Older millennial here. I've seen every episode of GG at least 20 times, but I've never seen Maude. Do I need to watch Maude in order to fully understand and appreciate GG/Bea Arthur? It ran 6 seasons. It would be a big time commitment if I decide to watch. Is it worth it?
No. Like you I've seen every GG episode many times but only see bits of Maude here and there. They are very different shows and Maude feels very dated now -- slow-moving, overly topical, with scripts that are almost play-like. Not nearly as funny as more durable '70s classics like All in the Family, MTM and MASH.
GG has a much higher rate of jokes, doesn't take itself very seriously and even though it's closing in on 40 itself, doesn't seem nearly as dated for whatever reason.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 3, 2023 11:59 PM |
I don't think it would be worth it to watch Maude, especially not 6 seasons of it. Bea Arthur, in Maude, was similar to Dorothy in GG. Kind of loud, commanding, intelligent, funny.

Hammy Betty White wasn’t in it, but Hammy Bea, Hammy Hermione Baddely, and Hammy RueMcClanshan were.

There is a certain type of gay who LOVES the Golden Girls. Think Ross Matthews. Or Clay Aiken. Kind of common, not exactly a blazing intellect. Thinks the fact of him being gay alone makes him utterly fascinating, but really, he's just dull in many respects. This kind of gay would not enjoy Maude.
Now, I can enjoy the Golden Girls. But I recognize it was pretty limited. Those ladies were talented, and often rose above mediocre, repetitive scripts.
Maude was a better show. That is not to say that every episode was a home run. Maude had its share of middling episode as well. But when Maude was good, it was very good. Some episodes were like mini plays. And some story arcs were ambitious and very well done. Plus, fine performances from Arthur, Bill Macy, and Connie Bain.
So, I have no idea if you'd like Maude. It depends on the kind of gay you are.

I think Bea's was the one of the best transitions in sitcom TV history from playing one character personality to the other. Maude and Dorothy are literally like 2 different people. Bea approached and inhabited each character uniquely, IMO.
Of course it helped that she was physically very different by the time GG came around; I think she had some of the most successful physical work done on face and body that anyone in show business had had done, plus GG was in the '80s with a different look, lighting, hair, makeup styling, and her being older.
But the little ticks uniting Maude and Dorothy are still there: Dorothy deadpan-slamming the door in front of someone she doesn't want to talk to or come into the house; the frustrated anger that comes out when someone she's in a scene with is doing or saying something that drives her nuts, etc. And I think that in GG, Dorothy's character pretty much perfected the look-away slow burn facial expression and timing better than anyone since Jack Benney.
Maude's a complete different character, very of her time and worth watching her acting, interaction with others, and personality within the framework of the show's themes, setting and ensemble characters she bounced off of in that. Plus Maude seemed filmed closer-up while Dorothy was usually filmed farther away, all little things that really facilitated making the distinction between the 2 iconic characters she played, helped also by the quite different show settings and years they aired.

Bea Arthur's take on Maude is reason enough to watch it. She felt that GG was, for her, a step down, a fluffy sitcom with the occasional message, but often contrived. Maude had depth, purpose, and was socially relevant. If I'm not mistakn, it was the second show created by Norman Lear, riding high on the huge success that was All in the Family.

Bea Arthur as Maude. I have not seen that in ages. She had something, I mean, maybe others would disagree but she kind of had star quality. Something when she came on, you paid attention, watched. I really always felt she was actually better than the show but also felt it was good she had her own show.
Hated Barbeau. Always kind of the dirty joke, her breasts. That seemed to be the whole reason for her appearance and it was kind of like a kick back to Hefner or something, like I thought we were past this. But you know what, It’s still there.
And there is Bea, in that pose with her breasts hanging out. Will she ever, will WE ever get past it?

by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 5, 2023 3:06 AM |
I prefer Maude, as every episode takes you on a wild ride to someplace. It is an acquired taste. There was abortion, a sexual assault of Vivian, and an attempted rape of Maude all done for laughs in the first 2 seasons alone. The topics were baked into the show, not used as one liners like GGs. More depth, darkness and yes hammy acting galore.
Even Esther would ham it up with the others when the scenes called for it, and Adrianne's boobs stole plenty of the scenery around her.
I showed it to some friends of mine recently who never knew it existed, and they seemed to enjoy it a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 5, 2023 3:50 AM |
Dorothy and Maude WERE two very different characters. Maude was more brash, outspoken. Dorothy had a softness and gentleness to her. It IS like watching to different people, which is an amazing accomplishment when you consider how distinct Beatrice Arthur's look was.
Here are the kinds of gays that would LOVE Golden Girls: Ross Matthews, Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, Perez Hilton, Frankie Grande, Richard Simmons.
Here are the kinds of gays that would prefer Maude: Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, Pete Buttigieg.
Again, Golden Girls was fine. It has its place. The first couple of seasons were funny. But it became very repetitive, very quickly. If I meet a gay guy who tells me it's his favorite show, I know to keep my distance.
Maude followed along in the vein of All in the Family, and actually tired to top them. The abortion episode was groundbreaking. And the troubles between Maude and Walter, fueled by his drinking problem, were handled very seriously and very well by two outstanding actors.
That said, I 100% agree that the casting of Adrienne Barbeau as Maude's daughter was a mistake. They could have explored some interesting story lines, but the writers knew she wasn't up to it, so she just kinda sat there. They should've kept Marcia Rodd who played Carol in the backdoor pilot of Maude. She was a much better fit, and a better actress. Also, they never got a maid that worked as well as Florida did in the role.

