Wearing Perfume or Cologne Has Been Linked To Lower Socioeconomic Class

Are you stinky trashy person who wears this junk?

by Anonymousreply 219March 2, 2023 12:18 PM

Fuck off, peasant. You could never afford me.

by Anonymousreply 1February 19, 2023 4:21 PM

Wearing it judiciously is fine. BATHING in an obnoxiously loud scent does pair well with the great unwashed.

by Anonymousreply 2February 19, 2023 4:27 PM

I worked at Bergdorf Goodman where they had $5000 bespoke fragrances available for people who wanted something expressly made for them. Creed fragrances start at $385 and up. I am not necessarily saying because someone spends this type of money that they aren't from socio-economic lower class - considering someone women would buy a bag over spending it on their rent that month. BUT from what I witnessed, both the extremely wealthy and the middle level socio-economic class spent a lot of money on colognes. Tom Ford is not marketed to poor people, that is for sure. And it's not even marketed as aspirational. Some brands you don't even ever hear about UNLESS you have a shitload of money. Baccarat Rouge from Maison Francis Kurkdjian, anyone? I wear Creed Aventus sometimes, and someone literally walked up to me and said I smell like money, even though I barely have any. And home stagers who stage multi-million dollar homes will have Creed in the bathroom as representative of the type of person who would live there.

by Anonymousreply 3February 19, 2023 4:27 PM

In case anyone is interested... Baccarat Rouge

by Anonymousreply 4February 19, 2023 4:31 PM

Agreed.

Cologne coats booze sweat, sex, and second-shift sourness for many making $25 an hour. I’m surprised how many clerks work 60-80 hours per week.

It is a coating, however, and I’m thankful I work in a setting where K95 masks are still mandatory. There are some stinky motherfuckers making much more than that.

by Anonymousreply 5February 19, 2023 4:33 PM

I turn myself on when I wear Creed Aventus. It's probably the best cologne I have ever worn. And one spray will last all day long. That is how you know quality - how far a very little bit will go. It doesn't assault the person smelling it but feels more like it warms up the air around you with a smell that has different affects people - it turns some people on, makes others just happy to be around you. It's like witchcraft.

by Anonymousreply 6February 19, 2023 4:34 PM

I love the Creed banker smell. But tbh I rarely never to rarely wear cologne. If I do go to a gay bar sometimes I'll wear Kilian's Dark Lord - it smells like gasoline.

by Anonymousreply 7February 19, 2023 4:38 PM

A subtle hint on someone is fine - most people think they need to spray 3 big sprays or more. Repulsive.

by Anonymousreply 8February 19, 2023 4:40 PM

This freaks out DL Eldergays who grew up in an era when cologne was a big deal and who often brag about having "signature scents"

But for anyone under 40, cologne is in the same category as wife-beaters, gold chains, undercut hairstyles and big tattoos across the collarbone

by Anonymousreply 9February 19, 2023 4:45 PM

While of course there are very expensive colognes, the people who wear them tend to be lower class in my experience. Depending on where you live, wearing a heavy fragrance is seen as more of a social faux pas. In California, the last time I dated someone into fragrances was the aughts and he was from a midwestern small town. Fragrance free is the way to go or just a hint. The only people I see who wear heavy fragrance (and this is not indicative of socioeconomics) tend to be Arab or Middle Eastern men. I think fragrances are out. I could just imagine the fragrance department at Bergdorfs, in the winter, with the heat on - yikes.

by Anonymousreply 10February 19, 2023 4:48 PM

An online review for Creed Aventus says 'If you can’t afford Aventus, just use Klarna to make payments. Y’all are acting like this is hard to do'.

Also decants and eBay buys are a thing. You don't have to be rich for those either.

by Anonymousreply 11February 19, 2023 4:49 PM

Well when 3.4 ounces cost $425 the last thing you want to do is take a bath in it. R7 Killian has some great fragrances and their names are the best, like "Playing with the Devil." If you like good stuff check out Killian, Creed, Acqua di Parma, Tom Ford and Memo. Creed has about 70 fragrances and his been around longer the the United States - founded around 1760.

by Anonymousreply 12February 19, 2023 4:49 PM

Exactly what R9 said but much more succinctly.

by Anonymousreply 13February 19, 2023 4:49 PM

"In California, the last time I dated someone into fragrances was the aughts and he was from a midwestern small town."

