Herzog is such a dick. Only I can listen to these fuckwits get eaten.

I couldn't finish watching it. He was so obviously mentally ill, it was distressing. He treated wild animals like they were domestic pets. And he was responsible for his girlfriend's death. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been to have been mauled to death by bears.

The first time I saw this I was confused.

I was sorry for him in the end but come on? Of course they ate him.

The part where he listens to the death tape and tells that lady to destroy it makes for hilarious video edits, just add whatever audio you want mocked to the scene.

I think that lady DID listen to the tape she let Herzog listen to. She would never destroy that.

This is an excellent film. I disagree that he had a particularly good heart. Presumably you feel this way because of his claimed affinity with bears. Anyone who genuinely cares about wild animals respects them, and that involves respecting their true natures and GIVING THEM SPACE. That's for their safety and for your own. His ego demanded inserting himself into the bears' lives in a quest to become a Steve Irwin style media figure. This was dangerous, stupid and disrespectful. He got himself and his "girlfriend" killed (along with the bear) because of his schtick. We know enough about his history of LA fame whoring to question to his motivations.

One of Herzog's best documentaries, second only to Land of Silence and Darkness (1971).

The bears thought Timothy was LUNCH.

It was weird how he thought he needed to “protect” the bears. They were under no threat whatsoever.

He was the threat.

I find these type of documentaries uncomfortably exploitive. They tickle our dark and morbid curiosity (just like true-crime podcasts / TV shows).

I remember when it all happened, because I knew who he was from seeing him as a guest on Rosie O'Donnell, David Letterman, etc.

That is why I was psyched when I heard about this documentary. I wanted to hear the audio for myself after two years of researching the case online.

And then, nothing., So anti-climactic. I remember being glad it wasn't Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary. haha

It's kind of sick to want to hear a man being ripped apart by wild animals.

Timothy was deluded and mentally ill. The docu is a tale of progressive madness- almost a horror story.

If he had a death wish and wanted to be eaten alive by bears, fine. But he took his girlfriend with him who died the same horrible death.

The authorities in the national park should have stopped him too. He was obviously a danger to himself, others and the bears who had to be killed to get his body parts.

I thought his documentary about Klaus Kinsky was fascinating. Herzog had a creepy side to him, his love hate relationship with Kinsky was very weird.

Oddly, I remember watching a documentary of this many, many years ago, and at the very end it played the tape, which included the sounds of them being eaten. Later, when I tried to watch it again after some years, the sounds had been removed. Is it possible that many years ago there was a documentary that revealed the sounds at the end and later that was edited out???

It was not bears, but one bear that killed the pair. Apparently, the attack took a while to kill Timothy, don’t know about his girlfriend. The same bear attacked a pilot worried about him when he missed a plane. Can’t remember all the details, I read a book about it years ago.

R27-I heard it as well. The very worst part of it to me was at the end when his girlfriend was left alone after the bear killed him. The silence, then the sound of the bear attacking her were terrifying.

R33- Just to add that you could almost feel her terror, not knowing where the bear was and if it was coming for her. Horrific death. He should not have put her in that situation and she should not have allowed him to.

What is assumed to be a very convincing fake of the first two minutes did show up online in the years following the incident and is believed by some to be genuine.

However, Kevin 'The Bearman' Sanders of Yellowstone Outdoor Adventures (who has been investigating the incident for years and who has since provided extensive documentation on his findings) claims that the aforementioned clip is fake, citing differences between it and the actual audio (which he alleges to have heard the real first two minutes of and which he has partially transcribed on his website).

R37- We know the fucking beat attacked her. The last sounds on the tape are of her terrified and the sounds of the bear crashing the tent, if the tape was authentic, which it may not have been. I mean there weren't crunching nosies of the bear eating her, ffs.

It was two old male bears that attacked them and it was two bears that they killed.

When they went back to the island, all that was left (of the dead bears) was bones. The living bears had canabalized them.

Bears don't particularly care if you're dead or not. Once they have you, they just start eating.

R47- I did read that it was an old bear who could no longer hunt for prey or some such. TT and his gf were just easy prey to him. I wasn't aware of two bears but I have forgotten a lot because it has been so long since I watched it.

There's a whole mental illness of people who think dangerous animals are actually their friends and/or protectors. Letting dogs babysit toddlers, etc.

People don't want to admit that stingray attacks of the kind that killed Steve Irwin are freakishly rare, for a good reason. It killed him because he was invading its space by swimming right on top of it for a TV shot and it felt threatened. It lashed out in self defence. He might have loved animals, but he did not respect them. Like Treadwell.

The point of the link at R38 to Lost Media Wiki was not to provide the audio, but to underscore that the version you guys are claiming to have listened to is a fake. The Timothy Treadwell death audio tape has not been released to the public at all, much less in any documentary. I have suggested upthread (R32) that posted recollections claiming that are an example of the Mandela Effect, but since the claimant has picked up a sock or two, I'm now leaning more in favor of the claim being just trolling.

I wasn't trolling R52, I'm the one who said I thought I heard it also, like 8-10 years ago, I probably didn't though, maybe I heard the fake.

R53- Same. I heard it as well and believed it to be authentic, but of course I could be wrong. Either way I can't imagine the terror his gf must have felt knowing he was dead and hearing that bear coming for her. Honestly, I would not want to hear that tape. Just gruesome.

I'm glad Herzog didn't play that tape. Timothy s friend seemed so traumatized by hearing it. I despised Herzog for letting her hear it. What an awful story. Herzog said that on the tape, Timothy was screaming for Amy to run as they were being killed. Awful.

Herzog doesn't let the friend listen to the tape, r63. I just re-watched this movie after the OP brought it up - Herzog specifically tells the friend to never listen to it and to destroy it, because it will always be "the white elephant" in her room, tempting her to listen.

The thing about Herzog's docs that I love is he does give air time all most all points of you and let the chips fall where they may - I am sure there are people who walk out of GM thinking TT was in the right, that he was in the wrong. He clearly states his own opinion but he def seems interested in what other people have to say, and to listening to them. That';s why I always love his movies.

Timothy wasn't right. I know that. I remember watching it, and not wanting to watch it, but I did. I do feel bad about Timothy though.

R71- No, he wasn't. One part that I remember seeing was Timothy sitting in a stream of water, like a creek right next to the bear that eventually kills him. He was sitting next to a bear treating it as if it were dog or cat. He was warned repeatedly to leave but he refused.

Timothy claimed he was considered for the role of Woody on “Cheers”.

I thought Timothy said he was protecting the bears from hunters. Why did the park let him stay if he was too close to the bears?

I'm disappointed. I thought he would have taken a more scientific approach to his work, given the time he spent in the wilderness. I honor him as an early proponent of this particular scientific method, depicted in the attached.

Exactly. I hate how to this day Irwin is held up as some hero and great guy. He was an asshole who harassed animals for a living.
