Dental work without novocaine
In this podcast, a woman in her 60s calls in and says that she was brought up in a military family and she never had any numbing done for dental care including fillings until her adult life. She said she hates the feeling of numbing agents and so she prefers not to be numbed to this day regardless of what dental work has to be done.
I find this absolutely horrifying, as does the doctor cohost of the podcast.
Also discussed in this episode, Jeremy Renner's freaky snowplow accident that crushed his ribs into his lungs and also broke over 30 of his bones. I recall we weren't allowed to type his name here years ago, so we'll see if this gets deleted.

I hate the numb sensation, too. For fillings, I’d prefer to feel less, but there are other things where I’ve refused anesthesia (getting stitches for a flesh wound). I’ve had dentist go ahead and drill before I was fully numb (sadist didnt believe me) and it wasn’t so bad, really. Your body produces endorphins that overcomes pain sometimes.

I had two roots canals and a filling done without numbing.

My parents never let me have any kind of anaesthesia for fillings either when I was a kid in the 60s. (My mom said having fillings didn't hurt her, so I must be just making a fuss.) But my friends who are the same age tell me they're horrified, so I'm guessing it was seen enough for the dentist not to argue, but wasn't really common.
I assume the masochist in the podcast was like my mom and just has a very high threshhold of dental pain. (Even my mom allowed numbing for extractions.) I've had the numbing agent ever since I started paying for my own dental care. I'm now happier than most people to go, because it's so much less traumatic than it was.

When I was in my teens, I had all my dental work done without novocaine. My dentist was so rough with a needle, that the lesser of two evils was to have no numbing at all. As well, I seem to have a high pain threshold.

R3 Yeah, the doctor in the podcast said the woman must have an unusually high oral pain tolerance or else must have developed some kind of effective coping strategy to get through the trauma. She (the doctor) says she thinks it's inhumane to drill into teeth without numbing.
I also HATE the feeling of a numb face, but fuck, it beats having a drill go into an aggravated facial nerve.

A dentist once ground down a part of a molar that was sticking up (just came in that way) without numbing, but also without telling me that's what he was about to do, and it hurt like a motherfucker for a week.
