Do you think this is new? Because it’s not. Ever since I was a kid there have been crazy people yelling in stores, on street corners, at clouds. Now it’s a form of entertainment and that’s sick.

We had a guy like this when I moved into Yorkville in 1980s. He’d go into all the stores and start cursing. The cashiers and shopkeepers knew him and would say, “Come on John, you can’t do this here. Let’s go,” and they’d walk him out while he cursed and gesticulated. Before we knew his name my husband and I called him “Paul McCartney’s grandfather” because he dressed the same way as Paul’s grandfather in Hard Day’s Night and he was very clean.

They kept saying in Hard Day’s Night, “He’s a clean old man, isn’t he?” because the actor who played him also played Alf Steptoe, junkyard owner in Steptoe and Son and on that show he was always portrayed as being dirty. But John was very clean, always shaved, hair combed, wearing a suit and tie and a flat cap.

Everybody who lived there for any length of time knew him and just accepted that John was nuts. They only walked him out of a store when he went up to a new person and scared them.
