Datalounge, tell me about Madrid!
Hola Chicos y Chicas,
I am about to visit Madrid for the first time tomorrow and will stay 4-5 days. I've been to Malaga, Granada, Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canaries but I've never been to Madrid before. What should I expect? What/who would you recommend I do? Where ought I to go?
Please help make my trip a delight! Nice replies only.
Gracias!

In Madrid all seems to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

It has some nice museums. Barring that all the places you’ve been to before this or nicer.

The Palace in Madrid is the most clinical, dead-feeling royal residence I've ever toured - more so than ones that are actual museums now. it's like it was stripped of everything that made it human. It was weird, especially as they still have a Royal family which uses it.
The Prado is unmatchable. It is FANTASTIC.

Wondeful beautiful city! See Royal Palace three big museums. Good food and restaurants but need a table reservation. Hot gay scene and good looking men. Parties go on to morning. Enjoy!

I was just there and I agree with R4. Do not skip the Prado unless you are a total philistine. I also enjoyed the Museum of Archaelogy. The Thyssen-Bornemisza was good, but not mindblowing. I didn't love the Reina Sofia.
The old quarters like La Latina and Las Letres are beautiful and atmospheric to walk around. Gran Via and some of the adjoining pedestrian streets have great shopping. Just be warned that the Plaza del Sol is a giant construction zone at the moment.

R4, the Royal family do not actually live in that palace. It’s used for official functions, offices and as museums
