How do so many players get Wordl on the second guess?

It's just luck I guess. However I had good luck today (2/6) and got it on second try.

What was your starting guess, R1?

I got today's (2/6) answer on the third guess and started with the same word as usual, aisle.

Anybody else annoyed with today's word?

I start with STEAM so when the word was TASTY at some point in the last couple of months, I managed to get it on the 2nd try. However, I've only gotten it on the 2nd try 16 times out of 381 plays.

Only 11 times out of 236 games for me. Once on the first try. Just dumb luck in all instances.

Why would anyone be annoyed with a word in a word game, R3? And what's so vexing to you about this one?

There are Wordle Word of the Day Hints on line, OP. People cheat (If you want to call it cheating). You can google and get three hints. For instance a clue about the word's meaning, the letter it starts with, which vowels are used, etc. You can also just scroll down to the bottom of the hints page and get the word. Some people are so crazily competitive with figuring out the word in the least amount of tries and posting about it. Isn't the point of the puzzle the process of figuring the word out in 6 tries? It's not about being an alphabet psychic.

You can cheat by going into a new browser and playing the game to get the answer, then go back to your usual browser now that you already know the word.

OP, since you can't spell the name of the game, I'm surprised you can play it.

Only guessed on the second try twice, I have missed a few clues too.

Just luck. I often pick "water" as a starting word and was lucky for #2 a couple of times.

I've guessed it on the second try 16 out of 327 times, and that's usually due to luck. I have several different starting words I use and I switch them up from day to day. I try to start with a word that has at least three vowels and a couple of the more common consonants. But it's still mostly luck that I chose a good word first. Some of my start words are: AUDIO, SUITE, MEDIA, RADIO, CAUSE, NOISE and ROUSE.

My start word is MEATY. I like the word.

I got it on the second guess today! The bot still said my skill level was only 72 despite that I got the answer in two guesses and it took the bot 4. Wow, my score is now 7 times on the second guess.

Interesting, R10. For some reason, I always thought the name was "wordl". How strange. Is this one of those Mandela effect things? Or are you just a bitch?

The other day I started with TABLE and came up with no 'hits.' For some reason, the only word that occurred to me was SHIRK. And it turned out to be the word.

I stopped playing Wordl because I like Quordle much better.

Beware. A lot of streaks have ended or will be ending today. Strategy won it for me.

I thought I was going to get it in two today, and I got 5/6 letters right for the next 4 guesses. I gambled between two common possible words and got it on the final guess.

I just got today's Wordle on the second guess. I started off with the random word "ghost"

I always state with IRATE. If no letters match up then second try is COUGH. I’ve gotten it in 2 attempts 22 times.

What happened to R23 has happened to me so often I've given up doing it regularly. It was infuriating. Obviously, by the time you have four letters it's just dumb luck at what point you pick the correct fifth, if there are five alternatives.

I actually enjoy those scenarios R27. What I do is use all or as much as possible those likely letters in one guess to eliminate all the wrong ones.

After hundreds of games, somehow since creating this thread I've now arrived at the answer on the second guess twice in two weeks. I should create a thread about the lottery.

I got it on the first guess today.

R30, that really is just dumb luck, which is exactly what's needed to win lotteries -- go buy a ticket, quick!

I couldn't believe it, R31, and I just used the word on a whim because it was said in whatever youtube video I was watching at the time.

I always use the same first word -- audio -- because it has every vowel except E. Then I include E in my second guess because it's the most commonly used vowel in English. I've got it on the second guess very few times but have struck out after 6 tries very seldom too.

I've gotten the word in two guesses a number of times, and even once I got it in one guess!

I've gotten it in two guesses 20 times, but in six 29 times.

I also accidently cheated and got it in one guess once. I didn't know very much about Wordle, and figured it was an app. I downloaded it and eventually figured out the answer, but I heard people talking about the NYTimes wordle. I found the actual Wordle site and decided to reuse the word from the app, turns out it was the same word.

My one guess solution is a fraud.

R35, fraud requires intent to do wrong, which you didn't harbor (do I type like a lawyer?). Just don't forget that it's a 5 letter word & could be useful in your future Wordle endeavors.

I don't really try for second, I use two control words, and have had it on the 3rd 285/344 times. Using the same logic as Wheel of Fortune. Occasionally it takes a few more tries, but only once did I need all 6 tries.

