Why would anyone want to become a teacher these days?

Something is seriously wrong with these kids.

I'm guessing this guy's dad screams at him like this every day.

Someone this young shouldn't be so angry.

But at least he still addresses the teacher as "Dr."

Lol.

The kid is obviously on drugs.

It almost seems like drama class but sadly not.

by Anonymousreply 2February 27, 2023 8:34 AM

His tantrum was actually kind of funny.

At least the worst he did was scream, and not physically assault anyone.

I actually laughed when he was pulling on the water faucet, and nothing happened. So he resorted to dumping trash on the floor.

He looked totally ridiculous, and even the girl recording the video was laughing at him, and kind of herded him out of the classroom.

Public education in most places needs to be shrunken as much as possible by expelling these students and promoting state support, including vouchers, for charter and religious schools and home schooling. It is mostly a failure. Teachers unions should be crushed and most the obligatory masters in education eliminated.

by Anonymousreply 4February 27, 2023 8:43 AM

I received three "specific health notifications" today for students in a college class that is all oral evaluation. One had a long list of things I MUST do and must NOT do when this student, who has "PTSD", has a severe panic attack when required to speak in class (announced everywhere as based on classroom communication and oral evaluation).

Written and signed by the student.

I was reminded of the DL Classic with Dr. Donna Beegle and her neuroatypical daughter who must have First Class Hot Meal or she gets scratchy.

r1 prescription. . . most kids are on something, legal or otherwise... and have been since they were knee high.. and quite often with schools pushing the recommendation.

But it's not uncommon sight.

Military is having similar problems with "kids" that go apeshit when they're touched or people get in their personal space. Like others, they've given them entitlements and come to find out it's never enough. Albeit, we saw that problem with universities as well... the last shred of reason around 2010. High schools went to shit in the late 90s. Around 1997... is when the mass walkouts started occurring, I believe. But talk shows that had once been human interest shows, had already been teen boot camps, babydaddies and jerry springer like for a few years.

r6 passive stance.. less anger than frustration, on the verge of tears, didn't want to be there nor exposed. He would have quivered like a bitch if the teacher got stern with him. He was acting out and testing the boundaries.. his main goal was disruption, secondary was begging for a reaction, discipline, to be dragged out of class - unaware he could have just walked out the door, depending on security, walked off campus probably... so, something took place before he walked into the room. He was already on edge and emotional.

so, another classmate that likely already knows his story thought it would be funny to record and twin magats are going to make his breakdown go viral, so they could push for conservative class reforms.

by Anonymousreply 8February 27, 2023 8:56 AM

on the other side, we could look at the problems with phones in the classroom... teen journalists and media personalities looking for celebrity, and wonder how many junior pornographers are in the school, too.

by Anonymousreply 9February 27, 2023 9:03 AM

When I was a kid, my parents had a friend who was a remedial English teacher. She never felt fear, and once she even challenged the kids to arm wrestle her and nobody was violent.

I’ve had 3 friends and also an auntie that had to quit being teachers in the last few years because the kids were violent. It has to be something that they are exposed to in modern society. Also the person that said they are a professor, I wish the disability offices on campus would put a stop to self diagnosis by students.

by Anonymousreply 10February 27, 2023 9:23 AM

r10 In our day, (mine, anyway), this wouldn't be considered "violent" but just acting up.

But in that day, bullying also meant something different and most kids learned to cope. . . whereas now, they have limited survival skills.

I'm guessing because of his immediate reaction to the professor, whatever happened before was with another authority figure... that should have found someone to take him for a walk (my, my, my day. there would have been students aides for that, if not other staff or even security) or have him wait it out in the nurses office where he could be observed until he calmed down. Even the possibility of being sent home - but loss of days, anymore, affects your GPA... and of course, there's the school stats, they have their incentives (closely tied to public funding) for keeping students too.

But it's possible if there were other staff involved, he's typically "normal" and having a bad day... thus they weren't aware it might blow up into an issue.

If one had to guess based on his symptoms and actions, then it's possible he's going through withdrawal... from what? it would match up with skipping more than one ritalin dose or other adhd medications, many anxiety medications too, among a number of others.