Well I know at least Northern California is almost fascistic in their repulsion of anything that looks like it might be expensive. Meanwhile they are wearing a $3,000 Loro Piana sweater that looks like it's from Banana Republic.

And r13 maybe it's less of a socioeconomic thing as posited by the thread and more of a generational thing. Because I associate certain colognes with trashy people, but not colognes overall.

by Anonymousreply 14February 19, 2023 4:53 PM

R11, there are so many knockoffs of fragrances, I would hardly buy an expensive one that way. A friend of mine was an expert in making the fragrances, replicating them. That was his job. He whipped up Aventus and it did smell exactly like it to start. But unlike Aventus, it didn't change meld, with my body chemistry and just sat on top of it. And it lasted about an hour. I am not saying you have to buy Aventus, but I would just rather not wear it than wear something that might be a knock-off. And the knock-offs are all over Bay and other places.

by Anonymousreply 15February 19, 2023 4:56 PM

R9 and like everything, it will have a revival. Some scents are wonderful but I abhor some drugstore deodorants that smell like air fresheners. (It's maybe a German association.)

by Anonymousreply 16February 19, 2023 4:58 PM

People get so hung up on the cost of fragrances. Nobody cares. It's something that can't be seen like a great jacket or nice shoes and it's more invasive. The people I've known who were really into fragrance were typically overweight, but coveted luxury or designer items. Since they couldn't wear the clothing of Tom Ford or Chanel, they would douce themselves in the fragrance and then tell everyone the price.

by Anonymousreply 17February 19, 2023 5:00 PM

I went to high school in the 80s. Hence, I love cologne.

by Anonymousreply 18February 19, 2023 5:00 PM

I love perfume! Obviously too much can be obnoxious, and it's not a good idea to bathe in it for a first date or a job interview. Also I heard that certain scents compliment an individual's body odor differently. So the same perfume can smell good on one person, but bad on the other. But if I came back from work, or I'm going out to a concert or a night at the club, a little spritz helps me feel confident and ready to meet a hot guy. But yeah there are definitely times that a guy leaned over me, I smelled his perfume, and it made me want to grab him. I'd say wearing it correctly and appropriately is a sign of wealth and class. I can imagine that certain rich people don't wear it, like silicon valley hippies. I think perfume (the thing itself and the concept of spending money on it) is offensive to northern European/ protestant cultural types.

by Anonymousreply 19February 19, 2023 5:11 PM

R18 I am with you, almost. I went to high school in the 90s and love colognes. It is a generational thing. It was like a rite of passage. I remember watching my dad shave in the morning and when he was done he would apply cologne and then jokingly slap my cheeks with some. Early days like Coolwater, Fahrenheit, Jazz.

As I grew up my tase matured, and my worldview opened up through exposure to what makes colognes better than others. A lot of the department store colognes use a lot of artificial ingredients and alcohols that make them abrasive. And they all end up smelling the same with just traces of their original scent.

It's like wine, you either get into it or you don't. As my grandad used to say, "If you like that kinda thing, then that's the kinda thing you like." Wine is not my thing, but for me the right scent on a man can be intoxicating. Pheromones are a natural part of human sexuality and attraction. And finding a cologne that enhances your personal level attraction can be a fun sport. That's why,

[quote] It's something that can't be seen like a great jacket or nice shoes and it's more invasive.

is completely wrong r17. It's something people experience and associate with you - with smell, an olfactory experience, being the most evocative of human senses. And like clothes it can either be abrasive, invasive or attractive.

by Anonymousreply 20February 19, 2023 5:13 PM

R17 Also a Tom Ford outfit head to toe fresh off the runway is probably $5K+. But a bottle of tom ford is about $300. It's still a major expense, but it's a lot more achievable for people who love and identify with the brand.

by Anonymousreply 21February 19, 2023 5:16 PM

Although I must say, considering when I grew up, the smell of Drakkar Noir gets me rock hard because of all the high school boys who used to wear it.

by Anonymousreply 22February 19, 2023 5:17 PM

Having something hanging from the rear view mirror in your car is also linked to being of a lower socioeconomic class

by Anonymousreply 23February 19, 2023 5:18 PM

Ooh, R20, I had Jazz when it first came out - the old black & white bottle. I’d love to see if it smells like I remember. I can’t say I liked it on me, but it was very unique.

