Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man

I’m watching it now I’m PlutoTv. Timothy Treadwell had a good heart. But wow. I wonder if he was high out there or he was just bipolar. Every scene with the bears is foreboding. One pilot in the beginning says he thought tht the bears probably thought Tim was retarded!

by Anonymousreply 96March 23, 2023 11:00 PM

I know. I didn’t proof read before post...

by Anonymousreply 1March 20, 2023 2:09 AM

What more proof do you need R1? Have you watched him in that documentary? He WAS off. Jesus Christ, who would put themselves and their loved one in that situation?

by Anonymousreply 2March 20, 2023 2:13 AM

He seemed a little light in the loafers to me.

by Anonymousreply 3March 20, 2023 2:19 AM

Herzog is such a dick. Only I can listen to these fuckwits get eaten.

by Anonymousreply 4March 20, 2023 2:23 AM

I couldn't finish watching it. He was so obviously mentally ill, it was distressing. He treated wild animals like they were domestic pets. And he was responsible for his girlfriend's death. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been to have been mauled to death by bears.

by Anonymousreply 5March 20, 2023 2:28 AM

R5 We will never know as Herzog would not play the fucking tape.

by Anonymousreply 6March 20, 2023 2:30 AM

Wasn't there a part where he kept saying "oh my life would be much easier if I was gay blah blah but instead I'm this crazy, misunderstood genius"

by Anonymousreply 7March 20, 2023 2:30 AM

The first time I saw this I was confused.

A queen , crazy or methed out, loose in the wilderness. With bears.

I was sorry for him in the end but come on? Of course they ate him.

by Anonymousreply 8March 20, 2023 2:35 AM

The same thing would have happened to him in P-Town R8.

More or less.

by Anonymousreply 9March 20, 2023 2:49 AM

I remember thinking the coroner in the case was really off too. He was just bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 10March 20, 2023 4:25 AM

The part where he listens to the death tape and tells that lady to destroy it makes for hilarious video edits, just add whatever audio you want mocked to the scene.

by Anonymousreply 11March 20, 2023 4:30 AM

I think that lady DID listen to the tape she let Herzog listen to. She would never destroy that.

by Anonymousreply 12March 20, 2023 4:31 AM

I’ll have to see this. I loved Into the Abyss, I’ve seen that many times.

by Anonymousreply 13March 20, 2023 4:36 AM

He fucked around and found out.

by Anonymousreply 14March 20, 2023 8:18 AM

This is an excellent film. I disagree that he had a particularly good heart. Presumably you feel this way because of his claimed affinity with bears. Anyone who genuinely cares about wild animals respects them, and that involves respecting their true natures and GIVING THEM SPACE. That's for their safety and for your own. His ego demanded inserting himself into the bears' lives in a quest to become a Steve Irwin style media figure. This was dangerous, stupid and disrespectful. He got himself and his "girlfriend" killed (along with the bear) because of his schtick. We know enough about his history of LA fame whoring to question to his motivations.

by Anonymousreply 15March 20, 2023 8:31 AM

I second that, r13. Into the Abyss is captivating. I liked it more than Grizzly Man

by Anonymousreply 16March 20, 2023 8:36 AM

One of Herzog's best documentaries, second only to Land of Silence and Darkness (1971).

by Anonymousreply 17March 20, 2023 8:41 AM

The bears thought Timothy was LUNCH.

by Anonymousreply 18March 20, 2023 8:46 AM

It was weird how he thought he needed to “protect” the bears. They were under no threat whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 19March 20, 2023 8:48 AM

He was the threat.

by Anonymousreply 20March 20, 2023 9:30 AM

I find these type of documentaries uncomfortably exploitive. They tickle our dark and morbid curiosity (just like true-crime podcasts / TV shows).

by Anonymousreply 21March 20, 2023 9:44 AM

I'm with R4 and R6.

