His mum died three years ago of gallbladder cancer, which was not diagnosed, in spite of three examinations, until it was too late. She lived near Manchester, but he bought her the Cork house for her Irish holidays.

Folks in Ireland aren't as racist and xenophobic as they used to be, so he must feel out of place. He's such an insufferable cunt and blames everyone and everything but himself for it, so good riddance.

Even if it was just a place his mom visited a few times a year, I'm surprised so fussy a queen wouldn't have updated the interior, kept up with roof repairs or dealt with some of the structural issues.

R7- I like that ASS

I liked the house - it has charm & while it certainly needs work, it's not beyond hope.
Question about Irish homes, though this is not meant to be a criticism: while don't homes, even nice ones, seem to have much landscaping? Granted, this one actually has grass rather than a concrete slab that a lot of homes have, but there isn't the kind of flowers, bushes that you'd expect in a charming, upscale seaside home.

He's so up his own arse there's no room for your face, R7.
And it's not 1987 anymore. That arse is under multiple fat rolls. He got the aging he deserved.

Perhaps but at least it's not that musty old claptrap in Cork -- or up Morrissey's ass, like you.

I like it

Cobh is a pretty place, a location for many films and TV projects, but the house is definitely in need of an R1 and his deoldladying skills to sweep away the cheap finishes, the green carpet and salmon-ish damask walls and curtains, for example.

In this case, R10, it was a holiday house, so this one comes more or less maintenance free. You could have a gardener come a few times a year and tidy up a bit and not do much else. The English cottage look brimming over with flowers takes a good deal of effort to maintain, and the classic cottagey perennial garden seems a little out of favor at the moment by the spare and the 'practical' (weedy/reedy tall grasses, or a garden of courgettes and radishes and anything vaguely edible.)
Obviously there are no trees at the lawn that immediately surrounds the house to preserve the harbor views, though I would add something slender and vertical to help frame the views and create the feel of an enclosure. The dreary Cream-of-Mushroom-Soup paint color of the exterior would have to go. I would add a freestanding trellis extending about the height of the conservatories across the whole harbor elevation and plant them with wisteria or another decorative vine to add a green vertical element that could be mainatined easily not to interfere with the house itself -- again, some more green and better framing of the views from the house (and to the house from the harbor.)

So basically you're saying he didn't want to pay anyone to look after place, R14?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 1, 2023 9:58 AM |
Thanks for the thorough response R14; it just seems a shame to have a charming little house looking so grim
I also noted that there were several spots where the ceiling was cracked/bulging - always a bad sign, even in a nice house.

Cobh (known as Queenstown when all of Ireland was in the United Kingdom) was the Titanic's last stop before striking out into the Atlantic.
The Catholic Cathedral there recently hosted an installation of the Earth and one couple held their wedding there during the installation. Beautiful pictures.
It's pronounced Cove, by the way. "Bh" is pronounced "v", as in Siobhán.

My assumption is that he seemed like a gay man who shrieked “don’t label me!” his entire adult life because not because he’s trying to be a special snowflake (well, not entirely) but because he - well, I don’t want to use the word coward - because he wanted to avoid the drama of homophobia and was also too snooty to be categorised with Holly Johnson and Boy George.

The house is cute and just the right size for me. Needs work. As for decor it might do well not being overstuffed, not too elegant, and with cozy effects. I like the strong color choice and would continue with mod 60's colors. It would only be enjoyable with funds to hire local Irish color for weekly cleaning, gardening, repairs, etc. To me, Ireland is never about architecture and property, it's about time spent with socially charming people.

The colors of the Irish flag are prominent

It would be a fine place to live…..if Ireland had the climate of Marbella.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 25, 2023 5:38 PM |
Frequently Ireland's rain/sun is changing during the day, and the climate is better than much of England's. And Cove is mildish in the winter. 9° high / 5°low. 9°C is 48°F. One could grow a wonderful garden in that location.
