Chris Rock will supposedly go after Will Smith on his Netflix special tonight
by Anonymous | reply 299 | March 12, 2023 3:49 PM |
GOOD!!!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 4, 2023 9:05 AM |
I hope he goes after him. Smith's reaction was so bizarre. Even watching it back now I think it's quite shocking and it takes a lot to shock me.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 4, 2023 9:36 AM |
Will Smith must be clutching his pearls.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 4, 2023 9:44 AM |
A recent Chris Rock joke that may make it into the special:
"The other day, I watched Emancipation just so I could watch Will Smith getting whipped"
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 4, 2023 6:15 PM |
I'm watching the pre-show live stream right now.
Streaming it live on Netflix is an interesting move.
It really is adding a sense of excitement that seems very unusual for a stand-up special.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 5, 2023 1:56 AM |
Pretty astute so far
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 5, 2023 2:14 AM |
Watching it now, he's bashing Megan Markle.
Good.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 5, 2023 2:25 AM |
I'm not watching this but good for Chris Rock. It's about fucking time he said something about the Slap.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 5, 2023 2:31 AM |
It's good. He's on excellent form.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 5, 2023 2:45 AM |
I'm really enjoying it. Plenty of LOLs and insight.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 5, 2023 2:49 AM |
Me too. It's great.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 5, 2023 2:51 AM |
This should be good.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 5, 2023 2:53 AM |
Thanks for the reminder. Good for Chris.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 5, 2023 2:53 AM |
Actual privilege is hitting someone at the awards, winning an oscar and then recieving a standing ovation. Had a White actor pulled the same shit, they would have been booed, arrested and their oscar win cancelled.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 5, 2023 2:54 AM |
what has he said about Smith?
it was bizarre how so many people thought Rock deserved to get hit. Was the joke about Jada's hair stupid? absolutely and I didn't even know beforehand she had a condition. I thought it was 2022 and women can have whatever hair (or lack of hair) they want. No justification to get hit for it though
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 5, 2023 2:56 AM |
Nothing yet, an hour in.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 5, 2023 2:58 AM |
You're deep, R15. And all those data you cite for your claim that anyone thought the slap was deserved - so convincing.
Shoo, fly.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 5, 2023 2:59 AM |
Here we go!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 5, 2023 3:01 AM |
"Will Smith's wife was fucking her son's friend."
OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 5, 2023 3:04 AM |
He's going in HARD on Jada and Will. Not gonna spoil it. You gotta see this for yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 5, 2023 3:07 AM |
R17 what are you yapping about? There was a lot of online support for Smith after he slapped Rock. It was shameful
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 5, 2023 3:08 AM |
He’s venting on the Smiths big time. Good for him. Chew them up and spit ‘em out.
Don’t fight in front of white people!!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 5, 2023 3:09 AM |
Is Rock insulting Will more? It'll be a bad look if he focuses on Jada. She didn't do anything
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 5, 2023 3:11 AM |
The Smiths are done. He demolished them both.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 5, 2023 3:11 AM |
Curious if he outed them? Or at least Will?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 5, 2023 3:13 AM |
[quote] She didn't do anything
R23 is utterly clueless.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 5, 2023 3:14 AM |
Smith pretending to laugh at Chris Rocks jokes until Jada cut her eyes and muttered something under her breath.
Major chip on her shoulders and she's strange

