He was great on Howard Stern.

by Anonymousreply 1February 19, 2023 4:00 PM

Good riddance. Miserable bastard. I worked as crew on L&O: SVU and he was a fucking pain in the ass who’d blame the extras on set when he fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 2February 19, 2023 4:01 PM

Really^?

by Anonymousreply 3February 19, 2023 4:02 PM

Awww, that’s a shame. He was terrific in An Officer and a Gentleman, and he was pretty good in Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 4February 19, 2023 4:02 PM

He was wicked smart and well liked by his contemporaries

by Anonymousreply 5February 19, 2023 4:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 6February 19, 2023 4:07 PM

There is a DL obit protocol and this isn’t it

YOU are dead to me, OP

by Anonymousreply 7February 19, 2023 4:09 PM

Bill Maher pounced on him when he attacked a female panelist. He was forced to apologize.

by Anonymousreply 8February 19, 2023 4:09 PM

Oh nooo. I fucks with him; he brought wit and a New York realism to SVU. I wondered if that was his real personality.

by Anonymousreply 9February 19, 2023 4:11 PM

His father killer himself

His mother abused him and his brother

Henry Winkler is his cousin

He had testicular cancer in the 80s

He retired back in 2016

by Anonymousreply 18February 19, 2023 4:24 PM

78 is respectable

by Anonymousreply 19February 19, 2023 4:26 PM

And that brings us to three celebrities for the week: Welch, Stevens and Belzer. The Grim Reaper can take some time off, now.

Laraine's pretty reliable. Let's hope Belzer and Sizemore (on a precipice) get their third before Carter goes.

by Anonymousreply 22February 19, 2023 4:30 PM

I thought he was already dead, it must be the guy I always confuse him with.... can't remember his name a comedian I think. Why is everyone suddenly dying.

His wife Lady Chatterley was absurdly too hot for him.

I never watched the Law and Order shows but he was excellent on Homicide Life in the Street. He played Detective Munch on seven different programs, tying together The Wire with the X-Fiiles and Arrested Development.

Munch was the only character I could tolerate on SVU.

by Anonymousreply 29February 19, 2023 5:27 PM

He was on an X Files episode?

by Anonymousreply 30February 19, 2023 5:30 PM

No resemblance, but kind of the same type of comedian. Very dry

FUN FACT: Laraine Newman has a brother named Paul.

by Anonymousreply 37February 19, 2023 5:49 PM

he looked older than his age.

by Anonymousreply 38February 19, 2023 5:50 PM

I thought he had died years ago. I remember he looked terrible in his final SVU appearances and it’s been years since those.

by Anonymousreply 39February 19, 2023 6:10 PM

So sad. I love watching law and order sexy time reruns on ion on Saturdays and my favorites are the earlier seasons which of course he appeared on.

by Anonymousreply 40February 19, 2023 6:17 PM

Wow the dumb f*** comments wondering why people are dying as if they're they dropping Dead all of a sudden. all of these people dying "suddenly" are well into their 70s and 80s how f****** stupid are you?

by Anonymousreply 41February 19, 2023 6:20 PM

I loved him as Munch on SVU. Lost interest in the show after he and Cragen left the show. Their roles were decreased prior to their departures, but they were the backbone of the show needed. It's been unwatchable for years now.

by Anonymousreply 42February 19, 2023 6:24 PM

I'm not in touch with him, so I wouldn't know.

by Anonymousreply 43February 19, 2023 6:34 PM

How could he have "ruined" a shitty Pat Benatar music video? ALL of her music videos sucked.

He was a smart, funny guy. He did a dead on impression of Mick Jagger, quite hilarious but entirely accurate.

His brother committed suicide like his father—jumped off his roof.

I used to confuse him with with Richard Lewis.

Even in an episode of HLOTS on YT, the music is stripped out (two songs by Tom Waits). It's a good episode nonetheless, with some good Munch scenes.

by Anonymousreply 86February 20, 2023 4:42 AM

[quote] Homicide Life in the Street should’ve never been cancelled.

Of course it was cancelled. It never got good ratings. It stayed on a long time for a tv show that was low rated and expensive to produce.

There was a HLOTS blog wehre all the rabid fans of the show congregated. When it was announced the show would be cancelled the crazy fans screamed "No, it will not be cancelled, it will not, IT WILL NOT!" They said of course another network would pick it up and it would continue. I put forth the view that this was nonsense, and boy did they get mad! They were positively unhinged. I sometimes wondered what became of them. But I guess they simply switched their obsessed to Tom Fontana's "Oz" after HLOTS was no more.

by Anonymousreply 87February 20, 2023 6:11 AM

Just from his photos I am guessing he had a beautiful cut cock. Any intel?

