Watching this series for the third time and I remain puzzled by Jane. Why did they hire an actress who always looks like she smells a rotten corpse? You can't tell if she's smiling or frowning (and yes, I know she's Sarah Silverman's sister- that's irrelevant). Is Jane supposed to be a good person? Is she laughing behind Val's back? Just an odd choice of casting but intriguing at the same time.
Jane from "The Comeback" : What's Her Deal?

Isn't she an award winning SERIOUS documentarian? It's the contrast, I believe, that's so comedic.

Jane is a professional documentary maker. She doesn't become emotionally involved in her subjects.
Btw who was in her flat in the final epiosde?

This scene between Valerie and Jane just killed me.
Watch Lisa Kudrow's tiny transitions. And Laura's reaction shot in the mirror.

Exactly, R4. That scene shows you everything you need to know about the character Jane. Has OP seen season two? I'm not sure what you're confused by. She's a person (we find out later is a lesbian) who has a lot of ambivalence about working on a reality show, but clearly is torn between her empathy for Valerie and her irritation with her. It's a very rich, interesting characer, played spot-on by Laura Silverman.

That scene in R4 my darlings,is what used to be called "acting" . Kudrow rips your heart out with a few looks and inflections of her voice.

I LOVED this show...

Kudrow is a great actor and an improvisational comedic genius. She's that rare example, of an actor whose intelligence actually enhances her brilliance.
For me, personally, this was my favorite television series out of any series I've ever seen.

Ron, the wheelchair-bound showrunner, is another strange but intriguing character. I wonder if he is based on someone real.

This brilliant series deserved to run forever. Thanks for the reminder OP.

I agree, R8. Her performance as Valerie Cherish is one of the greatest ever. I know—MARY!—but I believe it.

R9, Ron's back story as described in the show was that he was once a stuntman who got paralyzed and the studio cynically bought him off by making him a producer on tv shows.

I agree R10 - it deserved to run forever, but I am glad it didn't. It's one of those brilliant series that gave us just the right amount. And the way the second series ended by breaking the fourth wall was absolutely perfect.
It might be time for a revisit.

edit to add - revisit meaning rewatch.
I didn't mean revival. I don't think it would work without Robert Michael Morris - Mickey - who died a few years back.

r4 Kudrow's acting in that scene is phenomenal. Heartbreaking.

For some reason, I always remember Mickey delivering the line, "Would you like to try my Chantico drinking chocolate?," and Valerie's typical reaction. I couldn't tell you why. Maybe it's because it was so much in character for both of them. She was so tightly wound and walking that tightrope all the time between the self-awareness trying to break through and her tamping it down for her own survival.

R3 — I think the series went to Jane’s very cool canyon home and didn’t she have an Oscar?
R4 — That scene devastated me when I first saw it and I think Jane’s reflected emotion always kept me positive about her character. When Val says she couldn’t be in the picture after all her devotion to the team…I mean, just brilliant acting. I think all of Louis-Dreyfus’s Veep awards were deserved but what a shame it kept edging out Kudrow’s whole-cloth originality. JLD had the writing but LK made the character unforgettable from the inside out.

LK had the writing, too, R17. In fact, "The Comeback" is superior to "Veep" with the cleverness of the writing.

For the first season of "The Comeback," Kudrow lost to Louis-Dreyfuss not for "Veep," but for "The Old Adventures of New Christine."

Wait, flip that, for "The NEW Adventures of OLD Christine."

I don't need to SEE THAT!

I've watched both seasons multiple times and one thing I like about the first season is the behind the scenes of a sitcom stuff. I always find that shit so fascinating. The table reads. The young actors being forewarned that their lives will never be the same after the first episode airs. The whole setting is cool. Those of us who don't work in the industry forget that these people essentially work in giant warehouses. Warehouses with nice accommodations, of course. And of course Valerie's dressing room is the furthest away from the set!

She was using the Oscar as a doorstop!
