Predictions for the next two celeb deaths-Robert Wagner and Linda Ronstadt
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 15, 2023 6:53 PM |
I never found her the least bit pretty sexy or appealing. I can understand why many did though.
I once saw on a newsstand in Rome a photo of that same newsstand back in 1968 and it looked like every magazine had her on the cover.
So she was addicted to her beauty - she couldn't let it go, I find that very sad - hadn't really looked at recent photos of her so I'm taken aback by the recent photos.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 15, 2023 6:53 PM |
She was legendary for never exposing her breasts in a film.

Truly bizarre tweet. Well, no - she didn't have breast implants (as far as we know) because she was naturally busty. And she hadn't had Botox when this photo was taken, because she was still young. WTF is his point?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 15, 2023 7:01 PM |
Yeah, I don’t think she had breast implants either. Don’t know what people are going on about her tits being silicone. Jealousy?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 15, 2023 7:03 PM |
Either way, 82 is not young. You can catch a wrong gust of wind at that age and then pass away. I don’t understand why we expect people to live to be 100 when living past your seventies means an increasingly pointless and difficult life where you slowly lose your functions.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 15, 2023 7:04 PM |
Remember when she wore this to her son’s wedding?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 15, 2023 7:05 PM |
I recently saw Bedazzled (1967) which is great fun. She was so gorgeous in that I couldn't take my eyes off her. And I think she had on crocheted pants or something equally as unflattering to 99% of all humans.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 15, 2023 7:07 PM |
If she didn't have breast implants she most definitely had a breast lift. To keep them upright. Probably got some reshaping done then as well if not a full reduction.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 15, 2023 7:08 PM |
R28 - when Barbara Windsor died, I remember reading a (sincere, as far as I can tell) comment along the lines of "gone far too soon". She was 83!

by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 15, 2023 7:10 PM |
R31 Most women who have large breasts do for convenience reasons, gravity and weight gain is a real bitch. People on this site often mistake breast lifts for implants. Granted it’s all gay men here, but I’m gay as well, just from a family of busty women. My mother and older sister have gotten lifts as they’ve aged.

She was genuinely talented, even beyond the face and the big boobs. (She had a nice singing voice, and had decent comic timing.) But it was pretty universally agreed she was a horrible person to work with, and her daughter said she was a terrible mother.

After Sophia Loren and Liz Taylor turned it down, it was said Aaron Spelling offered the role of 'Alexis Carrington' to Welch (who would've been 41 at the time) in 'Dynasty'. But Welch turned down the role, as well, since she was starting rehearsals to replace Lauren Bacall in 'Woman of the Year' in late 1981. I'm betting Joan Collins was happy for that.

I can remember the sensation she caused in “One Million, B.C.” Even as a gay boy, I was impressed by her beauty, great face and body, she was really gorgeous. Needless to say, the straight boys in my junior high school class were agog and abuzz.
I saw her on stage when she replaced Lauran Bacall in “Woman of the Year.” She was surprisingly good, and when she made her entrance in a skin tight Norma Kamali sweatshirt dress, the entire audience gasped as one — her body was spectacular and she had real glamor and magnetism.
The abbreviated Times obit mentions that she was the first ‘60s sex symbol after the death of Marilyn Monroe, completely forgetting Ann-Margret’s spectacular debut in “Bye Bye Birdie” in ‘63 (cover of Life, 11-page spread). But I guess A-M had successfully reinvented herself as a good actress by the 1970s (after “Carnal Knowledge”). Welch never quite managed that, perhaps because of her diva rep.

Raquel Welch was any director’s nightmare. She was just outrageous.
I’ll give you the opening story. We sat in the meeting, and there were two women who were playing her lieutenants. One of them was Vicki Fredericks, who was a Broadway dancer who had the lead in a Broadway show called, Dancin’, and she was quite lovely and a great dancer. And the other woman, was from Texas, she was the Playboy Bunny of the Year. They were both quite beautiful.
So we sat and read for at least an hour. And our usual routine was, we dismissed everybody but the star and the execs. Pam stayed, Robin stayed, and I stayed. And we would say to the guest star, “Do you have any questions or is there anything we can help you with?” And Raquel said, “Ah yes, who are the two girls that are going to play my lieutenants?” And I said, “The two women that were sitting on your right.” And she said, “Oh, I didn’t notice them.”
Then she said she had a problem with her entrance. Robin comes running into the apartment, says to Pam [that] the Nekrons, or whoever they were, are coming to kidnap him. And she says, “When are they coming?” He says, “They could be here any second!” And there’s an explosion. The doors to the apartment fly off, onto the couch. And in walks the first girl. Vicki Fredericks walks down stage left. The other girl comes down, walks down stage right, and they both pose with their hands on their hips. And then Raquel enters.
Raquel said, “You can’t have them come in before me.”
And we said to Raquel, “If they come in after you, they’re gonna distract. They’re going to pull the eye. What we’re doing here is, we’re setting it up. The audience sees this woman come down, ‘No, that’s not her.’ Then the next one, ‘No, that’s not her’—and then you enter! You know? And they frame you! It’s the perfect entrance.” But if someone comes in after her, the audience looks at the person coming in that’s moving.