I remember when it all happened, because I knew who he was from seeing him as a guest on Rosie O'Donnell, David Letterman, etc.

That is why I was psyched when I heard about this documentary. I wanted to hear the audio for myself after two years of researching the case online.

And then, nothing., So anti-climactic. I remember being glad it wasn't Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary. haha

by Anonymousreply 22March 20, 2023 9:45 AM

It's kind of sick to want to hear a man being ripped apart by wild animals.

by Anonymousreply 23March 20, 2023 12:06 PM

Timothy was deluded and mentally ill. The docu is a tale of progressive madness- almost a horror story.

by Anonymousreply 24March 20, 2023 12:37 PM

If he had a death wish and wanted to be eaten alive by bears, fine. But he took his girlfriend with him who died the same horrible death.

The authorities in the national park should have stopped him too. He was obviously a danger to himself, others and the bears who had to be killed to get his body parts.

by Anonymousreply 25March 20, 2023 1:09 PM

[quote]One of Herzog's best documentaries, second only to Land of Silence and Darkness (1971).

I thought his documentary about Klaus Kinsky was fascinating. Herzog had a creepy side to him, his love hate relationship with Kinsky was very weird.

by Anonymousreply 26March 20, 2023 1:14 PM

Oddly, I remember watching a documentary of this many, many years ago, and at the very end it played the tape, which included the sounds of them being eaten. Later, when I tried to watch it again after some years, the sounds had been removed. Is it possible that many years ago there was a documentary that revealed the sounds at the end and later that was edited out???

by Anonymousreply 27March 20, 2023 2:14 PM

R23, And a young woman.

by Anonymousreply 28March 20, 2023 3:02 PM

R25 Yeah but his girlfriend was an idiot to have gone along. He may think he's one of the bear family but surely she couldn't have thought that too. SHe knew it was a bad idea but went anyway. Also, I fucking hate pretentious Herzog and all his shitty movies. His voice grates on me. And yeah, let us hear the tape! And let us see the Christine Chubbuck tape too.

by Anonymousreply 29March 20, 2023 3:29 PM

It was not bears, but one bear that killed the pair. Apparently, the attack took a while to kill Timothy, don’t know about his girlfriend. The same bear attacked a pilot worried about him when he missed a plane. Can’t remember all the details, I read a book about it years ago.

by Anonymousreply 30March 20, 2023 3:55 PM

Herzog is great. I don’t need to hear the gargling screams of bear eating man and woman.

by Anonymousreply 31March 20, 2023 4:34 PM

R27, no. I'd put that down to the Mandela Effect.

by Anonymousreply 32March 20, 2023 4:55 PM

R27-I heard it as well. The very worst part of it to me was at the end when his girlfriend was left alone after the bear killed him. The silence, then the sound of the bear attacking her were terrifying.

by Anonymousreply 33March 20, 2023 4:56 PM

R33- Just to add that you could almost feel her terror, not knowing where the bear was and if it was coming for her. Horrific death. He should not have put her in that situation and she should not have allowed him to.

by Anonymousreply 34March 20, 2023 5:20 PM

R33 The tape does not include her death.

by Anonymousreply 35March 20, 2023 5:41 PM

R35- I didn't say it included her death. I said you can hear the bear coming for her. Her tent.

by Anonymousreply 36March 20, 2023 5:48 PM

R36 " then the sound of the bear attacking her were terrifying."

by Anonymousreply 37March 20, 2023 6:04 PM

𝐅𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐩

What is assumed to be a very convincing fake of the first two minutes did show up online in the years following the incident and is believed by some to be genuine.