by Anonymousreply 24February 19, 2023 5:20 PM

Fair enough, R21. I had a chunky friend who spent all her money on Creed fragrances (she like the colognes) but couldn't wear the nice clothing she wanted to. Regardless, the fragrance conversation is very polarizing on the DL. You are either for or against. There isn't much middle ground and I do think it's more an eldergay thing.

by Anonymousreply 25February 19, 2023 5:21 PM

People dousing themselves in CK1 in the early 90s cured me of any affection for cologne I might have ever had.

by Anonymousreply 26February 19, 2023 5:23 PM

After 40 years, the green bottle of Polo still makes me recall my college frat-party days.

by Anonymousreply 27February 19, 2023 5:24 PM

The one trashy scent that I will admit to loving on the right guy is Aqua Di Gio. This reminds me of my first boyfriend in 2000 and it smelled so good on him. He had a huge cock and was gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 28February 19, 2023 5:26 PM

Perfume has always been a complete fraud.

The whole “it will mix with your body chemistry” is complete BS

by Anonymousreply 29February 19, 2023 5:26 PM

I tried wearing cologne but it always give me a headache

by Anonymousreply 30February 19, 2023 5:26 PM

The WORST are smokers, typically women, who try to cover it up with perfume. There is a saying, "if it smells like fish it's a tasty dish, if it smells like cologne, leave it alone". It's a metaphor that is applicable to multiple scenarios.

by Anonymousreply 31February 19, 2023 5:31 PM

I like the smell of soap and clean skin and, God yes, Arabs and Mexicans marinate in cologne. You can smell em a block away.

by Anonymousreply 32February 19, 2023 5:32 PM

"I like the smell of soap"

You do know that soap is basically perfuming your skin in much the same way cologne does? Each brand has a signature scent that we associate with it - Irish Spring, Dove. Unless you make your own from lye.

by Anonymousreply 33February 19, 2023 5:35 PM

R33 yes I know. Soap however is very unobtrusive and doesn't knock you over.

by Anonymousreply 34February 19, 2023 5:36 PM

Oh shush. Quit being a pissy queen. Perfume or Cologne (for mens) is a refreshing thing to slap on after a shower. Problem is most people use way too much. Men slap on aftershave lotion to close the pores after shaving. And women like to feel sexy, letting mens know she's ready to take it. It's all about comfort and feeling nice. Just because you don't like fragrance scent doesn't have to mean everyone else must feel the same stupid way. SNAP!

by Anonymousreply 35February 19, 2023 5:36 PM

You don't need lye to make soap.

by Anonymousreply 36February 19, 2023 5:37 PM

No one wants to smell you. It should be banned like smoking indoors. People have asthma and the shit in perfumes now is poisonous and cancerous and banned in every country outside of the US.

by Anonymousreply 37February 19, 2023 5:38 PM

R9, that's not true. You really think it's 80-year-old guys buying that Axe body spray

by Anonymousreply 38February 19, 2023 5:38 PM

R37, what country bans perfume? I don't know of any

by Anonymousreply 39February 19, 2023 5:39 PM

[quote] You do know that soap is basically perfuming your skin in much the same way cologne does? Each brand has a signature scent that we associate with it - Irish Spring, Dove.

Dove has sent-free. The original Dove bar has next to no scent.

by Anonymousreply 40February 19, 2023 5:39 PM

R39, the chemicals in AMERICAN perfumes are banned.

by Anonymousreply 41February 19, 2023 5:39 PM

[quote] Perfume or Cologne (for mens) is a refreshing thing to slap on after a shower. Problem is most people use way too much.

No, even a little bit is too much. It’s low class. You don’t need to smell. Colognes go back to whore houses.

by Anonymousreply 42February 19, 2023 5:40 PM

[quote] Men slap on aftershave lotion to close the pores after shaving.

This again speaks to the age gap. Who still uses after shave under the age of 45? Aftershave has alcohol in it, which is drying and aging to skin. Most men use a face lotion or no alcohol based toner if they have large pores.

by Anonymousreply 43February 19, 2023 5:41 PM

I enjoyed mixing wood scents because I smoked heavily. I’ve been vaping for a month and the scent is annoying and it sticks to wool.