Maude was slower, louder & more boring than the GG which is why the 80s show is better loved.
Maude had its moments including the episode where Bain's character wanted to shut down the local gay bar.

I think Maude and Dorothy were 2 completely different characters.
Dorothy’s insecurities and the fact that she was the only one who hadn’t found a good husband was what drove her story. And so Bea played her in a more vulnerable way.
I don’t think Dorothy was loud like Maude. Maude was loud. Dorothy was just easily irritated.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 9, 2023 7:00 AM |
R42 Dorothy was a much more real relatable character - but yet bitter and sardonic enough that Bea could bring in all her best Bea-isms.
No one on EARTH was like Maude in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 9, 2023 7:33 AM |
Maude could be really depressing and unpleasant (abortion, depression, alcoholism), and so many of the episodes were “two-handers,” i.e. just her and Bill Macy doing a 2nd-rate Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. The garish 70s color scheme is also hard to stomach nowadays.
I never understood why the opening credits features the George Washington bridge to NJ when Maude’s supposed to live in Westchester County.

Did Bea’s pussy stink? Well did it???
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 9, 2023 12:26 PM |
Maude could be extremely plodding and heavy-handed. If someone prefers the laugh-a-minute GG to Maude, I don't think it's necessarily a personality indicator. I hope the person upthread was joking when they said Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal were the kind of people who'd prefer the former to the latter. At the end of the day, you want to watch a sitcom to laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 9, 2023 1:56 PM |
I’m amused at the thought that Tennessee Williams or Gore Vidal (!) would have preferred Maude’s starchy moralizing and plodding pace to GG’s light-footed joke-a-minute style. The truth is they probably would have hated both, and it’s ludicrous to pin some intellectual badge on a preference for Maude. More than anything it depends what year you were born. I think you probably had to be born before 1945 or so for Maude to feel novel. I also think it’s undeniable that GG has a queer sensibility that is nowhere present in Maude.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 9, 2023 2:18 PM |
Maude maybe better written but it's really quite dated. GG seems ageless and probably will still be decades from now. It consistenly is getting new fans from current younger generation.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 10, 2023 2:08 AM |
I'm a big fan of GG and so I didn't really like Maude the first time I watched it. But it grew on me and now I love it. It's far more theatrical than GG and tackles some very serious issues like abortion, alcoholism and suicide. It's completely different from GG so if you love GG it doesn't mean you'll love Maude. Now about Bea's feud with Betty White. I've come to realize over the years that the main reason Bea wasn't that fond of Betty was because Betty did not come from theatre. Bea loved and worshipped actors who came from the theatre like Angela Lansbury. Rue and Estelle came from theatre but Betty was a 100% tv personality and I'm sure that's why Bea couldn't respect her as much.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 12, 2023 6:19 PM |
GG and Maude is apples to oranges, GG was not an "issues" show.
Maude (form what I've seen of it) was THE "issues" show, and those don't really date well unless they've got universal appeal like All in the Family.

Now I'm sure Betty was passive aggressive, but I'm also sure it would be very difficult to work with someone like Bea on the regular for 7 straight years without having to act out in some way. Also, Bea tried to get guest stars fired for chewing gum. What a dick...may she rest in peace.

I started reewatching Maude again last month when AntennaTV started the series from season 1 / episode 1. The last time I watched, I was a child of 8 years old and most of the humor (if not all) went right over my head in 1972. However, I recall my parents and grandparents watching the show each Tuesday night and laughing as though there was nothing funnier on TV (they were also big fans of 'All In The Family', 'MTM', 'Carol Burnett Show').
Now I appreciate the humor of 'Maude' - and she is indeed funny. Some of the topics and scripts have not aged well, but her performance certainly has. Keep in mind, Norman Lear fell in love with her when he saw her on the Broadway stage - and realized her strengths from the stage. So in a sense, he did write the show as 'theater' instead of 'television' with Bea as a lead actress, and the others in supporting roles.
She is different than Dorothy of GG. GG was not written as 'theater' for Arthur, but as 'television'. It's an ensemble piece, not a lead actress piece of theater.

