Dionne Warwick and Barbra Streisand sung his songs the best - true interpreters of his music.

I'm thinking yes. Marlene was no fool.

I've never seen anyone name Streisand as one of the quintessential Bacharach interpreters. Her version of "Alfie" and its parent album did little for her career.

What is the goddamn bell you have to answer for a partner?? Are they an invalid in a nursing home who was constantly ringing for assistance?
If it references a doorbell, well sorry, the doorbell’s still there and you still have to answer it. So there ISN’T one less bell.

[R59], his daughter Nikki did not have cerebral palsy. She had severe Asperger’s, and when a shrink asked her how she was going to take care of herself after her mother eventually died (Angie was VERY PROTECTIVE of her daughter… Burt not so much) she became fixated on Angie’s death (as people with Asperger’s do… another preoccupation of Nikki’s was earthquakes; she was in Tahiti during the 1994 Northridge quake and was FURIOUS to have missed it,) and her fear of being left without Angie there eventually drove her to suicide. When I knew her she was a drummer for an all-female band, dressed in men’s clothing and had a crew cut. And had terrible eyesight, as she was born extremely prematurely.

I’m a fan of the music but not the man. I read his memoir years ago and he came across as a sadistic son of a bitch boasting about all night recording sessions and the singers in tears from exhaustion until he got the take he wanted. He also was very cavalier about the women in his life and his song writing partners.

He sounds kind of detached, even cold, discussing his daughter’s suicide.
[quote] Nikki was one pound, 10 ounces at birth. You should know the deck is stacked against you then,” Bacharach said.
[quote] According to Bacharach, she grew up with emotional issues, which he later found out was an undiagnosed case of Asperger’s syndrome (the autism-spectrum disorder is a relatively new diagnosis).
[quote] “Nobody said she’s got Asperger’s or she’s got autism. (They said) she’s just got behavior things,” he said. But after suffering for so long, he never imagined she would actually kill herself.
[quote] “It’s like the boy who cried wolf. Somebody who says, ‘I can’t stand it. The helicopters are making too much noise and the gardeners and the blowers are making too much noise and if they don’t stop I’m going to kill myself. And you hear that enough and you know it’s never gonna happen and then one day she just goes and kills herself.”
[quote] “When she did kill herself she did it alone, Textbook 101. Bag over her head. Alone. Kind of brave I guess for somebody who was scared of so many things. And she left a note to me.”

Sad news. He wrote a boatload of songs. My favorite of his music isn't one that you readily hear mentioned: "Anyone Who Had a Heart." I vividly remember the 70s commercials Burt and Angie Dickinson made for "Martini & Rossi." They were a hip 70s couple.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | February 10, 2023 6:03 AM |
Wow.
[quote] Nikki was born three months prematurely weighing one pound, ten ounces and was not expected to live. It took many years, including a decade when Burt insisted she live at the Wilson Center, a clinic in Minnesota, before Nikki was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. She and Angie became increasingly close. “Theirs was a symbiotic relationship. For example, Nikki would take the pet mice Angie had bought her and kill them by throwing them against the wall. Then Angie would go out and buy some more.”
[quote] Nikki never forgave her father for her enforced incarceration, something that became clear in her final note. He’s never read it but wife Jane has so he’s aware of Nikki’s feelings. She had frequently threatened suicide, to a point where her parents weren’t taking them seriously. Then, on January 4, 2007, she put a bag over her head and inserted a tube that fed nitrous oxide into it. She was 40.

Not exactly. Jerry Butler recorded it first, though his version only ended up as an album track.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | February 10, 2023 9:43 AM |
It's funny how Dionne rags on those women but she doesn't shit talk Burt the same for giving songs to others. It was Burt who gave "Make It Easy on Yourself" to Jerry Butler, and Jerry was even given Dionne's performance as a demo. It was also Burt who gave "Wishin' and Hopin'" to Dusty Springfield in October 1963. He sensibly saw that as Scepter Records made it a b-side for Dionne Warwick, that it should have its chance as an A-Side for someone else. It could well have been Dusty's debut single. As it turned out, Dusty kept it as an album track until Philips U.S. decided to make it a single in summer '64, pretty much a year after Dionne released her version.
