I think I’m too cynical for its benefits.
Would it be worth it to try it?
Convince me, yoga people!

If you have arthritis, it will really help. It's also relaxing.

Dean Pohlman, Man Flow Yoga.
Also, it makes you feel great.

When you start, forget about the meditation & zen part. Use it just as a means to gain flexibility and strength. The other stuff follows as you get into it.

Agree with R5. Learn the basic positions. Feel the relief and relaxation of "stretching" and then holding positions, not pushing your body, but holding a position and breathing. Nothing to judge or measure your practice; just doing something for your body.
You don't state your age - while yoga benefits any person of any age, older humans will have a life more open, peaceful, positive, active and engaged mentally if they do a minimal yoga routine daily. Arthritis, diminished circulation, reduced lung capacity, lower energy, blood/oxygen in the brain, all the struggles of the aging body are positively impacted by yoga.
I've done yoga for many decades, and I am now 72 and I do yoga at least once a day. Flexibility, positive attitude, breathing... all more conducive to a happy life. I can hike 15 miles, and I look forward to the future because yoga makes the present a positive, have, peaceful place.
Stretch and breathe... do it once and follow your body and heart.

R6 = reincarnation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Beware of instant enlightenment and awakening your Kundalini. If your outlook on life is screw everyone but me, me, me, fuck the Fraus - they will abandon me as soon as dick comes along for them, then I would stay away from the eastern practices. It will ravage your mind and body to the lowest depths of pain and suffering.

YES. I recommend Yoga for anyone who needs to relax. I am 61 years old=born in 1961
Last year, My personal; Doctor and Tailor told me I was slouching too much, affecting my body posture. Both of them told me...."YOGA". I told a beginner class(mixed group-men& women) That did not work out too well. So, I found another empty building with ample parking& larger empty hall that would be perfect for yoga. It has improved my posture& my slouching issue. My office manager, Herman takes the class too(lost 30 lbs.) Shaun(bf) takes the class too, We find it relaxing.

Yeah, get started with yoga for the physical benefits.
I don't do "yoga," but I do a ton of different simple stretches. After years of stretching / yoga, I started meditation.
The yoga & stretching supports the meditation. The meditation is what gave me a little bit of peace in my life.
It doesn't happen in the snap of your fingers. I've been doing meditation for years. I only do 6 minutes per day. I used to do more, then quit for a few months.

The Tantric idea is that gods are self-created, and you can mimic them by blowing yourself. Yoga exercises are intended to make you flexible enough to do that. It is an entire religion based on auto-fellatio, OP. What's to hate?

I’ve been to paradise but I’ve never done yoga.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 25, 2023 6:26 PM |
This will convince you. If not, just look at the video and beat off.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 2, 2023 1:01 PM |
Tried it several times over the years but it never worked for me.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 2, 2023 1:15 PM |
Look for power yoga and yoga pilates hybrid practices, they're very physically demanding and remember: alignment is the foundation of all asana practice.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 2, 2023 1:52 PM |
There are hundreds of free beginner-level videos you can try on YouTube. Just start with something shorter, maybe 20-30 minutes. That is all my attention span can usually handle. I wouldn't start with power yoga...it moves very fast, not good for those who don't know anything about alignment. For a beginner, try some basic hatha or gentle vinyasa flows first.

I’m intimidated by yoga women in Lululemon. They’re more flexible than men and give off a stuck up mean girl aura. I found a men’s yoga group (no, it wasn’t nude) to try and it was more comfortable, but that was like two weeks before COVID shut everything down and I haven’t tried again. I used to do yoga about 15 years ago and obviously was much younger and more limber and would like to again.

Maybe it'll prevent you from starting all your many stupid threads daily
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 2, 2023 9:03 PM |
I've never done yoga either, OP. Nor have I done pilates.
I have done a lot of pull-outies, though.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 2, 2023 9:09 PM |
If you’re too cynical, then perhaps it’s not for you, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 2, 2023 9:13 PM |
IDGAF if you practice it, or not.
But if you're at all athletic and want to stay healthy, it's great. The flexibility exercises keep you from getting hurt. 3x a week for half an hour is enough.

About 10 years ago, I was entering my fifties, and was having more and more aches and pains everywhere. Neck pain, back pain, and constant dull aching foot pain. So, I started a bit of yoga, for the back and neck pain. The yoga not only helped the back and neck pain, but the foot pain completely went away in a month or so! And I had no idea that yoga could help feet, so there was absolutely no Placebo Effect involved!
It turns out that stretching the achilles tendon can really help some kinds of foot pain, and a lot of yoga poses give the right tendons some good, steady, effective stretching. The standard Downward Facing Dog pose is fantastic for this, in addition to building core strength and balance.

Oh yes, the other practical benefit of yoga came when I broke my ankle in three places. So they took me to the hospital, and saw this fat old person and expected me to have trouble doing anything at all, but I'd been doing yoga on and off for the last ten years! So I when I was told that the swelling in my leg meant they might not be able to operate, thanks to yoga I had enough flexibility to hold my leg straight up in the air all night and reduce the swelling! And all that time spent bearing weight in strange ways, really helped me to adapt to a life in which I had to keep the broken leg from touching the ground for six weeks. I had enough strength, balance, and practice holding odd positions to speed my recovery and make the period of "no weight bearing" much easier to bear.
So I strongly recommend yoga to anyone 50 or above. Fewer aches and pains, more strength, flexibility, and balance. And if you ever do lose your balance and break something, like I did, your recovery will go more smoothly.

^Good advice R25; I've avoided yoga because my balance is bad (I've a got a slightly curved spine and one leg is slightly longer than the other) and like other posters, I'm kind of intimidated by the Lululemon yoga women crowd. I've tried pilates and while I think it's a good workout, it's boring as hell.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 3, 2023 10:08 AM |
Same r15. I envy people who take to it because they all rave about its benefits. I’ve tried it many times in my life and have never really gotten into it. I’ll probably try again just because at 56 things like flexibility really start to go.

OP, if you're tempted by the Lululomon Moms, or just don't want to spend time around them like a sane person, then either seek out a men's yoga class, a seniors yoga class, or just find your level of yoga instruction on Youtube.
Seriously, there's a bazillion yoga videos on youtube for free, it's a totally intimidation-free way to get started. The only drawback is that you won't get feedback from an instructor, but how much does a person really get in your average class.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 3, 2023 7:46 PM |
Oh FFS, I meant INTIMIDATED by the Lululemon moms!
Who the hell would be tempted by them. Fucking autocorrect.
