Cunk On Earth Is Some Funny Shit

A "mockumentary" covering all of human history. I laughed hard. Is anyone on DL watching this?

I thought it got old fast. It’s no spinal tap.

by Anonymousreply 1February 4, 2023 3:04 PM

No, but I’ll check it out just based on your post. Even if it is a PR plant. I’m always looking for good shit and I’ve learned I’m very discriminating.

I’ll come back and add my thoughts when I‘ve seen it. I’m quite sure you’ll be waiting to hear…

Hopefully others add to the thread in the meantime, otherwise this will be a very boring discussion.

by Anonymousreply 2February 4, 2023 3:07 PM

I love Diane Morgan.

by Anonymousreply 3February 4, 2023 3:10 PM

It looked stupid but I’ll check it out now

by Anonymousreply 4February 4, 2023 3:12 PM

She started as a character on a Charlie Brooker series (creator of Black Mirror), then got a few BBC specials and a mini series in the same vein. Some of the older ones are almost perfect, especially the Daily-Show-style "being an idiot in a conversation with an expert".

by Anonymousreply 5February 4, 2023 6:32 PM

She is quite good in Afterlife.

by Anonymousreply 6February 4, 2023 8:12 PM

I've enjoyed it so far.

When she referred to Galileo's full name as Galileo Figaro Magnifico (lol) and seeing the reaction of the scholar she was interviewing, I cracked.

by Anonymousreply 7February 5, 2023 4:35 AM

Is Cunk a play on Cunt?

by Anonymousreply 8February 5, 2023 4:38 AM

Charlie Brooker's original Screenwipe series from a zillion years ago was really funny. I thought the more recent one, Death to 2020, was stupid. I suspect this is more in the vein of the recent unfunny one. But I'll watch so I can complain about it if it sucks as much as I think it will.

by Anonymousreply 9February 5, 2023 4:38 AM

Very funny but it will have a short shelf life. The moment the show gets too famous, the gig will be up. Then again the UK is far better about ending programs when they are still good and not running them into the ground.

by Anonymousreply 10February 5, 2023 9:49 AM

OP, I've watched 2 episodes, and I've been laughing my arse off!

There's just something about British humor that is so cleverly stupid it cracks me up.

(Slightly off topic: do any of you Brit [or others] Eldergays remember the series of movies, "Carry On..." [Carry On Doctor, Carry On Nurse etc.]? I would laugh my head off watching those movies. Again, cleverly stupid).

by Anonymousreply 11February 6, 2023 11:10 AM

I watched one episode and got bored half way through. It has some funny moments but it’s just tedious after a while.

by Anonymousreply 12February 6, 2023 11:16 AM

It's brilliant. We laughed so hard I was afraid we'd broken some ribs. Morgan is absolutely hysterical. R12 has no sense of humor.

by Anonymousreply 13February 9, 2023 5:21 PM

All the esteemed professors being interviewed by Cunk and keeping a straight face deserve Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 14February 9, 2023 5:22 PM

Got old really fast for me. Best enjoyed as Reels in FB or IG. Whole episodes are too much.

by Anonymousreply 15February 9, 2023 5:34 PM

I saw Diane Morgan for the first time in Charlie Brooker's Death to 2020 and Death to 2021 shows. She was the best thing about them. I looked her up and it seems like she mainly works for Charlie Brooker. No new Black Mirror episodes coming up?

by Anonymousreply 16February 9, 2023 5:40 PM

Half of the jokes landed, the others weren’t really that funny.

I think this is a result of the editing. They pack A LOT of jokes into each minute and by the very nature of having so many, more aren’t going to land.

I listened to more of them than I watched and every few minutes I’d hear something that was so bizarre that is had me cackling.

by Anonymousreply 17February 9, 2023 5:43 PM

My favorite bit was when she asks the professor "what was more culturally significant: the Renaissance or Beyonce's 'Single Ladies'?" and the professor suddenly looking terrified he might end up being cancelled by the BHive on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 18February 9, 2023 5:47 PM

Quite funny at times, but needs a better editor.

by Anonymousreply 19February 9, 2023 5:54 PM

"Quite funny" - it was hysterically funny, you miserable git.

by Anonymousreply 20February 9, 2023 5:55 PM

I’d like to know what the academics were told. Some seem to be in on the joke and some seem appalled.

by Anonymousreply 21February 9, 2023 5:58 PM

The pompous professor getting more and more annoyed with Cunk as she insisted he tell her whether the Romans had invented - or perfected - anal bleaching.

by Anonymousreply 22February 9, 2023 6:00 PM

Weird - I did not find this funny. Seems too try hard - excessively ironic. Expected to like it - but had to stop after 20 minutes. Somewhat witty - but I think it’s the woman’s performance or delivery. Not as funny as Borat.

by Anonymousreply 23February 9, 2023 6:04 PM

I found Borat obnoxious and not funny and Morgan brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 24February 9, 2023 6:07 PM

