Which Spice Girl was the best vocalist?

Sporty and Scary were known as the ones who could sing.

Posh was known for being unable to sing.

Baby doesn't project well in a live setting, which is presumably why she relies on tracks. But she has the nicest tone and she's the most adaptable in terms of genre. Victoria sounded ridiculous on "Holler" and Melanie C. wasn't far behind.

I think Geri is actually worse than Victoria. Geri has terrible pitch.

I don't think there's any argument that Sporty was the best and Posh was the worst. You can make an argument for who was second best.

In songs like Wannabe, everyone EXCEPT Posh has a solo. And her solo on Giving You Everything is the only one that had to be backed up and mixed with the others.

It's probably a good thing they broke up, because eventually they would have become "Mel C and the Spice Girls". She always had the solo refrains.

I'm guessing Geri saw the writing on the wall and saw it was gonna be the Mel C show and she left.

Mel C definitely had the best voice of the Spice Girls, although Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell also had decent voices and lots of charisma.

Mel B and especially Victoria Beckham were not nearly as talented as the others.

It's funny how much praise Mel C gets because compared to the rest, she sounds like a great singer. But she doesn't actually even hold a candle to singers like Adele, Xtina, Beyonce, or Gaga.

She was also the least conventionally attractive of the group, but I've seen pics of her from 2023, she's clearly had no work done; and she's prettier now than she was during her Spice Girls run. Today I think she's probably the MOST attractive of all of them. (Ok, so not really. Baby will always be the prettiest, but Mel C is aging the most gracefully. I guess being sporty paid off looks wise)

It was obvious that Victoria couldn't sing. Her only debut album so far was dreadful. She is a very nice person in real life though.

The fact that there were headlines at the time that her then new single was up against Kylie's Can't Get You Out of My Head on the charts were laughable due to the fact that there was no way in Hell that song would beat what turned out to be one of the most iconic songs of Kylie's career and all time.

Mel C. having the most successful and prolific solo career shocked me. What even shocked me more was that she turned out to be straight, got married and had a kid. I was strongly convinced as a kid that she was a lesbian and I know I'm not the only one on here either that held that belief at the time.

I thought Mel B. would've been really successful with a solo career, particularly in the U.S. but her solo albums weren't that great even though she's an excellent singer.

Geri's music is average to decent but she's a slightly above average singer.

Emma is an excellent singer. Her Free Me album is her Magnum Opus.

I always felt a tiny bit sorry for Mel C, because I thought she might have had an even better solo career had she not been a Spice Girl. Her Spice Girl persona as Sporty Spice meant she couldn't dress up her hair for album covers or wear nice clothes, and so even though she was pretty enough and had the best voice, she was known for dressing like she just came out of a kick-boxing class and for doing backflips. And since she was Mel C and Scary was Mel B, they each seemed more generic.

Still, she's a multi-millionaire now, so she didn't do too badly. And she did have the best solo career of all of them.

Mel C is the best vocalist, as others have noted. Mel B, Baby, and Ginger are all decent singers too. Posh was the black sheep of the group. She never seemed happy to be there, and her vocals were always buried in the mix, to the point that she’s not even identifiable in most of their songs.

Mel C’s voice is nails on a chalkboard. Emma Bunton’s was the most pleasant.

Geri is not a decent singer.

I saw the Spice Girls in concert in 2009 or so when they reunited and toured the states.

Each girl sang one of their solo songs. When it was Posh's turn she walked down the runway that jutted out from the stage like she was a model. Even she knows she cant sing.

Some anecdotes:

Sporty was the only one who had professional singing experience when she joined.

The group was initially going to be called Touch.

Ginger was originally called Sexy Spice but they changed it to appeal to a broader/younger audience.

I always thought Ginger looked sort of trashy.

Maybe I'm just uncultured, but Geri's vocals in R36's clip don't sound offensive to me. Bland, sure, but it doesn't grate the ears. Compared to something like Fergie's legendary rendition of the National Anthem, Geri sounds like Celine Dion.

R29 sis is STRUGGLING over those backing tracks. I have always liked Mel B though. She seems like a fun gal—all of them, save Victoria, do. I remember seeing an interview once with Courtney Love on Graham Norton, and for some reason or another, the topic of Posh Spice came up. Courtney responded with a hilarious double-edged sword, commenting: "She's nice—enough."

R38 How was Ginger originally Sexy Spice? They got their nicknames from the U.K.’s Top of the Pops magazine and they stuck.

Mel C. I met her once and she was lovely. Love this song by her and it is a shame it wasn’t a bigger hit.

I went to see Blood Brothers with Mel C as the mother and my god it's a rubbish musical and she was tolerable in it.

All of the Spice Girls had good pop voices but they're not great singers. Mel B has a great low tone and the "look for the rainbow in every storm" moment in Goodbye is a great pop moment but she's no Diana Ross.

I always remember Charlotte Church slagging off Girls Aloud's singing abilities when she launched her ill fated pop career. Technically she's a gifted singer but she couldn't interpret a song and her lower register sounded like she had a bad cold.

I’m a big fan of Mel C. She’s had a pretty extended solo career and some really great songs. I love this one.

Sporty and Scary both actually had tendencies to go sharp and flat (though obviously that’s not detectable on record). They perhaps had more powerful voices than Baby, but Baby had had the foresight to go to a decent music teacher (the late Kate Young, former MD of Les Mis and other shows) and develop her ear sufficiently not to sing out of tune.

Always loved this one. They have great chemistry and she somehow looks better now.
