So? Whaddya think?

by Anonymousreply 134August 19, 2023 4:09 AM

I liked the trailer, but I love occult films in general.

by Anonymousreply 1February 23, 2023 8:05 PM

FAT.

FAAAAAAAAT!

by Anonymousreply 2February 23, 2023 8:08 PM

Russell has such a great voice. I’d watch just to hear the timbre of it.

by Anonymousreply 3February 23, 2023 8:10 PM

Calling it now - it will be a major flop. Why release it on April 14 ? Easter is April 9, so if you want to stir up some controversy with the Catholic Church and score free publicity, you release it during Lent (which started Wednesday). Dumb asses !

by Anonymousreply 4February 23, 2023 8:11 PM

Seriously, the devil would have more to fear from me than I would from it, but still, possession schlock, if done right, does manage to frighten me.

I think the thing about the original "The Exorcist", both the novel and movie. that frightened me is the contrast between the modern-day setting with all of our scientific knowledge and the ancient clash between evil and humankind.

by Anonymousreply 5February 23, 2023 8:12 PM

I like Russell Crowe, he's an asshole but I don't care. He's a great actor and I want to see him on the screen.

by Anonymousreply 6February 23, 2023 8:14 PM

That score is really effective.

You just know his boss the Pope is Boss Satan.

by Anonymousreply 7February 23, 2023 8:17 PM

Russell Crowe is always good. The atmosphere of this movie looks interesting.

by Anonymousreply 8February 23, 2023 8:17 PM

Crowe is doing B-movies now.

by Anonymousreply 9February 23, 2023 8:29 PM

Hell of a movie title.

I don't care if it sucks, I'm watching it.

by Anonymousreply 10February 23, 2023 8:30 PM

All great actors end up doing B-movies.

by Anonymousreply 11February 23, 2023 8:30 PM

If I compare Anthony Hopkin's Van Helsing accent in "Bram Stokers Dracula" to Crowe's accent here, I prefer Crowe's.

by Anonymousreply 12February 23, 2023 8:37 PM

Hopkins did his own possession film a few years ago. I liked that one too.

by Anonymousreply 13February 23, 2023 8:55 PM
The Pope's Exorcist Starring Russell Crowe

Must the whore of Babylon have a private exorcist?

Aren't the pretty frocks enough?

by Anonymousreply 14February 23, 2023 8:58 PM

Did Mel put him up to this?

by Anonymousreply 15February 23, 2023 9:01 PM

The Black Caftan is a perfect disguise for his new weight/girth

by Anonymousreply 16February 23, 2023 9:17 PM

I didn't think of that until you mentioned it, r16.

You're right.

It's a variation on Angelina Jolie only taking roles where she's behind heavy make-up - "Malificent" and "The Eternals" where she was shown in very CGI, flattering angles.

Tough to get old.

by Anonymousreply 17February 23, 2023 9:22 PM

Can't wait. Looks Awesome!

by Anonymousreply 18February 23, 2023 9:25 PM

This should come out in October, but then it would scream B movie schlock

by Anonymousreply 19February 23, 2023 9:33 PM

A quick breakdown of Russell Crowe’s character portrayals over the years:

Surly leading man

Surly leading man

Surly leading man

Surly leading man

Surly leading man

Surly leading man

Surly leading man

by Anonymousreply 20February 23, 2023 9:41 PM

lol, r20

by Anonymousreply 21February 23, 2023 10:09 PM

I think Russell Crowe's career has gotten very sad. That's what I think, OP.

by Anonymousreply 22February 23, 2023 11:16 PM

R9, now? That Unhinged movie was like Michael Madsen-level crap and that was 3 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 23February 23, 2023 11:41 PM

He wasn't surly in [italic]Virtuosity[/italic], just psycho, but in a fun way.

by Anonymousreply 24February 24, 2023 3:13 AM

He has/had a great face and a great ass but in between 🙀

by Anonymousreply 25February 26, 2023 6:14 PM

We've already seen it, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 26February 26, 2023 6:18 PM

Surprised that I actually want to see this. That was a great fucking trailer.

by Anonymousreply 27February 26, 2023 6:25 PM

Crowe's accent is pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 28February 26, 2023 6:26 PM

R27 can we have a review?

by Anonymousreply 29February 26, 2023 6:31 PM

In real life, Amorth thought that Harry Potter (and yoga, if I'm remembering correctly) were evil, so, uh, yeah - not exactly on the edge of my seat to watch a biopic about some hick priest giving exorcisms to schizophrenics. William Friedkin followed this guy around with a camera a few years ago for a doc; The Exorcist is one of my favorite films, and I was really eager to give that a watch until I read what a dumdum this priest was.

by Anonymousreply 30February 26, 2023 6:33 PM

Meh…interesting trailer but I don’t like that genre.