Holy cow. So many celebrity deaths. Of course, no one gets out of here alive, I realize that. Someone mentioned Stevens. I had to google, as I didn't know who that was....Stella Stevens! That's the first I heard of that. It was mentioned that Belzer was related to Henry Winkler....now, I see a resemblence, with Winkler being better looking. RIP to Mr. Belzer, Ms. Stevens and all.

by Anonymousreply 98February 20, 2023 3:02 PM

"Of course it was cancelled. It never got good ratings. It stayed on a long time for a tv show that was low rated and expensive to produce."

I was gonna say. I don't know how far in advance they knew HLOTS would be canceled, but I don't remember the story arcs having massively inappropriate or incomplete conclusions. It was 6-7 seasons, 122 episodes. The rabid fans complaining of its cancellation at the time just shows that the era it existed in was very different. That sort of run now wouldn't be expected at all and would be quite impressive.

by Anonymousreply 99February 20, 2023 3:30 PM

His Lifetime talk show was awful and he was insufferable and ugly. But there were only so many cable channels so watched it. He was great on SVU.

by Anonymousreply 100February 20, 2023 4:40 PM

HLOTS had seven seasons. I'm the show's biggest fan. I may even have participated in the blog about which r87 shrieked. But if it had been canceled after season 5, it might have been better. The addition of such non-luminaries as Falsone, Ballard, and Sheppard had NBC suit footprints all over it, and it was not an improvement. Kellerman should have been the last addition to the detective squad. I was not a fan of Pembleton's stroke, either.

by Anonymousreply 101February 20, 2023 6:10 PM

[quote] Falsone, Ballard, and Sheppard had NBC suit footprints all over it

Yes the final season was cringe. They ended one season too late, not too soon.

I'd like to know how Laraine Newman is so close to this. Was she his mistress or in a thouple with him and Harlee McBride..

Is the only actor in television history to play the same character (Detective John Munch) in 11 different live-action series: Homicide: Life on the Street (1993), Law & Order (1990), The X-Files (1993), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), The Beat (2000), Law & Order: Trial by Jury (2005), Arrested Development (2003), The Wire (2002), Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2003), 30 Rock (2006), and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015).

by Anonymousreply 102February 20, 2023 8:12 PM

Laraine and Belz have been friends since the 1970s. He was one of the first people who befriended her when she moved to NYC to pursue a career there. She was probably friendly with his wife too. Not surprising she heard about his death before most did.

by Anonymousreply 103February 20, 2023 8:33 PM

"Homicide; LIfe on the Streets" got REALLY bad towards the end. Michael Michelle was brought on as a "beauty queen detective." Michelle Forbes was brought on as a slutty, alcoholic medican examiner. Callie Thorne and Jon Seda began a hot affair; one scene showed Seda licking and sucking a peach while Thorne creamed her panties. Yes, that show dreck in its later seasons.

by Anonymousreply 104February 20, 2023 10:17 PM

[quote] one scene showed Seda licking and sucking a peach while Thorne creamed her panties

I was thinking specifically of them ( thought I didn't recall the peach detail ) when I called the last season cringe

But back when it was good it was GOOD.

I ignored the show its first several seasons thinking it was just yet another cop show. This is where I came in and saw how wrong I had been.

by Anonymousreply 105February 20, 2023 10:43 PM

So what would HLOTS fans say are the peak years? I'd say seasons 1-4 are unimpeachable. 6-7 are problematic. I forget if the slide started in season 5 or if 5 was good all the way through. Regardless, I did watch all seven seasons and I liked fair amount of the final seasons, even with all the BS people have noted, and even though it was a marked drop off from the earlier seasons.

by Anonymousreply 109February 20, 2023 11:56 PM

I remember when that happened r107. It was horrible. Hohan physically assaulted Belzer in that clip. I won't watch it again.

Hulk could easily have killed him. When Belzer sprang up and went to a commercial break, he was in a state of shock. Blood can be seen down the back of his shirt. The next night, he showed the stitches.

He sued for $5 million, settled for $400,000. He should have gotten the 5 mil. What Hogan and Mr T did to him was humiliating and barbaric.

Belzer took the 400 K and used it to help finance a house in France.

by Anonymousreply 110February 21, 2023 12:11 AM

R55 this is a great and very eye opening clip. And it’s 1000 times worse now.