If he's not getting them via his GP, then it can be rather difficult to get renewals from a psych. national (honest, it's an international) shortage... (many more mental health professionals had quit. normal for newbies to quit within two years or less. those with ten years or more usually wait until retirement. On the other side, it's driving up salaries, so keep that in mind you broke bastards looking for a new gig. And we've been in a shortage for over a decade now. covid and the surrounding chaos was the last straw for many)

Since it's the DL, we can contrast with the other stories... the over sixteen mental case, which there were several problems in how they handled taking his gaming system away. . especially if they had any special education training. the before and after videos suggest they didn't.

If this kid had repeat episodes, back in the day, he would have been put in a SED class, sister to Sp.,Ed. for emotional disturbances (albeit, parents ashamed of their crotch spawn were afraid of their children being labeled as "disturbed" or being put into a "special" class. The classes were normal work and setup more like GATE (gifted and talented) programs, where most kids rather than going to multiple classes stayed in their home room or only had a few mainstream classes... and such rooms usually came equipped with a 'panic room'

but we end up with the same problems as the other story... most schools cut those kind of programs from gate to s/p/ed because of funding and it looks nice on brochure.

Why is DL overrun with conservative morons?

by Anonymousreply 16February 27, 2023 11:30 AM

[quote]In our day, (mine, anyway), this wouldn't be considered "violent" but just acting up.

I completely disagree. There was too much anger there. That wasn't just acting up.

Back in my day you knew if you "acted up" the whole system was going to come down on you - from the school up to and likely including your own parents.

by Anonymousreply 17February 27, 2023 11:33 AM

My friend is a middle school principal. The day after the return from 'winter break,' a crazed miss popularity student went nuts and somehow snuck in spray paint. Another girl supposedly had 'stolen' her same hair style/color, and mean girl snuck up and spray painted her IN THE FACE and hair so they would no longer look alike.

Friend says she deals with crazy shit every day and, as already know, the parents are the worst. My friend is quitting at the end of this school year.

by Anonymousreply 18February 27, 2023 11:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 19February 27, 2023 11:51 AM

This makes Blackboard Jungle look like a walk in the park. These kids are really nuts. Teachers aren't paid enough for this shit.

by Anonymousreply 20February 27, 2023 12:56 PM

Parents today always defend their kids, no matter how bad they are. Somehow, it's always the teacher's fault. "Not my sweet child!"...

by Anonymousreply 21February 27, 2023 12:59 PM

Amazing how fast things have deteriorated. In the 1990s, teaching was seen as a well-paid, well-respected, very safe and relatively easy white-collar job.

Nowadays it’s the equivalent level of stress and danger and status as being a prison warden.

You are never ever allowed when they are wrong or do something bad to say anything to them, correct them, and if you do, sister will hold a grudge against you for all eternity!

CRAZY!..

by Anonymousreply 25February 27, 2023 1:19 PM

It’s hard for me to watch because I taught science for 15 years and my classroom looked just like that. I was lucky and had nice kids, but left at the exact right time. I have a big job now and have a lot of help doing it, but sometimes dream that I am still a teacher and my students behave like that one in this video. It’s like a stress dream. I feel so bad for teachers managing this type of behavior, especially if their principals don’t help. Some say “let’s see…how could you have handled this situation differently? Hnnkay?”

by Anonymousreply 26February 27, 2023 1:22 PM

Probably, this teacher may have been a little afraid. Who could blame him? This kid was so out of bounds in his anger, and who knows....he could have a gun or knife. Kids don't respect teachers much anymore, as parents always side with their kid. Back in the stone age (60s/70s), I never saw a kid have this kind outburst and rage. They may mouth off a little, but the teacher put them back in their place. A healthy respect back then.

by Anonymousreply 27February 27, 2023 1:24 PM

As someone who has worked in the public school system, once you meet the parents of "problem" kids, you know why they are a problem. And the schools are basically powerless to do anything about it, and problem parents know it... And I agree with the headline of this post 100 percent.

Why would anyone want to be a teacher? Summer’s off. Being around kids “makes me feel young again”. Easy profession to get into. It’s rewarding to see kids finally “get it”.

And let’s face it. Quite a few sleep with as many horny teens as they want to until someone spills the beans.

by Anonymousreply 34February 27, 2023 2:51 PM

No one has mentioned the incident in Newport News VA on 1/6/23 where a disturbed six-year-old shot his teacher. This incident alone should precipitate a sea change in how education is perceived as a profession.

