[quote] Why assume everyone here eats meat? Especially "hunt meat"?

This is a next level stupid response. There is no assumption. If it doesn’t apply to you, you don’t answer. No laws will be passed based on the results.

by Anonymousreply 37March 12, 2023 9:29 PM

I’ve only had rabbit and venison (that I know of). I’m not a picky eater and it was surprising to me how unpalatable I found both, but the rabbit was worse i had the venison at a chili potluck and it was Ok. I had the rabbit at a high end midtown restaurant over 20 years ago and I had to choke it down. I’d ordered it out of curiosity and it didn’t occur to me that the taste would be objectionable. And the was nothing objectively awful about tor - it was just the unfamiliarity.

I told my dad about it after the fact and his response was, “Well, it’s basically a rat.” He was pretty smart.

Venison if cooked right is quite nice. Had a version in a blackberry glacee at a high end restaurant that was delicious. My step-father hunted. My mountain woman aunt shot a bear and gave us some sausage. Fatty and made a greasy mess all over my mom's kitchen, pissing her off. Don't remember much else. Elk is supposed to be quite good.

by Anonymousreply 50June 24, 2023 8:57 PM

Chicken.

by Anonymousreply 51June 24, 2023 9:02 PM

What, no armadillo????? Despite the threat of leprosy, armadillo is worth eating. I'll spare you the suspense and say that yes, it tastes like chicken. Chicken that you have to pry out of articulated, bony plates.

I said it was good, not easy. 🦥(closest I could get to an armadillo)

R56, i am from Portugal. Here is an expensive dish, you can find it in some restaurants, usually baked in a pie. My mother does them on Christmas day in the oven, with a white sauce and fried bread. It is delicious.

I have no idea how common they are in other countries (except Spain, where they do it with a vinaigrette sauce).

Hunt meat.

by Anonymousreply 64March 10, 2024 2:42 AM

You all know what mine is...

by Anonymousreply 65March 10, 2024 2:54 AM

I've had wild boar, rabbit, venison and squirrel. I liked all of them. I liked the boar the best.

by Anonymousreply 66March 10, 2024 3:11 AM

I do not eat game. Just can't. Once tried venison and once had rabbit stew, many years ago. Can't do it.

by Anonymousreply 67March 10, 2024 3:49 AM

I love wild boar, every Sunday after we'd drop our bales to the cotton gin, Miss ReRe would watch the young ones while daddy and I would snare us a young boar, which usually gathered at the bottom of the holler. Mama would would put the boar along with turnips or whatever she had into a dutch oven into an open fire, that would cook all day. All the rest of the meat would go into the smokehouse and we'd enjoy it several months down the road, sometimes daddy would batter with Miss Jennie at the Hollingsworth mercantile and he'd trade for shoes and school supplies.

I like seitan, but the season is so very very short!

Rabbit is just chicken with flaps.

Partridge I’ve only ever ended up with half of because the hunter in question would blow the back end right off of it. Or at least that’s what it seemed like.

by Anonymousreply 72March 10, 2024 5:12 AM

Caribou have dead eyes. Probably laced with prions.

by Anonymousreply 73March 10, 2024 7:07 AM

They’re not very good conversationalists, either.

by Anonymousreply 74March 10, 2024 8:01 AM

Pheasant by far. My dad had a friend who hunted and would give us pheasant for Christmas. Tastes like chicken but richer.

by Anonymousreply 75March 10, 2024 8:10 AM

I'm partial to wild cat.

by Anonymousreply 76March 10, 2024 11:07 AM

Well, this certainly is a change from the recent spate of Joan Crawford threads....

by Anonymousreply 77March 10, 2024 12:31 PM

I’ve had some delicious wild meat, it is all about how it is prepared though.

by Anonymousreply 78March 10, 2024 12:45 PM

The wild boar I've had was a stew imported (canned) from Germany, while the squirrel I've had was shot in Kentucky by my Appalaichan neighbors. I've always wanted to try pheasant and grouse, but they're pretty expensive on D'Artagnan's website.

Except for anything porcine, a lot of the game sausage or chilli are cut with fat, generally domestic pork. They're really lean on their own and not particularly tasty.
