How was Darryl Hannah EVER a thing?
I don't even want to be mean but she was just not attractive at all. Not even in Splash. And other than maybe Kill Bill, I haven't seen her give any good performances.
Was being blonde and tall enough to fool people? Did she have some other quality that I'm missing? What explains her rise in the '80s?

She is quite androgynous looking and always has been. I don’t know that I’d call her ugly, but she’s certainly not conventionally attractive. She was in a backwoods slasher movie called “The Final Terror” with Rachel Ward in the early ‘80s before she hit it big. It’s a pretty good (and weird) movie.

I think beauty standards change through the decades.
At her peak, was Daryl Hannah as beautiful as Margot Robbie? No, but… she was still more beautiful than Ali Mac Graw in Love Story.
I guess beauty standards continue to change and refine. Maybe forty years from now, people will ask how Margot Robbie was once considered beautiful?

There's a tv show in the UK called Pointless where contestants have to get the lowest score.
If the category was "Daryl Hannah films" then you wouldn't want to answer Splash, Kill Bill. Wall Street, Steel Magnolias because they'd score highly.
Looking at her acting roles the only other films that might feature on a list are Bladerunner and Roxanne.
All other roles would be pointless.

The costume designer Ann Roth (who’s dressed everyone) said there was one actress that no matter what she put on her, the clothes just kind of negated themselves and disappeared.

Deets on Young’s firing - they were shooting on location in the Hamptons:
[quote]Young called Oliver Stone a "bastard." At one point during the production, Daryl Hannah was costumed in a backless dress. When she confided to her co-star that she was uncomfortable in the outfit, Young asked Stone why he would force her to do something that made her feel uneasy. Stone subsequently rewrote the scene in question and gave Young's only line to Hannah. According to Young:
[quote]"I go up to Oliver and say, 'I don't understand? I have no lines now. What's the point of me being in this scene?' And he goes, 'You're right. You're fired.' I went to the trailer, got my stuff, and then they told me to get in this car. And this driver, who I thought was going to take me back to Manhattan, drops me off at the bus station. I just thought, 'OK. If this is how you get your rocks off.'"
