By the International Criminal Court. Will he just ride it out in his bunker?
I recall a propaganda host saying on her TV show last year that if they lose this war, everyone will go to the Hague, including the janitor who sweeps behind the Kremlin. It was a rare moment of honesty that showed they're freaked out by the prospect of both losing and being tried for war crimes.

Nobody is under any illusion that he'll be arrested, at least not until there's a major political change in Russia. He doesn't really travel internationally anymore, maybe Belarus China, or Iran, where he would be safe. But, the nice thing is that he'll be like Pinochet: cornered inside his little gulag. If he needs medical treatments for, say, cancer in the West, he won't be able to go to some place like Switzerland even well after the conflict has ended, should he live that long.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 17, 2023 7:42 PM |
R13 Russia has very good doctors and hospitals, he wouldn't need to go to the west. Medicine was, besides space programme and military industry, one the rare fields in which Soviet union excelled.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 18, 2023 5:15 AM |
I wonder if there is enough resentment against Putin in Russia, among the oligarchs and members of the Duma to stage a coup, capture him and deliver him to The Hague.
The decision to go to war apparently was made by a few people around Putin. And Russia has maneuvered itself into a Pariah state status since then.
Isn't Xi visiting Zelenskyy soon? With the news that China is now delivering weapons to Russia to be used against Ukraine, I wonder if Zelenskyy cancels the meeting or at leacondemns Xi publicly for that move.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 18, 2023 6:17 AM |
Neither Russia nor the U.S. recognize the authority of the ICC. While there is little doubt that Putin has authorized a number of different war crimes, the arrest warrant, unfortunately, means nothing other than political points.

Even if it just erodes his support a bit more in Russia, it's a step in the right direction. The truly brainwashed won't change their minds, but there are a lot of "apolitical" types who just want to pretend everything is normal and go on living their lives. But normal presidents don't usually have arrest warrants for crimes against children.

It doesn't matter that Russia doesn't recognize the ICC. If Putin travels internationally any nation state can detain him and turn him over.
Normally I would say sure, but who has the balls to do so?
The Italians do it would seem. They seized his super yacht last year.
Putin's partner and youngest children live in Ticino, the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. It would be delightful to see the Swiss swoop in on him there and we would learn about it only after Putin was behind bars in the Hague.

Since we will never see that, it is at least satisfying to know that Trump and Putin have poopy pants in common, and Putin fell down the stairs recently, just as Trump's First Hole ex-wife did.
Things are winding down for both. They can't last forever. My intuition still tells me Trump won't make it to 2024, but I also think Putin's time is very limited. Unfortunately, he is unlikely to be held accountable in any meaningful way in this lifetime.