by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 5, 2023 3:26 AM |
Selective Outrage.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 5, 2023 3:37 AM |
I could’ve done without his admiration of Smith, but Rock probably wants to frame it as him being the bigger person, not Will. His rant on Smiths selective outrage, while Smiths cunt wife basically cucked him, by revealing she fucked the sons best friend, was priceless.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 5, 2023 3:37 AM |
I hope Rock is ruthless but he won't be. Sad thing is so many people still support Will Smith.
As others have said, if it was anyone else who had done this, they would not be defended. They would be arrested, career destroyed, and tarnished on social media. Will Smith still benefits from the privilege of being Will Smith.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 5, 2023 3:40 AM |
Rock mentioned that a white guy SPIT on Smith during a film shoot and Smith did nothing.
In the after show Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said that if he'd been the one to make the Jada joke Smith wouldn't have done anything. Rock mentioned how much bigger Smith is than him and also that he got a concussion.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 5, 2023 3:41 AM |
Why have White people been dragged into this? We didn't mock Smith's wife and we didn't slap Rock either. Can't Black ever take accountability for their actions without scapegoating White people? We've had sufficient.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 5, 2023 3:44 AM |
Black *people.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 5, 2023 3:46 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 5, 2023 3:46 AM |
He'll be dragged on Twitter and be accused of bullying the Smiths and he should let it go because it was his jokes that led to him being assaulted in the first place.
Again, Smith not being held accountable.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 5, 2023 3:52 AM |
You're off on cloud coocooland. Ricky Gervais is notorious for roasting celebs, his jokes are so personal it's uncomfortable to watch. No one beat his ass even if he deserved it.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 5, 2023 3:57 AM |
Will Smith (and his wife Jada) are as slimy and shady as they come.
Jada was voted “worst wife” in the public sphere.
Perhaps it is time for all their shenanigans to be fully exposed
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 5, 2023 4:00 AM |
[quote]He'll be dragged on Twitter and be accused of bullying the Smiths and he should let it go because it was his jokes that led to him being assaulted in the first place.
R37 he discusses that at length before he got into the details. He said that there were no jokes or any simmering feud that led up to the slap.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 5, 2023 4:01 AM |
Chris Rock is a skinny, nerdy black kid who had the nerve to call out oppression his whole life.
Will Smith is a big, handsome kid who kissed up to white frat boys his whole life.
They are not the same.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 5, 2023 4:59 AM |
No one wants to be a victim.
But Will Smith is s bully, and Chris Rock was his victim.
Those are the facts.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 5, 2023 5:13 AM |
Chris Rock was bullied by Will Smith.
Rock hates women. This isn’t new.
So he went after Jada. I’m ok with that, but it’s interesting that he chose to go after her instead of Will.

R50 so supporting a Trump-loving misogynist who also said "slavery was a choice" among other anti-Black statements and then all the anti-Semitic stuff isn't enough to turn you off from someone? Got it.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 5, 2023 5:28 AM |
A little weird that Rock is choosing to [tepidly] support a lunatic like Kanye.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 5, 2023 5:34 AM |
r51 Nope. I sure don't. I don't give a shit about his political beliefs and the shit he said. If I gave a shit about the offensive words of rappers and the problematic activities they get into in their free time, I'd never listen to rap music.
But I'm sure you don't ever make such lowly music choices. I'm sure if one were to sift through your music library one wouldn't find any compositions by Richard Wagner or Heinrich Schenker. Because you're so above it all.
STFU. Nobody cares.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 5, 2023 5:44 AM |
A very funny special that covered a lot of ground. The slap was only part of it, but Chris pretty much dismantled Will and Jada at the height of Oscar season, which I appreciated.
Not a Kardashian fan but his conflation of Kris Jenner and the Statue of Liberty was hilarious.

Hell, that had a definite knife edge to it. I figured he was saving Will Smith for last and he was brutal when he got there. Smith and baldy completely deserved it.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 5, 2023 6:42 AM |
He never, ever holds back about OJ's guilt in front of clearly uncomfortable black audiences.
And I loved when he said — of Joan Rivers in her eighties — "You don't want to go out (on stage) after Joan. You just don't."