I have an ethical dilemma. I was on attempt six today and I googled a word I wasn't sure was a word and it wasn't... but the word of the day popped up. Of course I said, of course, slaphead and sure enough.

Did I cheat? Because it's not like I did Scrabble word finder of anything. Fucking Wordle. I blame the NYT.

What are "two control words"?

It happens. I got it in two for one of the words last week. I got three correct letters in my first guess, two of which were in the correct position, with the third letter only having one logical place to go. The solution became pretty clear.

Similarly, I remember failing to the correct even after getting four letters in the correct position right off the bat. The problem was I didn't have the first letter, and there were numerous words it could be. I just didn't guess the right one and ran through five incorrect guesses. I think the trick there would have been to find a new word to put in that contained as many of the possible letters it could be and see if you could find the right one or eliminate some.

I managed it in two today. I usually get it in 3-4.

I started over again. I wouldn't have got beset that day. I was nowhere near close. Fucking killed a nice streak, too. Got it in two, this morning.

Today's the word was my usual starter word so I got it first guess!

I got it in two today. My starter word gave me 4 out of 5 letters all in the wrong order. Once I shuffled them around a few times the answer was pretty easy to guess. Scordle says there were 12 possible answers after my first guess, but only three of them looked like common English words to me.

It took me 5 guesses today. I was getting worried.

As for OP's question about getting it on "the second guess," I've gotten it on the second guess 2.7% of the time. I've also bombed out completely and not solved it 4% of the time.

Well, one tires of wordle salad easily.

Today is one of those days that, even if you start off with having four letters in the correct position (as I happened to do), you might still end up losing.

I got one letter on my first go today. My second guess could have been any of 868 words according to Scordle. It wasn't a great start, but I got it in four.

I usually get the word on the third or fourth attempt. Good starting words are AUDIO (for the vowels), STRAP or STRIP (for the most popular consonants), also LEAST, STEAL, STALE, or any combination of those letters are good starting words.

Today's word is meant to be a streak breaker. I got it in 6 though with some strategy involved.

R71, at least you got it. I count those words as wins—I got four letters right in the third guess, so it just came down to luck—just plain luck.

I hate it when there are so many possible options. I suppose there's a way to finesse that by using words that don't fit the pattern to try to suss out the missing letter, but I didn't try that. Instead, I used four separate words that all ended with the same four letters -- and none of them was the right one.

I actually did get in two today, but it's just luck due to the starter word I chose, and the positions I got. The fourth letter could only go one other place, and so solving it was easy after that.

I've been playing Wordle for a little over a year and have solved it in two guesses 32 times. I was very lucky with my starter word quite a few times.

I got it on the first try once. I used my favorite word that contains mostly vowels. No, not sharing but it's easy to find..

I got it on the first guess only once. Last Thanksgiving, I started with "feast." I was quite surprised when all the letters turned green.

Getting Wednesday's in two guesses only happened because I surprisingly got four of the letters with my starter word, and most importantly, got the rather odd letter in the fifth position right off the bat. Why I chose that word to start with? Can't really tell you. I don't think I've ever used it before.

I'm very pleased with Line 3!

For me, it is helpful knowing what letter combinations don't exist in English.

So just now (5/26) I got the word Line 4, but could as easily have been Line 3, but first chose the wrong letter between two possibilities.

According to my stats I've gotten Wordle on the second guess 10 times (out of 156 games played). But early on my stats were screwed up when I went back and forth between phone and computer to solve so I think I have perhaps another 4 or so. I got it on the first try one time, when I was using "Alien" as my starter word. My average solve is fewer than 4, which means I get a lot of solves in 3, but today's puzzle took me 5, because like r95, I tried multiple letters in position two before settling on the correct one. Last week was a banner week for me and I got it in 2 guesses three times. But that is far from the norm. Karma was probably taking notes, so I'll be getting a lot of 5 guess solves to make up, I imagine.

A rare "second guess" day for me!

And honestly, there are several letters that could have gone in the first position, so I still could have bombed out. .. That's where the real luck came in, choosing the right one.

For the first time in quite a while, I got today's (5/31) on the second guess! The bot burst my magnificent bubble when it told me that after my (always the same) first word, only one was left .

I'm still wondering how so many people get it on the second guess. The answer is rarely like today's with the solution so close to a popular first word.

R119, It was totally on a whim, with only one vowel! I just look at the keyboard, and think, "Oh, that sounds good!" Today I chose a word with the correct first letter and 3 of the rest, in the wrong order but still!

