David Hyde Pierce
Born in upstate New York to middle class parents, he learn to play the organ at his hometown's Episcopal Church. He enrolled in Yale wanting to study classical piano, but graduated with a double major in English Literature and Theater.
Like most aspiring actors, he moved to New York City after graduation, where he took odd jobs such as selling ties and being a security guard. Soon, he would get his debut in television working alongside John Forsythe and Holland Taylor. Then came his big break: as the snobby and pretentious younger brother of Dr. Frasier Crane in the hilarious spin off of the show Cheers, where he received four Emmys.
Besides Frasier, he has a diverse in films: Little Man Tate, Sleepless in Seattle, The Addams Family Values, Wolf, Nixon, A Bug's Life, Isn't She Great, Wet Hot American Summer, Osmosis Jones, Full Frontal, Treasure Planet, Hellboy, and The Perfect Host.
Let's discuss the American actor David Hyde Pierce.

He belongs on the thread about actors with not much talent that totally lucked out by ending up on a very long running show.

I know it's unlikely given their respective years active, but did he ever work with Eric Porter?

Disagree. I saw him do a two character play with Uta Hagan and he held his own.
Someone posted this scene here a while ago and I think it shows how talented he is.

A lot of talented people don't get a long-running show with great running like Fraiser so in that respect, yes, DHP is lucky.
But he was perfectly cast as Fraiser's stuffier younger brother. He stole scenes without leaving fingerprints on them.

Not to shabby with physical comedy either.

He seems to be from an older generation altogether:
He can discuss classical music, theater, opera, literature, science, current events, sports, food, and wine.
He is gay, but he is not an "in-your-face-gay" like Ian McKellen or George Takei, who make it their predominant personality trait.
Hyde Pierce has always come across as practical, humble, and kind. He would be a great partner.

I was lucky enough to see him in the revival of "Hello Dolly", though with Donna Murphy filling in for Bette Midler (my choice). He was absolutely hysterical in the role. He played off Murphy very well and did physical comedy to perfection - he couldn't have been any better in the role of Horace. They should've kept him on when Bernadette Peters took over Midler's part. Victor garber was OK in the part - he played it differently - but really couldn't match up to DHP's antics.

KG is currently bellowing about his "faith" lately and has a long history of tRumpism. Also drugs , bad choices in wives and really bad driving.

1) He's a great actor! Terrific as Niles but also good in other things. And, a wonderful theater actor.
2) He was VERY cute/humpy in the mid 80s. Saw him in a couple plays at the Guthrie in Minneapolis. A furry little fox.

Hyde Pierce's career has spanned TV, film, and stage... he's worked with so many people, a bio or collected reflections could be fun, delicious and an interesting read.
If you do eight (8) shows a week, you're going to get to love, loathe, or just like your castmates. Here's who he spent days, weeks, months with for Spamalot: Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin, Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot, Michael McGrath, Christopher Sieber and Christian Borle in a handful of roles and Sara Ramirez in a Tony-winning turn as The Lady of the Lake.

I was also surprised they left his name in the Leyland article, but they were probably unworried since the entire story was about her disconnection from reality. There's been a notable dearth of gossip about him over the years, even in the '90s, aside from his relationship with his husband.

I think it was to show the stories of homophobia around in the 1990's.
DHP does not seem like the bathhouse type.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 30, 2023 5:36 PM

He would have read the story in the 1990s in an English newspaper.
I entirely believe that one of the tabloids could have published a photo of David Hyde Pierce walking to his car and coyly noted there was a bath house in the vicinity because that’s how they do homophobia.

I'm not r56's friend (at least, not that I know of), but their post is an accurate representation of DHP. He and his hubby hosted the entire company in their home, and frequently held events at the theater or after the show.