I always thought Chris was quite handsome, too.
He's not as young as he used to be, but who is?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 5, 2023 8:48 AM |
God that last ten minutes was brutal. I am definitely not up to speed on the whole "entanglement" thing, but I got the gist. He killed it and he killed Will and Jada.
Good for Rock. He comes across as the winner in the whole thing. And it's not even close.
While this wasn't a laugh out loud funny very often, it was insightful, clever and at times brilliant.
He's a great comic.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 5, 2023 9:25 AM |
That was an assassination. As it should have been.
The final denouement for me was: [paraphrased]:
"YOUR WIFE FUCKS YOUR SON'S FRIEND, THEN INTERVIEWS YOU ABOUT IT ON TV. THATS SOME [Bold]LOW DOWN[/Bold] SHIT!!!! WHO DOES THAT? BUT YOU THEN SLAP THE SHIT OUTTA ME???"
Glad he went there. That fucking skifooza deserved it as much as Will did.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 5, 2023 9:28 AM |
'You all know what happened to me, getting slapped by Suge Smith. Everybody knows, everybody f****** knows,' he began.
'I got smacked at the f****** Oscars by this motherf*****. And people are like "Did it hurt?" It still hurts. I got Summertime ringing in my ear f***** drums.
'But I'm not a victim, you will never see me on Oprah or Gayle crying you will never see it, like, "I couldn't believe it and I love Men in Black." No, it's never going to happen.
I took that hit like Pacquiao mother f*****,' Rock said, referring to Manny Pacquiao, a professional boxer.
He noted that 'Will Smith is significantly bigger than me. We are not the same size.
'Will Smith does most of his movies with his shirt off. You've never seen me do a movie with my shirt off. If I'm in a movie getting open heart surgery, I'm in a sweater,' Rock joked.
'Will Smith played Mohammed Ali in a movie, you think I auditioned for that part? He played Mohammed Ali, I played Pookie in New Jack City. I played a piece of corn in Pootie Tang. S*** even in animation this motherf****** [is] bigger: I'm a zebra, he's a shark.
'But Will Smith practices selective outrage because everyone that knows what happened, everybody that really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that s***. I didn't have any entanglements.
'His wife was f***** her son's friend.'
'Now I normally wouldn't talk about this s***,' Rock said. 'But for some reason these n****** put that shit on the Internet. I have no idea why two talented people would do something that f***** low down. What the f***.
'We've all been cheated on, everybody in here has been cheated on. None of us have been interviewed by the person that cheated on us on television, like "Hey I was sucking somebody else's d***, how did that make you feel?" Why the f*** would you do that s***?' he asked, referring to a sit-down interview Jada gave Will in 2020.
'She hurt him way more than he hurt me, OK,' Rock insisted, noting that following the slap: 'Everybody in the world called him a b***.
'I tried to call the motherf***** and give him my condolences. He wouldn't pick up for me.
'Everybody called him a b****,' the comedian continued. 'And who is he hitting? Me a n**** her knows h can be beat. That is some b**** a** s***. That I what the f*** happened, OK. I didn't do nothing to this motherf*****.
'Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars,' Rock recounted, referring to 2016, when Jada was going to boycott the awards ceremony as part of the #OscarsSoWhite protests.
'I shouldn't host because her man did not get nominated for [Concussion], the biggest piece of s**** ever. She starts it, I finished it.
'Nobody's picking on this b****- she started it. Nobody was picking on her. And then this n***** gives me a f****** concussion, OK. What the f*** man?'
'I love Will Smith, my whole life I loved this man - I watched him open for Run DMC at the Nassau Coliseum. I have rooted for Will Smith my whole life and now I watch Emancipation just to see him get whooped. Got me rooting for Masa.
'A lot of people are like "Chris why didn't you do nothing back?" Because I got parents that's why, because I was raised,' he concluded.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 5, 2023 10:25 AM |
I think the reviews don't matter. What matters is that people watched it and everyone knows he ripped Will Smith and his wife apart. It was effective.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 5, 2023 10:32 AM |
Some of the reviews seem biased. The Will apologists of course hated it.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 5, 2023 10:38 AM |
The beef with Jada started when she criticized him for hosting the Oscars, and his complaint was that she was trying to get him to turn down a paying gig. She was, she was saying that he cared more about the paying gig than her cause, which is ENTIRELY his right. Maybe he didn't think her cause was just, which is also completely fine. BUT he is a celebrity and sometimes celebrities are asked to boycott something. That's how the game works. He could have said no, moved on, but instead he's been bitching for six years about it, to the point that he's sounding like a little kid with the "she started it" crap.
People who hate Jada and Will are going to love what he said, but I think a lot of people don't care that much, and others remember that time he encouraged Louis CK and Ricky Gervais to call black people the n-word, and for that bit he did 25 years ago that made him so famous, about how some black people really are the n-words. That's catering to a white audience, but then he says he was raised not to fight in front of white people. It doesn't ring true.

This right here, I mean he WAS CRYING during the bit, AND he said that whole thing about how he loved Will Smith. He did exactly what he said he wasn't going to do! The only thing is that he didn't do it on Oprah, which I guess to him makes it different, but I don't know how.