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2023 6:33 PM

Is it just the just the Catholics that get possessed or do Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. get in on the action?

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2023 6:47 PM

Did Russell inhale milkshakes between takes?

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2023 10:45 PM

I still want him to fuck me.

Abby did it better, you jive turkeys.

by Anonymousreply 36February 26, 2023 10:52 PM

[R33] I think southern Baptist’s get possessed as well, but it plays out in a very B-movie, direct to video, street bootleg kind of way. Catholic possessions excel with the theatrics and backstory.

by Anonymousreply 37February 26, 2023 10:55 PM

Anybody who thinks Russell Crowe has a good voice did not see Les Miserables.

by Anonymousreply 38February 26, 2023 10:57 PM

I hate iPhone self-correct. It keeps adding apostrophes instead of allowing words to be plural.

by Anonymousreply 39February 26, 2023 10:57 PM

Are there any nudie scenes?

by Anonymousreply 40March 1, 2023 12:28 PM

Could be good. Could be campy. Either way I'm in.

by Anonymousreply 41March 1, 2023 12:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 43March 1, 2023 12:58 PM

I am really looking forward to this one.

by Anonymousreply 44March 19, 2023 11:09 PM

Demon voice is dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 45March 19, 2023 11:22 PM

Crowe makes shitty movies.

by Anonymousreply 46March 19, 2023 11:23 PM
This should come out in October, but then it would scream B movie schlock

Another CGI crapfest. “The Exorcist” is coming out later this year. They can’t compete with that. Why does this say that it’s coming exclusively to movie theaters?

by Anonymousreply 47March 19, 2023 11:27 PM

And Jada Pinkett Smith

As Satan

by Anonymousreply 48March 19, 2023 11:30 PM

Is this a comedy?

by Anonymousreply 49March 19, 2023 11:43 PM

R20, no he went from surly leading man to bloated character actor

by Anonymousreply 50March 19, 2023 11:56 PM

I hope he does nudie exorcisms 😃

Does Russel show his cashew?

by Anonymousreply 53March 21, 2023 7:20 PM

This looks terrible. It's kind of sad to see Crowe reduced to this kind of material. He must have alienated everyone with his horrible behaviour.

by Anonymousreply 54April 14, 2023 1:34 AM
I think Russell Crowe's career has gotten very sad. That's what I think, OP.

Not really. He's a character actor now, since he's no longer a leading man type. He's still working. He still has a career and I imagine he still lives very well. This movie looks interesting. I'd go see it.

by Anonymousreply 55April 14, 2023 1:43 AM

Reminds me too much of one of my favourite films of all time....

by Anonymousreply 57April 14, 2023 2:23 AM

Ridiculous. Preposterous. Made to scare virginal teenagers if that's still a thing with jump scares but no intelligent grownup could really buy this utter nonsense. But there are enough stupid people who'll pay to see it.

A question. Did they really think that dubbing the kids with a grownup's voice would be effective as opposed to letting them use their own voices?

by Anonymousreply 58April 14, 2023 2:34 AM
Ridiculous. Preposterous. Made to scare virginal teenagers if that's still a thing with jump scares but no intelligent grownup could really buy this utter nonsense. But there are enough stupid people who'll pay to see it.

Boy, are you a stuck up, snooty twat. You're not nearly as smart as you think you are it painfully shows. I think the word "stupid" quite well applies to you.

by Anonymousreply 59April 14, 2023 2:50 AM

When the prestige rolls started to dry up Liam Neeson turned to the action route. It turned out to be a smart career move. Liam may have aged but he remains in decent shape and his movies do decent box office.

Russel Crowe does not have that option . He has become the new Steven Sagal. No one will find it believable to see him running down a city street or jumping from buliding to building or getting into a brawl with gang thugs.

by Anonymousreply 60April 14, 2023 3:16 AM
No one will find it believable to see him running down a city street or jumping from buliding to building or getting into a brawl with gang thugs.