Found Cunk on Britain, Cunk on Christmas, Cunk on Shakespeare, a bunch of Cunk Moments of Wonder on YouTube. Hysterical.

by Anonymousreply 25February 14, 2023 5:39 PM

I loved it too. I'm amazed any of the professors can sit through those interviews, but I loved it. And yeah, some of them seem to be in on it, but not sure all of them.

by Anonymousreply 26February 14, 2023 6:45 PM

For me, a successful mockumentary has to be at least semi-plausible. Here, why would anyone hire an idiot to host a big-budget history series?

by Anonymousreply 27February 14, 2023 7:24 PM

I love it. When the expert sits with her as she cries about nuclear war, I about lost it. Like a lot of comedy, it can go too silly/absurd, but the vast majority made me laugh.

That said, I can understand why it wouldn't be for everyone. For the life of me, I don't understand how people sit through shows like "Two and a half Men."

To each his own.

by Anonymousreply 28February 14, 2023 7:26 PM

If you like Cunk, you should watch her comedy series “Mandy” on YouTube - it’s hysterical.

by Anonymousreply 29February 14, 2023 11:11 PM

Pump up the jam, pump it up While your feet are stompin' And the jam is pumpin' Look ahead, the crowd is jumpin' Pump it up a little more Get the party going on the dance floor See, 'cause that's where the party's at And you'll find out if you do that I don't want a place to stay Get your booty on the floor tonight Make my day I don't want a place to stay Get your booty on the floor tonight Make my day Make my day Make my day Make my day Make my day Pump up the jam, pump it up While your feet are stompin' And the jam is pumpin' Look ahead, the crowd are jumpin' Pump it up a little more Get the party going on the dance floor See, 'cause that's where the party's at And you'll find out if you do that

by Anonymousreply 30February 14, 2023 11:24 PM

From IMDB Trivia Section: All the experts know it is a mock interview, but are asked to take the questions as seriously as they can, be respectful, and not make their own jokes.

by Anonymousreply 31February 14, 2023 11:28 PM

R29 thanks for the tip. Just watched a bunch of Mandy. Absolutely brilliant. And dammit Diane Morgan should have played Lucille Ball.

by Anonymousreply 32February 15, 2023 1:39 AM

Agree R27. And R31 - that’s exactly why I didn’t find it funny. It’s trying to be deceitfully genuine - but is so clearly implausible and it’s not like she is “getting over” on the experts. Borat was funny because that is the elect that worked - the interviewees were sincere. This is just a weird mush-mash of acting like they aren’t in on the joke,

by Anonymousreply 33February 15, 2023 2:03 AM

I barely got through episode one. The premise got stale quickly. I felt bad that interviewees had to endure her. I'm sure there were multiple takes which must have made things awkward as they progressed.

However, having said that, I would watch a blooper reel.

by Anonymousreply 34February 15, 2023 2:10 AM

We ended up watching all the series of Mandy on YouTube last night and laughing ourselves sick. BBC has commissioned another series. Can't wait. Morgan is the funniest physical comedienne since Lucille Ball.

by Anonymousreply 35February 15, 2023 5:07 PM

I laughed out loud quite a bit.

by Anonymousreply 36February 20, 2023 7:13 PM

[quote] OP, I've watched 2 episodes, and I've been laughing my arse off! There's just something about British humor that is so cleverly stupid it cracks me up.

Oh, god. Arse? Let me guess, you’re American.

by Anonymousreply 37February 20, 2023 7:20 PM

[quote] Morgan is the funniest physical comedienne since Lucille Ball.

Said no one ever.

by Anonymousreply 38February 20, 2023 7:21 PM

Binged Mandy yesterday after seeing the recommendations in this thread and was laughing my ass off not five minutes into the first episode. Her hammering tarantulas amongst the bananas to the beat of Harry Belafonte's Day-O was hysterical.

Been watching her "Cunk On..." work on YouTube over the past week as well, so funny. Crazy how long it's taken for this series to blow up outside the UK.

by Anonymousreply 39February 20, 2023 10:07 PM

I'll give it a try. I'm always on the look out for some British humour which seems hard to come by.

by Anonymousreply 40February 20, 2023 10:38 PM

I find Mandy even funnier than Cunk. Morgan's a genius. Her Mandy walk, slinking along with her legs ahead of her body like some demented insect is brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 41February 20, 2023 10:49 PM

I like how unprepared the experts are when she says something serious or unexpectedly profound.

by Anonymousreply 42February 21, 2023 2:47 AM

R42 apparently the academics are fully aware they're taking part in a comedy routine and are familiar with Philomena because she's been doing bits on British TV for years, but they don't know what she's going to ask or any of her follow-ups which she ad-libs depending on how they answer her questions.

