I don't know that there's anything matching all your criteria, but I'd suggest Missing.

Sorry OP, didn’t see that you wanted movies from the 70s-80s.
The Quiet American is set during the early 50s when Vietnam was still a French colony and The Lover was set in 1929, ditto.

I'll accept those r4! I was also thinking of The Letter with Bette Davis as a similar older one.

There was a recent one with Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan that was good. They had to escape from a hotel...

I love the atmosphere of Saint Jack. It's the atmosphere of these movies.

Walkabout has some similar vibes. And the Vietnam part of Deer Hunter.

R3 really good movie! Of course it’s never on TV or anything - I’m guessing it made next to no money.

Do you watch French films? A lot of Jean-Paul Belmondo movies are like what you describe. That Man From Rio is my favorite - it’s from the mid-60s but quite vibrant.

I love the Year Of Living Dangerously. Yes, there are problems, but overall, I think it's a great film.

The TV miniseries "The Jewel in the Crown," about the Partition and Independence of India in the 1940s, but made in the mid 80s.

Justine (1969), with Michael York and Anouk Aimee, about sex, gunrunning, and intrigue in 1930s Alexandria.

I'd also recommend the 1983 miniseries "Reilly Ace of Spies," starring Sam Neill, which is about the real-life inspiration for James Bond, the spy Sidney Reilly. There are some episodes set in very out of the way places (like Baku) during the first quarter of the century.
