Had she not cooperate with the prosecution, she would have been a co-conspirator.

There was something off about every person in the Manson Clan. Anyone who spent more than ten minutes with Charlie and didn't want to get the hell out of there, was off.

[quote]Joan Didion bought the dress she wore when she testified.
At the Magnin-Hi shop at I. Magnin. As Joan wrote:
“Size 9 Petite,” her instructions read. “Mini but not extremely mini. In velvet if possible. Emerald green or gold. Or: A Mexican peasant-style dress, smocked or embroidered.” She needed a dress that morning because the district attorney, Vincent Bugliosi, had expressed doubts about the dress she had planned to wear, a long white homespun shift. “Long is for evening,” he had advised Linda.

From her wikipedia page:
[quote] In a September 2, 2009 live interview on CNN's Larry King Live, Kasabian recounted her memories of the murders at Sharon Tate's home. To help her maintain her now-quiet life, Kasabian wore a disguise provided by the program. She told Larry King during the interview that after the trial she had been in need of, but had never obtained, "psychological counseling", and that during the previous 12 years, she had been "on a path of healing and rehabilitation." When asked about the degree of remorse she felt for her participation in the crimes, Kasabian said she felt as though she took on all the guilt that "no one else [who was involved in the crimes] felt guilt for".
[quote] From the late 1980s, Kasabian lived in the Tacoma, Washington area, using the last name "Chiochios". In a 2016 Rolling Stone article on the current status of Manson Family members still living, it was said she had been "living in near poverty". In his 2016 book Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders, author Greg King recounted an October 1996 police raid by the Tacoma, Washington police department where Kasabian and her daughter, Quanu, had been arrested after discovering "rock cocaine and a large bundle of cash in a dresser drawer" along with a semi-automatic handgun and ammunition. According to King, Kasabian's daughter was tried and found guilty of possession of controlled substances and sentenced to serve time in a Washington state prison.
[quote]Kasabian died in Tacoma on January 21, at the age of 73.

“ When I first met Linda Kasabian in the summer of 1970 she was wearing her hair parted neatly in the middle, no makeup, Elizabeth Arden “Blue Grass” perfume, and the unpressed blue uniform issued to inmates at the Sybil Brand Institute for Women in Los Angeles. She was at Sybil Brand in protective custody, waiting out the time until she could testify about the murders of Sharon Tate Polanski, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, Voytek Frykowski, Steven Parent, and Rosemary and Leno LaBianca, and, with her lawyer, Gary Fleischman, I spent a number of evenings talking to her there. Of these evenings I remember mainly my dread at entering the prison, at leaving for even an hour the infinite possibilities I suddenly perceived in the summer twilight. I remember driving downtown on the Hollywood Freeway in Gary Fleischman’s Cadillac convertible with the top down. I remember watching a rabbit graze on the grass by the gate as Gary Fleischman signed the prison register. Each of the half-dozen doors that locked behind us as we entered Sybil Brand was a little death, and I would emerge after the interview like Persephone from the underworld, euphoric, elated. Once home I would have two drinks and make myself a hamburger and eat it ravenously.”

She was an odd one for sure.
She had only been with the Manson Family for about a month -- a newbie -- but Manson sent her out on two consecutive nights of murder. Something didn't add up there.

Linda Darlene Kasabian (née Drouin; June 21, 1949 – January 21, 2023) was a member of the Manson Family. Even though she was present at both the Tate and LaBianca murders, because she was the key witness in District Attorney Vincent Bugliosi's prosecution of Charles Manson and his followers for the 1969 killings, Kasabian received immunity.

Interesting that she lived her life in poverty, no doubt as some kind of pariah even though she could be called a pop culture icon (Joan Didion didn't just interview anyone). These days she'd be a social media star - still a pariah to some, but her movements would be followed everywhere & the gullible & stupid (Fox News types) would form a cult around her.

I suppose in the days before DNA evidence, her testimony was key to putting together the timeline of what happened. Plus, she reinforced that they were acting on Charlie's orders, not just randomly killing.
As yes, she does look like Michael Shannon with pigtails.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 28, 2023 6:35 PM |
Kasabian had a little girl back at the ranch which Manson gave to another female family member to take care of. Linda if she went against Manson would lose her child and was afraid of that. Her testimony put them all away. I always thought she was extremely brave to do that. The Manson family likely killed their own lawyer before Charlie decided to defend himself. The lawyer that was trying to get them off but they felt he didn't do as they wanted, which was probably some stupid thing they wanted and he ended up suspiciously dead.
Kasabian knew her life would be in danger and her child taken by the family. But she testified anyway.

What the fuck was Joan Didion, that fucking cold hearted cunt on? First she supports Kasabian, and then she supports the murderer of her niece. I believe she may have been an amoral mental twisted nasty cunt, but some other posters may have more information on why she was so hard and nasty...
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 1, 2023 1:07 AM |
Yea, I always suspected she was way more involved than Bugliosi wanted to admit. He needed her and he needed her to be a palatable, sympathetic witness and therefor seemingly credible.
But this happens often. Prosecutors made deals with the lesser devil to get the other devils. Criminal prosecution is not for the faint of heart or even the too idealistic.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 1, 2023 1:29 AM |
^ none of the Manson members ever said anything about her participating in the murders even after their convictions. She had a driver's license and drove the killers to the Tate and LaBianca residences but did not take part in the murders themselves and is said to have played “lookout” as members of the Manson cult carried out the murders of Tate as well as Leno and Rosemary Labianca.
