Which White House china services were generally regarded as the best?

Tastemakers of DL should know.

Katherine Tai's blow jobs and 'round the world service?

by Anonymousreply 1March 12, 2023 11:58 AM

I don't know about "best" but that Bar Bush could load enough food on a Chinet plate to feed a family of four...

She was a big strapping gal who wasn't afraid to eat.

by Anonymousreply 2March 12, 2023 12:23 PM

OP woke up this morning thinking.... 'hmmm how can I make DL even gayer... what can I post... hmmm whatever can I post...'

by Anonymousreply 3March 12, 2023 12:30 PM

A lot of the patterns are over the top Empire style, so very handsome and impressive. I choose the Franklin Roosevelt service because the emblem isn't centred. Why put food over the emblem? It's a big ivory plate and the border is elegant.

by Anonymousreply 4March 12, 2023 12:38 PM

I like the Polk with the green-gold border with the flower. Really pretty. Reminds me of my visit to Vienny and seeing the beautiful dinnerware the Austrian empress Sissi had.

Luckily there will never be a Trump one!!

China or butt plugs?

by Anonymousreply 6March 12, 2023 12:52 PM

My china was very durable...you know how big the hands of our Colored footman are!

Especially Roscoe!

Yes, I had to be practical.

by Anonymousreply 7March 12, 2023 12:54 PM

I like Nancy’s China….Policy….

by Anonymousreply 8March 12, 2023 12:59 PM

I will play. Johnson’s is the worst and Wilson’s my favorite. With all that gold, Obama’s looks like they picked it for Trump.

by Anonymousreply 9March 12, 2023 1:02 PM

“Who geeves a fuck about china? “

by Anonymousreply 10March 12, 2023 1:05 PM

Well the Johnson and the Polk services are the only ones you could use for a more "chic-casual" theme. I mean they are elegant but also a bit quaint. State Dinners don't go for charming, but there is no reason one of those affairs in tents couldn't.

by Anonymousreply 11March 12, 2023 1:10 PM

Obama's had teal on it, so that gold monstrously isn't the full set.

Agree Wilson's is nice

The Clinton china is the best. Truman's is fine, too. The Obamas' looks green in photos but actually is blue (except for the service and dessert plates, which are gold).

But it's really about the cachet of the White House, not about appearances. For that reason, I'd pick the Lincoln, skip any service from a slave-owner's presidency, and that's that. And I wouldn't touch the Reagan pieces except to throw from the Truman balcony.

by Anonymousreply 13March 12, 2023 1:18 PM

Being a dish queen myself, if I were First Gentleman I would raise funds to stock the White House with classic beloved but "industrial" American dinner service. There's no reason it shouldn't have an impressive set of Fiesta ware, mid-century space age Atomic/Satellite service, and dinner services made of glass, and even melamine. I'd also get some potters to throw a hippy dippy service set.

by Anonymousreply 14March 12, 2023 1:20 PM

It also needs a very large service of Buffalo style diner service.

by Anonymousreply 15March 12, 2023 1:23 PM

I hate to admit it but I like the Reagan China best.

Wow some of those pictured in R16 are much nicer and more interesting than the selection in OP's link.

by Anonymousreply 17March 12, 2023 1:31 PM

If thewarehouse if filled with that at R16, then my dish queen suggestions at R14 are not so outrageous.

Hillary Clinton had the worst taste on the planet. Everything she approved was overdone... her inaugural gowns, her White House redecoration, her china... too much like an Arkansas whorehouse.

Agreed. Her taste was very frauey.

[Melania] worked on a china design, but the project was sidelined due to cost and time constraints.

Because of course it was. Not enough time or money to make what Trump wanted, or Melania just didn’t give a fuck. Either way, it checks out.

by Anonymousreply 21March 12, 2023 1:44 PM

It's one of the most surprising things about her. Inside the ball-busting lawyer was the taste and style of a Tasteful friends post.

by Anonymousreply 22March 12, 2023 1:45 PM

The constant addition of china seems wasteful and pointless to me. Add it up over the last fifty or sixty years (it's been 30 years since Bill Clinton) and that's a lot of money to constantly replace a perfectly good set of dishes.

by Anonymousreply 23March 12, 2023 1:48 PM

Apparently, state dinners have grown in size over the last century. Guests can't be served on mismatched china. I think they actually have to have a lot of state dinners in the East Room now, and sometimes even use the Red Room for spillover.

Caroline Harrison was regarded as one of the more artistic and tasteful First Ladies. Her design looks more contemporary than it is.

by Anonymousreply 27March 12, 2023 1:56 PM

Trump tried to get Judy Chicago's Dinner Party pussy service gifted to the White House. Melania was not amused but called it Locker Room talk.

Truman followed by FDR. Most of the others are plain too fussy.

Simple green and gold are elegant. Congrats to Bess.

R16 Love the Hayes’ oyster plate!

by Anonymousreply 32March 12, 2023 5:01 PM

Of the ones pictured, I only like the Truman china (love that green). Nancy Reagan's red is a distant second. My Fiesta-loving heart really goes for r14's suggestions.

I love the Hayes china! It looks very modern.

Thank you, R12, I am relieved. I knew Michele had better taste!

by Anonymousreply 36March 13, 2023 1:05 PM

Shame that Lenox's US kilns, which fired many of these services, went cold in 2020.

So these couldn't be made in America today. Lenox was the last in the industry here. Double shame.