Wordle-makers seem partial to words with several possibilities---blame, frame, crane, crate, etc., depending on what's blank.

I enjoy feeling clever, saying to myself such things as, "But there is no English word ending in 'xz'" or the like!

Sometimes there's fuckery at work in the NYT wordle office, I feel quite certain. I got it in 4, but it could easily have been five without a lucky guess I made on three.

Initial word had correct first and last letters.

I notice that with today's (7/26) word, so far 1.6% of the people playing actually got it on their first guess. That's pretty high.

Also, 16.4% have gotten it by the second guess. Typically that figure is in the neighborhood of 2%.

I got by guess three, with 54.4% solving it by then.

Today's was easy if you had a helpful starter word, which I did. I got it in two, but the average solve today was 3.2 tries, so a solve in 2 is nothing to write home about.

I actually got it in two today. I had three letters on the first guess, with the second letter in place. But I stared at it for 15 minutes before I could see any possible word.

It took me 5 guesses today. I have been on a streak of getting it in 3.

I got it on my first try today thanks to using one of my favorite starter words.

I got it in two today (Thursday).

I had an extremely lucky guess for the opening word, which limited the solution to just three possible words.

But by looking at the list of words that have been the previous solutions, I was able to eliminate two of those words as they've already been used.

I just figure they won't use the same word more than once.

Does anyone else do that? .. Am I cheating? .. lol

In theory, they would not reuse the same winning word, r140. My sister is a bit obsessive compulsive and she keeps an easily searchable spread sheet to help her recognize words that have been winning words before. (In fact, I think they keep such a list available to the public somewhere, but it's not easily searchable. Wordlebot claims that they only keep an active dictionary of 400 words or so, but that would be used up in a year, so I'm not sure that's true. In fact, I will link wordfinders list below

The W*rdle bot likes to throw shade. In analyzing my second guess for Sunday's puzzle, it tells me:

I had yesterday's (809) in 3, but today's (810) took me 5 (same as wordlebot). I don't use one of the top 10 starter words, because when my starter word works it REALLY works - but sometimes, like in today's puzzle, it was no help at all.

One of those days when I actually neglected to use one of the letters that I'd already gotten in what I thought would be my final guess to solve it, so I ended up in the PHEW category.

The word is not IDIOT but I felt like one.

Good fortune plays a role in some of these solves. My sister and I call those "rookie mistakes, r154, but we make them frequently, especially late at night or when distracted. Today was good fortune for me as I got it in 3. Not quite as fortunate as r152 however.

My 73 day streak came to an end today. Got to the sixth guess with only the first letter missing. There were two possible words and I chose the wrong one.

My bad. I had all but the first and third letter, but there were only two options with my remaining letters.

The solution for Wednesday's is the kind of word where putting in a totally different set of letters in the second guess might be more helpful than running down the entire list of options by trying to guess the one missing letter.

I always used the word "weary" as my first guess and the one day that I did not use it, that was the word of the day. I was so mad. lol. I've gotten it on 2 guesses a few times. Mostly on three guesses I get it right. I used different words for the first guess now.

Today was typical for me. I got wordle in 3, which was a more than satisfactory result from my perspective, but wordlebot dissed my middle solution and counted my solve in 3 as due to luck - then the bot took three tries to solve the puzzle itself. So fuck you, wordlebot.

It's one of those "think like Word!e" days. I was able to get it in four, same as the bot. But so far, there's a 13% fail rate.

I got it in five today, but before that I tried a word that really shouldn't have been accepted as valid, but it was. I was pretty shocked by that.

Today was a Phew day for me. So many choices once I got the outer letters. 6 is rare for me, but it keeps my streak going, so I'm not going to complain. Yes, there will be many unhappy people in wordleland today!

Today's was a bust. I didn't solve it for the very first time and broke my streak, but I have never seen the answer use the same consonant 3 times.

I chose an unusual initial word, I thought, but it had 2 correct letters and 2 incorrect, and that's all she wrote!

R173 There have been at least five other times when they used the same consonant three times: ERROR, FLUFF, MUMMY, NANNY, SISSY.

I got it in three today! If anyone was wondering, the word I was surprised was accepted as valid yesterday was 'faggy"

Today's puzzle was a four for me, and that was the average solve for the word so far. My modest goal in life is to have my 3 solves catch up to and surpass my 4 solves. My total games now are about 280 and of those I have 82 solves in 3 and 100 solves in 4.