However, Kevin 'The Bearman' Sanders of Yellowstone Outdoor Adventures (who has been investigating the incident for years and who has since provided extensive documentation on his findings) claims that the aforementioned clip is fake, citing differences between it and the actual audio (which he alleges to have heard the real first two minutes of and which he has partially transcribed on his website).

by Anonymousreply 38March 20, 2023 6:06 PM

R37- We know the fucking beat attacked her. The last sounds on the tape are of her terrified and the sounds of the bear crashing the tent, if the tape was authentic, which it may not have been. I mean there weren't crunching nosies of the bear eating her, ffs.

by Anonymousreply 39March 20, 2023 6:08 PM

R39 But you have not heard the tape.

by Anonymousreply 40March 20, 2023 6:12 PM

I must hear the tape. I simply must.

by Anonymousreply 41March 20, 2023 6:14 PM

R40-I heard a tape, whether that was real or not idk. It really did sound authentic, but it may not have been. The bear was reported to have been old and unable to hunt for food. They were easy prey for him.

by Anonymousreply 42March 20, 2023 6:19 PM

I also thought I heard a tape, maybe ten years ago.

by Anonymousreply 43March 20, 2023 6:31 PM

R27, I remember this airing on network TV (maybe ABC), and if I recall, there was a disclaimer that they would not air the sounds of the couple being attacked by the bear.

by Anonymousreply 44March 20, 2023 6:47 PM

The Mandela effect.

by Anonymousreply 45March 20, 2023 6:56 PM

R38 I didn’t see any transcript in the link I provided. Where is it?

by Anonymousreply 46March 20, 2023 10:21 PM

It was two old male bears that attacked them and it was two bears that they killed.

When they went back to the island, all that was left (of the dead bears) was bones. The living bears had canabalized them.

Bears don't particularly care if you're dead or not. Once they have you, they just start eating.

Nobody needs to hear that.

by Anonymousreply 47March 20, 2023 11:10 PM

R47- I did read that it was an old bear who could no longer hunt for prey or some such. TT and his gf were just easy prey to him. I wasn't aware of two bears but I have forgotten a lot because it has been so long since I watched it.

by Anonymousreply 48March 20, 2023 11:19 PM

R47 Nope they did the autopsy on the old bear who had humans in his tummy. The younger second bear they shot was eaten before they could examine him.

by Anonymousreply 49March 20, 2023 11:38 PM

There's a whole mental illness of people who think dangerous animals are actually their friends and/or protectors. Letting dogs babysit toddlers, etc.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 50March 20, 2023 11:44 PM

People don't want to admit that stingray attacks of the kind that killed Steve Irwin are freakishly rare, for a good reason. It killed him because he was invading its space by swimming right on top of it for a TV shot and it felt threatened. It lashed out in self defence. He might have loved animals, but he did not respect them. Like Treadwell.

by Anonymousreply 51March 21, 2023 4:49 AM

[quote]R46: I didn’t see any transcript in the link I provided. Where is it?

The link you provided, or the link I provided?

The point of the link at R38 to Lost Media Wiki was not to provide the audio, but to underscore that the version you guys are claiming to have listened to is a fake. The Timothy Treadwell death audio tape has not been released to the public at all, much less in any documentary. I have suggested upthread (R32) that posted recollections claiming that are an example of the Mandela Effect, but since the claimant has picked up a sock or two, I'm now leaning more in favor of the claim being just trolling.

by Anonymousreply 52March 21, 2023 6:10 AM

I wasn't trolling R52, I'm the one who said I thought I heard it also, like 8-10 years ago, I probably didn't though, maybe I heard the fake.

by Anonymousreply 53March 21, 2023 7:00 PM

R53- Same. I heard it as well and believed it to be authentic, but of course I could be wrong. Either way I can't imagine the terror his gf must have felt knowing he was dead and hearing that bear coming for her. Honestly, I would not want to hear that tape. Just gruesome.

by Anonymousreply 54March 21, 2023 7:06 PM

I thought I heard it too so….obviously we were all duped, which is fine, I don’t think I could stomach even trying to hear that again. It is fucking gruesome.

by Anonymousreply 55March 21, 2023 8:39 PM

Tape too grisly for my tastes. Campers too gristly.

