Weird TV shows you liked

Father Dowling Mysteries-Tom Bosley as a priest who solves crimes with his nun sidekick played by Tracy Nelson. Very werid premise, but I liked it.

Sisters-NBC drama had great acting, but weird storylines like Alex's plastic surgeon husband being a crossdresser, Georgie's husband having a singing career that consisted of him singing in bathrobe and baseball cap, Alex having a talk show etc.

Picket Fences-Another 90s show with a bunch of weird storylines like Marlee Maitlin playing a bank robber turned mayor of the town, I think Zela Rubeinstein's character was written off as a falling into a freezer, cow somehow having a human baby

I loved Sisters, OP! I wish I could find somewhere to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 1February 12, 2023 11:00 PM

I also liked Sisters

by Anonymousreply 2February 12, 2023 11:03 PM

Twin Peaks is still probably the weirdest thing ever put on network TV and it's my favorite show of all time.

Also a big fan of some of its spiritual successors like X-Files, Lost and Stranger Things.

by Anonymousreply 3February 12, 2023 11:04 PM

I loved Picket Fences (did a rewatch a few years ago), liked Father Dowling, and just recently started Sisters for the first time.

'All That Glitters" -- a syndicated satire by Norman Lear where women are in charge of the world, corporations, etc. and men are the hausfraus.

It starred Lois Nettleton, Anita Gillette, Linda Gray, and Jessica Walter (!) and featured the always-welcome Gary Sandy as a male secretary who was sexually harassed by corporate executives.

Too weird for TV, and by then women's roles were changing anyway.

I was a kid in the 80s and a teen in the 90s, and I gobbled up anything on television. Night Flight, USA Up All Night had the best weird, obscure shows and movies. MTV had a swath of original non-video programming like Beavis and Butthead, Dead at 21, Liquid Television, all the fucking WEIRD VIDEOS they would play late at night. Also certain videos that they would only play late at night, like didn't Madonna's "Justify My Love" get that treatment? Also, all the REALLY WEIRD videos on THE BOX!

"The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" with Blair Brown.

"The Popcorn Kid"- Ran for only a few episodes in the spring of 1987 on CBS on Friday night. Kind of like "Are You Being Served?" but set in an old movie theater. The main kid thought working there would help him get into the movie industry. In the last episode, they were having an Ed Asner film festival.

"The Charmings"- Started out on Friday night on ABC during the spring and summer of 1987. It was taken off and retooled then brought back, but I lost track (and interest). Silly little show about Snow White, the prince, and the evil queen somehow being transported to the real world. I liked it very much, but then, I like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". I hoped they would have a hot guy playing the prince, but I was disappointed.

"Moon Over Miami"- Billy Campbell 🥵 as a private detective in the great city of Miami, running his agency out of an old art deco restaurant (or something). He had a Cuban guy as a bodyguard and a Cuban chick as his receptionist. Ally Walker (before "Profiler") was an amnesiac who hired Campbell to find out who she was. She ended up sticking around to help on cases and as Campbell's "love interest". It tried to be like one of those old "will they/won't they" type movies from the 1930s and 1940s, showing contrast between the easy-going Cuban couple and the bickering Campbell and Walker. It ran for half a season on ABC in the fall of 1993. The building used for exterior shots was the same one used for "The Golden Palace".

"PSI Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal"- Hosted by Dan Aykroyd, it was kind of a Canadian version of "The X-Files". Each hour episode was divided into two separate "case files" as a team of investigators interviewed people with claims of ghosts, demons aliens, etc. A little silly, but good if you're into that kind of thing. Ryan Gosling was in the pilot as a teenager claiming to have been abducted by aliens. I watched it for a hot actor named Paul Miller. Thick, black wavy hair, blue eyes, square jaw, and a deep voice that would make me curl my toes. Jesus, I thought he was hot! He's now a hot Daddy playing the mayor on "The Good Witch". He was my introduction to Canadian men and television. I only watched the first season (1996-1997), then they killed off Paul's character in the season finale!

"Remember WENN"- Created by Rupert Holmes of "The Pina Colada Song" fame, it was AMC's first endeavor in original programming (well before "The Walking Dead"). Remember when they used to show old movies? A short feel-good sitcom set in a small town radio station in the days before World War II. No one of interest in the main cast that I can recall. The original station manager was hot in a big, masculine Daddy kind of way. (He got shipped off on a mission for special forces mid way through the show's run.) There was a queen playing the main male voice actor, trying hard to both come off as a philandering Clark Gable/ Errol Flynn type and not light the set on fire with his flames. Betty Buckley guest starred as the widow of the station owner. Lots of vintage clothes, hairstyles, and props. Old time, corny sense of humor. It had its moments, but mostly just a comforting, cozy kind of show in the vein of "A Christmas Story". Ran for a few seasons in the late 1990s (I first noticed it in 1996.). Forgotten now, I haven't seen it anywhere in years and my video tapes were lost.

by Anonymousreply 61February 13, 2023 2:04 PM

Forgot to mention, Holmes also wrote nearly every episode of "WENN".

by Anonymousreply 62February 13, 2023 2:13 PM
"The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" with Blair Brown.