It took me all six tries today.

I actually got it in TWO today. Mainly luck, but I could only think of three words that could follow from what I got with my opening word and went with the one I thought Wordl would use.

Wow, awesome r180. This was a three for me, and I considered that lucky.

I can't believe I got today (Monday 10/23) in three.

R182 I also got it three! .. I wasn't really aware of this while playing, but after I read the bot's analysis of my game, it told me that my opening word eliminated all but FIVEwords in its dictionary, and actually I'd only gotten the first letter right, and one other letter in the wrong position. For my second guess, I was having difficulty thinking up words to put in, so eventually I learned why that was.

Wordl is peculiar. It's fun to do once a day, but only once. Every time I played multiple games it was tedious and no fun.

I'm thrilled if I can get Wordl on the third try. Second guess would make me cum.

Wordlebot told me today that my second guess was not its favorite - then proceeded to use that same word in its own generated solve.....hmmm

Took me 4 today - I had two choices and guessed the wrong one first

Do any of you use the bot's strategy to put in a totally different word in your second guess that contains no letter that was already indicated to be in the solution from your first guess?

Example: The bot always starts with SLATE, and often gets one or more letters out of that guess. But then, often puts CRONY in for the second guess. It would appear these two words eliminate so much that the bot can get it in three.

I actually did that for Tuesday's and got it in three.

It's been a long time, but I actually got it with my second guess (for Wednesday's). .. It took the bot four! Ha.

I had three letters with my starter word, but none of them were in the right place.

I always start with the same word (my choice is "aisle") and unless that offers enough to get the answer, I use "month" for my second. My current average score is 3.2.

I've found that the vowel "u" becomes apparent when you've tried a/e/i/o, but m and n are more common than g and r; also, if you've used s, t, m and n and the mystery word is not apparent, r pops as the obvious missing consonant. Today's word was a good example but that much harder by the use of r twice.

My opening word was disincentive (per the bot) and gave me three letters; none in the right position, however.

While I didn't know this while playing, with what I had, the bot's analysis said there were only three possible words to choose from.

Looks like I chose the right one for a change.

Today (Monday) relied heavily on luck guesses.

There’s an app/site that shows the winning word. I get 2 or 3 percent would get it right on the second guess. But any higher than that, I suspect cheating.

R198 I think a lot of players got it on the second guess today, because there are two commonly-used starter words (in the Top 10) that end in the same last three letters of today's word.

Today (Thursday) took me forever to figure out, even though I had four letters (in incorrect spots) on the second guess.

My sister got it in ONE. But it's one of her starter words. She keeps a spread sheet so as not to use guesses up on words that have already been winning words. One other time she got it in one and she's never used that word since. I got it in one one time, and I moved on to another starter word.

One thing I learned today is that the 'bot doesn't always use the same dictionary.

In the analysis of my game, it told me that my second word was a "solid guess," then went on to say that I'd narrowed it down to just six remaining words.

But that wasn't true. My third word was not only valid, but quite common, and yet it wasn't on the 'bot's list of six words.

I solved the game with my fourth word, which was on the 'bot's list.

But I went back and looked at what I had after my second guess, and I could easily think of four other words to put in that weren't on the bot's list of six.

I always start with 'mouse' just because it has three different vowels.

I got it five, but only because my second guess narrowed it down to seven words (per the 'bot) But the solution isn't something I'd think of right off without going through the remaining letters I had one by one.

Yeah, that one took me five, too. I was running out of letters and guessed the word without thinking it would be correct.

Today's was tough.

Also took me five. After going through the letters methodically as I usually do it just popped into my head.

Thursday's is another one game where so far 8% are failing to get it.

But it's for a different reason. Based on a few letters that most people will probably get right off, there are then many, many choices, so I think a lot players go through them and run out of guesses.

It took me SIX tries.

I got Wednesdays in 3 tries - but I was on high alert because of the warning above. It was a hard word and, in my opinion, not an English word, so there is that....I will try Thursdays in 2 hours if I can stay awake.

I got Thursday in 5, and again it was a lucky guess.

Yesterday's brok my 63 day streak and made me realize it's just a lot of luck

A lot of people will get Friday's in two .. especially the bot, if you get my drift.