I’m wondering if I’ll still enjoy my colognes as my nose clears.

by Anonymousreply 44February 19, 2023 5:42 PM

R43 is correct. People wore that shit before deodorants were a thing. Men didn’t start wearing it until the 60s. Cologne is unnecessary and rude.

by Anonymousreply 45February 19, 2023 5:44 PM

Every product you use has a scent, but perfumes are outdated? Sure... I don't care, I love the smells and I use them for myself.

If you are so sensitive perfumes upset you or make you sick, stick to adoption.

by Anonymousreply 46February 19, 2023 5:44 PM

I think the people who are constantly saying Colognes and Perfumes are obtrusive are really the one's revealing their Socioeconomic Class. Their experience of it sounds downright personal and dreadful. They must have grown up in households where their dad came down from the bathroom doused in Old Spice and proceed to beat their mom for burning the toast. Or they had a mom who really laid it on heavy before going out at night, trying to make ends meet.

by Anonymousreply 47February 19, 2023 5:45 PM

Stop revising history R42. Fragrance has been loved by royalty and the upper echelon for millenia around the world. It was always a luxury until mass production became the norm in the past 100-150 years. It’s only anemic, brittle white people who complain about perfume. They’re also the ones who can only eat bland food and have nervous breakdowns over a jalapeno or a mango.

by Anonymousreply 48February 19, 2023 5:45 PM

My guess is people who wear a lot of loud perfume or cologne also use those super strong scent crystals with their laundry.

That shit can stink up the whole neighborhood when their dryers vent to the outside.

by Anonymousreply 49February 19, 2023 5:46 PM

The French aristocracy wore perfume to cover their stink. I was watching some history show about life at Versailles during the "sun king's" reign. They said each day had a designated scent so that they the different scents would not clash and overwhelm people. Between the dog shit everywhere and people pissing and shitting in the corners (yes, those lords and ladies in their finery) it must have been an assault on the olfactory glands.

by Anonymousreply 50February 19, 2023 5:47 PM

[quote] Fragrance has been loved by royalty and the upper echelon for millenia around the world.

I will give you this. Harry recounted in 'Spare' that Charles douses himself in his signature scent so much so that he could smell is dad a mile away and they could leave a cloying after effect once he left.

by Anonymousreply 51February 19, 2023 5:48 PM

[quote]Wearing Perfume or Cologne Has Been Linked To Lower Socioeconomic Class

Link please.

by Anonymousreply 52February 19, 2023 5:48 PM

R48 you don't know a lot of white people do you?

by Anonymousreply 53February 19, 2023 5:49 PM

I love people like R42 who feel they live in a scent free world. Every single product you use on your body or washing your clothes in, brush your teeth with has a scent. You might not use a cologne BUT you aren't living in a smell free, scent free world, by far.

And colognes and perfumes go way back to before the Ancient Egyptians.

by Anonymousreply 54February 19, 2023 5:49 PM

Years ago I went to a hotel room with a guy who seemed friendly, but awkward. He might have been straight, bi, or inexperienced. He dressed like he was going to church. He wore lots of jewelry. I smelled heavy cologne (the amount applied is always in inverse proportion to its quality), but figured I’d get used to it. Then I knelt down and opened his pants. He had sprayed a quarter of a bottle of cologne all over his cock and balls. Dear god, why?! I tried to do my cocksucker’s best, but it was like a gasoline lollipop. My eyes were burning and it tasted like poison, I was gagging. I had to call it quits. Never experienced that before or since.

by Anonymousreply 55February 19, 2023 5:51 PM

Almost all movie stars and politicians wear fragrance too.

People will say, I like my smell... yet they are saying 10 layers of scented products. Deodorant, hairspray, soap, washing detergent, all those expensive skin care products. You don't like your natural smell. You like the smell of those products on you, minus cologne. Trust me, you don't even really know what "YOU" smells like, other than stinking.

by Anonymousreply 57February 19, 2023 5:52 PM

Eldergays triggered, as predicted.

[quote] You really think it's 80-year-old guys buying that Axe body spray

No, it's working class teens

by Anonymousreply 58February 19, 2023 5:52 PM

I don't understand wearing a fragrance just because it's from X designer. It either smells pleasant to you or not.

I use the fragrance that R1 posted: L'Eau D'Issey. Very fresh and light. Unfortunately, it wears off quickly. I doesn't come in a parfum, which would last longer.

by Anonymousreply 59February 19, 2023 5:54 PM

Those of you who still wear cologne - do you use unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant?

