David Hyde Pierce

Born in upstate New York to middle class parents, he learn to play the organ at his hometown's Episcopal Church. He enrolled in Yale wanting to study classical piano, but graduated with a double major in English Literature and Theater.

Like most aspiring actors, he moved to New York City after graduation, where he took odd jobs such as selling ties and being a security guard. Soon, he would get his debut in television working alongside John Forsythe and Holland Taylor. Then came his big break: as the snobby and pretentious younger brother of Dr. Frasier Crane in the hilarious spin off of the show Cheers, where he received four Emmys.

Besides Frasier, he has a diverse in films: Little Man Tate, Sleepless in Seattle, The Addams Family Values, Wolf, Nixon, A Bug's Life, Isn't She Great, Wet Hot American Summer, Osmosis Jones, Full Frontal, Treasure Planet, Hellboy, and The Perfect Host.

Let's discuss the American actor David Hyde Pierce.

One of my favorite actors of all time.

by Anonymousreply 1March 4, 2023 3:30 AM

He belongs on the thread about actors with not much talent that totally lucked out by ending up on a very long running show.

by Anonymousreply 2March 4, 2023 3:33 AM

I know it's unlikely given their respective years active, but did he ever work with Eric Porter?

by Anonymousreply 3March 4, 2023 3:34 AM

[quote] He belongs on the thread about actors with not much talent that totally lucked out

Disagree. I saw him do a two character play with Uta Hagan and he held his own.

Someone posted this scene here a while ago and I think it shows how talented he is.

David Hyde Pierce is a great physical comedian

by Anonymousreply 5March 4, 2023 4:05 AM

R3 you're obsessed

by Anonymousreply 6March 4, 2023 4:05 AM

Always thought he was dorky cute.

He was hilarious on The Powers That Be with DL fave Holland Taylor.

I used to see him with his husband at an Italian restaurant in Los Feliz during Frasier. He was always polite and friendly.

by Anonymousreply 9March 4, 2023 4:15 AM

A lot of talented people don't get a long-running show with great running like Fraiser so in that respect, yes, DHP is lucky.

But he was perfectly cast as Fraiser's stuffier younger brother. He stole scenes without leaving fingerprints on them.

by Anonymousreply 10March 4, 2023 4:57 AM

Not to shabby with physical comedy either.

Only missing the Oscar from EGOT.

by Anonymousreply 12March 4, 2023 7:36 AM

He was never hawt.

by Anonymousreply 13March 4, 2023 8:05 AM

He a gay.

by Anonymousreply 14March 4, 2023 8:13 AM

He seems to be from an older generation altogether:

He can discuss classical music, theater, opera, literature, science, current events, sports, food, and wine.

He is gay, but he is not an "in-your-face-gay" like Ian McKellen or George Takei, who make it their predominant personality trait.

Hyde Pierce has always come across as practical, humble, and kind. He would be a great partner.

by Anonymousreply 15March 4, 2023 1:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 19March 4, 2023 3:40 PM

R18 I know. Without DHP and John Mahoney, it will not work.

I was lucky enough to see him in the revival of "Hello Dolly", though with Donna Murphy filling in for Bette Midler (my choice). He was absolutely hysterical in the role. He played off Murphy very well and did physical comedy to perfection - he couldn't have been any better in the role of Horace. They should've kept him on when Bernadette Peters took over Midler's part. Victor garber was OK in the part - he played it differently - but really couldn't match up to DHP's antics.

by Anonymousreply 25March 4, 2023 4:41 PM

This reads like an obituary. Did he die?

by Anonymousreply 26March 4, 2023 4:45 PM

R26 No, I was introducing him

by Anonymousreply 27March 4, 2023 4:49 PM

He's a comfort actor- if he is in anything, I will watch and smile the entire time.

by Anonymousreply 28March 4, 2023 4:50 PM

KG is currently bellowing about his "faith" lately and has a long history of tRumpism. Also drugs , bad choices in wives and really bad driving.

I think DHP and the rest wisely dodged a bullet passing on the Frazier re-boot. KG is a dumpster fire, best avoided.

by Anonymousreply 29March 4, 2023 4:56 PM

He might make a guest appearance on the new show, but he certainly doesn't need the money or work.

We are getting Bebe, and someone told me Harriet Harris is doing an episode.

by Anonymousreply 54March 28, 2023 3:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 55March 28, 2023 4:05 AM

I have a friend who did Curtains with him. and said he was an absolute joy to work with, treated everyone wonderfully, and he and his partner had everyone in the cast to their home outside the city for a gigantic party. He's a mensch.

by Anonymousreply 56March 28, 2023 4:09 AM

What sort of open relationship do they have? Play together or separately?

by Anonymousreply 57March 28, 2023 6:24 AM

1) He's a great actor! Terrific as Niles but also good in other things. And, a wonderful theater actor.

2) He was VERY cute/humpy in the mid 80s. Saw him in a couple plays at the Guthrie in Minneapolis. A furry little fox.

3) I think he was wise to avoid the Fraiser reboot.

by Anonymousreply 58March 28, 2023 7:56 AM

They don't have an open relationship. Not everyone is a WHORE.

by Anonymousreply 59March 28, 2023 8:43 AM

Hyde Pierce's career has spanned TV, film, and stage... he's worked with so many people, a bio or collected reflections could be fun, delicious and an interesting read.