So for Saturday, I got to my third guess, the word is accepted, and later in the analysis the 'bot tells me:

What befuddles me is how I beat or tie the bot but it tells me my skill is lower than average, my luck is lover than average and yet I'm consistently getting the correct answer faster than average. I think the bot is prejudiced because I won't use SLATE as my first guess, apparently the only first guess that the bot considers worthy.

My guesses are overwhelmingly either 3 or 4. I'm trying to get the 3s to outnumber the 4s, but the 4s always stay about 30 more than the 3s. Frustrating. At least now my 2s are catching up with my 6s. I have no idea about the answer to OPs question; I got it in 2 tries yesterday and it was sheer luck, since there were several words that fit the pattern.

R214 NINJA might be a word used far more often by present-day English speakers than often-used starter word ADIEU.

I actually got Monday's in TWO.

But luckily, my starter word gave me the first three letters in the correct positions.

From what I could figure, there were only two possible words left, and this is where it came in handy that I knew one of those two had already been the solution to a prior game, so putting in the other was a no-brainier.

Today was the first time in many months it took me all six. I was like freaking out!

I can see getting it in two guesses today (I got it in four; double letters always flummox me), but there is no way 0.3% of people playing use today's word as their starting guess. I don't understand the point of cheating on Wordle. Why bother?

R231 I'm the type of player who doesn't use a regular starter word. I mix it up all the time. I try to think up words with two vowels, but that's about it. Often the 'bot later tells me that was a "unique" word to start with. .. Anyway, let's just say, my starter word for Monday's game was a GREAT choice.

TRAIN, then CLOSE have been working g wonderfully for me recently.

Sometimes I’ll switch it to SLATE as a start.

I use STERN then AUDIO. That uses all vowels (except occasionally Y) and the four most used consonants (R,S,T,N).

Where are you all finding the information on the average numbers for solving by day?

I’ve only been playing for 48 days and glaze last week was the first time losing. Between that and being told I had died of cancer by DL I was quite traumatized.

R236 If you have the NYT 'bot analyze your game play, it takes you through each step of play and compares your game with other players. Thereby, you can see what percent of players solved the game at each step of play. So when you get to the sixth and final step,it shows you how many players have solved the puzzle by then. It's generally somewhere in the neighborhood of 99%. but with harder words like NINJA, it was down to 92% indicating 8% of players failed. The bot also gives the average number of steps it took players to solve the thing for each game.

Is the bot in the app?

ElderLez- when you get to the end of the game and it applauds you , there's a chart that keeps track of all your wins and losses. That page is called statistics. Underneath the chart is the sentence :

"Wordlebot gives an analysis of your guesses. Did you beat the bot? ›"

If you click on that it becomes a link. That will take you to the wordlebot. The wordlebot will go through your solutions word by word and tell you whether you were skillful, lucky or neither. If you keep scrolling past all of that, there will be charts of solutions, 1-6 and you can see what percentage of people have solved in 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 guesses and you can also see what were some of the guesses they made on the way to solving. Today nearly 20% of people failed to solve - that's a huge percentage of failure for wordle solutions. I feel very lucky to have gotten it in 4.

I don't think the link to the bot appears in the app, ElderLez, which is surprising because the app picks up with my stats when I happen to play on my phone rather than my usual laptop. The Times is usually pretty good with technology, so there must be something about the bot that won't work on a phone.

r245 When I play on my phone, on my stat page I still get a little picture of a robot that says "wordlebot gives an analysis of your guesses. Did you beat the bot?" The way the link is set up is slightly different than in the computer version, but it is definitely there.

Wild. Read this thread, which reminded me to play my daily Wordle, and got it on the second try. Rare.

I think there are at least two versions of the Wordle app. I have the iPhone NYT games app which is included with my Times subscription and it does not have a link to the bot. I looked in the Apple app store and see there is a paid version specifically for Wordle, which I'm guessing is what you're using menluvinguy which makes sense that they'd include the bot link but not in the free NYT games version I'm using (when I play on my phone). Maybe there's another version for Android? And ElderLez, are you a Times subscriber, or paying for either the games app or the Wordle app? I think if you're paying for a subscription they should include the bot analysis link.

Meanwhile, got today's in 3 (which kind of surprised me as my solve was what I'd call an educated-SWAG).

