Man he was handsome
Interesting fact: the famous literary, music and cultural critic Edward Said (who was also a professor of English at Columbia) was severely bullied by Omar Sharif in high school in Egypt.

^^^Just as the designer and photographer Cecil Beaton was severely bullied in private school by novelist Evelyn Waugh.

R1 Omar Sharif Jr. is the grandson of actor Omar Sharif. He’s gay, Jewish, and lives in Los Angeles, where he works for the Holocaust Museum LA.

A gloriously handsome man who sadly had Dementia when he died.

Long romantic scene starts at 49 mins. Omar with his original teeth. So charming. But as you know from his western career, he was pretty good in physical roles too, not just romance.

Both Omar Sharif and Peter O'Toole were very handsome in 'Lawrence of Arabia.'

He aged so beautifully.
And was a wizz at bridge.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 5, 2023 7:29 PM |
R13 Sharif was so expert at bridge that he wrote a weekly column about it for the Chicago Tribune which was also printed in the Los Angeles Times.

I met Sharif’s grandson, Omar Jr, several years ago at a fundraising event for the Academy Museum. I wasn’t aware at the time that he was gay, but my gaydar definitely pinged when we shook hands. He was very well-spoken and charming. He has said that his grandfather didn’t have a problem with him being gay, but his mother did. She told him not to let his Holocaust-surviving grandmother know. He responded, “She survived Auschwitz, but this would kill her?”

R18. That photo was taken at the Polo Lounge in the Beverly Hills Hotel. It looks like they’re in the third booth to the right of the entry.

i knew of him. Knew he was a foreign actor. But didn't really know what he looked like or any of his movies. Well, last summer, I decided to watch the FUNNY GIRL film for the first time amid the Broadway revival fiasco. One thing I was *not* expecting was to discover how gorgeous Oma Sharif was. The way movie stars should be. Took my breath away. That face was made for close-ups!
Incidentally, I was also surprised by how great Barbra Streisand looked in this. I haven't watched her earlier films, just her '90s stuff like THE PRINCE OF TIDES and THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES in which she did not look her best. But she looked pretty-to-stunning throughout FUNNY GIRL.
Nevertheless, Omar was the fairest of them all! 😂

R24 About 20 years ago, I had an invitation to an event at the Skirball Cultural Center in LA. Omar Sharif was a featured speaker, and I think one of his films was also shown. Unfortunately I didn’t attend the event. I later heard that Streisand was also there as an audience member.

The shot in Lawrence of Arabia of him riding towards the camera, from a speck in the shimmering desert heat to a medium shot of his dismount is, for me one of the great character introduction shots in cinema.

I saw him twice, a few years apart, at the Intercontinental Cairo, which was by the way a down-low gay watering hole, and has a pool. His sometime home in Cairo. Once I spied him dining in the cafe above the salt water pool at the Grand Hotel in Cap-Ferrat. I would have fucked him if he would have had me, and I didn't go for daddies.

Sharif was born Michel Shalhoub. In Muslim Egypt, as a Xtian, he would have gotten nowhere, career-wise. So he converted to Islam and became Omar Sharif. And the rest is etc.

In the 1970s my father played bridge a few times with a group that included Sharif, at the State Department in Washington, DC. He said that Sharif was a very serious bridge player, and he wasn't there to socialize, which my father regretted because he had been working at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut in the early 1960s when 'Lawrence' was being filmed in nearby Jordan.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 7, 2023 3:29 PM |
R48 Wikipedia says Sharif converted to Islam when he married Faten Hamama. They later divorced. His only child from this marriage married a Jewish woman and their son, who was raised Jewish, is Omar Sharif Jr.

[quote] He comes out of the good old days of the Arab cosmopolitan culture.
The "Arab cosmopolitan culture" was the result of French/British occupation. And it was Xtians who were "cosmopolitan", not Muslims. Muslims resented Western dominance and decadence, thus the rise of Muslim nationalists like Nasser.

It was right after the Six Day War. Photos from the set of Funny Girl of Sharif kissing Streisand from the caused a scandal. Egypt threatened to revoke Sharif's citizenship, and he was villified as a traitor in the Arab press because "the Jew Streisand helps Israel".

R53 Lebanon was always more liberal and open-minded than other Middle Eastern nations because it had a significant Christian population. Apparently around 1900, there were more Christians than Muslims in the country. That began to change due to significant Christian out-migration and a higher Muslim birth rate. Now, the country is about 32% Christian and 62% Muslim. From what I’ve read, Lebanese Muslims are relatively progressive compared to Muslims in other countries. With the exception of attitudes toward Israel, of course.

R59 No one in Lebanon - not Maronite, not Melkite, not Sunni, not Shi'a, not Alawai, not Druse, not Armenian - has ever been within light years of what could be deemed "progressive", "liberal" or "open-minded". As with Egypt, for a brief period of time, French occupation provided a thin patina of Westernization. But Lebanese of all confessions were and remain extremely conservative. That conservatism has been deepened ever so slightly since Nasrallah/Hezbullah/Iran have become the defacto fist on the various leashes of Lebanon's power players.
[quote] With the exception of attitudes toward Israel, of course.
It's the Near East. There's the horseshit the Western and Arabic-speaking media spin, and then there's reality. It might help to remember that during Israel's occupation of Lebanon, the South Lebanese Army (Tzadal), organized by Israel, including Sunni Muslims, who fought for Israel against Shi'a Muslims. It might help to remember that when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, the al Sabbahs publicly stated that they would be happy if Israel helped them to remove the the dog Hussein's army.
If Lebanon wasn't such an insane asylum of 18 power-hungry confessions, they would have made peace with Israel long ago. Now, Iran won't let them.
