Do you judge people who don't have a driver's licence?

Why?

by Anonymousreply 58March 31, 2023 3:14 PM

Quit drinking, OP.

Please.

by Anonymousreply 1February 28, 2023 12:47 AM

OP--you need to know: we're even meaner to people who can't spell.

by Anonymousreply 2February 28, 2023 12:49 AM

R2 What did I spell wrong?

by Anonymousreply 3February 28, 2023 1:00 AM

Its spelled License

by Anonymousreply 4February 28, 2023 1:05 AM

In a FEW select cities, no. Everywhere else yes.

Everyone should know how to drive. There are a few American cities that you can get away without knowing, but not many.

by Anonymousreply 5February 28, 2023 1:13 AM

Totally. Helen Keller. She died in 1968. Cars had been around since the late 1800s. Bitch never even tried!

by Anonymousreply 6February 28, 2023 1:17 AM

I have read about a number of late millennials and early zoomers refusing to get them until their parents threatened to not pay for college. (My sister actually did that to my niece who waited until she was 18).

I'm older and don't get it. I was so desperate for a license because it meant freedom.

by Anonymousreply 7February 28, 2023 1:21 AM

^oh, and even though she got it-absolutely refuses to drive. She has a boyfriend with a car and he can safely assume she will never leave him because he's the only one who will drive her anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 8February 28, 2023 1:23 AM

No- I don’t think at age 69 I have given it a split second in my entire life. Really, why would I?

by Anonymousreply 9February 28, 2023 1:30 AM

OP is a virgin who can't drive and spell

by Anonymousreply 10February 28, 2023 1:30 AM

R4, only in America. In the other English-speaking countries the certificate is a licence (noun) and with it you are licensed (verb) to drive.

by Anonymousreply 11February 28, 2023 1:32 AM

Not if they're from NYC. And only NYC.

by Anonymousreply 12February 28, 2023 1:40 AM

R10 That was stellar! You know your movies.

by Anonymousreply 13February 28, 2023 2:08 AM

[quote] Its spelled License

Oh, triple dear.

by Anonymousreply 14February 28, 2023 2:15 AM

No I don't as long as they don't expect someone to drive them around all day long.

by Anonymousreply 15February 28, 2023 2:19 AM

Half of New York probably doesn't know how to drive.

by Anonymousreply 16February 28, 2023 2:20 AM

R16, AND ALL OF PENNSYLVANIA! 🤣

by Anonymousreply 17February 28, 2023 2:22 AM

"I have read about a number of late millennials and early zoomers refusing to get them until their parents threatened to not pay for college."

R7 No, you haven't.

by Anonymousreply 18February 28, 2023 2:22 AM

In the UK we have driving licences.

by Anonymousreply 19February 28, 2023 2:22 AM

There's a difference between not knowing how to drive and not having a license.

When I lived in Manhattan there were plenty of people who didn't have licenses anymore because they'd never use them. Everyone still knew how to drive.

by Anonymousreply 20February 28, 2023 2:24 AM

"I have read about a number of late millennials and early zoomers refusing to get them until their parents threatened to not pay for college. (My sister actually did that to my niece who waited until she was 18)."

DLers freak out about 16 or 17 year-olds transitioning......but judge kids that age who don't drive even though driving is one of the most dangerous things you can do weird. I wonder why the people who are so concerned with "protecting the children" want kids to drive.

I do judge them, Question Troll. It’s just a basic requirement for modern living. It’s like not having a breathing license.

by Anonymousreply 22February 28, 2023 2:41 AM

By the way, if anyone didn’t recognize her, OP is the Question Troll. She bombards DL with silly questions like this one.

by Anonymousreply 23February 28, 2023 2:43 AM

I've got a driving licence but haven't driven for over 2 years now.

by Anonymousreply 24February 28, 2023 2:50 AM

Yeah you can get away it in a mass transit hub like NYC but it's a necessity in places like LA.

by Anonymousreply 25February 28, 2023 2:57 AM

If someone doesn’t have a driving license what do they use for id?

by Anonymousreply 26February 28, 2023 3:13 AM

Passport

by Anonymousreply 27February 28, 2023 3:18 AM

OP, when was your license revoked? Was your license suspended because you were drinking and driving? Now, you’re drinking and typing!

by Anonymousreply 28February 28, 2023 3:25 AM

I judge everyone for everything.