The issue with today's word is that even if you have the last four letters, you might lose, as there are so many rhymes where only the first letter is different. You might want to figure those out and put in a totally different elimination word using as many of those as possible.

r254, you're correct about today's word, and that was the downfall for a friend of mine who ran out of options before she could solve. I had only the first and last letter and one vowel towards the end, which was yet another problem, because there were many potential answers. I feel lucky to have gotten it in 5. The wordlbot praised my skill, but said I had shitty luck.

Times subscriber on an iPhone. I’m paying extra for the games. I think the app give me access to the old crosswords which I wouldn’t have otherwise.

I got it in two today as well (Saturday). I only had the first letter, but for some reason, that didn't seem to leave as many options as I thought it would and I guessed the correct answer almost immediately.

Today pissed me off. I only had the last two letters correct after 3 guesses and it took me forever, with the letters left, to figure it out.

I was not a fan of today's (Sunday's word). There was some evilness on the part of the NYT today. It took me five and I felt lucky to even get that.

Today's word is British in origin and not in 90% of American's vocabulary. I was very lucky to get it in 4.

Yes, today's word is not one that I'd consider fair use in Wordle because i) R268 is correct; 2) they've generally avoided words that repeat consonants so using a word that repeats vowels seems designed to trip up those of us who play by observation/deduction. That said, if you hit on the two vowels in sequence the answer wasn't hard... but it took me four guesses.

And I don't believe for one second that 0.3% of users got this one on the first try. Why do people cheat like this?

It's pure luck, OP. I've gotten it on the second guess two days in a row now. I use the present and past tense of the same word every day. It contains three of the five vowels.

Today sucked again. I had the last 2 letters, and when I got to my 5th try I did not see a word with my remaining letters. I had to put it down and watch CSI: NY to empty my brain. I don't read the analysis, but it had to be the only possible word left for me.

Today's was hard due to the word including an uncommon letter which always trips me up and shows my over-reliance on the structure of the game over word composition (or as the bot proclaims, paraphrasing: my training suggests that words with this letter are unlikely). That said, there's no way that 0.2% of players start with today's word if we're to believe the bot's analysis. If you started with any word that contains this letter, you'd be starting with a word that ranks tied for second-to-last in letter frequency among all five-letter words — IOW, a fools errand.

I'm, of course, dancing around just writing out the word but it brings up a question: do we want to put the daily word out there knowing this thread contains spoilers? It's not like there aren't dozens of sites that give hints if not just outright reveal the answer. We've avoided it, but it makes discussing the game a bit more complex.

This has not been a good week for me. I've got it in 5 most days, sometimes 4.

The past two days were 3 guess solutions for me. I rarely get all the way to 5 but I did one day this week. When I am really stumped and get all the way to 6, I break out in a cold sweat, because my streak is up to about 250 now. My personal goal is to get my 3 guess solutions equal to my 4 guess solutions. Right now, I have 104 3 guesses and 119 4 guesses.

I lost my streak today on that #$*%^(^ word. Had the first two letters and the last pretty early, but just too many options and ran out of guesses. The correct answer was on my list, but I had three to choose from on that final guess and I ran out of luck.

There are six words that contain the same five letters.

So difficult. I couldn’t even think what to put and had to go with an intentionally wrong word just to move forward, but I just got it on five.

Sunday (12/3) was a lucky day for me. 'Bot said my starter word limited it to just three possible solutions, and for once, I chose the right one, so got it in two.

A certain common starter word is occasionally very helpful and today's puzzle was a perfect example.

STARE is the best first guess though some people swear by AUDIO.

Combo of dumb luck with some strategy. I start with either the present or past tense of a verb. One or two letters usually are right...at times even in the right square. Then, it takes using your noggin...having a good vocabulary helps a lot!

Spelling Bee is much more challenging.

I never stick with the same word to start. It adds to randomness and the challenge. I'm there to wake up my brain. I've played 425 games and only got it in two ten times. The only measure I'm kinda partial to is whether the total of my gets in 1,2,3, and 4 tries outnumber my gets in 5 and 6 tries.

Today (Sunday) was pure luck. I got it in 3 with only 2 letters on the second guess.

I picked the wrong one, so had to settle for #3. 😠

R319, I love Spelling Bee and Letter Boxed, but don't like that new games are up only after 3:00 a.m. EST.! At least Wordle is 12:01 a.m.!

Also, my not being a subscriber, Spelling Bee cuts out early for me.

With Letter Boxed, you can't double letters as you can with Spelling Bee. Also, the creators of LB are clever in placing common combinations in the same row/column, making them unusable.