by Anonymousreply 43February 21, 2023 11:16 PM

Here she is from 2016 interviewing Brian Cox about how the universe will end. Well worth 3 minutes of your time for a truly memorable payoff at the end.

by Anonymousreply 44February 22, 2023 3:27 AM

Sorry, I thought I set the above to start at 1:35; that's where the interview starts.

by Anonymousreply 45February 22, 2023 3:30 AM

I love her. She’s always funny BUT this has the potential yet some of the content just lags. There’s the joke but it’s not polished (if she let Ricky Gervais finish the job, she’d be warming an Emmy). I can’t get past her grotesque sticking out neck mole. It is distracting and needs to be cut off immediately. Moles are my Achilles heel when I’m watching tv or movies. In real life, I can’t fuck a guy with moles.

by Anonymousreply 46February 22, 2023 3:32 AM

My favourite part is when she walks up to the expert and goes "Who are you and what's your game?" Or simply "What are you?" It's so rude and un-British, I can't help but laugh.

Anyway, here's a Q&A with her, Charlie Brooker, and the cute producer Sam Ward from a couple of months ago. Hopefully you aren't triggered by the moderator, he is Chrissy Metz-sized and I know how DL feels about that sort of thing.

I think it would have worked better if she was reacting to what the experts said, instead of having a barrage of stupidity, camera swing to expert looking baffled, then back to Cunk for more stupidity. After all while, the stupidity grows tiresome and repetitive.

I was hoping for more of a Daily Show, and got... Not quite sure what that was. I could only bear two episodes before I ducked out.

by Anonymousreply 48February 22, 2023 4:54 AM

R44–I just can’t get past the objection that no one would allow someone that stupid to be in the role of presenting a scientific program. In particular her “Pocalypse” error could never make to air. She needs to be plausibly stupid—subtle enough to pass through lazy, superficial review and editing. That’s much harder to do. Monty Python were so much better at this kind of thing.

by Anonymousreply 49February 22, 2023 5:36 AM

I tried, but I found it to be relentlessly idiotic. Watching a comedian spit nonsense at an uncomfortable academic is not exactly a laugh riot. It’s no The Daily Show.

by Anonymousreply 50February 22, 2023 6:27 AM

Who knew the DL harbored such dour, humorless individuals as those posting in this thread?

by Anonymousreply 51February 22, 2023 5:05 PM

Who didn’t know?

by Anonymousreply 52February 22, 2023 5:06 PM

The Daily Show is a laugh riot? WTF? It has been exhaustingly try-too-hard since Stewart left.

by Anonymousreply 53February 22, 2023 5:09 PM

Cunk Christmas special is some funny shit.

by Anonymousreply 54February 22, 2023 5:11 PM

For R8, Cunk is spunk and/or cunt. I think it was NPR "didn't get the joke" in their review headline and it was hilarious. Philomena Cunk is much more subtle than Barry Shitpeas

by Anonymousreply 55February 22, 2023 5:21 PM

Her episode of 'Where There's a Will There's a Wake' with Kathy Burke is hilarious.

Tried watching Mandy. I'm left to believe that Mandy must be some kind of recovering stroke victim what with the constant twisted mouth contortion thing that she is constantly doing throughout the episodes.

by Anonymousreply 57February 22, 2023 6:45 PM

R57 when someone devoid of a sense of humor attempts to watch a comedy program...

by Anonymousreply 58February 22, 2023 9:24 PM

[quote]Cunk Christmas special is some funny shit.

"Mary had to give birth here on the floor, like a crack addict."

And of course she pronounced Mary as Murray because of the accent.

by Anonymousreply 59February 22, 2023 10:00 PM

I love it when Cunk asks the religious art expert why all the paintings of Jesus show him either as a baby or being crucified and are there no paintings of him being crucified as a baby?

by Anonymousreply 60February 22, 2023 10:44 PM

Love the episodes where Mandy -at the end of her tether- pulls out a cigarette and lights up: lying naked on a table covered in food at a Chinese restaurant, locked in a coffin...

by Anonymousreply 61February 23, 2023 4:55 PM

Does anyone know what her very last line in Mandy is, when she sticks her hand out the grave with a fag? I couldn't make it out and there were no CCs available.

by Anonymousreply 62February 23, 2023 10:12 PM

A lot of it doesn't land and some of it makes me cringe, but at least once an episode the bitch gets me giggling until my eyes water.

by Anonymousreply 63February 23, 2023 11:30 PM

[quote]Does anyone know what her very last line in Mandy is, when she sticks her hand out the grave with a fag?

I think she said something along the lines of, "I have a drill with me here" because they showed her earlier drilling a hole in the wall with a hand drill to spy on the security guards.

by Anonymousreply 64February 25, 2023 4:25 AM

Cunk On Life.

January 2nd on Netflix.

I wanted to like it, but it's just not smart enough. Not by half. It's only marginally better than a genuinely ignorant person making a joke of his own ignorance.
