What do you think of Paul Lynde’s looks?

Do you think he looked better as just a head or with a whole body?

Do you think he looked better in 1967 than Charles Nelson Reilly looked in 1973?

What do you think of Paul Lynde’s looks???

He looked square.

I just loved him as Uncle Arthur. Such a perfect match of actor and role.

It's not really about his looks. He didn't photograph in a particularly flattering way. It's the combination of his personality and physical humor. On film, and when being himself, he was mischievously hot. I would have, enthusiastically.

I have a childhood friend whose mother was a pretty active actor in Hollywood 60's thru 80's. Was at their house once afternoon, I was probably 19 & this was probably 1995-ish & my friends mother had all these banker boxes on the dining table. They were boxes & boxes of head shots of all her co-stars from all the productions she was also in. They traded autographed photos of each other in the day I guess..... I was leafing through a random box as she came in & out, moving boxes from here to there- she was manic at times, which I was certainly familiar with. I came across Paul Lynde's photo, pulled it out, laughed out loud & asked, "What were you in with him"? She couldn't remember, paused & shook her heard & said, verbatim "Oh that fucking cunt......" my friend & I looked at each other & cracked up!! She said, "take it out & throw it away". So, I took it out, folded it & put it in my pocket....... My friend still has it. Had it framed & when asked why all the folds/creases in the photo, the story above comes out.

Look closely at that photo. Somebody in post-editing added an entire set of teeth on top of Paul's actual teeth, probably to make his smile non-gummy but instead gave him gigantic choppers!

I recently watched a YouTube by Dearly Departed Tours about the death of DL icon Agnes Moorehead. The preamble is the presenter showing off his various "Bewitched" artifacts, including autographs. Most of them were on plain sheets of paper, and as the signature was shown, a photo of the actor was superimposed in the corner of the screen. When he got to Paul Lynde, the photo was a headshot dating from the 1950s to early 1960s. Yowza! Mr. Lynde was one handsome devil! Like R3 , I would have.

he was one of the meanest old grouches in the world, very miserable with his fame,

by Anonymousreply 7February 4, 2023 8:35 AM

I can't WW R4 enough! What a great story!

by Anonymousreply 8February 4, 2023 9:41 AM

I was wondering about his teeth in that photo too R5. They look like dentures but not very convincing.

by Anonymousreply 9February 4, 2023 9:42 AM

Hmmm, not for me.

His teeth!

by Anonymousreply 11February 4, 2023 10:05 AM

He grew up a fatty

by Anonymousreply 12February 4, 2023 10:18 AM

You forgot “from any/all eras,” OP!

by Anonymousreply 13February 4, 2023 10:20 AM

He did a local talk show in my city, and showed up in white slacks, a long poncho and carrying a purse. He made the host uncomfortable, because he was obviously drunk and kept saying there were so many handsome men who were in the band. He was bloated and talked about growing up fat and being made fun of. He said he couldn't run from the bullies, so when they caught up to him, he deadpanned that he just kissed them before he could get hit.

I always wished that someone would make a movie about him. I grew up watching him and loved him as Uncle Arthur. My son told me they probably never would, because he was a very unhappy man and had some trauma during his life. I really hated to hear that.

If by “some trauma” you mean “throwing a hustler out of a hotel room window,” then yeah R15, Paul had it rough.

[quote] It's not really about his looks.

But what do you think about his looks?

by Anonymousreply 17February 4, 2023 3:56 PM

R5/R9, I think those are his real teeth. As people get older, their gums recede and their teeth appear longer. You've never heard the expression, "long in the tooth," meaning old?

This was especially true in the past, when dental health was not as emphasized and periodontal surgery was rare. And smoking and drinking really fuck up your mouth and gums, and Paul did far more than his share of both.

Result: Disconcertingly long "horse teeth."

by Anonymousreply 18February 4, 2023 4:02 PM

Harvey Korman was the heterosexual equivalent of Paul. A depressed, solitary man who would get drunk and become angry and miserable. He often made scenes in restaurants, telling people he should have been a bigger star.

by Anonymousreply 19February 4, 2023 4:03 PM

As an actor, he was like salt: in small doses, he was delightful and brightened everything. In large doses, he quickly became irritating, even repulsive. He's best known for Bewitched and Hollywood Squares because they used him properly, in small bursts so that he didn't wear out his welcome and always left you wanting more.

I find him fascinating as a person, and also as a gay man. He was both a victim of the enforced closet of Hollywood and his own worst enemy. During the run of Bewitched and Hollywood Squares, he may have been the most visible non-closeted gay man most Americans had ever seen. (I say non-closeted instead of "out," because he never quite came out, but he certainly never tried to pretend he was straight.)

There's at least one bio of him, "Center Square." Anyone read it?

R18 I agree, The head on a platter scene is at 1:35, looks like his teeth match the photo.

Average I suppose. But they didn’t matter because he was a very funny character actor with a razor sharp wit.

by Anonymousreply 22February 4, 2023 4:29 PM

He was super furry. A big plus for me.

by Anonymousreply 23February 4, 2023 4:40 PM

He reminded me a little bit of John Ritter in certain angles.

by Anonymousreply 24February 4, 2023 11:46 PM

R17- As far as his looks, not knowing anything about his personality... Blandly hot in a corn-fed sort of way, after he lost the weight, but with his snark etched into his face and evident as soon as he made almost any expression.

The latter, I'm guessing, makes him either extremely unattractive, or (again) unconventionally hot, depending on the person asked. For me, personally, I wouldn't be able to get past the teeth if it weren't for his personality.