I find letter box frustrating, but love connections.

I find with Connections I'm almost invariably word perfect or completely fail. Seldom do I get just a few wrong in the process.

Without reading that essay, I'd say:

---Be aware that any correct letter might be used more than once.

---Know your possible letter combinations: sh, sn, ch, tch, bl, br, cr, sm, etc., etc. And when one is impossible.

---Nouns aren't pluralized (e.g., " birds," "noses," etc.); and verbs aren't 2nd-Person Singular (e.g., "walks," "reads," etc.).

---If you guess a consonant on first try that isn't in the correct place, next try it as the initial letter (if still feasible).

---If you know "really helpful initial words to use all the time," so does the NYT.

Got it on the first guess once. A friend was texting and had just sent me the single word text "probably". I needed a 5 letter word, and since I was staring at "probably", I tried Probe. I almost fell off my seat when it was correct.

Today should have been fairly easy, but it took me 6.

I enjoy playing Wordl on the NYT every day. But I always start with a different word every time. It’s more fun.

I most often get it 4/6. The only 3 times I’ve missed the word in the past year have been because I was missing only one letter, and never got it.

Two should be fairly easy for many players if they tend to go with a couple of the most common starter words.

I've been doing Wordle every day for about a year and a half and have solved it on the second guess more than 50 times. I vary my starter words because using the same one every day would be boring, but I always use a starter word with at least three different vowels.

1/15:

FINALLY! Got it on #2!

First guess got me one letter in the correct spot, no others.

Got it in two today (1/18) but for the first time the bot said I had a skill level of 99! Usually when I get it in two the bot says I'm really, really lucky.

Guessing Wordle on the second try is largely luck, as the WordleBot so bitchily reminds me whenever I do.

The automatic response for solving Wordle on the first guess is "Genius." That strikes me as ridiculous, because solving it on the first guess is pure luck and nothing else. Luck is definitely involved when solving it in two guesses, but skill and strategy also play a part.

Does it bother people that the winning word is never repeated but you don’t know what those words are? I’m assuming there’s a list somewhere but can’t decide if it would be cheating to look at it.

So Monday's proved to be a fail for me. It's been awhile, but at least I'm failing with nearly 12% of players. Ha!

I also needed five guesses to get Sunday's. I get most of them in three or four, with an occasional two-guesser and, on rare occasions, a "Phew."

Friday sucked. I had three correct letters on the first guess and still didn't get it. Goodbye 165 day streak.

There's about a 16% failure rate on Friday's. Four here, but I was lucky with guesses two and three.

I got it in three, My opening word had a vowel in the correct position and one other letter not in the correct position. My first instinct was the actual solution, but I second guessed myself and used another word for guess two. That guess left only one option, which was the correct solution. My sister lost a long streak today too. Almost worse case scenario seemed to be having the first three letters in the starter word, because it just left way too many options.

I also got it in three. Still annoyed about the bug that dumped my history.

One of my issues was I really wasn't paying attention to just how many options there were left and didn't consider playing a random word to eliminate certain letters until it was really too late to do that. My luck was that I just happened to choose the right word from one of three remaining possibilities.

Tuesday turned out to be one of those strange games where the 10 letters from my first two guesses gave me absolutely nothing, but I was able to guess the word on my third attempt from the 16 remaining letters.

Sunday's is proving to be difficult. Close to a 15% failure rate so far. It's another one of those words that can be so many others based on just one letter.

I got it on my sixth and final try. The bot took five, so I don't feel too bad.

Four for me.

Five for me, and I was getting nervous because about 2 other possibilities remained.

Six for me. Phew! Four tries with the fourth letter.

Saw those r444. Due to r441's warning & yours, I approached cautiously. Blanketed the common letters with three words, eliminating all false possibilities and got it in four.

I got all but the fourth letter on the second try. Someone once told me the best strategy in this case is to waste a try on a random word that uses as many of the possible letters as you can. That way you can eliminate a lot of the possiblities in one try rather than wasting all of your tries one letter at a time.

Of course, I didn't follow this advice today.

Yesterday's was not that difficult but it took me 5 tries. Today's was one of those times that I got three letters with my initial word (aisle) and I got the answer correctly on the second word, but this is where human intuition paid off, knowing that the human who selects the word of the day would probably pick a word with at least two of the same letter to trip up Sunday players. It was again amusing that the bot said it was all luck and no skill. I understand why and how the bot scores this, but humans are playing the game and intuition and experience are factors.

