Why Do So Many Young Black Kids Wear Nirvana T-Shirts??

I'm serious. I see them, when I'm out and about, everywhere I go. I'm convinced, they may think Nirvana is a fashion label, but maybe not? I'm not racially trolling, I'm just genuinely curious. I think most of them, have no idea they are a 30+ year-old band.

Have you seen this? What say you DL??

by Anonymousreply 52December 12, 2023 6:58 AM

Whatever

by Anonymousreply 1February 14, 2023 7:33 PM

On sale at Goodwill.

by Anonymousreply 2February 14, 2023 7:48 PM

Go feed a grease fire, OP.

by Anonymousreply 3February 14, 2023 8:07 PM

[quote]I'm not racially trolling

If you have to say it ...

by Anonymousreply 4February 14, 2023 8:10 PM

Is OP our obsessed-with-random-unnecessary-commas troll?

by Anonymousreply 5February 14, 2023 8:12 PM

Troll

by Anonymousreply 6February 14, 2023 8:14 PM

OP here's a thought, perhaps they are fans of Nirvana?

by Anonymousreply 7February 14, 2023 8:14 PM

Teen Spirit

by Anonymousreply 8February 14, 2023 8:14 PM

Whatever....nevermind.

by Anonymousreply 9February 14, 2023 8:16 PM

Dumb

by Anonymousreply 10February 14, 2023 8:30 PM

Nirvana shirts are a fashion thing for young people in recent years, but not just Black kids.

by Anonymousreply 11February 14, 2023 9:22 PM

Me so dumb, OP.

by Anonymousreply 12February 14, 2023 9:34 PM

Why would anyone where a Nirvana t-shirt is a better question

by Anonymousreply 13February 14, 2023 9:35 PM

^ wear.

by Anonymousreply 14February 14, 2023 9:36 PM

So what you are saying OP is that black people who wear a Nirvana shirt could not possibly be fans of Nirvana, and must be too stupid to Google the shirt they are wearing to see what is about.

Right.

by Anonymousreply 15February 14, 2023 9:39 PM

R13 Cause they were a great band?

by Anonymousreply 16December 10, 2023 7:08 PM

T,o,o, m,a,n,y, c,o,m,m,a,s, tmc;dr

by Anonymousreply 17December 10, 2023 7:15 PM

OP is making cultural assumptions most people (white, black, or other) make, about what music appeals to which group. I. e, "More white kids like rock.. Black kids like R&B and hip hop more." Everybody thinks it, but OP says it. This is distasteful to many, when said aloud.

by Anonymousreply 18December 10, 2023 7:25 PM

Because, like it is for most people, black or white, it's about a girl.

by Anonymousreply 19December 10, 2023 7:25 PM

I know that the 90s are in with teenagers these days. I don’t know if it’s the same as all those girls wearing metal t shirts for bands they didn’t listen to in the 2000s or if 90s music is actually back in again.

by Anonymousreply 20December 10, 2023 7:26 PM

Maybe the black dudes would be down to fuck white pretty boy Kurt? Black dudes like that kind pass-around whiteboy.

You have, used, your entire, quota, of commas, O,P.

by Anonymousreply 22December 10, 2023 7:46 PM

R18 is correct.

BTW if you're working in fashion, you're out there making notes on "what the black kids are wearing".

That some of you think such a thing is racist only shows how dumb you are.

by Anonymousreply 23December 10, 2023 7:53 PM

Lol, OP is definitely fashion. Kurt Cobain is an icon. But it’s fashion choice. They probably don’t even listen to grudge. I’m glad to have schooled you OP. Love you. Happy Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 24December 10, 2023 7:54 PM

OP is not being racist and was asking an honest observation/question. I don’t think you cunts realize datalounge is like Reddit for some gay men. Why bash? Also I started to notice the trend as well amongst Gen Z. Because of seen some ghetto chirren’ rocking that Nirvana shirt and I just know based on where we were and everything else about their steez they don’t listen to grudge or Nirvana.

by Anonymousreply 25December 10, 2023 7:57 PM

Umm, maybe OP isn't aware of this but Black youth have been listening to rock music fairly regularly since the late 90s early 2000s. Especially Nu Metal bands like Linkin Park, Korn, and Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, etc. This is due to the fact that Nu Metal bands incorporated rap into their music quite heavily.

