"Should Child Acting Just Be Banned Already?"

"'I know a lot of kids that grew up in the industry,' Evan Rachel Wood, who began acting as a child, says in the film. 'And what surprised me when I got older was finding out that pretty much all of the young men were abused in some way sexually.'"

[quote]pretty much all of the young men were abused in some way sexually

Does she name any of them?

by Anonymousreply 1February 18, 2023 3:49 AM

R1 Of course not. It took years for her to say anything about Manson.

by Anonymousreply 2February 18, 2023 3:51 AM

They should only ban precocious child acting.

by Anonymousreply 3February 18, 2023 3:53 AM

Time for the perpetrators to be named then. Someone has to take the first step.

by Anonymousreply 4February 18, 2023 3:54 AM

So what's the solution? All movies taking place in a childless world? CGI children alongside real adults with female voice actors doing their high pitched voices? That would be pretty creepy and distracting.

by Anonymousreply 5February 18, 2023 3:57 AM

r2 while falling out of career favor.,.. the both of them. This is why it gets questionable with manson, even if a well known poseur, the women that actresses that got involved with him were going through a classic rebellion phase. Typical enough for celebs when they transition out of child acting (or sy Madge and her fading celebrity) they're eager to cut ties with the past and destroy their reputation... to be edgy. An

No, but parents should be doing their jobs by making sure their kids aren't being molested, drinking booze, or using drugs, and by making sure they have a backup plan for when the roles dry up. The parents should also have their own money to spend and let their kid know they are free to quit any time they want if they no longer enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 7February 18, 2023 4:23 AM

R2, she must be an extremely poor judge of character.

by Anonymousreply 8February 18, 2023 4:27 AM

DIdn't her ex-husband admit he was abused as a child actor? The guy from Billy Elliot?

Plus Woods has a lot of former child actor friends...

by Anonymousreply 9February 18, 2023 5:34 AM

That was long and very interesting article.

by Anonymousreply 10February 18, 2023 6:53 AM

R7 what do you even mean ? what director will hire your child if they can't fuck them ? do want you want with her, as long as she brings a check back at the end of the day, that's what I say.

by Anonymousreply 11February 18, 2023 6:57 AM

I'd be happy if i didn't see any kids in movies, esp movies about kids and teens. I don't mind them in real life but to spend a couple of hours in their world is asking for too much

Churches should be banned from influencing children. That's how they get lifetime free workers/zombies. Get them when they're young and brainwash them. And then they fuck them.

by Anonymousreply 14February 18, 2023 7:25 AM

Children should be only allowed to appear in ONE film/TV series and that is that until they are 18.

Too many of them come out damaged from the experience and it is extremely rare for the fucking parents to be held accountable. They are enablers.

by Anonymousreply 15February 18, 2023 7:25 AM

I'll pay your tuition if you cross state lines and let me and my friends fuck you. Oh, and we'll give you X. It's legal now. You can get away with it year after year.

by Anonymousreply 16February 18, 2023 7:30 AM

Most child actors quit the business, go to college, and lead normal lives. It’s the same kind of time commitment and pressure as competitive sports or debate. These people just have an inflated sense of self worth and salaciousness. Move along!

by Anonymousreply 17February 18, 2023 7:41 AM

If a child actor has a solid family foundation, and a good home life to begin with, the acting profession can be very rewarding, build a college fund, travel the world, or become an Oscar winning director. Some grow up to live normal healthy successful lives with no significant trauma or regrets.

I worked on a show in New York that had a bunch of kids in it. On closing night, the kids were sobbing, because they didn't want the experience to be over.

by Anonymousreply 19February 18, 2023 8:20 AM

No. Punish perpetrators. That's the way to go.

by Anonymousreply 20February 18, 2023 8:36 AM

The other side of the coin is that the advent of the movies promised some kids a route out of their mundane and perhaps miserable existence, so some craved the exposure.

Online culture, particularly TikTok, has enlarged that trajectory a zillionfold. Every kid wants to screen-famous now. So, although this piece asks a provocative and substantive question, the horses are waaaaaaay out of the barn.

