Keto diets linked to Cardiac Issues
Duh 🙄 There is no way eating a red meat and processed meat diet can be healthy.
CNN — A low-carb, high-fat “keto-like” diet may be linked to higher levels of “bad” cholesterol and double the risk of cardiovascular events such as blocked arteries, heart attacks and strokes, according to new research.
“Our study found that regular consumption of a self-reported diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat was associated with increased levels of LDL cholesterol – or “bad” cholesterol – and a higher risk of heart disease,” lead study author Dr. Iulia Iatan with the Healthy Heart Program Prevention Clinic, St. Paul’s Hospital and University of British Columbia’s Centre for Heart Lung Innovation in Vancouver, Canada, said in a news release.

“Our study rationale came from the fact that we would see patients in our cardiovascular prevention clinic with severe hypercholesterolemia following this diet,” Iatan said during a presentation at the session.
Hypercholesterolemia, or high cholesterol, increases a person’s risk of heart attack or other adverse cardiovascular events.
“This led us to wonder about the relationship between these low-carb, high-fat diets, lipid levels and cardiovascular disease. And so, despite this, there’s limited data on this relationship,” she said.
The researchers compared the diets of 305 people eating a LCHF diet with about 1,200 people eating a standard diet, using health information from the United Kingdom database UK Biobank, which followed people for at least a decade.

The researchers found that people on the LCHF diet had higher levels of low-density lipoprotein, also known as LDL, cholesterol and apolipoprotein B. Apolipoprotein B is a protein that coats LDL cholesterol proteins and can predict heart disease better than elevated levels of LDL cholesterol can.
Ad feedback The researchers also noticed that the LCHF diet participants’ total fat intake was higher in saturated fat and had double the consumption of animal sources (33%) compared to those in the control group (16%).
“After an average of 11.8 years of follow-up – and after adjustment for other risk factors for heart disease, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and smoking – people on an LCHF diet had more than two-times higher risk of having several major cardiovascular events, such as blockages in the arteries that needed to be opened with stenting procedures, heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial disease,” researchers found, according to the news release.
The researchers said in the release that their study “can only show an association between the diet and an increased risk for major cardiac events, not a causal relationship,” because it was an observational study, but their findings are worth further study, “especially when approximately 1 in 5 Americans report being on a low-carb, keto-like or full keto diet.”

No surprise there. Our bodies weren't designed to be "lifehacked" by these cheat codes like keto. Eat a balanced diet and exercise, that's literally it.

"No surprise there. Our bodies weren't designed to be "lifehacked" by these cheat codes like keto. Eat a balanced diet and exercise, that's literally it."
And don't eat all day and certainly not late. Not eating after dinner or after, say, after a small snack at 8 pm on most days (there will always be outlier days), was never trendy "intermittent fasting." It was just not eating late and waiting until the next day, which usually equaled around a 12 hour intermittent fast.
As far a lifehack cheat code diets, It obviously depends on the person. My dad (age 76) has had very good luck with low carb that does include a fair amount of fat (bacon, eggs, steak) and his numbers haven't suffered. I'm not saying he possibly couldn't achieve the same thing by other means, but it seems to work for him with minimal negative consequences.
Smart moderate eating, and moderate, consistent exercise, yeah, are probably the best. I think people tend to like "Lifehack" diets because they feel stuck and the big change can bring about a big jump start where they see weight loss results sooner. Also, I really think the American mentality is about affirmative behavior, rather than refraining from behavior. A keto diet is obviously refraining from carbs, but you can also tell yourself it's "I can eat all the meat and cheese that I want." It's a peculiar "all in" mindset that Americans seem to like.

Going keto will raise your cholesterol, but if you're 200 pounds overweight, you're already fucked anyway. Anything that helps you lose weight is worth doing. You can resolve cholesterol later, she said.

I do a modified keto. I eat more vegetables and have fruit sometimes, but it's ridiculous to assume everyone is just eating processed meats and red meat all day or a dozen eggs cooked in butter with a side of bacon and a slice of avocado.
I avoid grains/bread, but I have cheat days here and there.

The Keto diet is a perverted version of the old Stillman diet.
Stillman kept fats and oils at a minimum. It worked for me.
Back in the 1980s, I went from 304 lbs down to 214 very fast. To this day I do not have high plaque coated blood vessels. I have been tested.

I am on a long term, lightweight, low carb diet. I only avoid bad carbs, such as refined, sugar, white bread, white pasta, and the sugary fruit such as bananas and oranges. However, I’ll eat berries and leafy vegetables. Except for people who are very obese or want to lose weight quickly, I think extracting vegetables and fruits from your diet is very unwise and healthy.

"A limitation of the study is that participants provided dietary information at only one point in time, which should be considered when interpreting the study findings, Iatan said. Moreover, self-reports of food consumption can be inaccurate, though Iatan said this questionnaire has been extensively validated.
Because the study was observational, it can only show an association between the diet and an increased risk for major cardiac events, not a causal relationship. However, Iatan said the findings merit further research in prospectively designed studies, especially when approximately 1 in 5 Americans report being on a low-carb, keto-like or full keto diet."

I think it's true that low-carb diets work better for some than others. A friend is diabetic, and when he eats Keto, he loses weight, his A1C improves, his LDL cholesterol level drops, and he feels his best. When I tried Keto, I didn't even lose any weight, and felt like shit!
So I'm intermittent fasting instead, 8/16.

Here’s the problem with all of these “studies”. It’s never a one size fits all. Who paid for this study? What industry is promoting this study? Maybe the grain industry? Every few years the diet industry comes out with the new holy grail as the next thing that will save us all. And it’s all just repackaged and repurposed. It comes down to portion control and exercise. Plain and simple.

If you’re keto and near a Whole Foods, sometimes there’s a ground beef and cabbage dish on the hot bar that’s really good. I want to make it at home with grass-fed beef but I haven’t quite decoded the recipe yet.

[1] This study hasn't been peer-reviewed nor published yet. It was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session Together With the World Congress of Cardiology.
[2] The study defines "low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diet as 45% of total daily calories coming from fat and 25% coming from carbohydrates". Assuming 2000 calories/day, 25% of 2000 calories = 500 calories. 500 calories at 4g carbs/calorie = 125g carbs. 125g of carbs would easily knock a person out of ketosis unless they're an athlete or fasting (one meal/day). To establish and maintain ketosis requires carbs to be limited to between 20g and 50g/day.
You know what? Come talk to me after the study has been peer-reviewed and published. Until then, this study used "keto" as clickbait.

A new report from the American Heart Association gives its lowest rankings, using a scale of 0 to 100, to some of the buzziest diets widely touted on social media. These included very-low-carb regimens like the Atkins and ketogenic diets (31 points) and the paleo diet (53 points).
The heart association gave its highest mark — a score of 100 — to the DASH pattern of eating, which stands for “dietary approaches to stop hypertension.” The diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds and low-fat dairy, while encouraging people to limit their intake of salt, fatty meats, added sugars and refined grains.

Just like Atkins or vegan, certain dietary choices can be bad if they are done improperly.
Healthy Keto is ideal. That comprises of moderate fat, moderate protein, high fiber, low carbs and next to zero sugar. Eat only grass fed meats, pasture raised dairy, grains should be minimal but whole grain organic, avoid all seed and plant oils as they are highly processed and high in Omega 6 fats which causes inflammation and causes plaque build-up in arteries. You should use only cold pressed olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil. I've been a pescatarian/vegan diet and lost over 50 pounds in the last 16 months. My cardiologist and GP rave about my blood work test results.

They act like calories don't exist. Which is pure delusion.
