Enjoy!

(One of) the last of the true originals I've seen his recent tours a couple of times. He's that perfect combination of classic iconoclast and perfectly aged renegade. His audience, sadly, now consists of many unfunny, attention-seeking idiots who have no clue as to the subtlety (I know that sounds weird... John Waters, subtle?) that was/is his trademark. I noticed similar reactions to recent David Sedaris events (I know, I know....). So many audience members today seem to want to compete (and do so deplorably) with the person onstage? They can't, and try, and you can just feel the performer's bones crumbling. Or maybe those are just my hypersensitive bones. Flame away!

I just watched Desperate Living and my fucking goodness, it was hilarious and amazingly subversive even more so by today's neo-Puritan standards. It's like Waters was just trying to take everything stupid about American society and mocking it and it worked.

I’ve always loved John Waters movies. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in my life.

I love that he cribbed the title from a local wimmin's publication.

I adore the scene where Liz Renay and her dull husband come home from dinner only to find the babysitter is throwing a wild drink and drugs party with her friends. Eventually Liz finds the sitter in bed nude with her boyfriend.

"Where's my baby?"

"I dunno! I'm TRIPPIN'!"

He’s a treasure and when I lived in Baltimore, he sat right in front of me at the Charles theatre once - I almost died! (Mary!)

Yes, but is he a [italic]National[/italic]treasure?

If so, I hope the nuclear launch codes are his birthday and his social security number.

I remember reading his book Shock Value on the subway and laughing out loud a lot; if people had read it over my shoulder and saw me giggling at him writing about things like his childhood practice of acting out car accidents they would have moved away from me quickly. Funnier than it sounds. I re-read that book so many times back then that it fell apart (I still have it though.)

I have an Odorama card he signed for me after one of his shows; a prized possession (yeah I know, MARY!)

He collected paintings of murderesses and fake meat. Love him!

I sat next to him on a flight. I had the same initial reaction, lulz.

My late husband once asked John Waters to autograph a box of Propecia for him. Mr. Walters thought that was a very funny and off beat request which, of course, made my husbands year. The guy before my husband had brought a VHS of Lust in the Dust which Waters refused to sign.

And I have the same vomit bag that he does!

I need to see Desperate Living. It's the only one of his early films I haven't seen, otherwise I am good up to and including Hairspray. The parts of Desperate Living I have seen are hilarious.

I watched Multiple Maniacs for the first time last weekend, and had some good laughs there too, though I did find it quite a long feeling film, like it was a 30 min idea put into a feature length, if you get me. But glad to have finally seen it and there are some typically hilarious Waters parts in it.

[italic]Mondo Trasho,[/italic] his first full-length movie from 1969. He says if he were to re-release it today, it would likely cost at least $1 million to secure all of the music rights.

A friend of a friend ran with his crowd in Baltimore. He related a story about JW tricking with an ex-con top who was so hung that JW had to go to the ER to be treated for an anal fissure. He told Pat Moran, his longtime BFF and casting director, about it and begged her to keep it to herself, but she immediately got on the phone and told everybody they knew.

R23 - thanks! I just looked and unfortunately it's not available to rent on YouTube here in my country, damn. I'd rather see a clear copy, but the Vimeo one may still be fine :)

by Anonymousreply 28February 24, 2023 10:51 PM

^ You might also check Prime Video

by Anonymousreply 29February 24, 2023 11:19 PM

Ta, R29, but likewise there. It's frustrating how many of movies are freely available some places and not in others.