He's a very good actor, so he would be quite believable in an action picture, you dumb cluck.

by Anonymousreply 61April 14, 2023 3:38 AM

No, he wouldn't be, r61.

Yes, Crowe is a good actor but in an action role, no amount of talent, clever cuts, editing, CGI, will divert from the fact that Crowe is old, fat and slow.

by Anonymousreply 62April 14, 2023 3:44 AM
Yes, Crowe is a good actor but in an action role, no amount of talent, clever cuts, editing, CGI, will divert from the fact that Crowe is old, fat and slow.

I don't think you know anything about acting, directing, cuts, editing, etc. No, you don't know shit about things like that.

by Anonymousreply 63April 14, 2023 5:01 AM

Alex Essoe is in this, and she picks her horror pretty carefully. She starred in Starry Eyes, one of my favorite Indy horror pics.

She was also in Midnight Mass recently, a miniseries.

I mean, her being in it is no guarantee it’s going to be amazing, but my hopes are high.

by Anonymousreply 64April 14, 2023 5:12 AM

I can't wait to see him in "Girdleator 2: The Fattening".

by Anonymousreply 65April 14, 2023 7:01 AM

Isn’t one of those actions movies a complete mortification of the flesh?

by Anonymousreply 66April 14, 2023 9:38 AM

He’s plumped up his bottom nicely

by Anonymousreply 67April 14, 2023 2:12 PM

I know that Nicholson’s lifelong behavior wouldn’t survive close scrutiny.

Still, I gotta admit, even though he was all ham in both “Hoffa” and “Terms of Endearment”, his presence is so compelling in both.

Beatty reeled him in in “Reds” but I find Nicholson more memorable than any other cast member.

by Anonymousreply 68April 14, 2023 2:30 PM

I'm actually smarter than I think, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 70April 14, 2023 2:38 PM

Ok so I'm not even a "horror" guy per se, but this looks fun to me. It looks good. I like the vibe and I'm curious already how it ends.

I think he looks amazing here, too. And I love his voice, and the accent. I was never lusting after RC in the before-times so it's not a loss to me that he's in his Orson Welles era. I think it makes him more compelling, if anything. It lets the acting take the spotlight as opposed to his looks, which I think he deserves. It might even be a relieve for the guy to finally get to just be an actor rather than have to also be a sex symbol. If your heart is not really in it, then micromanaging your appearance and especially your weight can get exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 71April 14, 2023 2:58 PM

Oops wrong thread

by Anonymousreply 72April 14, 2023 2:58 PM

R72 most of us wouldn’t even have noticed lol.

DL goes off on so many tangents, I just assumed someone mentioned Nicholson upthread.

by Anonymousreply 73April 14, 2023 3:33 PM

R4 "Calling it now - it will be a major flop" I call it a hit. Let's see who is proved correct!

Why? Because people will want to see it among all these superhero movies, is good timing as we haven't had one of these with a great actor in a while. Heck, even I might see it if I can find someone to see it with. Who's the director?

by Anonymousreply 74April 15, 2023 12:17 AM

My co-worker and her husband gave it a good review. They said it was scary and a fun time at the movies.

I might go to the theatre and see it.

by Anonymousreply 75April 15, 2023 12:20 AM

It's in Smell-O-Vision you can experience Russell's farts.

by Anonymousreply 76April 15, 2023 6:53 AM

Yeah just watched the trailer again. At night, it's pretty creepy. Give me something that isn't a superhero movie. Thank you Jesus, and I guess Satan too?! I'm totally going to see this.

by Anonymousreply 77April 15, 2023 7:01 AM

Russell Crowe is a no talent Nepo Baby with Herpes.

by Anonymousreply 78April 15, 2023 7:03 AM

He's still a sexy bear though this is one of those instances where I could do with a little less girth.

And speaking of girth, is he cut or uncut?

by Anonymousreply 79April 15, 2023 7:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 95April 16, 2023 4:08 AM

The NY Times gave it a good review. Excerpts:
It’s hard to pick the most surreal part of Julius Avery’s new horror film. It could be that the main character is based on the very real Rev. Gabriele Amorth, who used to be the Vatican’s chief exorcist (in a head-spinning twist, William Friedkin, the director of “The Exorcist,” once made a documentary about him). Or maybe it’s that Father Amorth is portrayed as an espresso-drinking, scooter-riding maverick by Russell Crowe in one of his most engaging performances in years.
“The Pope’s Exorcist” ends with a shameless suggestion that there is room for a sequel or even an entire series. It is not an unwelcome prospect.