If not, don't those scents mess with the scent of your cologne?

by Anonymousreply 60February 19, 2023 5:54 PM

Since this IS a socioeconomic discussion only, Rihanna who is a billionaire has been voted the best smelling celebrity because of the scent that she wears. There was a video somewhere candidly asking celebs who is the best smelling celeb, and they said over and over again Rihanna smell the best.

R2 and the rest of the defensive stinkers here simply stink.

And of course it's low SES people who tend to stink the worst with their accumulations of stench products, from the top of their never-cleaned fake hair down to their Dr. Scholl's heavily mentholated anti-fungus cream.

by Anonymousreply 62February 19, 2023 6:00 PM

R60, I use unscented soap and a citrus-scented spray deodorant made by Weleda. The citrus scent is very light and unobtrusive.

by Anonymousreply 63February 19, 2023 6:03 PM

R60, I probably have some different scents going on, but I don't think it's a major clash.

by Anonymousreply 64February 19, 2023 6:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 67February 19, 2023 6:14 PM

When I visited London I was strolling around, doing touristy things, and went to some mall that had Victorian era building on each side and a glass roof. It’s a notable structure but I can’t remember the name.

There was a lovely old perfume shop there. I asked what their bestselling scent was, and it was something made for Queen Victoria. I believe it had a Lily of the valley scent.

It was delicious.

by Anonymousreply 78February 19, 2023 7:11 PM

A discreet dab, spray, or slap is not the same as dousing yourself, or multiple applications. I often smell women passing me by, or men, who utterly reek. Sometimes it's quite hilarious that they are either blissfully unaware of this, or just don't care and wish to reek. Generally the perfume smells cheap and the cologne smells to me like Brut. My father wore that and it was potent.

by Anonymousreply 79February 19, 2023 7:14 PM

I generally loathe cologne & perfume, but I can smell good if just lightly dabbed, here & there.

by Anonymousreply 85February 19, 2023 9:25 PM

Many of the cheaper ones do, R85

by Anonymousreply 86February 19, 2023 9:30 PM

People often criticize orange blossom fragrances for smelling soapy, R85, although I haven't experienced that. To me orange blossom has a very heady and complex scent. It is however a 'clean' white floral as opposed to jasmine or tuberose which to me often have a strange animalistic note. Orange blossom can smell very sharp and green.

by Anonymousreply 87February 19, 2023 9:36 PM

My deodorant and shampoo have a slight “clean” scent but that’s it.

Unscented for everything else. I accidentally bought some scented clothes detergent and it was vile. Ended up giving it away.

R74 back when my straight homophobe Boomer father worked in sales, he wore the 80s Green Polo for fucking years. And it stank on him, and in general. He also had the most disgusting and unflattering moustache that he waxed with this weird-smelling balm.

Nowadays, he's clean-shaven, out of the ratrace, and doesn't use cologne anymore, thank fuck. Then again, he's also been a weird depressed reclusive deadbeat scrabbling for pennies ever since, so.

I own a business and cringe anytime a man comes in wearing cologne. It is usually elderly white men or middle-aged black men. It is repulsive so I never wear it. That being said, I came across this commercial and liked it so much I watched it three times.

[quote] But as we get older the truth is, we stink. It's nice to have a signature scent that isn't reminiscent of encroaching death.

I don't think older age --> stink. Possibly, some older people become complacent about hygiene and housekeeping. Bad smells in house permeate clothing, etc.

If you're keeping up with hygiene, I don't think there should be any particular bad smell or "old man" / "old lady" smell.

Also, sorry to sound lecturous, but you can't hide bad body odors with perfumes.

That said, I hope you find a scent that you like.

My ex wore Derby by Guerlain (I think the fragrance has since been discontinued). What was interesting was that it smelled so incredibly sexy on him but absolutely terrible on me - at least I thought so. In fact, I couldn't stand the cologne on me, I had to wash it off. But on him, well, that was another story.

by Anonymousreply 135February 21, 2023 9:37 PM

I have one very small bottle of what is most likely a knockoff of Aveda's Eros (because I think they discontinued it like 20 years ago) that I got on eBay and it smells exactly like the original. And I've only ever worn it twice, sparingly, and on a date.

by Anonymousreply 136February 21, 2023 9:48 PM

Even a tiny amount of sweating will drastically strengthen the fragrance you wear. Tell your male friends. Less is best. See, they put on a decnt amount, but then they sweat while getting dressed. By the time they leave, they smell like a brothel. Put cologne on LAST. Only put it on after you've done everything but shut and locked your door. Body sprays in lieu of colognes are a better choice when you know you'll be seating a lot, like from dancing.