No, because his whole deal was about making it look like Will was cuckolded by an evil woman, and Will took that humiliation out on him.
Once you bring up the poorly hidden fact that they're both bi and/or closeted and in an open relationship, that takes the sting out of the "cuck" insult.

by Anonymous | reply 81 | March 5, 2023 11:52 AM |
I'm not who you asked r79 but I saw the comment and went to look for myself, and there are some bad reviews out there.
The Independent 3/5 stars, "Uninspired" and "powered by Botox"
THR: "Conspicuously canned," "between dated and embalmed"
USA Today: "Chris Rock is a sad old man yelling at clouds"
Indiewire: "nothing special" and "in no way built to last"
NPR: Mixed review but they note that this was "comedy from a guy who has been rich and famous a while"
I honestly couldn't find a good review, though Rolling Stone might count, but it was more of a summary of the show. NYT and CNN were just summaries.

I didn't even think to check the Post, they've been publishing articles that are basically ads for the special, and their review is praising Chris Rock for "taking on wokeness," so that kind of speaks for itself.
The Telegraph: 3/5 stars, "selectively funny"
The Sunday Times: 4/5 stars, I can't get to the review because of paywall but it appears to be positive

I'm black and my parents were saying the black people versus n-words thing for years. So, no, he wasn't catering to a white audience. I know now we're all supposed to reclaim the N word and call each other that, but only trash and the misguided use that word. And if anyone black uses that word around, I tell them not to or I just leave the situation.
I don't hate Jada and Will, but Jada is full of herself. My biggest issue with the people who went after Chris for making fun of Jada's condition, that no one knew about, was all the people saying that you're not supposed to make fun of black women's hair. What an inane comment. It's obvious (because he SAYS it) that his response was to the "catering to a white audience " accusation. How do you have a problem with someone answering, "No, my family is black and I grew up hearing it"? You just didn't like the substance of what he said, so you're picking on him.

Good is always good. Bad is always bad. Will Smith is bad. He did a bad thing, and you can't change that. I'm amused by it, because I'm twisted. But he did a stupid, bad thing and you will not change that and his ACTUAL victim, who is a comedian, gets to joke and tease about it, without violence, however he wants. No paid for press gets to judge or stop that.
Good is always good. Bad is always bad.

The reviews either slam him without giving examples or give away the entire routine. They're terrible, too. USA Today says he's too rich to be funny.
I thought he was too middle of the road--the Republicans are liars but the Democrats don't tell all the truth.

R28, 👏. As someone pointed out above, watching the Slap it was shocking. I actually thought and sti do Smith entered some type of mental breakdown trance. What he did was outrageously but could be forgiven with the passage of time.
However their behavior after the incident is what is appealing to me. No humility. They apologize but with pretense. Just in general how they behaved since the incident last year. I think Will Smith might actually be done.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | March 5, 2023 4:16 PM |
R34 you know what. This might be the realest anti blame whitey comment on this site. And you are right. You are 100% correct.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 5, 2023 4:19 PM |
R118 depends on their prenup or if there even is one. Smith always seemed kind of dumb to me, who pretty much lucked into his career, not unlike Marky Mark, coasting on their good looks, even though Smith has ears the size of Dumbo. There might be some affection or even love between the two. Who knows? He may think it’s not worth the effort to divorce her, considering she’d take him to the cleaners and then some, depending on the state of the prenup. She’s just the type of cunt to do so. They have an open marriage anyway. Since the kids are just about or all grown and will be out of the house, it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves, considering what went down last year on the biggest night of his career.

R123 Nothing about Will Smith seems dumb. I think he actually loves her.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 5, 2023 4:22 PM |
It might be the Scientology influence, but both Smiths seem completely unaware of how wealthy, powerful people (which they are) behave.
They’re not edgy kids any more. They should be moving into the “new old guard” phase of their careers. Yet they’re still trying to be provocative and “real.”
Especially weird considering Will Smith built his career in being safe and inoffensive to white people.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 5, 2023 4:28 PM |
R124 then he wouldn’t tolerate her bullshit. I honestly don’t why he would subject himself to going on her lame podcast and discussing her fucking the sons friend. I think there’s a part of her that gets off cuckolding him and keeping him in check. He brings in most of the mega bucks, but it’s that cunt wife of his who rules that household. They’re both nuts to be honest.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | March 5, 2023 4:31 PM |
Will and Jada are Scientos, they don't talk about it publicly and for the most part the gossips don't really dwell on it too much. They are an odd couple, but they aren't dummies. Jada's Oscars So White was about Will not getting nominated, she doesn't give a fuck about diversity. They are two odd ducks who found each other and stay together because it's easier for the business and the brand. DL has cast Jada as some militant woke black woman, and to be fair she plays that up when it benefits her, but for anyone who knows her/them, that is not their life.