Next question.

by Anonymousreply 29February 28, 2023 3:26 AM

R7 I'm a late millennial (1991) and I never encountered this

by Anonymousreply 30February 28, 2023 3:26 AM

I judge people who do not have the lisans for the playing of the music.

by Anonymousreply 31February 28, 2023 3:37 AM

R26. R27 is mistaken. The % of people without a passport is much, much higher. People who don’t know how to drive can get a non-DL ID…every state offers that option.

by Anonymousreply 32February 28, 2023 3:42 AM

One thing I really love about early films through film noir are the shots of actresses driving; in this pic it's a floor shifter, later it's fun to watch broads (in the finest sense) like Barbara Stanwyck shifting their column transmissions . . . of course, it was nothing out of the the ordinary for them, since automatics weren't nearly universal as they are now in this country. Nothing beats a close-up of high-heeled foot flooring the accelerator, stomping on the brakes, or clutching.

I began driving around the farm as soon as possible, and couldn't wait to obtain my first license--it's still a thrill & privilege to make discoveries here and abroad by driving! And yes, I do love driving a standard :)

by Anonymousreply 33February 28, 2023 3:52 AM

No OP I don't. I've lived long enough and known enough people to know that there are a variety of perfectly valid reasons why someone may not have a driver's license. No big whoop.

by Anonymousreply 34February 28, 2023 3:54 AM

I’ve known two women who didn’t drive. Both were married to subservient husbands and made it quite plain that they viewed themselves as being above criticism. To say I didn’t understand or ask about it doesn’t begin!

by Anonymousreply 35February 28, 2023 3:59 AM

I believe JLo does not have a license. That Dunkin ad with her pulling up in the drive-thru is some of her best acting ever.

by Anonymousreply 36February 28, 2023 4:25 AM

I wonder if there is a higher level of non drivers in the gay community compared to the general population?

by Anonymousreply 37March 1, 2023 12:00 AM

R36 If JLo doesn’t drive why did ARod buy her a Porsche?

by Anonymousreply 38March 1, 2023 12:26 AM

Looks like the Porsche broke her 25-year spell of not driving. “I’ve never even driven a car like that! I’ve never had a car like this – I’ve never driven a car period!” she exclaimed while admitting she was wondering “if I remember how to drive.”

by Anonymousreply 39March 1, 2023 12:43 AM

Do you?

by Anonymousreply 40March 31, 2023 2:31 AM

I lived in NYC until I was 22 and have lived in Chicago ever since. I've never had or needed a license. If I ever move somewhere where it's not easier to live without a car than with one, that would obviously change. I've always done just fine with mass transit and taxis/uber.

by Anonymousreply 41March 31, 2023 3:07 AM

I try not to think mean spirited things about anyone unless they're rude, aggressive, antisocial, or otherwise some kind of threat or danger to others. If you're nice enough and aren't disruptive in public, I love you.

by Anonymousreply 42March 31, 2023 3:10 AM

Always. It seems lazy not to get one.

by Anonymousreply 43March 31, 2023 3:20 AM

My license lapsed after college, at age 22, when I lived in Chicago. I didn’t get it replaced until years later, at age 39, when I lived in Boston. I got my first car at the same time that I got my license. Came right out of the gate with a brand new, $50,000 SRT Challenger, too. Heady days.

by Anonymousreply 44March 31, 2023 3:26 AM

R37 That would be an interesting surgery, given that gays tend to live in large urban environments more than the population in general.