by Anonymousreply 56March 21, 2023 9:35 PM

Perhaps it was the Barry Mandelo Effect.

by Anonymousreply 57March 21, 2023 9:46 PM

R56 You really should have signed that as grumpy bear.

by Anonymousreply 58March 21, 2023 10:13 PM

Unbearable.

by Anonymousreply 59March 21, 2023 10:15 PM

I still haven't listened to Lauren Scruggs walking into a helicopter's props and losing her hand and eye. The 911 call is available to hear but I just can't do it.

by Anonymousreply 60March 21, 2023 11:46 PM

Surprised that so many people want to hear that tape. Why? Do you feel so dead inside, so dulled by life that you want to be shocked into feeling something, anything?

by Anonymousreply 61March 22, 2023 2:35 AM

That guy was batshit crazy. I remember something about the park rangers considered him to be a pain in their asses and predicting a bad ending for him.

by Anonymousreply 62March 22, 2023 3:22 AM

I'm glad Herzog didn't play that tape. Timothy s friend seemed so traumatized by hearing it. I despised Herzog for letting her hear it. What an awful story. Herzog said that on the tape, Timothy was screaming for Amy to run as they were being killed. Awful.

by Anonymousreply 63March 22, 2023 3:26 AM

Herzog doesn't let the friend listen to the tape, r63. I just re-watched this movie after the OP brought it up - Herzog specifically tells the friend to never listen to it and to destroy it, because it will always be "the white elephant" in her room, tempting her to listen.

by Anonymousreply 64March 22, 2023 3:40 AM

She looked like she already heard it.

by Anonymousreply 65March 22, 2023 3:42 AM

I'm sorry R64, I mis remembered then. I just remember her face and how upset she was. I haven't watched it in so long.

by Anonymousreply 66March 22, 2023 3:44 AM

[Quote] Do you feel so dead inside, so dulled by life that you want to be shocked into feeling something, anything?

YES! YES! Oh, God YES!

by Anonymousreply 67March 22, 2023 3:46 AM

I hope not. I really hope not.

by Anonymousreply 68March 22, 2023 3:46 AM

I hadn't seen it since it came out -- she was def traumatized but they were traumatizing moments. She's sitting there watching his face. Werner can't even listen to the entire thing, he has to stop. You know that one's imagination is sometimes worse than reality -- I am sure she was hearing the word noises inside her head without even hearing the video, A truly awful situation, all because this weirdo decided these killer beasts were cutie-pie friends

by Anonymousreply 69March 22, 2023 3:47 AM

The thing about Herzog's docs that I love is he does give air time all most all points of you and let the chips fall where they may - I am sure there are people who walk out of GM thinking TT was in the right, that he was in the wrong. He clearly states his own opinion but he def seems interested in what other people have to say, and to listening to them. That';s why I always love his movies.

by Anonymousreply 70March 22, 2023 3:50 AM

Timothy wasn't right. I know that. I remember watching it, and not wanting to watch it, but I did. I do feel bad about Timothy though.

by Anonymousreply 71March 22, 2023 3:58 AM

R71- No, he wasn't. One part that I remember seeing was Timothy sitting in a stream of water, like a creek right next to the bear that eventually kills him. He was sitting next to a bear treating it as if it were dog or cat. He was warned repeatedly to leave but he refused.

by Anonymousreply 72March 22, 2023 4:11 AM

Timothy claimed he was considered for the role of Woody on “Cheers”.

by Anonymousreply 73March 22, 2023 4:33 AM

I thought Timothy said he was protecting the bears from hunters. Why did the park let him stay if he was too close to the bears?

by Anonymousreply 74March 22, 2023 4:34 AM

Have we determined what was on his iPod?

by Anonymousreply 75March 22, 2023 4:47 AM

I'm disappointed. I thought he would have taken a more scientific approach to his work, given the time he spent in the wilderness. I honor him as an early proponent of this particular scientific method, depicted in the attached.

