Like you, OP, I'm a writer.
I've had a side career in boring administrative stuff, with a side journey in the HR/career field. Some of my writing has veered into academic writing about media, some about city planning and the like, but most of it has been journalism and feature stories, with a few key topics I pitch on (media and culture, religion, LGBT news, religion AND LGBTQ people, urban planning, technology, old people unwilling or unable to change or deal with change - a group to which I now belong).
I've had one poster in one of the threads I frequent recognize me, or we recognized each other. Hee hee!
I've had some health issues these last years, so I'm on here a bit more than I used to be.
Branching out into creative writing - trying to finish a one act play on a deadline......

R53, are you allowed to write “gay” when the people you are writing about are clearly gay? Or do you have to type “LGBTQ” no matter what?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 28, 2023 8:09 PM

R54 if it's about gay men then I've used gay men.
LGBT or LGBTQ has been the preferred usage for more community wide articles or topics.
It also depends sometimes on the outlet. Any outlet using AP Stylebook will expect the writer(s) to adhere to those guidelines.

Restaurant cook for the past 15 years, recently cut back to part-time after burning out during lockdown. We didn't close shop, just switched to takeaway and delivery, so I wound up working 60 hour weeks covering the shifts of co-workers with kids.
Every Australian got income support during lockdown, but it wasn't in addition to regular wages, so I was working my arse off for the same money everyone else got for sitting around at home making sourdough and watching Netflix. I try not to dwell on that, but it still stings a bit.
Once everything opened again we were busier than ever, and isolation had apparently made demanding, uncivil, entitled babies out of nearly everyone. That's when I finally cracked and had to cut back.
Still, I can't complain too much. Medical workers have been through far worse. I have no idea what to do next, but I'm getting by okay financially (my standards for comfort are pretty humble, thank fuck), and my overall well-being has improved since going part-time.

R139, how's business? I ask because I have a friend who works constantly and in big stuff. Was a regular on the Walking Dead when it was the number one show on tv. But when the pandemic hit, she had to apply for unemployment!! She was very open about it with her friends. She works non-stop, but at the start of the pandemic, everything she had in the pipeline ground to a halt. And she said after paying her manager, lawyer, and PR, she thought she had a relatively modest income. She's not a celebrity, but she's definitely been in a lot of things everyone here has seen. But she has kids and and a mortgage and bills just like everyone (and I was actually surprised she managed to get unemployment. I didn't realize that was a thing for out of work actors).

In all your years flying commercially, have you ever had a "god damn, that was close" moment? And by close, I mean the entire plane going down in a fiery mass of molten metal?
I don't know why since I've had no negative situations while flying, but I'm a very nervous flyer.

Full time singer-songwriter and interpreter of classic 60s-70s pop music. I’m pretty much Scott Thorson before he met Liberace.
I make Ed Sheeran sound like doggy doo but guess what? I HAVE NO RECORD DEAL. I’m also going by the reception I receive from my online virtual audiences, as I perform virtually on VR and on Twitch in the past; since I’m stuck at home with my toxic family for an undetermined amount of time these have been lifesaving options. Great amounts of online exposure, I’ve performed for at least 100,000 people since 2016.
Julian Casablancas almost signed me to his record label in 2016. I was 19 and didn’t know any songs by the Velvet Underground yet, which is how I lost that opportunity.

R149 and R149 I seriously LOVE what I do. Love it.
But, the road to being able to do it was crazy. Years in LA trying to break in. Oh, I had a degree from a college known for TV production and acting and stuff. But I moved out here with zero connections. That said, my early LA years were a blast. Lots of sex in mansions in Bev Hills, and sweet homes up in the Hollywood hills... I indulged when I was dead broke.
I would get amazing jobs, but then never was able to move up- everyone is so entrenched. My God, in 2019 I was in South Carolina delivering groceries for Instacart. Then one day I got a call. Greatest phone call of my life. With an offer that changed my life.
And YES I'm thrilled to have Mary Richards' title, of not exactly her job. I feel very very lucky to have it. I feel a degree of security since the show isn't going anywhere, and if it does, I think this tight knit group would bring me along on the next project.
I do NOT take it for granted, that's for dang sure.