by Anonymousreply 45March 31, 2023 3:36 AM

Survey*** I love auto type

by Anonymousreply 46March 31, 2023 3:36 AM

Absolutely not - quite apart from the fact that people may have valid medical reasons not to drive (epilepsy being one), I'd far rather that people who cant or dont want to, dont drive. There are already too many bad drivers on the road, why add more?

by Anonymousreply 47March 31, 2023 4:22 AM

Was hit by two cars so have issues with incoming traffic. And I have an eye injury.

by Anonymousreply 48March 31, 2023 4:36 AM

I don’t want to be judgmental. But I guess I do judge them. Some of them. If they truly don’t ever need to drive, then it’s fine.

But in my experience non-driving friends always end up in situations where their inability to drive leads them to inconvenience others.

I’m thinking of one friend in particular. Straight married couple. He drives. She doesn’t. He was incapacitated for a while. She offered me the use of their car during that time. Presented it as a huge favor to me. Reality was they needed someone to take the car off their hands since she wouldn’t be able to move the car on street cleaning days. I took the car even though it was more of a hassle than anything else. Parking in my neighborhood is a royal pain. They knew this. Plus, she has had to rely on him to do all the driving when they travel. Yeah, secretly I judge her for that.

I suppose some people live their lives legitimately never needing to drive. But I think it’s exceedingly rare.

I don’t have a car. But when I travel? To places outside of big cities? Of course I’m renting a car. How else would I get around?

And what if you’re with a friend who’s driving and he gets sick or tired or has an emergency? Or just wants to take a break from paying attention to the road? You just sit there like a lump and say, “0h, well”? Seems ridiculous to me. Any reasonable person would offer to take the wheel. Choosing not to learn to drive seems kind of passive aggressive.

by Anonymousreply 49March 31, 2023 10:08 AM

R36 JLo does have a license. She just doesn't like to drive because she considers herself a bad driver and almost got into a bad accident when driving tired. She can and does drive when she absolutely has to, but she's rich enough to employ a driver, so why not?

by Anonymousreply 50March 31, 2023 10:11 AM

R50 well I absolutely respect Jlo for having enough self knowledge and the humility to recognise she is a bad driver and avoid driving as much as possible. Good on her, I wish a lot more people took her lead. Unfortunately most of the worst drivers are examples of the Dunning Kruger effect - they actually think they are good drivers in the face of all the evidence otherwise

They’re kind of uncos

by Anonymousreply 52March 31, 2023 10:33 AM

I didn’t learn how until I was 30. I grew up in a city where cars were needed, but my family was too poor to afford a car. Of course, all the money we had to spend on buses added up, but what can you do?

Then, I lived in bigger cities where public transportation was fantastic and I had no need to drive. Still, I felt sense of insecurity.

Finally last year, when I moved to a smaller city again, I had enough. I also have a good job so I could afford driving lessons. So, thats what I did. I now drive and I love it.

by Anonymousreply 53March 31, 2023 10:44 AM

R51 Rumor has it J-Lo used to be a huge pothead when she was younger, which might have been a contributing factor for not wanting to drive. I still respect her for that - how many people just drive anyways and get DUIs and hurt people? If someone can afford to hire drivers and feels more comfortable with that, good for them.

by Anonymousreply 54March 31, 2023 10:46 AM

I do judge unlicensed drivers—I must, as I am a real live judge—that’s what they tell me in the other thread.

by Anonymousreply 55March 31, 2023 10:50 AM

I was stealing my parents' cars when I was 14—taught myself how to drive a stick that way! Couldn't wait for the day I got my driver's license.

by Anonymousreply 56March 31, 2023 10:55 AM

They present some problems:

Red lights, stop signs

I still see your face in the white cars, front yards

Can't drive past the places we used to go to

'Cause I still fucking love you, babe, ooh

You don't have a fucking car but you are judging people without a driver's license?

You are too dumb to realize that you ARE the joke in this whole scenario.
