My right-wing family won’t stop obsessing about buying food for “upcoming shortages”
I’ve warned them in the past about “no politics” when we are together.
They are far right, and I’m firmly on the left.
Now they’re going bonkers sending links about Bill Gates being behind food shortages.
Why is the right so goddamned obsessed with shortages and hating Bill Gates?
We are friendly and close and they have many good qualities, but they’re always so fearful about something along these lines, and I can’t fucking stand it. They know it but “want to warn” me. Guess I’ll have to be a broken record again and say I don’t want to discuss.

My late parents never would have held these extreme beliefs, especially my liberal feminist pro-choice pro-black pro-everything Jewish dad.

It's possible that uber-wealthy people who perhaps don't donate to right-wing politicians and organizations are considered "the enemy." Of course, right-wing donators like the Koch, Mercer, and Murdoch families aren't treated as the enemy, but they don't really want the end of democracy by overthrow because democratic governments helped them become and help them maintain their uber wealth, and they may also suspect they'll be killed by anarchists to get at their money. I think that's why Murdock is backing away from Trump: the last thing Murdock wants is an angry mob hanging him and his family on an improvised gallows. Jan 6 may have been the last straw for Murdoch.

I feel for you. My aunt married a brilliant man. He was an architect, then got into computers, and formed a company. But he is an Evangelical Christian and has recently bought property in Arkansas to live off grid, and has invested in many firearms and firearm training. The thing is, they are both in their 60s. My aunt isn't in great health. I truly think a lot of older, well -to-do men can't come to grips with their mortality, so they start to plan for a series of improbable events that they can have the illusion of control.

[quote] I’ve warned them in the past about “no politics” when we are together. They are far right, and I’m firmly on the left.
In her advice column in the Washington Post, Carolyn Hax repeatedly says something that I think is very smart: when you announce boundaries to other people you are really setting them for yourself, and not for them.
If you are setting boundaries, it is up to you to make clear to the other people that you are maintaining them and are not letting them get away with breaking them. They have no reason to obey your wishes unless you make it clear you will not engage with them when they disrespect your limits.
So, when they explicitly talk about things you've told them not to discuss in front of you, it is up to YOU to stop it. If just saying, "I thought I told you I won't talk about poltiics with you" gets no response, then you may need to just walk away, or stare and dramatically change the subject, or even (if you have to and an an absolute last resort) put your fingers in your ears and say, "La la la, I can't hear you when you talk about politics."
There's no point in your setting boundaries if you establish them, then they break them, and you then do whatsoever nothing about it.

The most important thing when dealing with someone you care about is to not to attempt to disprove or factually correct their delusions. I have needed a good therapist, R47, since my mom died nearly two years ago. She and I were very connected & I took care of her for 15 years in my home until the day she died.
Now that she is gone, although I have family, I don’t have the steadiness and friendship of my mom and I don’t know what I’ll do without her to talk with. I could have talked with my mom about this.
I have good friends, all liberal, who are wonderful and mostly liberal coworkers for venting so that is good.

Why are doomsday peeps always right-wing? I had a close friend from work who was the most right-wing person I’ve known, & she & her husband were rabid Y2K believers. They had an arsenal of weapons, bought a wood burning stove, tons of food rations (the ones that come in those gigantic buckets), withdrew all their retirement money/401ks at a huge loss, & planned to board up their house when doomsday (never) hit. They said my mother & I could hunker down with them, but my sister & her husband weren’t invited. I tried to talk sense into her but to no avail. After New Year’s she repaid her retirement withdrawals but lost a ton, & had to throw out all that food. So senseless.

[quote] Free Town Project
[quote] A group of libertarian activists attempted to take over the tiny town of Grafton, New Hampshire and transform it into a monument for libertarian ideals. The founders of what would become the Free Town Project drove around the New England countryside in a van “fortified by alcohol, tobacco and firearms" while searching for their paradise.[34] In addition to attracting a fair number of cranks and kooks, civic institutions were gutted, and the town was overrun by aggressive black bears feeding off unsecured food and improperly-discarded garbage.[35] Because not even the most basic common public services were supported (to the point that the town's single police officer didn't have the money to repair his patrol car), the residents of Grafton were literally left on their own to deal with the bear problem individually.[36] The town also enjoyed a sudden influx of sex offenders, a budget shortfall compounded by numerous lawsuits filed by libertarians, and the first homicide in living memory.[37] What a paradise!

They are fearful because they listen to propaganda all day. They are the "mark" for all the Tucker Carlsons and other public air wave liars and internet fraudsters. I think a good option might be to agree on one news source that you can share together. It might a a local newspaper. Any intervention would involve getting them in front of some fact-based information sources. A single source to start like a newspaper or magazine where you discuss the content. Small facts that can inform their views a bit at a time may have a gradual effect. But you will have something to talk about.
You should be thankful that they didn't decide to break the law attempting to overthrow the country like so many nuts. But it took seeing the inside of a jail cell for some of those far right people to finally see they were being misled.

I have family like this, OP, and I see them as little as possible. Why would you fight so damn hard to stay alive on a hellscape planet when you could go to to Jesus in paradise?
I think right-wing Christian preppers at the core don't really have any faith. I think it's all bluster and lying to themselves.
I don't get people like this anyway. The only reason I fear some kind of apocolypse is because it leads to camping. Just kill me first. R96 I'm not trying to belittle anyone's fears about a nuclear apocalypse, as that possibility is certainly very real, and absolutely terrifying, yet even the least sensible preppers will admit that they're not actually realistically planning on surviving anything like that.
I don't think it's realistic to hope to survive, nor do I think it would be worth trying, as R82 said, though I personally love to camp, and backpack myself. Smaller catastrophes like natural disasters, or an extended period without power or water are what most sensible preppers plan for.

[quote] Bill Gates is a real menance and he bought up a shit ton of American farmland. Has nothing to do with QAnon. Why do you think the media keeps going on about insects as a meat substitute.
Oh, Dumbvida... Leave your shitty apartment in Vegas Chinatown for an hour and breathe in some fresh air.

[quote]I'm not trying to belittle anyone's fears about a nuclear apocalypse, as that possibility is certainly very real, and absolutely terrifying, yet even the least sensible preppers will admit that they're not actually realistically planning on surviving anything like that.
More bullshit. Have you conducted a survey?
[quote]I don't think it's realistic to hope to survive, nor do I think it would be worth trying
That's you.

R99 is all over this thread probably posting from his Idaho compound with "Turner Diaries" prominently displayed in the background. Or, maybe, it's just our sad, superannuated Vegas barmaid?

When you have no argument, you do what R100 does.

R99 No, it isn't "bullshit", as I've always been what I deem a "sensible prepper". Even when I lived in NYC, I had beans, a huge sack of rice, extra bottled water, crackers, biscuits, and pasta in my storage locker in the basement. I also follow a few preppers on YouTube, including the lesbian Prepper Princess.
She's one who has learnt her lessons the hard way, as regards too many "apocalypse buckets", and far too many dehydrated meals. As they began to go off, she began eating them, and said they were terrible... no flavour, and far too salty. Most people with some familiarity with this community understand MANY take it to extremes.
In the event of a nuclear attack, where do you honestly think you'll find non-radioactive contaminated food and water once your provisions run out? That's assuming you'd survive the initial blast and fallout. A big assumption on your part. There are far more logical and practical reasons why many people prep, rather than your constant fear-mongering over a nuclear strike.

OP, have you seen 'The Survivors' (1983)?

R98, ad hominem is the best you can do? You haven't refuted anything I've posted. Do better, bitch.
