by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 10, 2023 9:22 PM |
Fixed wing drones can fly thousands of miles. They are basically unmanned planes. Quadcopters can only stay in the air for about 30 minutes. Both are considered aircraft. I wish they would just say what it was. If they could tell it was unmanned, then they were close enough to identify what type of aircraft it was.

The Chinese are:
1. Sending a message. Get off our turf. ie. Taiwan
2. They're testing US air defence capabilities.
3. They're seeing what the US response is to these things. How long it takes for US to respond. What the command structure is. etc. ie the first one wasn't shot down until the east coast, this one was shot down in the western USA.
4. They're testing new technology. We don't know what technology is on those things. What are they looking at. How are the communicating back to Beijing.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | February 11, 2023 4:55 PM |
I'm sorry, but I'm not buying any "cover story" the US govt. is trying to feed us. After the one from a week ago, the subsequent excuse that they were afraid to shoot it down because of potential danger to people on the ground. That is a minuscule risk, considering this balloon was over plenty of uninhabited areas across the northern states. There was something more going on. Possible scenario: the US did contact CCP about the balloon and were given an ultimatum eg: "if you shoot it down, we will do x y and z." So the risk was not about the immediate effect of shooting it down, but the consequences stated by CCP. We are in high stakes times right now.

by Anonymous | reply 122 | February 12, 2023 7:19 AM |
Apparently the two silver cylindrical objects were balloons. Boring, but that's what's being reported. Very strange that early briefings refused to call them as such.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | February 12, 2023 7:36 AM |
Most defense radar use Doppler technology. Normally they tune out low Doppler gates so they don't pick up large slow moving birds or even flocks f birds. A balloon and what ever these other two objects are are slow moving and not all that large so they wouldn't show up. I suspect they have re-tuned the radar to see those lower speed targets. There are also reports of similar targets in the past. They save all the radar from the past and it is likely they reprocessed those archived files with the re-tuned Doppler gates and by golly there were the similar targets.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | February 12, 2023 7:57 AM |

CNN: The US military does not have new information on the country of origin or the physical or mechanical properties of the three objects downed over North America in the past three days, Gen. Glen VanHerck, the commander of the US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, told reporters Sunday.
“I'm not going to categorize them as balloons. We're calling them objects for a reason,” VanHerck said when asked about the physical characteristics of the objects.
“I'm not able to categorize how they stay aloft. It could be a gaseous type of balloon inside a structure or it could be some type of a propulsion system. But clearly, they're -- they're able to stay aloft,” he added.
VanHerck stressed that officials do not know the country of origin of the objects downed in recent days, distinguishing it from the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that the US military shot down off the coast of South Carolina last week.
“I would be hesitant and urge you not to attribute it to any specific country. We don't know,” VanHerck said.

The U.S. military shot down another high-altitude object Sunday, reports CNN — this one flying
"The operation marks the third day in a row that an unidentified object was shot down over North American airspace." Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan said Sunday that the operation to down the object over Lake Huron was carried out by pilots from the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard.... The object was flying at 20,000 feet over Michigan's Upper Peninsula and was about to go over Lake Huron when it was neutralized, a senior administration official told CNN on Sunday.
The object was "octagonal" with strings hanging off and no discernable payload, according to the official and another source briefed on the matter. While the U.S. has no indication that the object had surveillance capabilities, that has not been ruled out yet.
Why have so many flying objects been spotted in the last week? The Washington Post says the Chinese spy balloon and subsequently-spotted objects "have changed how analysts receive and interpret information from radars and sensors, a U.S. official said Saturday." The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said that sensory equipment absorbs a lot of raw data, and filters are used so humans and machines can make sense of what is collected. But that process always runs the risk of leaving out something important, the official said.
"We basically opened the filters," the official added, much like a car buyer unchecking boxes on a website to broaden the parameters of what can be searched. That change does not yet fully answer what is going on, the official cautioned, and whether stepping back to look at more data is yielding more hits — or if these latest incursions are part of a more deliberate action by an unknown country or adversary....
The official said the current U.S. assessment is the objects are not military threats.

