"What You Won't Do For Love" Singer Bobby Caldwell is Dead to Me

I loved that song. For years, I thought he was African American. His voice was so smooth and jazzy.

RIP. Not only is it a great song, but I love that video. Happy vibes.

His voice was so pure and so full of soul. You can close your eyes and just get lost in his sound.

A quintessential 70s vibe.

I don't know that I'd ever heard it, but I like it - even though he looks like he's trying to relieve himself when he sings.

He "battled illness" for several years.

by Anonymousreply 3March 15, 2023 2:55 PM

^ That illness was chronic constipation

by Anonymousreply 4March 15, 2023 2:55 PM

R3 This was a big hit in the late 1970s.

by Anonymousreply 5March 15, 2023 2:56 PM

I think this song could be considered as one of the early Yacht Rock songs.

R6 Definitely a song that would be considered "yacht rock" today.

by Anonymousreply 7March 15, 2023 3:04 PM

His voice was so beautiful and effortless.

Caldwell co-wrote "The Next Time I Fall" for Amy Grant and Peter Cetera

Michael McDonald is intolerable to my delicate ears, but Bobby's voice was buttah.

Up until a few years ago, I had assumed Bobby Caldwell was black. I'd never seen him perform and had only heard the song. I was shocked when I finally saw him. He's one of the few white guys who could really deliver a soulful sound. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 11March 15, 2023 3:16 PM

Love this song and also thought he was black for YEARS. RIP, Bobby. Thanks for the great tune

by Anonymousreply 12March 15, 2023 3:23 PM

Caldwell was a recent YouTube sensation for those who had no idea he was white.

I always thought he was black and never knew different until I read this! Fantastic song and great voice.

by Anonymousreply 14March 15, 2023 3:36 PM

R13 I love this! Their reactions when they first see his face are priceless!

I love the guy who points out that there are no dancers in the videos, no backup singers - just Caldwell himself delivering that powerful blue-eyed soul.

by Anonymousreply 15March 15, 2023 3:52 PM

Call me "Mary," but there are some singers whose voices are so beautiful that I'm moved to tears just listening to them. Every time I hear Caldwell sing this, I well up. He was phenomenal.

by Anonymousreply 16March 15, 2023 3:54 PM

I'm another one who thought he was Black. In fact, I confused his voice with Grover Washington, Jr's.

Love love LOVE how the men reacting to this song then give over their bodies to start grooving on this tune.

by Anonymousreply 18March 15, 2023 4:10 PM

R16 people were judged on the music then, not their looks or marketing.

by Anonymousreply 19March 15, 2023 4:11 PM

Bobby Caldwell should have gotten some Grammy love for this song and his performance.

by Anonymousreply 20March 15, 2023 6:05 PM

Apparently he had been flowing for years, and he was suffering from the after effects.

R19 Not true in the slightest. It benefitted record companies to have listeners assume Bobby was black. Soul was mostly a black market. The same marketing went on with Tina Marie and countless other acts.

by Anonymousreply 22March 15, 2023 8:22 PM

Not flowing - FLOXING.

There's a category of antibiotics that can cause real damage to some people and Bobby was apparently one of them.

Sad that happened to him....it apparently really fucked his shit up over the last several years.

This was my favorite song from his first album...something about those kalimbas.

Totally loved this song when it first came out. Still do.

by Anonymousreply 25March 15, 2023 11:38 PM

I love.that song too,I remember it well. R.I.P.❤🙏

by Anonymousreply 26March 16, 2023 12:12 AM

R17, Grover Washington Jr played sax.

Bill Withers sang on that song.

by Anonymousreply 27March 16, 2023 12:23 AM

Dionne Warwick did an uptempo version of the song to kick off her live show in 1981.

This was my intro to his music, years later I found whose beautiful voice was sampled on this song