Her autobiography was titled: ‘Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage’
Seriously
by Anonymous | reply 131 | February 15, 2023 8:34 PM |
She said, “I have an idea. Supposing they wear dog masks, and I lead them in on leashes.” So I knew immediately that she did not want to compete with these two very lovely women. And that never happened—we would not allow that, the dog masks.
What I said to her was, “Raquel, your character is too strong. You don’t need to have them in dog masks or leashes. All you need to do is snap your fingers. Those girls will drop to their knees.” And she said, “Oh, I like that.”
At one point, Robin was trying to talk around her idea about it not being good for them to come in first. And Robin was trying to explain it to her. Pam was standing there, and Pam said, “You know, Raquel, he’s right.” And Raquel said, “Honey, please.” And she stepped in front of Pam, blocking her, then went on to talk to Robin. Pam made a fist and made believe she was hitting [Raquel] in the back of the head, and walked away.
[After that], Pam would do that every time she came on stage. She’d sneak up behind Raquel, and make believe she was punching her in the head.
Also, she had her future husband there: Andre, a French director. He would stand behind me while I would talk to her, and I would see her look over my shoulder [to see him say] yes or no. She got me so angry. [At one point], I gave her a note: “Raquel, I need you stand a little closer to Robin for the two-shot.” She said, “OK.” And then I said, “That note I gave you is probably the most brilliant note a director has ever given an actress.” And she said, “What are you talking about?” And I said, “I know it’s brilliant, because Andre agreed with me.”
David Misch:
There was a scene which was incorporated into the original script, where Raquel Welch was to torture Mr. Williams. But the “joke” was that all her tortures were sexy. So the idea was that there was going to be a hot tub, and she was going to torture him by rubbing him. And you know, most of the show was set [based on the freelancer’s original script]. The hot tub was there. We [already] had it, it had to be used. We had no way to not do that scene. So we tried to write it funny, and I think we did.
But my main memory of that scene was not our hilarious lines, but that after the scene was over, everyone was [supposed] to get out of the hot tub and to move on to the next scene. And Robin said, “I’m afraid I’m not going to be getting out of the hot tub.” Because he had, uh, a piece of physical anatomy that had gotten not appropriate for the audience to see at that point. Raquel Welch had been rubbing him all over.

She was an unusual case in that she checked off every box for sexy without being very sexually appealing.
One can see why men fantasized over Marilyn or Miss Angie Dickinson. They could be warm and funny. Even gay men thought they would be fun to hang out with.
Raquel not so much. She was sexy like a Corvette Stingray was sexy. But not warm or appealing.

Faye insists in her memoir there was no feud, but that the press made it seem so when she took a misstep and bumped Raquel over during there fight scene. Raquel sprained her wrist. Hmmmm.
I read in another book that both actresses were participating in a fashion show and wanted to wear the same dress in it. Faye insisted she should get it, as she “knew how to [italic]sell[/italic] it.” Raquel countered by asking with what body Dunaway intended to show the dress.
The only other time I’ve seen their names linked was when Jon Peters was considering projects to put together for Babs . He wanted to redo THE WOMEN with Streisand as Sylvia, Dunaway as Mary, and Welch as Crystal.

Petty bikini drama on "A Swingin' Summer":
Cast member Lori Williams remarked, “Raquel Welch was a problem on this movie and she was a major, major bitch. She wanted to have her signature bikini in the film. I had bought my bikinis before we got to Lake Arrowhead and she wouldn’t let me wear any of them. I had to go out and buy new swimsuits. Working with her was not a lot of fun.” She added, “She kept trying to get people fired. We lost two cameramen who quit because she was just wretched. For me, she was just the worst person I ever met during the time I worked.”
And from Marie Osmond:
“I have to say, I never trash people. I’ve worked with lots and lots of people. But, I remember vividly… I worked with Raquel Welch and I was very excited to meet her. She just wasn’t nice. She was mean, not just to me, but to everybody.” Osmond recalled one particular incident, after the crew had made a white set with a full orchestra for Raquel’s performance, she took one look at it and said, “I want it black.”