This raises questions for top military brass and US spy agencies as well as for the potential safety of civilian aviation. And it creates an information vacuum that Republicans are again using to question President Joe Biden’s leadership."

by Anonymous | reply 210 | February 13, 2023 3:19 PM |
[quote] Our government knows a lot more than they let on.
The confused changing stories argue otherwise.
The Biden administration dangerously mishandled China’s now-famous, first recent high-flying “object” over America. Confronted Friday, again off Alaska, with a second unidentified object; Saturday with a third, over Canada; and Sunday a fourth, over landlocked Lake Huron, President Joe Biden reacted very differently, perhaps having learned his lesson.
Or maybe the last three shoot-downs merely underline his helter-skelter thinking. Not all the facts of these four incidents are yet available. The administration’s constantly changing excuses and storyline complicate understanding, let alone correcting, its mistakes.
The worst mistake came at the outset, Jan. 28, when NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command) detected a balloon near the Aleutian Islands. NORAD’s commander, Gen. Glen VanHerck, said Feb. 6, “It was my assessment that this balloon did not present a physical or military threat to North America.”
Days into the controversy, the Pentagon justified not shooting the first balloon down in the waters off Alaska because of the difficulty of recovering the payload for analysis. This rationale is either knowingly false or disingenuous — and constitutes yet another posterior-covering reversal, given Gen. VanHerck’s confession that he initially saw no threat.
he Bering Sea is indeed cold and deep, but apparently not so cold and deep that the second “object” could escape being shot down Feb. 10, perhaps closer to Alaska’s shores, with recovery operations now underway.
Finally, the administration has said repeatedly it did not want to destroy the first balloon over land to avoid risks to innocent civilians. Yet it did just that over the weekend, over the Yukon and Lake Huron.

Here's what we now know about the objects, per CNN:
Off the coast of northern Alaska: It was described as a metallic object that broke into several pieces when it impacted the sea ice, according to multiple US officials. That suggests it may have had some sort of structure to it, but officials won't know for sure until the object is recovered.
Over Lake Huron: The object shot down over Lake Huron was “octagonal” in shape with strings hanging off and no discernible payload, according to a senior administration official. It was traveling at 20,000 feet when it was shot down, the Pentagon said Sunday.
Over northern Canada: The object shot down over the Yukon territory in Canada appeared to be a balloon with a metal payload hanging underneath. The object was traveling at 40,000 feet. It was described as a “cylindrical object” smaller than the Chinese surveillance balloon that was downed off the coast of South Carolina one week earlier.
Multiple officials said the objects shot down in Alaska and over Canada were believed to have had payloads, meaning that something is being carried by the object.

A DJI Inspire 2 can unofficially fly up to 16,000 feet. Usually that means they can fly even higher. The are expensive though, around 8,000 or more depending on the model or camera you buy. DJI makes the best drones you can buy. Think of them as the Apple of the drone industry. American drone makes such by comparison. 70% of the drones sold in the U.S. are made by this Chinese company. Police departments were buying these until congress passed a stupid law banning DJI form being use by government agencies. But you can buy them legally as a regular US citizen. Mostly for taking cinematic video. But also used for inspecting bridges, construction sites etc.
Legally, drones in the US are not allowed to fly over 400 feet above ground level. But if you are a drug smuggler that's probably not your concern. All drones sold in America as of last year 2022 are required to have remote ID. It's a computer chip that lets anyone track them, not just police. It's very simple to do, DJI makes a device called an Areoscope which not only tells you where the drone is in the sky, it also locates the pilot on the ground holding the remote. Many police departments have this as well. There is even a few apps out now on the iPhone that can do this.
I am not saying all the last 4 sighting were drones, but the one over Lake Huron probably was. It's too deep into Canadian territory to not have been spotted a spy balloon getting there. Flying over a lake to the US is a perfect way to move drugs unnoticed. In fact it's happened before. Usually the guys operating them lose control because they push it too far and the signal gets lost. Most US prisons and airports already have what's called Geofenicing, it's a red no fly zone that will disable a drones ability to fly overhead. Because guess what, drug delivery to a prison yard have been tried many, many times. Usually the guys buying those for drug transportation are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

The unidentified flying object shot down in Canadian airspace on Saturday appeared to be a “small, metallic balloon with a tethered payload below it,” according to a Pentagon memo sent to lawmakers on Monday and obtained by CNN.