by Anonymousreply 78March 22, 2023 5:07 AM

I wondered why the park let him stay there, too. Its insane that Timothy thought HE was protecting the bears. Watching that show, the whole time I kept thinking those bears don't want him there, they'll kill him. He had to have been mentally ill on some level. Delusional too.

by Anonymousreply 79March 22, 2023 5:38 AM

Oh God R75.😮

by Anonymousreply 80March 22, 2023 5:42 AM

Werner Herzog has the freakiest narrating voice of all time. Imagine him narrating your grisly death...

by Anonymousreply 81March 22, 2023 5:58 AM

Anyone here ever seen the series 'The Boondocks'? There's a Season Three episode ('It's a Black President, Huey Freeman') where Werner Herzog interviews the Freeman family. It's funny as fuck.

I can never get enough of Herzog's voice.

OP: "Timothy Treadwell had a good heart."

Timothy Treadwell had a delicious heart.

Don't you mean grizzly?

Exactly. I hate how to this day Irwin is held up as some hero and great guy. He was an asshole who harassed animals for a living.

by Anonymousreply 86March 22, 2023 12:33 PM

R86- I thought that Steve got stung because he didn't see the stingray, wasn't aware of it until it stung him. But it certainly also very likely that he did.

by Anonymousreply 87March 22, 2023 12:37 PM

The guy was a whack job whose antics got him and some dumb bitch killed.

by Anonymousreply 88March 22, 2023 12:38 PM

R73 He did! Ha ha, years ago my friend made meme of Tim wearing a shirt that says "bitches don't know about my cheers audition!" and Herzog is a long winded, pretentious asshole. The fucking nerve of him making a show about how barbaric the US is for having the death penalty, barbarism begins at home, asshole who has a fucking tape of two morons being brutally killed. And he left the tape with someone but tells them not to listen to it? What is he, fucking Bluebeard? Also, he thinks Darlie Routier is innocent?! Oh fuck off, Wern.

by Anonymousreply 89March 22, 2023 3:18 PM

[quote]R89: asshole who has a fucking tape of two morons being brutally killed.

He didn't ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 the tape, or keep it, but obtained it from authorities for the purposes of the documentary.

[quote]And he left the tape with someone but tells them not to listen to it? What is he, fucking Bluebeard?

Out of consideration, he told them not to listen. Your outrage seems incoherent. You yourself demanded to hear the tape at R29, and claim to have listened to what you 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡 was the tape; WTF was that all about? Are you Bluebeard?

[quote]Also, he thinks Darlie Routier is innocent?!

I have no idea, and I'm not watching a Youtube video episode of 'On Death Row' to find out. However, that would seem to be consistent with his views on the death penalty. Listening to the tape is in no way inconsistent with being against the death penalty; what? Do you think Timothy Treadwell was executed by the State?

by Anonymousreply 90March 22, 2023 4:31 PM

R90 Herzog has always been a dickhead. Arrogant. Cunt.

by Anonymousreply 91March 22, 2023 6:41 PM

R87: The ray was swimming mid-water and Irwin swam directly over the top of it, for a TV shot. It freaked out fearing it was being attacked and stabbed him through the heart.

by Anonymousreply 92March 23, 2023 2:18 AM

R90, you and I have locked horns on a different thread, but I agree with you, nice post.

by Anonymousreply 93March 23, 2023 4:27 AM

I once thought I discovered the horrific audio tape of Treadway being eaten, but sadly it turned out to be only an audio tape of Lena Dunham tearing into a bucket of fried chicken.

by Anonymousreply 94March 23, 2023 4:40 AM

Pretty hypocritical of Herzog to say 'I'm the one listening to the tape so nobody else has to and should'. Knowing very well this would just make people more morbidly curious.

by Anonymousreply 95March 23, 2023 10:27 PM

It's not hypocritical R95, it's showmanship.