I’m in.

Truly though, if you made the bad choice that I did and paid for a seat to watch “Thor Love and Thunder” or however the hell it’s punctuated, you can’t come away from it thinking that Crowe has another leading man action role in him.

The only role he now has in him are sweet roles, copious amounts of them.

by Anonymousreply 106April 16, 2023 3:18 PM

Oops stepped on my own line- sweet rolls

by Anonymousreply 114April 17, 2023 11:20 PM
So don't tell people not to jump to conclusions and then jump to the absolute worst (racist) conclusions. M'kay?

I'm not the one "jumping to conclusions." The ones doing that are the ones screaming "He was shot for being black! He was shot for ringing a doorbell!" All I'm saying is that there are a lot of things not yet known about this incident and offered some possible different scenarios from the one that has the old guy, guns blazing, put at least two bullets into some poor, poor little black kid who just rang the doorbell. Actually I think there's a lot more to this than just a rung doorbell.

And what's "racist" about surmising that the old guy might have dementia? Or that he and the guy might have exchanged words and an argument ensued? What's racist considering those possible scenarios?

My guess is that you think the old man was a racist because he's white. And THAT is indeed racist.

R116 is someone who's never had a friend, never had sex, never had even the remotest connection with another human being. How dreadful his life must be. He deserves pity, but will never get it because no one can overcome their hatred and disgust towards him. Poor bastard.

It was boring in the beginning. (WTF was up with that pig?) Gladiator rides around in a Vespa, sips double espressos, chugs whiskey, and says 'cuckoo ' to the sisters

Then later it gets batshit crazy and becomes a mix of Tomb Raider and the DaVinci code.

Then the demon 😈 ends like Terminator 2. ( I cannot self terminate)

The Spanish priest is a hottie though. He played by Costa Rican actor who was in Don't Breathe

I just watched this on my laptop (it's available for free on certain sites - you have to find it). I was quite surprised how engaging this is - saved by Crowe's performance.

Sure, the whole movie plays like a Cher video (burning crucifixes, candles everywhere, an old abbey, howling winds, rain, thunder, lightening, broken windows) and the character are very cliché, Still, worth watching for free.

BTW, I heard Nefarious is supposed to be the better film out of the two.

by Anonymousreply 120May 7, 2023 12:23 AM

I can finally watch it at home, but it’s $19.99 for rent on iTunes. No thanks. The wait continues.

by Anonymousreply 121May 7, 2023 3:14 AM

Google the title + streaming free. Some sites should come up.

by Anonymousreply 122May 7, 2023 3:16 AM

r120, that describes a bulk of music videos from the 80's and 90's.

by Anonymousreply 123May 7, 2023 3:28 AM

R123 True - I thought of Cher and Bonnie Tyler immediately. I went with Cher because she had the most videos in that setting.

by Anonymousreply 124May 7, 2023 3:33 AM

R119 Zovato is much chubbier in the movie. Especially in his face. Maybe Crowe asked for that in his contract ? No male can be slender and sexy ?

by Anonymousreply 125May 7, 2023 3:35 AM

Is there a lot of gratuitous tits & ass?

by Anonymousreply 126May 7, 2023 2:36 PM

It’s okay. I thought it lost a lot of steam in the second half and I was never scared. Someone above said that the kid’s voice is terrible and I agree. It was poorly executed. Even Wan’s The Nun and even Anthony Hopkins in The Rite were more menacing “horror” films to me. A masterpiece like Hereditary is in a completely different galaxy from this film; it made me explicitly remember the demon Paimon for the rest of my life.

by Anonymousreply 131August 19, 2023 2:19 AM

So the husband didn’t leave anything for the wife and kids…EXCEPT a giant gothic Spanish castle?!? And she packed up and went there with her kids and all the money they didn’t have to rehab it and sell it?!! She didn’t maybe think of reaching out and selling it prior? Or maybe the Vatican didn’t have to wait 500 years to make an offer on it?!! And the exorcist drives his Vespa back and forth between rural Spain and Rome? Because he’s riding the exact same vesta in both settings! OMG!
