Why Are There So Many Far-Right Commentators Coming Out of Canada

I know American Right-wingers were taking aim at that country. Mark Steyn, Gavin McInnes, the founder of the Proud Boys, is Canadian, too, as is Jordan Peterson, Stefan Molyneux, Karen Straughan, Gad Saad, Ezra Levant, Lauren Southern, Steven Crowder, Roaming Millennial, The Rebel Media, etc. A ton of white nationalism.

Gad Saad is not far right.

Because of Mr Buttock-Man PM.

Sure, Jan. Check out his social media sometime.

Canada has somehow had an undeservedly sunny reputation worldwide for a very long time. We are "nice" "peaceful" etc etc.

It's the same as anywhere else here, with the main difference being the amazingly tiny population relative to landmass.

by Anonymousreply 4February 16, 2023 5:38 PM

Isn't Alberta a bit like little Texas for right wing loons? So I'm told, got relatives over there, no idea myself.

by Anonymousreply 5February 16, 2023 5:41 PM

Immigration from Asia has changed Canada immensely over the past few decades so that explains the nativism.

by Anonymousreply 6February 16, 2023 5:42 PM

I've traveled in Canada a lot and I love the country and its people.

They do have a right wing element just as we have in the US. Some areas are particularly conservative. I saw many anti abortion signs in Nova Scotia. There is a strong Catholic element as well, religion driving some conservatize views.

Why refer to him as "Mr. Buttock-Man PM"?

by Anonymousreply 8February 17, 2023 1:45 AM

I've met even progressive Canadians who will straight up argue that Trudeau's blackface wasn't racist. I agree with R4 that the "nice" reputation is unearned.

Quebec is not especially liberal either outside of Montreal.

I hear Canada also produced a crowd of comedians.

by Anonymousreply 13February 17, 2023 2:17 AM

I've said this before on DL but my SIL is a dual citizen of Canada and the US but more "Canadian" than American and she loved Trump and is a major conspiracy theorist. My brother also said he saw lots of confederate flags while living up there.

by Anonymousreply 14February 17, 2023 2:21 AM

Jordan Peterson is not far right. Where are you getting this nonsense from?

by Anonymousreply 15February 17, 2023 4:00 AM

But he is on the right, classic Liberalism with which he self identifies is aligned with Conservatism, which pegs him on the political right. As to how far to the right that is, is open to national interpretation of political leanings, he's probably left wing in the US!

by Anonymousreply 16February 17, 2023 6:27 PM

Maybe Jordan is just regular right-wing, but the issue is that he's so unbalanced he ends up sounding far-right.

by Anonymousreply 17February 18, 2023 12:47 PM

I know. So many. Go back to Canada. Stop dictating on what happens in America, please.

Ted Cruz is half-Canadian.

The funders of the far-right extremist movement are not interested in toppling democracy *only* in the United States.

Why the Canadian pundits are successful in the U.S. likely boils down to it's easier to sell them as impartial but concerned outsiders who gradually see the light (slow boil progression from self-described leftist or moderate to extreme right). This allows them to gain credibility and a wide audience they are able to indoctrinate while proclaiming they definitely aren't (insert accurate criticism/description here).

R24, there's a sale on tin foil at CVS. Hurry before the looters get there.

by Anonymousreply 25February 19, 2023 6:27 AM

I believe that places that are/were historically white have elements of Nationalism when other ethnic groups move into their area.