With John Glover in a recurring role as her Cousin Mike from Bawlmore. He nailed that accent. Growing up in Maryland, it endeared me to that show. Plus Blair Brown was sublime.

by Anonymousreply 63February 13, 2023 3:18 PM

Speaking of Remember WENN, AMC also had a show set at an old Hollywood movie studio called The Lot. It was pretty good, they even had an episode about a gay actor who was pressured to get married by the studio

BBC3's series: "In the Flesh" about zombies, which aired 2013-14. It got cancelled due to the massive budget cuts the BBC faced that year. It's unfortunate that they couldn't have given the showt at least three more episodes to wrap things up; but it just got chopped without resolution.
From wiki: The show, set in the fictional village of Roarton, Lancashire depicts life several years after "The Rising." This period, in (fictional) 2010, was a time when thousands of people who had died in 2009 suddenly re-animated as mindless, homicidal, brain-eating zombies world-wide. However, by the time of the series, normality has begun to return. A full-fledged zombie apocalypse has long since been prevented by armed resistance from the living, especially from armed local militias who patrolled their communities and actively hunted the re-animated. Meanwhile, a scientific solution for the zombie phenomenon has been found, with the development of a medication to restore consciousness to the undead, allowing them to remember their time alive and who they once were. The surviving undead, not killed by the militias, have been rounded up, forcibly medicated, and entered in a government rehabilitation programme in a plan to reintroduce them to society.

The drama centers around zombie protagonist-twink "Kieran Walker," played by Luke Newberry. His love is the charismatic "Simon Monroe," played by Emmett J. Scanlan. Simon is connected to the Undead Liberation Army and is one of the 12 disciples of the mysterious Undead Prophet.

MTV's cheap and trashy daily soap opera, "Spyder Games."

It had good enough ratings to warrant a Season 2, but right as Season 1 was ending, 9/11 happened, and by early 2002, MTV would decide to get out scripted television (the popular "Undressed" would get cancelled as well) and go full steam ahead with reality shows.

Molly Dodd was also one of my favorites. I loved the music. I also liked Soap. Recently Hulu was showing Bunheads which came out in 2012 and was one season. Great show and funny. It is about a Las Vegas showgirl who hastily marries a guy who lives in a small town with his mother. The guy dies the day after she marries him and is stuck in this small town. Her mother-in-law owns a ballet studio and ropes the women into teaching classes. The show has a lot of dancing and it is fun to watch.

People have mentioned “Milennium”, which I loved, but if we’re talking about X-Files adjacent shows, I really liked The Lone Gunmen - possibly because I’m from Vancouver and am a colossal techie nerd. it had great, self-deprecating humour! (The Lone Gunmen were side characters on the X-Files, and were always a highlight, imo.)

Also, piping cold tea alert: in the early ‘90s, when we were in our early twenties, a friend of mine used to work parties (you know - as a prostitution whore?) On more than one occasion, she and another friend of mine were hired by Chris Carter - along with other girls - and were instructed to dress like teenage cheerleaders, basically: pigtails, short slutty skirts… he was really into the high school girl fantasy.

R122 I'm loving the Molly love here too.

I honestly could not, sitting in my chair today, look back and tell you a particular storyline, per se, it wasn't that kind of show. But as the kids say nowaways, Molly was a "vibe." It felt real, in terms of some of the weird but wonderful awkwardness that can happen when you're trying to establish your own life, or when you're in the dating scene.

I was the gay nerd from hell who barely survived bullying and a suicide attempt in my senior year, and while all the local dirtbagerati were spending graduation night drinking Jim Beam out of Pepsi bottles and celebrating their impending wage slave initiations, I was in the basement watching the first (or second?) episode of Molly, dreaming of escaping my dreary surroundings for NYC and having a fabulous studio and quirky but hot boyfriend. Never quite made it to NYC but did make it to Chicago, with plenty of quirky apartments and hot men.

Better off Ted. It was a quirky comedy that many didn’t seem to get.

by Anonymousreply 129February 14, 2023 4:14 PM

As I recall, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd was just a evening version of a redux Ryan’s Hope with Blair Brown as a down market stand in for Kate Mulgrew’s Mary Ryan, and whose shadow she has remained in her whole working life.

KINGS - NBC 2009 .. Really loved this show. It probably should have been on cable. From wiki:
Kings is set in the fictional Kingdom of Gilboa, a modern absolute monarchy. Gilboa is ruled by King Silas Benjamin, who originally formed the United Kingdom two decades before from the three warring countries of Gilboa, Carmel, and Selah. He believes that he has been divinely anointed king, and he often cites the day when a swarm of monarch butterflies once landed on his head in the form of "a living crown" which called upon him to form the Monarchy and Kingdom.

This video montage is heavy on Sebastian Stan's character, Jonathan "Jack" Benjamin – crown prince of Gilboa, a counterpart to the biblical Jonathan. Secretly gay.

Second Chance/Boys will be Boys 1987/1988 fox sitcom starring Matthew Perry

Second Chance is an American sitcom aired on Fox from September 26 to November 28, 1987. The series was then revamped under the new title Boys Will Be Boys, and ran in the new format from January 16 to May 14, 1988.