Yeah because no one in Hollywood has ever done anything worse🙄 please STFU. DL posters in here outraged that Will got a standing ovation forget this is the same audience that gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation as well. Selective outraged indeed. A Baldwin brother shoots an innocent woman dead on a movie set and hasn't gotten the vitriol that the Smiths have received and his bloated murdering ass had the gall to speak on the slap! What a lack of self awareness. Will Smith is one of the biggest box office draws of all time with a thirty year career we're not talking about some instagram influencer. It hard to ruin a thirty year career over this one incident and people in here shocked that Will still has fans haven't been paying attention. If he continues to lay low and does it long enough he can have the comeback of the century.

Will Smith was always very opposite to the image he sells. There have always been stories.

That was an accident. How can you compare the two?
by Anonymous | reply 132 | March 5, 2023 5:24 PM |
If Will Smith had slapped Chris Rock in a nightclub, or at a restaurant, or at a private party, it would be no big deal.
The thing is, he did it AT THE OSCARS. Hollywood's biggest night. The night the motion picture industry dedicates every year to patting itself on the back, in front of a worldwide audience. A night which marks a tradition that goes back decades, in which some of the greatest legends in entertainment history are recognized for their greatest work.
He not only sullied the entire industry with his idiotic actions, he made the entire Oscar machinery, and therefore Hollywood as a whole, look absolutely terrible because of their tone-deaf response by allowing him to remain at the ceremony, seemingly rewarding his violent buffoonery with an Oscar (although that's not how it works, it sort of felt like that anyway), giving him a standing ovation, letting him in at all the after parties, etc.
I wouldn't go so far to say he's completely done...but it's not inconceivable that he may be, at least for the near future. I don't think he'll ever go back to being the box office titan he was before. I'm pretty sure that aspect of his career is done.
But Hollywood also loves a good comeback story, so a few years down the line, we'll may be seeing him in some major projects again. Or, he may be reduced to making Tyler Perry schlock, just to pay the bills. Could go either way.

My guess is that the Smiths would have to divorce for Will to make a decent comeback. But I am sure Jada wants no part of that.
The problem is that they insist on having such a presence as a family, and no one likes that. Their children are good-looking but incredibly spoiled, while Jada is a not-very-bright loudmouth.

by Anonymous | reply 141 | March 5, 2023 6:30 PM |
r130, I agree with your general point about the hypocrisy and selective outrage of Hollywood and bigots.
I part company with you on one thing with your comparisons to Polanski and Baldwin.
I didn't turn on my TV to watch the annual, can't-look-away-from-the-trainwreck of the AAs telecast ( and, of course, the DL thread) and expect to see, or want to see, a crime committed before my very eyes.
And no, to use the word "crime" isn't hyperbole. Smith's actions met the elements of, at least, disorderly conduct. And perpetrated, in real time, before an audience of millions.
I agree with you that Polanski's sexual assault of a child, and Baldwin causing the death of another human being are worse.
Still, Smith should've been immediately escorted by security from the scene.
And, of course, the sickening Standing O, and Smith's equally self-serving acceptance speech were enough to make a person puke.
I'm so glad Rock refused the offer to host this year's awards. Why should he let that room-full of chicken-shit hypocrites off the hook by giving them an opportunity to give Rock a Standing O?
And that's exactly what they seek and he'd be doing if Rock were to host - absolving them of their terrible act of applauding Smith.
Fuck that.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | March 5, 2023 6:32 PM |
R130 I feel your sentiment. And the standing ovation was due to the fact many still did not know the slap wasn’t scripted until after the show. I think it’s so dumb that people keep reciting it as Hollywood approval if bad behavior. I’m not saying he should be canceled but on my opinion he will not bounce back from this career wise.
People do not like hypocrites. How do you go from publicity starting an Oscarsowhite campaign to publicly slapping a black host over a joke 5 yrs later. And then spend the next year giving one apology and making a ton of excuses.

by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 5, 2023 6:37 PM |
R135 I remembered that. I’ve argued with people about that. It’s crazy. The Smiths have no self awareness. People like Marlon Brando actually stood for something. The Smith stand for nothing but themselves.

