All her film acting career seemed to amount to was the movie "Goldengirl." I though for sure that was going to jumpstart her career, but after that nothing but an appearance on The Love Boat and a TV series that never made it past the pilot.
Why didn't Susan Anton become a bigger star?

She’s a good singer

I had her poster on my wall as a teen, but had no idea who she was.

She resembled Farrah a bit.

Because of Stop Susan Williams. It was awful.
[quote] As each chapter unfolded, Susan found herself in danger time and time again. She was nearly killed by a lion, crushed to death by a heard of stampeding elephants, devoured by piranha, crushed to death by a elevator, trapped underwater in a car and tossed over the side of a cliff in a motorcycle sidecar.

Because she wasn't much of a talent. Nice, but kind of a 2nd rate Farah or Suzanne Summers (already a low standard).
Better than Shelley Hack, though. And she could sing. Well, good enough to be in those Harrah's commercials that played non-stop within driving distance of Atlantic City in the mid-1980s.

Big mouth - small talent

There were about 4 or 5 different posters of her along with Farrah in the mail order catalogs I used to get.

I remember reading about her filming the movie Goldengirl in the Hollywood Reporter and that she was the star. I thought it was going to be some big think, but it turned out to be one of the most boring films ever made. I think I cought it on cable years later, but it was awful. She even sang the theme song and that was bad as well.

Wasn't she like 6'7"?

Pretty girl, she dated actor Dudley Moore for a long while, she towered over him. Upthread, I also had her red swimsuit poster on my wall, but Farrah was my #1 idol (I had over 20 Farrah posters, plus dozens of magazine photos all over my room, etc). I was young and still googley eyed for the '70s blondes, Susan Anton was one the, but just that one. I was a closeted gayling in middle school, but I appreciated a pretty girl. :-)

Because Merv Griffin liked boys better.

She should have replaced Farrah on "Charlie's Angels". She could kick some ass.

She performed fellatio to be noticed at all

That’s MISS Susan Anton to you!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 20, 2023 3:58 AM |
I think she was someone Hollywood didn’t know what to do with. She’s beautiful but not sexy. A good singer but not a great one. Someone you would think would be a big star because they had a lot going for them but no “it factor” that could push her into stardom.
She was 2nd runner up to miss America 1970 as Miss California. Very charming onstage then and has a lot of charisma back then. When Bert Parks asked her when the proper time for a young woman to be married was she said “heaven only knows “. People were surprised she didn’t give some in-depth answer to the question, but she was only 18 at the time and she answer seems pretty appropriate now.

Did her middle name begin with a B?
You could put her on a coin then!

She went out with Stallone a while. I remember a story Joan Rivers told about Anton. She said Anton had on white slacks onstage and she shit her pants while petforming . It seemed beyond the pale to repeat about someone on tv. Mean. I wonder why she told the story.

I tried to support her. As a young gayling I watched Golden girl as well as purchased the '45 of "Killin Time". Though it didn't seem to make a difference.

r8 she was not better than Shelley Hack. Shelley Hack was actually quite successful first as a recognizable supermodel then she was everywhere on Charlie's Angels. She went on to have roles in theatrical movies that didn't flop out. She was chosen to be the leading star in other network prime time series in the 80s (though they weren't ratings successes).

"Why didn't Susan Anton become a bigger star?"
Steroids weren't as readily available back then.
And when they tried the attack of the 50 ft. woman approach, you know--radiation?
Well, that's how we wound up with Bonnie Franklin.

She was a fucking giant! Scared the shit out of other actresses.

She played former teen tennis ace, Carling Bassett's mother in the film, Spring Fever (financed by Bassett's father), while yet another real-life teen tennis ace, Shawn Foltz played her rival in the film. Foltz' mother was portrayed by icon, Jessica Walter, at what was clearly a dry spot career-wise. Frank Converse portrayed Anton's love interest, a hard-hitting journalist in town to cover a junior girl tennis event (wtf?). Anton was a Vegas showgirl/aspiring singer who liked the company of men...a lot! After Bassett's character confronts Anton about her excessive whoring, Anton replies, 'Just because I'm your mom doesn't mean I stopped being woman.' Cut to the next scene of Bassett walking in on Anton and Converse showering together in the middle of the day. I might have watched this movie a LOT as a child.

She was just another bleached blonde fucktoy for men who gave her what little career she had. There are tons of these girls in Hollywood. They age out quickly and end up hooking or working as sales clerks on Rodeo Dr. which are jobs that suit their skills and education.

R23, I also got that 45 as a gayling.
It’s a solid song. She sounds like a less warm Rita Coolidge.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 20, 2023 5:59 PM |
She didn’t become a bigger star because she was never a big star to begin with.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 20, 2023 8:07 PM |
Because she bought her clothes at Sears.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 20, 2023 8:11 PM |
She was an awful singer, but still better than Cheryl Ladd or Lynda Carter.

Nobody ever believes me when I'm telling the truth. I guess it's the curse of being a devastatingly beautiful woman. The only woman who could possibly understand what I'm going through is Priscilla Presley... and Susan Anton. [beat] No, not Susan Anton.