Why can't video cameras be installed in every classroom? Why aren't teachers' unions fighting for this?

by Anonymousreply 35February 27, 2023 3:01 PM

That blows my mind. When that six year old shot his teacher....and there were many warnings and red flags. People approached the administration about this kid. They just blew it off. I'm glad I'm not a kid today....and very glad I never had kids.

That's because people like her think that if you attack her kids, then you're attacking her.

They know full well that kids are a reflection of their parents. So if the kids are shit, then it's because their parents are shit.

by Anonymousreply 42February 27, 2023 5:23 PM

hat kid is not on drugs. He's too controlled.

He needs to be expelled from the school and placed on home schooling or zoom classes for the rest of his high school years. if that hurts his academic standing then too bad. they need to be setting examples to deter other similar behavior. If parents don't like it they can move to another school district and try again.

Zero tolerance has to be the policy.

This is something worth going on strike for. This behavior not only harms teachers but it harms students.

by Anonymousreply 43February 27, 2023 5:52 PM

Given the way the instructor behaved, this wasn't the first time this kid did this. He's probably doing an IEP and is medicated (or was and went off, not atypical for teens to mess with the way they take meds). Everyone in that room seemed like this was just another tweaking 'Tommy' episode, quick, get a video online! Not saying it was staged or rehearsed, but rather the norm.

by Anonymousreply 47February 27, 2023 7:06 PM

Kids today a sociopaths. I would be afraid of students catfishing me on grindr or alleging inappropriate behavior if I dared to give them a bad grade.

by Anonymousreply 48February 27, 2023 7:13 PM

Teachers are treated worse than animals. My friend who got lucky and left her job as an inner-city private school teacher (that paid ~$40k) for a lucrative job in the private sector looks back on her teaching experience with anger. She cannot believe she was almost on food stamps at one point. The amount of work she had to do over the weekend was insane. She was easily working 60-75 hours a week. And the craziest part is that she probably wouldn't have made that much more than $40k even if she stayed there for 10 more years and was the best teacher she could be. I think more and more teachers are realizing that they've been sold a fantasy about becoming a teacher by the media and teaching programs across the country. Hence, why so many are quitting. Countless teachers suffer from addiction issues. It's a high-stress job. And no, they don't just "get 3 months off" during the summer.

by Anonymousreply 49February 27, 2023 7:18 PM

Parents today are have a deep-seated fear about hurting their kid's self esteem to the point where they are opposed to criticizing them at all. And if someone else tries to criticize them, forget it. If these kids cannot be criticized at all, we will end up with a generation of narcissistic, thin-skinned morons.

by Anonymousreply 50February 27, 2023 7:20 PM

That should say "Parents today have...".

by Anonymousreply 51February 27, 2023 7:21 PM

R49 I would need more than three months to recover from the trauma of working as a school teacher or admin.

It sounds on a level with taking a job in the military or in psychiatric care.

by Anonymousreply 52February 27, 2023 7:21 PM

R52, it really is. I know quite a few teachers who got concussions from their time as teachers. If I am going to take that kind of abuse, I better be getting paid at least $125k.

A college friend who became a public school teacher left teaching about 8 years ago because he gets no support from the school administration or the parents from students who act like this. That is the primary reason why many public school systems have below bar education. No teacher worth their weight in salt would be willing to work under these circumstances.

I’m a teacher in the elementary system. Last year our principal allowed cell phones in the classroom. We had major problems with our grade 6 classes. We have a new principal this year whose rule is that cell phones remain in backpacks. This has eliminated much of the behaviour, certainly not all of it, but things are a lot better.

by Anonymousreply 75February 28, 2023 11:08 PM

Why do they need cellphones in the classroom? Every classroom?

The only one who needs a cellphone is the teacher. To call the police when students attack.

by Anonymousreply 76March 1, 2023 1:26 AM

What is Gideon Yapp up to these days?

by Anonymousreply 77March 1, 2023 7:07 PM

Elementary kids don't need phones at all, in the classroom or out of it. If you're worried about them being kidnapped or something, put one of those trackers in their pocket, like you put in your suitcase.

If they're sick or injured the school will call you, just as it always did, and then at least you know they're with a responsible adult till you arrive to collect them.

Can't parents just, y'know, be responsible for their small children?