It was never about Oscars So White, but 'Oscars Aren't into Will Smith' wouldn't have packed the same punch. And that is not a defense of the real issue that is the lack of diversity problem with the Oscars. But Jada used Oscars So White as a Trojan Horse because Will wasn't nominated. Neither Jada nor Will give two fucks about diversity in Hollywood. Trust me on that one.

of course, she does. . . Jada was always a freak, Will was more conservative. If scientology hadn't pushed her into his limelight, there's no telling where she would be. Separate from Will, her celeb could have been bigger than other black actresses of 90s. She's said as much (sans scientology part that will never be confirmed) . It's easy to see how someone could be messed up by that and trapped in marriage that's too much of an investment and financial hassle to leave but hate being in. That use dto be representative of many traditional relationships. And most of your parents before their (3rd, 5th) divorce.
I don't doubt she weaponizes her sexuality to deal with multiple issues. I'd toss her into the overachiever category, She reminds me of a certain goldwater girl.

No apology. No addressing the victim. No LAPD. No addressing a criminal assault on live television during a global telecast.

Yeah, celebrities can get away with a lot, but sometimes what they've done is just too tangible--Mel Gibson's drunken racist rants on audio. He made a couple of films afterwards, but he never recovered his career and, like Smith, he was a huge star.
Rock and Netflix timed the special well--it's Oscar season and Smith's movie came out recently, so Smith has been in the news.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | March 5, 2023 8:17 PM |
This would have worked better 4 weeks after the slap. Otherwise, it felt it was made in the 90s.
Jada's a twisted bitch and Will Smith is a whipped cuck but Chris relies on his coked-up-Rochester-from-Jack-Benny delivery to sell this material. He didn't need a year to craft the 9 minutes of Will and Jada material I saw in this special. No annihilations occurred and nothing wasn't revealed that hadn't already been overshared by the Smiths. The Kardashian bit was funny.
Otherwise, it was high school talent show funny--where a teacher told the kid "You could be the next Chris Rock!"

r147 August Aslina is older than their son. He wasn't a minor. He's 30 now. He was at least 21 when he met the Smiths, but he probably didnt enter their circle until his mid 20s. Thats why when Rock made the remark I was a bit confused but then I forgot the Smiths let their teenage kids hang out and befriend grown adults.
Btw, again this is a standup act. The wording of "your wife fucked your son's friend" could have been delivered for the comedic affect. It is actually the first I even heard that August and Jaden Smith were friends independent of the Smith parents.

I really enjoyed the special which isn’t a surprise since I’m a Chris Rock fan. I think he did a really good job at expressing just how pissed off he still is as well as how hurt he was because he was such a huge fan of Will’s since the beginning of Will’s career. And he also was able to make it clear, with humor, that Will slapping Chris was not in any way actually about Chris. That’s just who he spontaneously chose to lash out at because he could get away with it. Will’s real issue is of course having the whole world know his wife cheated on him and doesn’t even feel bad about it enough to keep that shit private.
The majority of the show wasn’t even about the Will thing tho. He covered a lot of topics.

The interesting things was he emphasized he is no longer romantically involved so his relationship with Lake Bell is over. I guess they commiserated over making movies no one wants to see.

R184 well now they have a crisis team to intervene in case another Smith type incident ever happens again. But I don’t blame you. Smith basically shit all over that show, and got away with it. The streaker was nearly 50 years ago at the 74 Oscars. You’d think they’d realize anything can go wrong and have plans to deal with whatever goes down on the show. The La La Land Moonlight fiasco was another thing (but not as egregious as Smith) where they just stood there with their thumbs up their asses while the producers of LLL were allowed to speak for minutes. With Smith, you simply escort him out of that building. There’s plenty of cops and security at the Oscars, and it could’ve been taken care of during a commercial or even before. The fact they did nothing is appalling.

[quote]The wording of "your wife fucked your son's friend" could have been delivered for the comedic affect. It is actually the first I even heard that August and Jaden Smith were friends independent of the Smith parents.
It was a rumor at the time that August was an underage teenage friend of Jaden's, and Chris was just spreading the rumor. It wasn't true, August is a lot older than that and I don't think he and Jaden were friends.