In its original format, the show starred Kiel Martin as Charles Russell, a deceased man, and Matthew Perry as his younger self, who is nicknamed Chazz. On July 29, 2011, Charles dies in a hovercraft accident, and his soul is promptly sent to the high spiritual palace of Saint Peter (Joseph Maher). It is there that Saint Peter determines that Charles is too good for hell but not good enough to get into heaven; therefore, Charles is sent back to Earth in the year 1987, to re-join his life during the teenage years in order to help himself, through the younger Chazz, make more moral choices.

After a little over a month off the air, the series returned in January 1988 under a new title, Boys Will Be Boys. In this revamp, the supernatural element was dropped, causing Kiel Martin and Joseph Maher to exit the cast. As the new title implied, the format now revolved solely around the antics of Chazz, Booch and Eugene.

In the opening scene for the pilot, as a throwaway joke, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is shown being judged after his death, with the date given as July 29, 2011. In the year after the Berlin discotheque bombing and the U.S. response, the 1987 pilot was playing off Gaddafi's prominent negative perception by the American public. Twenty-four years later, by coincidence, Gaddafi's death (on October 20, 2011) occurred within three months of the "predicted" date and was from the same cause (multiple gunshot wounds).

The short lived series Maximum Bob. Nothing else has captured the dumpster fire that is Florida like this. The humor was pretty ahead of it’s time.

Maximum Bob is an American comedy-drama television series that aired on ABC from August 4 until September 15, 1998.[2] Starring Beau Bridges, the show was based on Elmore Leonard's 1991 novel of the same name.

The series centered on Bob Gibbs (played by Bridges), an ultra right-wing judge known for giving the maximum sentence to defendants. Other characters included the judge's psychic wife Leanne (Kiersten Warren) who channels the spirit of a young slave girl named Wanda Grace (Rae'Ven Larrymore Kelly); a widower sheriff with a knack for ballroom dancing; and Kathy Baker, a comely spitfire public defender (Liz Vassey) from Miami. The storylines served mainly to introduce the cast of eccentric characters, and were set in the fictional backwoods Florida town of Deepwater.

Judge Gibbs' young wife performed in a mermaid show until she nearly lost her life to an alligator, after which she abruptly retired from the business and can no longer even go in her swimming pool. Baker comes to Deepwater on a case and becomes a romantic target for the local sheriff, as well as a potential conquest for the always lustful judge. The show also includes a family of inbred, myopic, dysfunctional people with a criminal bent.
“Love, Sidney” starring Tony Randall who was besties with a 8 year old girl and her single mom.

Sidney's huge pre-war apartment was also another star of the series.

Tony’s co-star was Swoozie Kurtz, this was long before she became anorexic. When Swoozie was on 'Mike & Molly' she looked like the walking dead.

R233 I remember they used to air that late at night here in New England, but I don't care for martial arts so never watched it. But I recall coming across it and seeing TV promos.

Just looked it up online. I guess it had a pretty good run: 4 seasons, 88 episodes. Today, that would be like 8 seasons' worth.
Sewing with Nancy, because we couldn't stop laughing at her.

Nancy Zieman had Bell's Palsy for most of her life, that's nothing to joke about. I know people who worked for the NYC pattern company she designed for, no one had anything bad to say about this woman. I know someone who was recently diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, there's nothing funny about this disorder.

Nancy also dealt with two types of cancer, bone and breast cancer, at the same time. Nancy died in 2017.

I just started [italic]Yellowjackets[/italic], which might fulfill my need for a weird series. Dismissing it as just another teen-girl series, I ignored it until I subscribed to Showtime as a bolt-on. I truly did not recognize Christina Ricci until I read an episode recap online. It seems to be [italic]Lord of the Flies[/italic] but with girls with effective past/present splicing..

r93 If you thought Nancy was weird(I did not) you should take a gander on YouTube for the series of videos with George W. Trippon, entitled "Sew What's New." Mr. Trippon is a real hoot, very Hollywood movies-adjacent BITD with tons of gossip. He sewed women's clothes, never saw him work on anything for men.

I kinda' liked Nancy Zieman, whether she was going solo or had on one of her seemingly-endless horde of co-hosts. My real girl though was Eleanor Burns, owner of a quilt supply company and hostess of a long series of quilt making videos called "Quilt In A Day"(the first book I bought from her didn't live up to its name, it took me TWO days to make a quilt 😁) Just from the way she talked on camera made you think she was a kindergarten teacher, which was part of her charm, at least for me. Her techniques and books were foolproof ways to complete a quilt in record time.

R229. Compared to the slaughterhouse known as Cabot Cove? Or to the Snoop Sisters? Or Commissioner McMillian’s nosey wife? Not weird.

The Lives We Live.

In the early 80s this daytime talk show had three women who were supposed to be friends, who would ask some expert over to one of their homes to discuss some important issue.

Sort of a reality show, but sort of not because the houses were clearly sets. Not sure how real it was.

On one episode they had a homosexual. The New York Jews was totally cool with him, but the Connecticut WASP had difficulty accepting him.

Does anyone else remember this show?