Almost 20% failing today. I got it in 6. Phew!

Thanks for the tip R448! .. Due to that, I opted to play an elimination word with all new letters for my third entry, which allowed me to solve it with my fourth entry.

It took me six. Scary. I still had 1 or 2 possibilities, so I was sweating.

Had to laugh at the bot's comments on my second guess for Saturday's game (3/23).

'Bot told me it didn't like the word I put in, even though, I reduced the number of words it could be from 41 down to just three.

I think that was pretty damn good .. lol.

I will say, be careful in this game. The solution is one of four words that contain the exact same letters (so it's a case of anagrams).

Took me until 4 today, but I did get yesterday’s in three for obvious reasons.

I used my standard starting word today, “irate”. You can see how then I easily got the correct answer on the second word.

Got it on my first guess. I was part of of the 4 %. It's such a common starter word. I was surprised they would use it for a daily word. It's the second time it has happened. Got it in one try before with "irate".

Recommendation: if you're starting to get stumped after three, you might want to put in an elimination word with brand new letters. I should have done that on the fourth try, but waited until the fifth. The 'bot did it as well, but on the fourth try.

And what is an "elimination word"?

I think we all know what we're doing by now.

R500 An "elimination word" might be used when a player has four of the five letters, but there are many choices for the fifth letter, so you try to whittle down or eliminate the possibilities.

Example: _ O W E R

Possible letters to solve the game would be B, C, L, M, P, R, S, T - so you might run out of guesses before you choose the right one.

You yourself wrote in R496 that you were just lucky to have picked the right word indicating it could have gone several ways

Maybe some of the letters were already used in the game, but you could eliminate four of them, or perhaps find the right one, by putting in the word "CLASP." Other options would be "SPERM" or "SCRUM" or "BLIMP" ....

I was simply using the phrase "free pick" to mean you have one or more turns to try something altogether different before you get to the "do or die" sixth guess.

That high rate doesn't surprise me. After my second guess, I could see how things could go very badly, so I opted for a word that would give me information about three of the potential letters, which allowed me solve it on the fourth guess.

Feeling rather dejected after not getting it in 6 guesses day before yesterday, destroying a long string of "wins". First time that's happened to me! But it begged a question: has the bot ever not gotten the answer in 6 guesses?

R521 According to the NYT FAQ on the game, the 'bot has failed several times in "hard mode." I have never selected which mode to play in, but I usually play the game using hard mode rules. Yet, when I'm sensing I might have a difficult time, I'll put in a guess that's allowed in "standard mode."

Here's a screencap someone put up from one of the times the bot lost. The date was April 18, 2023. The word was HOUND. So if one had the last four letters and was playing in hard mode, it would be pretty easy to run out of guesses, since there are at least eight fairly common words ending with those letters.

I only had one letter in my first guess and it was not in the right position. Somehow I miraculously guessed the correct answer in 3. Total luck. I knew where the vowel could NOT be from my second guess and that led me to the correct answer, but there were probably 10 other possibilities. I do like it when I beat the bot, and today the bot took 5 tries to get the correct answer.

Do you think it's cheating to guess invalid words, just to rule out other letters?

For example, today my first guess revealed one green and one yellow letter. I then made a second guess that used more vowels, but didn't include the yellow letter. So I knew it was wrong, but confirming if other vowels were in the word was important to my next guess.

R550 The 'bot does what you're suggesting all the time when playing the game in "regular" or "easy" mode, so it's not cheating. When playing in "hard" mode, you're supposed to come up with guesses that conform to what you've already gotten in previous guesses, explained elsewhere as follows:

No, r550. I do that often, sometimes to check position of one letter, sometimes to rule out a lot of consonants in one throw.

The wordlebot uses words that don't include letters it already has exposed ALL the time. Apparently it's a good way of ferreting out information. I rarely do it though.

I got it in three which was just plain dumb luck as I think most are under four.

My problem today was that once I hade letters 1,2,5 in place there were too many options, including a bunch of double-letter words I tried.

Watch out for Monday's it's about 9% failure rate. I got it in five, but it's not really a word in my vocabulary. I'd run out of all the consonants that could possibly be in one of the spaces, so had to look it up in the dictionary to refresh my memory that it could be the word.