Living in a house with VINYL or ALUMINUM siding has been linked to

Lower Socioeconomic Class

by Anonymousreply 142February 22, 2023 3:22 AM

Arrogant middle class whites from Ameristan who think they are upper middle class because they live 5 minutes away from a golf course and they have a timeshare in Orlando will always hate perfume. Not knowing that almost every successful musician, actor, politician, etc., wears perfume. And they make their fame and fortune by charming strangers, building relationships with colleagues, going to parties, etc. They curate a scent the same way they curate a brand, image, or sense of style. If the right perfume is chosen, and it's worn correctly, it can be intoxicating. Campaign managers spend hours deciding which perfume to put on a candidate and their partner, because it's plays a big part in how that person is experienced. If you are sensitive to perfume, that's fine. But everyone saying it's associated with being low class is ignorant. It's also prejudiced to say it's trashy and complain about Arabs and Hispanics using it at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 143February 22, 2023 3:49 AM

A lot of Indian and Arab guys who don’t wear deodorant wear very heavy cologne. They seem to think it masks the Bo

by Anonymousreply 144February 22, 2023 3:57 AM

Well those are cultures in which the people 1) sweat more 2) warmer climates 3) fragrant and garlicky food affects their body odor. Having perfume that is strong and noticeable was a status thing, so mix everything together, and you have a reason why they wear so much. The more time they spend in America, the more they will adjust to fit our practices when it comes to fragrance.

R95 The original green Polo also had a lot of Oak Moss and Irish Moss. As the EU has banned both in fragrance (not certain why), I wonder what the perfumers are using to substitute?

I've recently been using the Polo green deo stick, and it's really long-lasting, and nicely herbacious, yet earthy as well. My partner really likes it, especially when he lays his head on me. It isn't too overpowering, and he says it smells nothing like the cologne. I do definitely pick up on the Patchouli; probably more than with the actual cologne. It is very sexy.

Confession: I never go more than a few days without a shower, but as I'm not a very active person and often forget or can't face it due to depression. honestly there are days I don't. Also, I live in communal housing with four other adults sharing the same bathroom, so there are also days that I just haven't time to wait for it to be free (yes, I know, 'use the gym/pool/work shower, stinky whore').

Still, I don't layer on perfume and bodyspray to cover the fact I've not showered, that only makes matters worse. Just triple up on the deodorant, put on clean clothes from the drawer or the washer, and try not to get sweaty--usually it's fine and I don't smell at all.

by Anonymousreply 150February 22, 2023 2:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 159February 22, 2023 4:36 PM

I love fragrance. I am on the higher rungs of the socioeconomic ladder but it's not where I started. Does my love of fragrance betray my humble beginnings? When people compliment me on my choice of fragrance are they really mocking me?

by Anonymousreply 160February 22, 2023 5:26 PM

The article @R103 saddens me deeply.

90% of the classic frags (pre-2005 or so) bear little resemblance to their original scent. Whether one agrees with its mission or not, IFRA has destroyed classic perfumery. Everything has been re-formulated to within an inch of their lives. People born after 1995 have little idea what high-quality fragrances used to be.

Only the names are unchanged.

by Anonymousreply 161February 22, 2023 5:31 PM

R150, I would gently urge you to get into that shower once per day. You can't just double-up on deodorant and "try not to get sweaty." That's no way to live, long-term.

You say you're struggling with depression and that's understandable.

If you're putting on fresh clothing, that indicates that you have the energy to do laundry. Why not just take a shower, also?

There was always a certain kind of woman you'd find drenched in cologne. Cheap, heavily made up, sexy dress, long red nails, big jewelry, even in the office. Very uncomfortable to be around. Then the men in open shirts and gold chains, greasy haired gangster types, big watches and heavy scents.

I don't wear cologne, scents bother me, although sometimes I enjoy them on people if the scent is subtle.

