Perhaps womyn are protesting against the patriarchy because they don't want the chief protagonist of stories or womyn who should be admired to be referred to in the same manner as a narcotic.

I know several people who pronounce it that way. They are all black. I know a former addict who doesn't pronounce it like that and he's white. Maybe it's a cultural thing.