You equate recognized with rewarded. I wrote " rewarded," you wrote " recognized." You missed the point, but I'm not going to call you " stupid." That's the fall back when someone doesn't have an argument.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | March 7, 2023 6:39 PM |
I think what some you are doing is failing to separate this from race. Jada shrewdly uses race as a card to play politically, and Chris doesn’t want to give up paid work over politics, and he’s offended that he’s expected to do that to keep Queen Jada happy. And Will can’t use his words.
None of it has much to do with race. I also found it hilarious that Chris said his mother taught him not to fight in front of white people lololol. So glad he did this show in Baltimore.
I will say though, as I get older, I’m becoming *more* liberal, not less, and I am very very tight with many black people, and it makes me more aware how conservative many black people can be (like Chris). But the difference between a black Conservative versus a White Conservative is night and day.

by Anonymous | reply 238 | March 7, 2023 8:58 PM |
I couldn't get past the fact that he repeated every single sentence twice-- as if the audience was deaf and/or stupid. I don't ever think I saw him do this kind of delivery before. (but please correct me if I am wrong). I found the repetition annoying. That said, I thought his takedown of Will and Jada was good, even though he seemed to be still very angry (who could blame him?).

Will Smith did not get away with a thing, he torched a career he carefully built in a violent and most public way.
If the producers of the show, had treated this incident like a medical emergency, gone to commercial while security escorted the Smiths out of the theater and called up the substitute host to replace Chris Rock, the Smiths might have still have careers.
As it is, they are finished.

R253
Basically. Chris Rock is a very much sexual traditionalist. His shtick is a sharp tongued geek but he possesses an old fashioned black machismo. He cheats on his wife, they try to patch it up, he keeps fucking around, she takes half and he’s very, very sorry. So far so normal.
Will and Jada are not traditionalists, they didn’t come from stable middle class homes like Chris, and they’re both pretty weird. They have a mutual open arrangement. Consider Bill Clinton - play outside if you like but keep it quiet and respectful and know where your home is. Will slept around and people gossiped, they separated, Jada hooked up with August. Only August blabbed.
The idea that Will Smith would talk about their open marriage, and how Jada didn’t cheat, publicly and to her, is mind boggling to traditional black men. They consider it completely emasculating. It’s one thing for men to confess their infidelity, it’s one thing for wives to get mad at their husbands infidelity, but for a woman to talk about her own extra-marital relationship fills them with rage.
It’s the black version of screaming “cuck” and “soy boy”.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | March 8, 2023 5:42 AM |
[quote] so if the affair was with Will's blessing, then what point is Chris Rock trying to make by saying that Jada had hurt Chris so badly that he had to slap someone else? I don't get it.
From what I saw from the stand up, Chris almost seemed affronted on Will’s behalf that she’s made him look like a cuckolded fool and has embarrassed the tell out of him. I think that’s his ax to grind with Jada.

by Anonymous | reply 260 | March 8, 2023 7:07 AM |
So why did Will slap Chris? The hair joke was rather tame. I get that Jada didn't think it funny, but that is all part of the show. These types of jokes have been going on at the "expense" of celebrities for ages--men, women, child, black, white-- and the big players know to smile because the attention and rewards are endless for just being civil.
by Anonymous | reply 261 | March 8, 2023 7:39 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 290 | March 9, 2023 5:13 AM |
It wasn't Jada or Rock. Will is a narcissist. His star has been falling for quite some time and he's lashing out. He used to be a superstar but hasn't had a blockbuster in years. He became a laughingstock because he made his weirdo family the center of his public persona. His Oscar was a lifetime achievement award from the industry to say 'thanks for all the money you made us in the 90s, now fuck off'. He dramatic chops are limited, the 50+ male action genre played out, his comedic options thin as his type of humor suited his younger years. He should have taken the hint and transitioned completely to producing. Now he's fucked, because no one wants to work with him because of the slap. His fans jump on Rock, but Rock didn't kill Smith's reputation or career. Smith did.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | March 9, 2023 6:56 AM |
r291 that made me think of The Rock, wonder how long he remain popular in action movies? I think he is wearing on people's nerves and he fought with his studio when his superhero movie bombed. Now he has a show kind of like 'Everybody Hates Chris' that Rock had.