She literally is overwhelmed when someone hasn't;t wiped thoroughly which made me question how clean my hole is. Since she shared this, I too can smell when someone hasn't fully wiped or when a women is on the rag - a sweet, fishy smell tinged with a talcum alkaline smell. London, Paris, Geneva, Barcelona, the Côte d'Azur, Rome - you smell perfume and cologne everywhere. I'm a professor in a Swiss university. Both sexes of students wear fragrance, and the dudes more than the women. And the guys smell stronger because popular mens fragrances are loud, these days, filled with ambroxan and iso E Super.

It's not just the working class kids but yeah they love it more and spray it heavy. If you think a 2nd generation serb/croat or portuguese origin 20yo Swiss stud, smart as a whip, dosed in his fragrance, is offensive, JUST KILL YOURSELF NOW.

Three-quarters of the toxic chemicals detected in a test of 140 products came from fragrance, reported a 2018 BCPP study of personal care and cleaning brands. The chemicals identified were linked to chronic health issues, including cancer.

The problem isn't colognes or perfumes, it's low quality ones. Expensive or cheap doesn't matter, the original China Rain fragrance is cheap but still smells fresh and lovely because it's not synthetic.

And apparently old people smell is a real thing, I looked it up. It's not a hygiene issue, it's something to do with the breakdown of fatty acids as the skin ages.

I know from my parents that cologne was not considered all that low class back in the 70s and 80s.

Curious why it fell out of favor and developed that reputation with Millennials and Gen Z. I googled, but nothing came up. I suspect perfume makers have done some research on it, but not for public consumption.

R193 another point related to this: so many cleaning and hygiene products these days contain synthetic scents, that they've become associated with those products rather than with luxe cosmetics. So people smell lemon these days and think of bathroom cleaner, or smell pine and think of floor wash, or smell cherry blossom and think of hand soap or deodorant room spray. So, perfume now smells less like natural or like a desirable adornment to people, and more like something utilitarian associated with un/cleanliness.

I don't know about that R199

Weren't "cleaning and hygiene products" all scented back in the 70s and 80s?

If anything, the trend on those products has been to more natural scents--companies like 7th Generation or Mrs. Meyers.

R180 you sound like my husband. He is a professor as well based in Rome. And each time he comes home he is talking about his students and his crushes. He never crosses a line, but says a combination of how the boys look, dress and how smart and engaged they are in what he is teaching is quite intoxicating. Makes him horny as fuck. I'm like - I guess so and so his getting an A.

[quote] Popular mens’ fragrances are loud, these days, filled with ambroxan and iso E Super.

Nothing quite so vile in commercial fragrance. Except perhaps an overpowering Oud or Patchouli, which could easily clear a large room like a lecture hall.

Sounds like he's crossing an ethical line if his crushes are getting As because professor wants to fuck them.

Cologne and yes even doedourant has been OUT for years now.

On the subject of showering/BO: being young, gorgeous and arty I can get away with not showering for a few days and no one noticing/caring. In fact, my armpit biome would seem to equalise and have zero scent even after days without a shower (this was confirmed by other people - I didn’t just get used to my own stink.) But there were times when I would go from this state to then having a shower, washing my pits with soap and developing heinous BO within minutes. There seems to be some link between soap and BO.

This all went out the window though at some point last year when, drunk, I rubbed armpits with a bunch of my friends. I’ve stunk since.

R211 stop blaming your friends just admit you sometimes stink.

What else is "out" in the USA? Socialised medicine. Public decorum and civility. Fragrance. What else?

Ladies wearing hats and gloves on airplanes R213

I hear that even the stewardesses are allowed to wear trousers!!!

by Anonymousreply 214March 1, 2023 11:47 AM

R214 Yes that's so particular to the US. (Not.)

by Anonymousreply 215March 1, 2023 4:56 PM

R215 = satire few zone.

by Anonymousreply 216March 1, 2023 8:23 PM

R216 "satire few zone" is funnier than the satire.

by Anonymousreply 217March 1, 2023 10:10 PM

R214 not only are stewardesses allowed to wear trousers now, their asses are allowed to take up the entire aisle! This is especially disconcerting during a slow beverage service, seeing this planetary mass slowly approaching.

Better to smell cologne, than the body odor of strangers. Just a very small spray of a quality cologne on a clean body is nice. Must be subtle.

My Dad used Old Spice, this was a million years ago, in the 50s. He had a mug with the soap and brush as well. Loved to watch him shave, and he would let me soap my face and pretend to shave. My favorite aunt used Shalimar and Chanel No. 5. So these scents evoke nice memories.
