I do think it's silly to argue that a certain performer should have won because, 30 years later, their film has retained more of a fan base. A biopic of a beloved figure like Tina Turner is always going to be more accessible and appreciated by general audiences than an arthouse film like The Piano, but that doesn't necessarily make it better.

That was a time when performances by Black actors were routinely dismissed. It was not a reflection on the obvious merits Bassett's performance, in 1994 the Oscar nomination was it's own reward for a Black actor. Remember, Whoopi lost to Geraldine Page.

"What's Love Got To Do With It" the movie is nowhere near as well known as the actual song and if you Google it, a 2022 British comedy of the same name about an arranged marriage is what comes up first. The British film won some prizes at film festivals.

For the DUMB ASS at r159. I am very familiar with JLC's filmography. I stated that I was a fan of both actors. I love JLC in the "Halloween" series, in particular, but I would hesitate to call JLC a legend. Under almost any other circumstances I would be thrilled by her win. What are all these great Angela Bassett performances that make her "overdue"?

People were rewarding Holly for the fact that she played a deaf mute. Same reason Dustin won for Rain Man. Those gimmicky performances are outdated today in an era of movies like Coda.

Angela acted her ass off and had to dance like Tina, which is not an easy thing to do. She also had some heavy dramatic moments.

Debra Winger was awesome in Shadowlands.

Stockard Channing also gave a great performance as well.

And yes, Madonna, in Dangerous Game should have snagged a nomination, as she gave a revelatory performance that has been completely overlooked in terms of her career.

I would have dumped Emma Thompson from the lineup. She wasn't bad in Remains of the Day, but the movie is a chore to get through. It's not as good as Howards End.

R458 Holly Hunter wasn’t mute in The Piano. We heard her voice throughout and she even had to do accent work for her performance. It’s an outstanding performance fully deserving of its Oscar win.

R458 She also wasn’t a deaf character.

R460 As I recall, all we heard her say was "tuh..tuh..tuh.."

I predict Angela will win her first Oscar in a film dealing with African American women suffering from Alopecia. The film will be directed by Jada Pinkett Smith who will be up for best director.

Angela Bassett is the Phylicia Rashad of the big screen.

Nobody is hating on Bassett for her appearance. She chews up the scenery mercilessly and approaches every line like she's in a remake of The Towering Inferno. Subtlety is not her strong suit.

She looked like a drag queen with those bodybuilder arms. She looked like she could have beat up Ike.

I kind of love that about her though. And other actors like Pacino and Dunaway. I love when actors play big (even if they don't need to). Too many actors these days underplay the material.

Angela Bassett did not owe anyone a smile. She wasn't angry. She was not required to perform to make everyone think she was happy in that 2-3 seconds. People act like she pulled a Spike Lee or Eddie Murphy and then took a dump on the floor on the way out.

After just watching "Wakanda Forever" last night I felt that Angela Bassett was robbed of last year's Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Jamie Lee Curtis was good in "Everything Everywhere All At Once", but Angela Bassett was phenomenal in "Wakanda Forever."