Bea had some great tits on Maude. Then her husband left her and she had them chopped off. Won't be needing these anymore!!! She looked completely titless on the first few seasons of Golden Girls. Then she regained a little bit of weight in the last few seasons which made her look a lot better.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 13, 2023 12:48 PM |
Why are there so many people who didn't like Adrienne Barbeau's character? Even Bea said that she loved Adrienne but Marcia Rodd might have been a better choice to play her daughter because she had a mouth like Maude. I thought Adrienne was perfectly cast because her character Carol was so different from her mother. She was the calm, sane one in the family. When Maude was hysterical, she calmed her down. I don't understand all the hate for Carol.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 13, 2023 2:32 PM |
The character of Carol was highly unlikeable (thanks to Barbeau's portrayal of her), and really a waste of screen time. All she did was sit at the bar, spurt out a few words while she rolled her eyes, and then exit through the front door, or exit up the staircase. They should've written her character (and her son's character) as two of them living on their own and visiting Maude occasionally.
That said, it would've been interesting to see her return and work with Bea and Rue as Dorothy's daughter on 'The Golden Girls' ten years later. And Bill Macy would have been an interesting choice to play Stanley. (Conrad Bain would have been an even better choice).

I prefer Maude. I'm old enough to have seen both shows in first run, and I thought Golden Girls was okay but kind of lame. I turn off Golden Girls reruns now.
Maude could do goofy episodes when it wanted to. One of my favorites is the one in which Maude's punchbowl gets broken, and each person tells a different version of what happened, with the stories told in flashbacks. Rue is great in that one, and it also features DL heartthrob Lyle Waggoner. It is almost a direct copy of the All in the Family episode about the refrigerator repairman, in which they do the same thing.

by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 13, 2023 10:04 PM |
Bea really needed to get over herself and grow up. The Golden Girls was her only real success after Maude, and if it wasn’t for that show then she would barely be remembered today. The reason the show worked so well is because there were four great characters, a full 30 minutes a just Bea bellowing away like a distressed cow in an empty shipping container would have been far too much.
She was paid a shit load more money than the other three, the show was a huge success, the workload was shared. Why couldn’t she just be happy instead of trying to get people fired for wearing a baseball cap back to front, or because they were chewing gum. She sounded like a complete nightmare to work with.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | April 14, 2023 9:51 AM |
Maude has too many “two-handers,” episodes with just Maude and Walter. Also why the need for a housekeeper if you don’t have young kids or pets? And why do the credits show a car driving over the GW bridge to New Jersey if Maude lives in westchester?! Probably the best TV theme song of the ‘70s, though.

I've told this before on DL but it's worth repeating because it speaks to Arthur's ingrate, testy nature. Remember her one woman show on B'way, c. 2003? Bea's publicist set it up and the powers that be at Next Magazine set up a photo shoot/interview for what would be a cover story. The shoot and the interview were held at that big prop house that was over on the west side in the 20s. Not sure if it's still there or not.
John Polly was the editor-in-chief at Next, and it was his interview and his story to write. So they're at the prop house, and they're well into the Q and A. I've known John since 1994, when we worked at Genre Magazine in Los Angeles, and he's interviewed celebes and covered pop culture since then if not before that. He's not a rookie. Never-the-less, with Bea he got a bit flustered, and a long-winded question was meandering all over the place. Before he could finish, she interrupted, agitated. "My dear boy, is that a question, or are you just prattling on???"
"I'm afraid I am," he humbly replied as he continued with the interview. And John can take a joke, so rather than take offense, he found it amusing and it ran as part of the interview.

Bea was a great entertainer, but she didn't seem to always appreciate the gift of Golden Girls' success.

I wish that I could havelicked Bea’s titties.

R96 totally agree. If I were Betty i would have kicked her in the balls.

Any rumours about Bea and Angela Lansbury? I watched all of Bea's interviews she gave in 2001 to Archive of American Television and she said she wanted Angela for her special in 1980 but the network wanted Rock Hudson. She hated doing Mame with Lucille Ball because Lucille was a clown and Bea wanted Angela. She seemed to love/worship Angela like no other.

R108 Are you suggesting Bea and Angela were lesbians together?

R109 I'm asking if there are any rumours that their friendship was more than a friendship?

R110 I don't think so. But feel free to start a few. This is DL after all.

I wish they would release more GG bloopers and some Maude bloopers. I've never seen any bloopers from Maude which is strange. I'd also like to see some backstage footage from both shows. I liked this video from TMZ. I'm sure they have many more. Estelle used to tell jokes all the time.