If you do eight (8) shows a week, you're going to get to love, loathe, or just like your castmates. Here's who he spent days, weeks, months with for Spamalot: Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin, Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot, Michael McGrath, Christopher Sieber and Christian Borle in a handful of roles and Sara Ramirez in a Tony-winning turn as The Lady of the Lake.

by Anonymousreply 60March 28, 2023 9:40 AM

R54 He was the obstetrician

by Anonymousreply 61March 28, 2023 1:18 PM

[quote] I used to see him with his husband at an Italian restaurant in Los Feliz during Frasier.

I’m so disappointed you didn’t say you used to see him and his husband dining at “Le Cigare Volant”.

by Anonymousreply 63March 29, 2023 3:13 PM

He worked post-Frasier.

He didn't have the curse of not getting work following a sitcom.

by Anonymousreply 64March 30, 2023 1:32 PM

Bathhouse Betty!

[quote] I remember when there was a story about David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles in Frasier, going to bath houses in LA, and my mum saying, ‘That’s dirty. I don’t want to watch Frasier any more.’

by Anonymousreply 65March 30, 2023 2:24 PM

^ I saw that article and noticed the comment. He didn’t need to mention DHP by name. It was the first time I’d seen that rumour. Not that there’s anything wrong with it.

by Anonymousreply 66March 30, 2023 5:09 PM

R65/66 what is the rumor with DHP?

by Anonymousreply 67March 30, 2023 5:21 PM

That he frequented bathhouses, must have been during the run of Frasier?

by Anonymousreply 68March 30, 2023 5:23 PM

I was also surprised they left his name in the Leyland article, but they were probably unworried since the entire story was about her disconnection from reality. There's been a notable dearth of gossip about him over the years, even in the '90s, aside from his relationship with his husband.

by Anonymousreply 69March 30, 2023 5:24 PM

I think it was to show the stories of homophobia around in the 1990's.

DHP does not seem like the bathhouse type.

by Anonymousreply 70March 30, 2023 5:28 PM

I genuinely enjoy him as an actor. And he, like T.S. Eliot, has that hardcore Episcopalian look. Just a constant "smelling incense" face.

by Anonymousreply 71March 30, 2023 5:36 PM

Yeah the story doesn’t seem to fit.

by Anonymousreply 72March 30, 2023 5:36 PM

He would have read the story in the 1990s in an English newspaper.

I entirely believe that one of the tabloids could have published a photo of David Hyde Pierce walking to his car and coyly noted there was a bath house in the vicinity because that’s how they do homophobia.

by Anonymousreply 73March 31, 2023 3:33 AM

In 2009, DHP and Victoria Clark gave a sublime Cole Porter concert at the Lincoln Center American Songbook that should have been filmed. One of the best things I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 74March 31, 2023 4:33 AM

[quote]I have a friend who did Curtains with him. and said he was an absolute joy to work with, treated everyone wonderfully, and he and his partner had everyone in the cast to their home outside the city for a gigantic party. He's a mensch.

I'm not r56's friend (at least, not that I know of), but their post is an accurate representation of DHP. He and his hubby hosted the entire company in their home, and frequently held events at the theater or after the show.

Nice guy, very relatable.

by Anonymousreply 75March 31, 2023 6:34 AM

I'm glade to see he has put on a bit of weight and looks healthy again. He was looking downright skeletal for awhile.

by Anonymousreply 76March 31, 2023 2:49 PM

Isn't the reason DHP said no to the Frasier reboot was because he was already committed to the HBO series Julia?

by Anonymousreply 77March 31, 2023 2:55 PM

Julia has come and gone, the Frasier reboot is filming right now. He probably didn’t want to commit to the reboot, LA, and new writers at this point in career and at his age.

by Anonymousreply 78March 31, 2023 3:01 PM

Julia has not "come and gone," dear, they're doing a 2nd season which is shooting right now.

by Anonymousreply 79March 31, 2023 3:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 81March 31, 2023 3:21 PM

Well, dear, if he wasn't available, it was an easy (and legit) way to say no.

by Anonymousreply 82March 31, 2023 5:15 PM

[quote] I'm glade to see he has put on a bit of weight and looks healthy again. He was looking downright skeletal for awhile.

He was attached to the Masters of the Universe reboot.

by Anonymousreply 83March 31, 2023 5:32 PM

I posted earlier about seeing him a lot at an Italian restaurant (Palermo's) during the Frasier days with his husband, and he was adorable. Still had hair and a great body.

by Anonymousreply 84March 31, 2023 5:45 PM

On Broadway he was marvelous with Mark Rylance and Joanna Lumley in LA BETE.

by Anonymousreply 85March 31, 2023 7:42 PM

Saw him in The Heidi Chronicles on Broadway early in his career when he was David Pierce. He was absolutely adorable and hilarious. Love him.

by Anonymousreply 86March 31, 2023 7:52 PM

R86 Nice. I'm glad he added the Hyde too his name

by Anonymousreply 87March 31, 2023 9:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 88March 31, 2023 9:46 PM