This was my shit in high school.

by Anonymousreply 26December 10, 2023 8:00 PM

Fashion choice but they might like the music. Nirvana hits are popular enough with gen z including black teens.

by Anonymousreply 27December 10, 2023 8:03 PM

R26 I feel you but think about it. There aren’t enough black youth listening to rock especially grudge in America that anecdotally OP would encounter so many in public wearing Nirvana t-shirts. You get it now. It’s math. Think; you seem smart. Nirvana is hip hop now. I’m talking about the culture and its fashion statements.

by Anonymousreply 28December 10, 2023 8:05 PM

Retailers for youths (like Urban Outfitters) are always stocked with band t-shirts, and it looks like UO has much Nirvana merch. Chances are many teens in general are wearing these things.

by Anonymousreply 29December 10, 2023 8:05 PM

It's just the style, idiot OP.

by Anonymousreply 30December 10, 2023 8:09 PM

[quote]especially grudge

r28 It's "grunge" baby, lol. Music streaming platforms have made it easier for older/90s music to be discovered amongst Gen Z in general. That's probably why OP is seeing this more.

That said, I have a Nirvana shirt, but it's because I actually like the band. A lot of these Gen Z kids of all races are just following fashion trends, though. Many of them probably don't even know how Nirvana is related to The Foo Fighters.

by Anonymousreply 31December 10, 2023 8:10 PM

R31 Bro I personally have a little 17 yr old cousin who has a Nirvana t-shirt. He only listens to hip hop and maybe some top 40. Yes he knows who Nirvana is but the music he does not listen to.

by Anonymousreply 32December 10, 2023 8:13 PM

Video games also helped to popularize grunge with Black youth, specifically GTA: San Andreas. Good times.

[quote]grudge

LOL. Who is this Teacake clown?

by Anonymousreply 34December 10, 2023 9:02 PM

R34 I meant grunge lol. Hi there. How are you. Are your legs heavy. They must be from carrying so much weight cunt.

by Anonymousreply 35December 10, 2023 9:04 PM

Btw my iPhone autotype grunge to grudge.

by Anonymousreply 36December 10, 2023 9:04 PM

Some of them might like NIrvana.

The shirts are sold at Target and Walmart now so they might just be shirts they like or were gifted and wear without really even knowing who the band was.

by Anonymousreply 37December 10, 2023 9:11 PM

R37 I wonder if the makers of that shirt have to pay the Cobain’s estate and/or the label Nirvana was on you for likeness legality. I would guess not.

by Anonymousreply 38December 10, 2023 9:20 PM

When I was in high school in the late 90s everyone wore The Doors shirts. Even if they didn't like the band. I wonder if it's a bit like that.

But Nirvana is also a great band. And Cobain is probably the one rock star who everyone knows, young and old. He's just as famous with younger Gen Z as he is with Boomer's (whose kids most likely loved Nirvana).

by Anonymousreply 39December 10, 2023 9:25 PM

[quote]Why Do So Many Young Blacks Kids Wear Nirvana T-Shirts?

Their Hanson t-shirts are in the wash.

by Anonymousreply 40December 10, 2023 9:27 PM

R39 You hit it on the nail. 👏

by Anonymousreply 41December 10, 2023 9:52 PM

It's kind of like emo kids wearing heavy metal t shirts in the early 2000s despite listening to bands like Bullet For My Valentine and Hawthorne Heights, not Megadeth or Cannibal Corpse.

by Anonymousreply 42December 10, 2023 10:03 PM

This is like asking why the largest consumers of 90s gangsta rap were suburban White guys. Counter culturalism is just fun. That's the answer.

There was nothing more satisfying than blasting Fuck Tha Police by N.W.A on their way to lacrosse practice.

by Anonymousreply 43December 10, 2023 10:23 PM

R37 of course they have to pay. Unless it is total counterfeit crap. I think Target and Walmart avoid counterfeit goods.

by Anonymousreply 44December 10, 2023 10:26 PM

[quote] They probably don’t even listen to grudge.

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 45December 10, 2023 10:36 PM

R43 What’s even more ironic is 2/3 of them of Magas today.

by Anonymousreply 46December 10, 2023 11:10 PM

2/3 of them are* Magas. Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 47December 10, 2023 11:11 PM

A lot of white suburban kids are not rich.

by Anonymousreply 48December 11, 2023 3:27 AM

Whatever the case, stranger combinations have certainly happened. I assure you.

by Anonymousreply 49December 11, 2023 5:50 AM

Fuck off, OP. If the white teenagers can wear all those Neil Carter and Florida Evans t-shirts all the time, let the negros have their fun.

by Anonymousreply 50December 11, 2023 6:03 AM

Now I want a Florida Evans shirt!