R116 Thank you. I've started watching the episodes again. I watched most of them when they aired in the 1970s, and I watched them all when they came out on DVD a number of years ago. For anyone who thinks "Maude" is not relevant to today, listen in season 1 episode 2 to the angry and almost violent rant from Maude's conservative neighbor Arthur Harmon (played by Conrad Bain) about the lack of morality (including homosexuality) in 1972. Then there are the episodes about Maude possibly having a newly legal abortion. You will get an even clearer understanding of how far backwards the US has been sliding.

Pluto TV has the final two seasons of “Maude” and the episodes are hilarious. IMO, funnier than “Golden Girls.” The 70s vibe and morals are fascinating as every cast member makes out with someone who isn’t their spouse - including their best friends - and always seem on the edge of adultery. The 70s were wild.
Highly recommend “Maude.”
Also, Bea never shows her bare neck in any episode. Ever. There’s always a scarf or turtleneck or something obscuring it. I assume she thought it made her look fat.

I do think Maude can be hilarious but there aren’t enough feel good moments like in the Golden Girls. Some episodes can be cold and harsh.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | May 21, 2025 11:20 PM |
What never made sense about “Maude” was her age. When the show started, she was a 47-year-old woman with a nine-year-old grandson. Not only is that barely believable, she and Vivian often reminisce about their wild college days together.
Did she just move her daughter into the dorms with her?
Bea must have brought the same continuity editors to “The Golden Girls,” which would explain the messy inconsistencies on both shows.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | May 21, 2025 11:26 PM |
R121 someone made the claim that the Golden Girls writers flubbed when they stated Dorothy also had a consistency as she lived with Jean in the dorms while already given birth to Michael.
However, I went back and watched and I believe they were just friends during college. I could have missed a line, especially if it was edited out on Hallmark for time.

New Jersey is a much better maid than Florida.

One thing I love about “Maude” is the copious boozing. Her living room bar was akin to the kitchen table on “The Golden Girls.” Every important conversation or event was centered around the bar as the numerous cocktails flowed.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | May 22, 2025 12:28 AM |
I’m not sure how Walter and Arthur (Conrad Bain’s character) didn’t drop dead from liver failure with all the cocktails and shots they had.

R4 Maude, full episodes are on youtube free. I watch it whenever ive seen GG episodes way too many times. I was a kid when GG aired and lived it. Only heard of Maude in recent years. Its just nice to have something 'new' with Bea AND Rue in it.

I've never understood the DL queens' obsession with that middlebrow senior-citizen fraufest GG. "Maude" is infinitely funnier with an actual bite, and Arthur was never better.

Carol was a very unappealing character. A lazy mooch who offered nothing but eye rolls and women’s lib platitudes while living rent free with her mother at 30.
She was the only really weak character. The others were all outstanding. Bea was electric in every episode, unrecognizable from the half-asleep loser Dorothy from season 7 of “GG.” Maude would have eaten that bitch for lunch.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | May 22, 2025 1:09 AM |
Carol had a well-paying job and took care of herself as well as her child. I believe she worked in an office. She wasn't a mooch.

There’s dialog on “Maude” that wouldn’t make it past the first round of censors today. There’s an episode where Maude is robbed and the intruders leave her bound and gagged. After, Vivian repeatedly asks Maude if they “abused” her with an almost horny excitement (they did not “ abuse” her). She does this repeatedly during the episode, almost like Maude was keeping a sexy secret from her.
That shit would have social media exploding today as the digital torches and pitchforks came out. It’s fascinating to see how we’ve become more conservative and sensitive than we were 50 years ago.
The 70s were such an interesting era on TV and “Maude” is an excellent time capsule if that period.

Not sure what R129 is banging on about by saying Maude's daughter uttered "women’s lib platitudes," since the character of Maude herself was a feminist, which was the whole premise of the show, including its theme song,

R8 I only recently discovered Esther Rolle on Maude...
I never watched Maude back in the day, but Esther Rolle had some great moments in clips I was watching.

One of my favorite things about Maude is the art on the walls. Is there a list somewhere with the paintings?

The older I get the more I prefer “Maude” to “GG.” “Maude” is consistently high quality for all six seasons. The last few seasons of “GG” became a parody of itself and the characters became caricatures.
Unlike Dorothy, who never stopped whining about her divorce, Maude wore her numerous ex-husbands as badges of honor. She also fancied herself an irresistible temptation to men and the way Bea played it, you believed it. No ugly jokes here.
If you enjoyed early Dorothy on “GG” - not the pathetic lonely heart of later years - then you will love “Maude.” She’s like Dorothy’s super-confident, hilarious, take-no-prisoners sister.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | May 22, 2025 2:08 AM |
Also, Maude avoided her annoying mother at all costs while Dorothy had a sick, co-dependent relationship with hers.

Maude wouldn’t have had half the issues she had if she had just shut up and listened to Walter.

Maude was a bit too strident for me.
