of craftsman homes.