Brief illness probably is cancer- gastric, pancreatic or an acute leukemia or lymphoma. All are and can be fast. by Anonymous | reply 212 | February 15, 2023 10:17 PM |
She was sure purty and could wear huge wigs like few others but she was also a dreadful actress. The only watchable movies she made were the ones where she was part of a larger ensemble cast. She passed her lack of talent on to her daughter.

The prestige project she did (THE WILD PARTY for Merchant-Ivory) bombed, so maybe that turned her off anything arty.

In his memoir, Nolte said he told Welch (whom he called "Rocket") that she was miscast in "Cannery Row," and she agreed with him. He found her replacement, Debra Winger, to be a good actress, but a huge pain in the ass off screen. (Still, he agreed to work with her again in "Everybody Wins.")

My favorite Raquel moment, starts at 2:08.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | February 16, 2023 2:34 AM |
As a native Angelino, I've developed a kind of 6th sense when a celebrity is nearby. It was the early 90s, and I was in a big box store in West Los Angeles, looking for a cordless landline phone. While browsing the aisles, I spot a woman in a trench coat, a silk scarf around her neck, a hat pulled low, and large sunglasses, all in an attempt to not be recognized. But it is August in LA (about 100 degrees outside), and that getup only drew attention to her, at least it did to this gayling. I move closer to get a better look, and it's Raquel Welch!
She notices that I've turned to look at her, and she stares at me as if daring me to say something. But terrified, I pretend I didn't recognize her and continue my search for a phone and moved on. She then to my surprise moved closer to me, glaring at me, as if demanding that I recognize her. But I'm scared, so I continue to look for a phone while ignoring her.
After a bit of standing around, loosening her scarf, taking off the sunglasses and adjusting her hat, I still don't take the bait and don't say anything to her. After a bit, she sighs disappointedly, turns, and walks away. As soon as she's gone, I go up to a salesperson and tell him that Raquel Welch had just been in his department. He simply gave me a blank stare and asked, "Who's that?" It is still one of my favorite LA celebrity stories ever.

[quote]R282 That Cannery Row story is terrible though - and I do believe her side (especially if she and Debs had the same management) and I’m glad she got all that money and showed them.
I wish the trial transcripts were online. I don’t understand how the producers stood to save money by firing Welch and hiring Winger. Wouldn’t Welch have been paid upfront already? Or did she stand to reap profit percentage points once the film was released, those would be voided, and they didn’t have to offer that to her replacement?

"Can she be cremated with all that silicone in her"
Ask a mortician..
Long story short some funeral directors (ok, undertakers/morticians) will remove silicone breast implants before a body is cremated, others don't bother.
As for other bits such metal joint replacements, dental fillings, etc.. they are left in body and recovered from the ashes after cremation. We know from the ghoulish practices of Nazi Germany there is money in metal after bodies are cremated. This is still true today, though local laws may dictate who benefits from sale of such recovered metals.

Honey at 82 a brief illness can be the common cold. Once above age 70 and certainly 80 any minor infection or whatever can result in death. Ask doctors or nurses how a once seemingly vibrant 80 year old person can go downhill fast.

She emerged wearing dark glasses and a smile, with her then husband Andre close behind holding a small dog.

A lot of people are exaggerating the weight gain. She had been slowly getting larger for years, like a lot of older people do, and was already pretty big when she was in that "Latin Lover" movie in 2017.
She looked 55 in 2017 but she was 77, which means that she was still dealing with all the health and aging problems associated with being 77, regardless of external appearances.

R366 "CHARLTON HESTON would not work with the legendary Hollywood star John Wayne in a film that he starred in and directed because of his own political views. But years later, he expressed a lot of "regret" in turning down the Spaghetti Western icon."
John Wayne wasn't a Spaghetti Western icon. (Meaning: 1960s-70s westerns made in Europe by Sergio Leone and others). That was Clint Eastwood. Wayne was a Hollywood western icon.
When I read things like that in articles I don't even read the rest (and there are more and more things like that written by young entertainement writers who don't know what they're talking about).
Wayne said and beleived some controversial right-wing-associated things but he was moderate in some things, too, and well liked. I would say Ward Bond was more of a virulent right-winger who would possible be a Trumper today. Although Republicans of thse days who were let's say, Nixon supporters (like Jimmy Stewart, or Wayne) would most likely not be Trumpers. That's just my feeling, anyway.

Her tits aren’t big by today’s standards because everyone is obese now or has implants. And silicone implants were not hugely common back then, they existed, but a naturally busty woman would not get them for enhancement. Breast implants became common in the 1980s/1990s.

