She is quite androgynous looking and always has been. I don’t know that I’d call her ugly, but she’s certainly not conventionally attractive. She was in a backwoods slasher movie called “The Final Terror” with Rachel Ward in the early ‘80s before she hit it big. It’s a pretty good (and weird) movie.

She also appeared to be riding the short bus in every role.

I remember when she first broke out in the early 80s. My roommate had gone to high school with her in Chicago. I believe her stepfather was a very wealthy businessman and she went to a progressive private school. She dated Jackson Browne when she was in high school, and the gossip was that he originally saw her in his audience. So she clearly had something.

I’d say her rise benefited from Brooke Shields’ popularity. Not that she was a beautiful as Brooke, but tall, leggy, androgyny was a look. Lori Singer was another of the same type.
