Fig Newtons are some of the most abhorrent and grotesque excuses for "cookies" that I've ever had the displeasure of putting in my mouth. It feels like you're chewing sand from a refugee encampment in the Middle East wrapped in undercooked and poorly sweetened dough.

Why put yourself through the horror of eating kale when you could have collards?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 8, 2023 5:28 PM |
Why put yourself through the horror of eating kale, period? I ruined an entire pot of the most delicious chicken noodle soup by putting kale in at the end. It's something you should only do one bowl at a time, in case you don't like kale, as I found out I didn't.

Why are "Doubled-stuff" Oreos not doubled-stuff anymore? They are "singled-stuff"now!! BTW....I LOVE Fig Newtons. P.S. I've called the number on the package to complain, and I contacted a board member to bitch.

Fig Newtons™ are one of the few cookies I can eat "naked." No coffee or tea, ice cream, milk or anything else needed.
Can we just go back to simple eating, and not all the "tortured" foods we've been subjected to in the last decade or two? What the hell is wrong with simple roasts, broiled fish, steamed or sautéed vegetables and other foods that don't require a go-round in the Hadron Collider?

I still can't believe people willingly eat sushi. Let's call it what it is. RAW FISH. That's what seals eat!

Im guessing Fig Newtons are a processed version of a decadent treat our ancestors once ate and enjoyed. Processed foods last longer on the store shelves but are missing appealing tastes and even textures.

I remember reading books by American authors as a child and wondering what on earth a fig newton was. Yeah, that certainly wouldn't have been a favourite of mine as a kid either.
We have/had biscuits in my country colloquially called "squashed fly" biscuits, which are similarly disgusting. I believe they have them under other names elsewhere too:

Thanksgiving is a nice enough concept, but the meal (in almost any variation but the Jewish Xmas dinner at a Chinese restaurant) lies somewhere between barely edible and repulsive.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 8, 2023 9:27 PM |
Chicken anything.
For about 5 years now I have been avoiding chicken anything more and more.
It is just boring. Its flavor comes from what it's cooked in or coated with.
Oddly enough I do still like the egg drop soup at my local Chinese restaurant.
But I would never order a chicken dish in a restaurant ever again.

I do feel your pain OP. Sounds like torture. So sorry you must endure this abhorrent food. My condolences.
I wish there was something I could do to ease your pain.
Tell you what, next time you get a box or a package of these disgusting fig newtons, mail it off to me. I will dispose of it. That way, it will be half a world away and you won't ever have to think of it again.

At one place I worked, the office cafeteria kept an Otis S. cookie station in the check out lane. The chocolate chunk cookies were always snatched first but there always remained several oatmeal raisin cookies. I cannot tell you how many times I watched as people, eyes alight with anticipation and tongs at the ready, die a little inside when they realized they had picked up an oatmeal raisin. There was a quick glimmer of hope as they perused the other shelves, then defeated resignation. Some would settle for a chocolate-chocolate chunk if it was available, but I never saw anyone take the oatmeal raisins. You could probably fill an entire landfill with all the oatmeal raisin cookies tossed out the end of every day from such places.

r21 I can't imagine not liking chicken. I love to roast a whole chicken with the cavity stuffed with lemon, garlic or onion, and thyme. It has lots of flavor. I always buy a "good" chicken, not Perdue or the cheapest possible bird. I like Empire or something from Whole Foods. I like rotisserie chicken as well. It's my favorite meat-based dinner.

A fig, like a raisin and a date is a fruit that doesn't need any additional sugar when dried. A dried fig is utterly delicious. Because of their natural sugars plus the nutrients in their seeds, figs are avidly sought after by many different animals, birds and insects in the tropical forests and subtropical regions where they are native and were undoubtedly one of the main foods consumed by our primate ancestors in Africa. Fig Newtons are a more refined product, but health food stores often have more nutritious varieties with far less added sugar. I'm a fan, particularly of fig bars made with whole grains.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 9, 2023 10:13 PM |
I like fig newtons, but i love the whole grain ones you find sporadically in smaller grocery stores (usually ones that carry healthier food). I like the apricot ones the best.
And I really like graham crackers too. But the cinnamon-sugar ones are overpowering.
I like chocolate as well, but i don't go nuts for it. i've found most people like sweets, candy and chocolate far more than I do. Like last night, one of the mini dark chocolate peanut butter cups from TJ's was perfect/enough. And the choice between pancakes or waffles over omelettes...i'm more of a savory person and will choose omelettes/eggs any time over the sweet stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 9, 2023 10:22 PM |
R43 and R48 that is interesting, because I keep saying to people that I feel addicted to chocolate but that I don't really like it that much. I just can't stop eating it when I get on a loop (which is why I now don't eat it at all). I'm actually a savoury person more than a sweet, but I can stop eating savoury food - with sweet I struggle. I thought it was just the sugar, but the information at R48 is very interesting.

Here's a photo of another brand.
Also, just to be clear, it's not a "cake" in the way that most Americans would think of a cake, it's literally just dried, pressed figs with thinly sliced almonds.
You can usually find them at Whole Foods, or other high-end, or gourmet, grocery stores.

Does anyone remember those fig & coconut candies with a raw almond on top? They were sold at health food stores.
The fig and coconut mixture were shaped into a small, oblong bar (like a See's candy). There was a whole, white almond on top.
Nuts.com sells them and calls them "Coconut Holiday Dates."
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 10, 2023 12:14 AM |

Trader Joe's triple ginger cookies are completely overhyped and were a disappointment. They just don't have the ginger flavor I was hoping for. If you've ever tasted ginger root, it's intense. How do you call something "triple ginger" and there's no flavor.

I don't like garbanzo beans/chick peas. I don't the like consistency of them whole but do like hummus.
Chips Ahoy! used to be good (I worked for Nabisco from 89-99). For me, there's too many chocolate chips and not enough cookie. I do like oatmeal raisin cookies. So you can get good quality fig cookies.

I grew up in a sort of health food-y household, R97, and my sisters and myself craved and loved nothing more than Kraft singles. About once every 1-2 years our mum would give in to our begging and buy us a pack and I remember sitting on the kitchen floor ripping those things open and devouring them. They're different now, at least in Canada. Thinner, and the texture is not the same, it's sticky and slightly mealy. The Swiss variety still has the old texture and every year or so i buy some and eat them straight out of the package like the shameless little pig I am.

Candied yams are gross.

R122 I bought some last year (in the US) and they were the same. So sticky I could barely handle them and almost gritty, or mealy as you said.
I switched to Velveeta brand and it tastes the way Kraft used to.

I used to feed my cat Kraft singles, now he won't even eat them

Kraft singles are technically congealed cheese sauce rather than cheese, which is probably what makes them gritty.
It's like chilling a very thick batch of Mornay Sauce and selling individual slices of it. Industrial ultra-processed Mornay Sauce, though.

Having worked for years as a cook, here's my deeply unpopular opinion: eggs are fucking disgusting. Heart disease and gastroenteritis conveniently packaged in a shit-smeared shell. I'll be glad when I never have to deal with them again.
Likewise oysters. If I want a mouthful of salty gloop I'll suck a dick.

Add mayonnaise to the salty gloop list.

r133 And hollandaise sauce. What a disgusting and rank culinary idea.

You know what would make mayonnaise even better? Heat it up! Glop it on steak and add an upcharge!

r133 Ay caramba! With Hollandaise sauce you're halfway to Béarnaise, the best thing to happen to a steak(and french fries as well)