[Quote]Should Child Acting Just Be Banned Already?"

Yes. We are ready and able to take on these roles.

by Anonymousreply 22February 18, 2023 9:51 AM

WTF is with banning this and banning that?

No. Child actors shouldn’t be banned. What needs to happen is that kids on sets need monitors who aren’t affiliated to the film industry, while they’re on set, so that every second of that child’s set time, is properly monitored.

Obviously, some of these parents cannot be trusted. Some of the people BTS who work in the industry cannot be trusted. Some people who are on camera cannot be trusted.

Hire monitors that are a third party contractor or whatever.

We cannot ban risk. We can control risk as much as possible, by taking all possible steps to reduce it as much as possible.

Child actors who died of drug overdoses/ suicide: Brad Renfro, Christopher Pettiet, Jonathan Brandis, River Phoenix, Lee Thompson Young, Andrew Koenig, Brad Bufanda, Harold Pruett, Rodney Harvey I saw a post on a message board for parents of children actors that said that Bob Villard, known pedophile and talent agent, was connected to four child actors who took their own lives/ ODed. Christopher Pettiet is one. I suspect Jonathan Brandis is another. Supposedly Bob Villard molested a lot of child actors.

by Anonymousreply 24February 18, 2023 10:15 AM

R24, that’s why we need completely independent child monitors.

Fucked up people who are molesting kids, get into every sector there is, but children do not, other than becoming child actors.

Every child needs an independent monitor, while on set.

Sadly, there’s not much we can do about what happens in kids when they’re off the set, and also happen to have either really fucked up or clueless parents.

Check out the heavily suppressed documentary An Open Secret

by Anonymousreply 26February 18, 2023 10:46 AM

Some parents just see their kids as meal vouchers and turn a blind eye to inappropriate behaviour.

It's shocking, but true. The lure of fame and fortune are a price they're willing to allow their children to pay.

R13 She didn’t “lose” the $…the tax man took it. That’s not at all the same as what you’ve implied! Poor tax planning is not the same as theft.

One of my Husbands Sisters and her Husband adopted and raised a little boy. At the time I didn't know them very well, we lived in different states at that time and my Sister in Law was quite a bit older than me. When we went to visit them they had this kid dressed like a miniature Jim Baker or Billy Graham and had him trained to preach the Gospel. The kid at the time was about 9 or 10, and they had him preaching fire and brimstone shit. I mean this kid would strut around and yell at the adults about sin and hell, like he knew ALL about it. I remember thinking, if this kid gets in my face he'll get smacked. I'd never seen a kid act that way and the adults praised the shit out of him. When we left the family gathering later that day, I asked ( my now husband), what the fuck was WRONG with that kid?! My husband laughed his ass off and said; you're in West Virginia now baby! We laugh about it now and the kid is a grown man ( who didn't turn out to be a preacher), who has his own kids. It really showed me how kids can be trained, brainwashed or whatever you want to call it, and very vulnerable and need protection. At the time I was 19 yrs old and I remember being disturbed by the adults more than the kid. The world of Hollywood for kids has to be traumatic.

by Anonymousreply 29February 18, 2023 11:25 AM

The world of West Virginia has to be pretty traumatic for kids too, R29.

This is more of why we need to ban children from public places entirely... along with parents/guardians.

They believe they should rule over everyone else.., their way and their way only. It leads to too many conflicts.

Close the public schools and let them be home schooled from the safety of their homes, where their guardians can set any rules they desire... except as covid has shown us, most of their guardians can't stand the little fuckers either

My son, Burke, is a fabulous child actor. My husband and I gave him a script and he just acted it out like nothing.

by Anonymousreply 44February 21, 2023 12:44 PM

Banning children from acting is stupid. Most child actors are local children from theatres and talent agencies. They work and go to school and most don't continue acting as an adult career. Majority grow up normal and get regular jobs. And are people really supposed to make TV shows and movies without any children present? That would be bizarre. Parents need to do their job and stop blaming everyone else. It's always the fault of Hollywood, video games or the media yet not parents who are negligent and don't watch their kids.