I'm a semi-retired classical musician, was a principal member of several major symphony and opera orchestras across Asia and North America. I left the USA in the mid-90s and have resided abroad ever since. Now, I own and run my own music conservatory and am director of an international arts foundation that I established with my husband about 15 years ago. I still regularly perform a lot of chamber music and am an occasional guest soloist with orchestras.

BTW, this my longest tenured but only corporate job. All of my other jobs were in nonprofit and education. I avoided total poverty by working for a large foundation. Sometimes I hanker for more meaningful work and look into nonprofit jobs but I can't take the pay cut. I also remember that nonprofits can be shitty workplaces too. Just as much politics as the corporate world with low pay but highly titled people on power trips.

My heart genuinely breaks for people who never quite found their way in terms of what they wanted to do, or could never make it happen. Hell, it WAS me a few short years ago.
Life is not a fucking TV show where everything seems to work out for everyone eventually. People get left behind, and it isn't always of their making.

That’s where I taught for a longer-than-usual time. Knew I would miss the town and people, but had to go and not look back.
Now, my father has chosen to retire there, so I visit 2-3 times a year (not including PHX layovers). I don’t even recognize the place anymore. It’s all MAGA and flat-earthers. And sadly, my father fits right in.

I am an historian and teach at a small university. I love teaching, research, and writing. Of the three, I love teaching the most. It's challenging but rewarding when you see a young man or young woman get into the subject matter.
Students have changed over the years. It's been challenging since coming back from the lockdown...but still rewarding.
Yesterday, outside of a class I was about to teach, someone was playing a piano nearby. It was a lovely piece. I went to find out what it was and found a young woman at the keyboard. She told me it was her own piece and explained it. She apologized for disturbing the class. I told her she was far from disturbing, thanked her, and told her I looked forward to hearing her play again. Before we parted, she asked me my name. Later in the day I received an email from her thanking me for my interest in her music.
That email made my day. There are times when it is discouraging in a classroom when students are not engaged in material I've worked hard to prepare. This young woman (18-22) reminded me that there is talent, joy, originality, and sensitivity in every generation. The next time I despair of Gen Z, all I'll do is remind myself of her.

Classical pianist with many different jobs. Home music teacher (mostly junior high and high school). College instrumental music teacher. Perform with a professional orchestra as principle keyboard player. Have accompanied numerous famous musicians in concert. Have played many solo piano concertos with orchestras. I give solo recitals and chamber music recitals. Travel around adjudicating young pianists and judging competitions. Also worked with professional dance companies in NYC as a musician for a number of years. (Possibly my favorite job). Have also been chief rehearsal pianist for opera companies and musical theater. This all sounds like a lot, but musicians almost always have to cobble together a life. On the verge of retirement now, I have adequate resources to do that, (own my own home and a rental home, have other savings as well). but don't want to dive off until I have a clear picture in my mind what that would look like for me. (Would I still teach a little, perform a little? Or just quit everything cold turkey?)

Miserable, 80-hour/week Wall Street consultant until I just completely fried out and quit at 45. Miserable stressful life-sucking job - the only purpose was to make money to quit. For me. The straight people kept at it because they had a high maintenance lifestyle with kids and stay at home wife. So glad I saved and got out.
Not sure if it’s better to be really miserable for 25 years and save money - or content for 45.and work until 67. Everyone is different. Mi never found a job that I actually enjoyed doing. I LOVE doing nothing,

I'm a retired system engineer and project manager who worked for a big telecom company. I never figured out what I wanted to do so I just stumbled into and through my career. I finally realized in my 50's that I would have loved to cook for a living. I know it can be a bitch of a job because I worked in restaurants when I was in my 20's. But I think if I had realized my passion early on, my life would have had a different trajectory. But I'm not complaining. I did OK though it would have been nice to have enjoyed my profession instead of hating the one I was in for thirty years.

I am a baker in a wholesale ( factory ) bakery. I work the rack ovens. I prove, finish and bake all the yeasted buns and rolls. I have 4 double rack Revent ovens (shout here from Sydney, Australia to Revent Ovens in Somerset, New Jersey, an amazingly good piece of machinery still manufactured in the USA. ) and 2 single rack Zuchelli ovens. It's incredibly busy and unbelievably hot work but after many years I still enjoy my work. I will be 62 this year so I'm looking forward to my eventual retirement. Here in Sydney the pandemic resulted in heaps of qualified, experienced bakers quitting the industry. The upside for us oldies being we are in demand and consequently we'll looked after.