Spanish people come in all colors, from blond to dark. But I think he was using "Spanish" to mean something akin to Mexican, which is what a lot of elders do, especially on the East Coast. "We went to a Spanish restaurant" (meaning a Mexican restaurant) is a classic irritating use of the word Spanish.

One moring before work I watched a movie on TCM called Flareup. (1969, I think.) The only Raquel movie I ever saw, really - I guess I also saw Myra Breckenridge but I'm not sure what that was. In this was she was a Vegas showgirl who is stalked (in LA, where she has moved)by a crazy guy who killed his wife (her bestie). Honestly, she was good. Jean Byron (the mom on the Patty Duke Show) played a mentor of hers, of sorts, who's obviously a lesbian.

Surely the implant rumours come from her breasts looking so much larger from the 80s onwards. In the 60s they were big for a woman with such low body fat (genetic lottery) but as she aged they became big by any measure. Once in her 70s each one looked the size of a human head! Not sure if that’s implants or she gained a lot of fat in them as she aged. They used to call that becoming “matronly” but most women also gain in the tummy and back at the same time.
Look at the size of these things at the. National Aerobics Championships! 34:00

I always enjoyed this incident as they filmed "Fantastic Voyage".
When filming the scene where the other crew members remove attacking antibodies from Raquel Welch for the first time, director Richard Fleischer allowed the actors to grab what they pleased. Gentlemen all, they specifically avoided removing them from Welch's breasts, with an end result that Fleischer described as a "Las Vegas showgirl" effect.
He pointed this out to the cast members - and on the second try, the actors all reached for her breasts. Finally, Fleischer realized that he would have to choreograph who removed what from where, and the result is seen in the final cut.

Anyone I know who has put short illness in the obit meant aggressive cancer - lung, pancreas or acute leukaemia. A coworker did that Mt Hood race last summer. He was in amazing shape. He died on Christmas Eve. The time from feeling under the weather to being in a body bag was 4 days. Leukaemia. I’ve never know anyone to live more than a few months after discovering they had pancreatic cancer, including my uncle. His sons used ‘peaceful after a short illness” when the reality was a hellish 4 months of pain and delirium and confusion. They were too traumatised to see the words pancreatic cancer in print at the time.
Raquel just looks 81 in those “final photos” I very much doubt she had a terminal illness at the time.

It’s additionally tacky to wear black to a wedding. It sends the signal one’s in mourning about the event.
You also don’t wear red because it appears you’re trying to pull focus from the bride.
Why Raquel would choose this outfit on this day is very mysterious… or very revealing. She could afford just about any dress out there and THAT was her choice?! Clearly she couldn’t resist hauling her tits out to be the center of attention for even one afternoon.

A very odd incident is that when Farrah Fawcett had a supporting role in MYRA BRECKINRIDGE (1970) she did a photo shoot wearing Raquel Welch’s wardrobe. I don’t know if it was the studio’s idea, or designer Theadora Van Runkle‘s, or Fawcett herself’s… certainly it wasn’t Raquel’s!
I can’t even picture what would have happened if she showed up that day, and was like, “Where are all my costumes??” The wardrobe mistress would have edged toward the door, murmuring, “Um, they’re being used on… Miss Fawcett?”

If Fawcett had been under contract to 20th Century Fox at the time, it would make sense, because studios would get the best pictures they could of their long term employees for publicity and such. And that Theadora Van Runkle wardrobe is amazing.
But Fawcett was under contract to Screen Gems at the time, I think, which was a division of Columbia Pictures.

The article in R537's pic makes no sense. It says her brother, James, died in the early 1990's, yet that pic was taken in 2010.

R547, Wagner claimed when asked on Gilbert Gottfried’s podcast that he and Raquel never fucked.

Wagner's wig in the De Sica film is not to be believed especially in the wind.
Even during the height of La Dolce Vita as Raquel filmed in Rome she didn't whore around.

What makes you think it was a wig? Wagner isn't bald.

Even Wagner wrote that he thought a certain wig he wore in a film made him look like Jane Wyman. Hes been wearing wigs and pieces for decades.

Filming Myra Beckinridge sounds like a grade A cluster fuck.
An appalled Bette Davis turned down role of Leticia van Allen. Lucky Mae West was induced to come out of her crypt and proceeded to behave every inch of the ancient diva that she was.

The obituaries have all pointed out Raquel Welch's comedic abilities as an actress. I have a new respect for her, after enjoying seeing her performances in The Three Musketeers and Seinfeld.
Many obits and interviews with others highlight her sex appeal to men from her role in Fantastic Voyage onward. While most men enjoyed seeing her in the skintight rubber (neoprene?) wetsuit, I along with countless gay men really enjoyed seeing Stephen Boyd in a skintight wetsuit!

Okay, I will tell my RW story: I was working on "Welcome to the Captain", a tv sitcom show (2008? 2007? it didn't get picked up because the writer's strike happened during ep 6 or 7 filming). She did her own makeup and hair (which was immaculate), and had an elderly black assistant woman (who really didn't do anything). I happened upon both of them in the bathroom, and the assistant said I looked like Sandra Oh, and Raquel replied, "Oh she's much prettier than she." We kind of hit it off after that (no one would talk to her), and I used to accompany her sometimes from the set to where ever. She told me that she always married for love, never money.
She also fractured her ankle wearing little kitten heels on set on Friday, but on Monday, she was back on set working. She was delightful to work with (I guess flattery will get you places), but Jeffery Tambor was a bit of a bastard on set, but strangely not off the set- we learned that you cannot erase "Scientologist Jeffery Tambor" from the internet at that time. Also Chris Klein really was torn up over Katie having a baby with Tom.

Farrah Fawcett told a funny story about Raquel on the set of Myra B. They played lovers and they had a dialogue scene together where Raquel's close-ups were shot first and Farrah's second. Just before they were ready to shoot Farrah, Raquel says to her, "You know, you should do something about the yellow in your teeth. In person it's not noticeable but where you're up there on the huge Panavision screen..."

I remember her best in an early-2000s series called American Family, which ran on PBS. It starred Edward James Olmos and was about a Hispanic family living in Los Angeles. Raquel played the flighty aunt. I guess it could be considered stunt casting, but I thought she was very good in it.

Lauren Bacall was feared and loathed by many in the "Woman of the Year" Broadway company. She played the role for over a year and the company breathed a sigh of relief when Raquel Welch took over and not only received glowing reviews, but was selling tickets.
A month into Raquel's run the crew circulated t-shirts they'd had made which said "Bring Back Betty!"

Looks like people are not having anything to do with Kim Kardashian being named any sort of heir to Raquel Welch's bombshell throne.
" Sunny Hostin laughed as the audience booed, joking that they were "turning" on her after she suggested Kardashian as the modern-day equivalent to the late Welch's sex symbol status."
by Anonymous | reply 584 | February 19, 2023 11:00 AM |
Raquel Welch is now listed on Find A Grave for those wishing to leave flowers. Still no word on funeral or burial details.
My guess is everything will be private much like Leslie Jordan with some sort of public memorial service later on.
Think what a circus Marilyn Monroe's funeral was and that occurred sixty some odd years ago; with today's modern technology funerals for famous persons have potential to become even more of a circus.
That being said if Ms. Welch is going to have a Catholic service (with or without a mass) a church must be booked and thus some bits are made public regardless.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | February 19, 2023 12:37 PM |
r585 Who was the last big public Hollywood funeral? Was it Frank Sinatra? I think even Elizabeth Taylors was private?
by Anonymous | reply 586 | February 19, 2023 12:54 PM |
Elizabeth Taylor was buried with Jewish rites one day after her demise. Despite short notice it was a public funeral and tons of people turned up to gawk.
Speed of events likely helped keep a lid on what otherwise may have been a circus. You pretty much had to be in L.A. or able to get there in less than 24 hours.
Then consider given her age and recent health Ms. Taylor and or her family long had laid out plans for final arrangements. Much like Elizabeth II all that remained once death occurred was to put things into action.

No really comparable as Monroe was in her 30s, still a movie star, and along with E. Taylor the #1 female sex symbol/movie star in the world. (Was her funeral really a circus?) Raquel was a former movie queen in her 80s.

This is about Bacall, but I was home sick recently and watched a lot of old Password episodes. On that show, in the 60s, she was charming, self-deprecating, laughed a lot, was friendly and warm to the contestants. Would never know she was a bitch in real life! Then I read a memoir where the author said as a kid he and two friends rode their bikes to a location (Pasadena?) where she was making a film. They hung out outside her trailer, waiting to see her, then they asked for her autograph. Her response: "Get lost!"

R594, Marilyn Monroe’s funeral was not a circus at all. Joe DiMaggio took control and banned the Hollywood crowd from attending, even then President Kennedy’s sister Patricia Lawford.

Isn't there some sort of union rule or law that when an actors face is fully seen they are paid more?
Years ago watching a film being shot on location from window of a friend's apartment one of the extras turned his head to face camera and director lost it. Later asked around and was told something along above lines.
