ASMR

Every single GenZ Vlogger talks about this in their videos, or makes reference to it.

I've never really heard of it before, nor do I still understand it.

What in the fuck are these idiots talking about??

by Anonymousreply 54March 22, 2023 11:22 AM

It's just videos of shit with the levels cranked so you can hear every little sound. It ruins a lot of videos. There are some weird people out there who like to beat off to the sound of other chewing their food I guess.

by Anonymousreply 1February 2, 2023 10:22 PM

I'm an INFJ

by Anonymousreply 2February 2, 2023 10:26 PM

I fucking hate it. It agitates me so much. It seems to be a requirement for cooking videos on YouTube, and that trend needs to die. I remember there was a trend in TV commercials in the early aughts to have hyper articulated sounds, and I hated it then, and I hate it now.

I don't need to hear you scrape the blade of a knife across the cutting board before you cut anything. Also - bad for your knife edge.

Also, you don't need to spin eggs across the counter every time you use an egg.

ASMR = Annoying Sounds Made Regularly

by Anonymousreply 4February 2, 2023 10:54 PM

Even better, Annoying Sounds Made Repetitively

by Anonymousreply 5February 2, 2023 10:57 PM

It means nothing. It's something made up, something nasty for disturbed people. Chewing sounds are nasty, "they" like it.

by Anonymousreply 6February 2, 2023 10:59 PM

R2, so is Fiona Apple. The rarest Myers Briggs type.

by Anonymousreply 7February 2, 2023 11:14 PM

Put on headphones and try this one.

DMSR was one of my best songs.

by Anonymousreply 10February 3, 2023 1:50 PM

R8 knocked me out immediately.

by Anonymousreply 11February 3, 2023 9:54 PM

This guy is really hot and masc.

by Anonymousreply 12February 3, 2023 10:21 PM

Gentle Whispering AMSR at r8 is the bomb. I'd like to have her as a friend, honestly. She's Russian, and really pretty down to earth. I haven't listened to her in a long time but at the height of my insomnia, I listened to a lot of her vids to help me get at least a few hours of sleep, she knocked me out.

Latte ASMR is not bad either.

R1! Please, NO!

by Anonymousreply 14February 3, 2023 10:39 PM

R12, he’s like 19 and at his mama’s house. So hot? Masculine yes.

by Anonymousreply 15February 4, 2023 1:00 AM

Holy shit. It’s like re-parenting.

What if you could get really calming, positive comments from a smart asmr therapist?

While that's a big part of it, there is a lot more to it than that.

There are oddly satisfying videos of people cleaning rugs. Watching them clean the rugs and seeing them get cleaner is strangely rewarding.

There are also videos of things like ear cleaning (watching them take out HUGE chunks of ear wax is both gross and engaging) and a whole series of "hair care" where you watch black women get their hair straightened and cut. There a really popular channel where a woman does "historical" cooking and uses 200 year old methods.

^^^I make no comment about whether it makes any sense or whether it has any merit, merely reporting for factual accuracy.

by Anonymousreply 19February 4, 2023 1:21 AM

So, I'll answer this as someone who watches ASMR, as I don't think a real answer has been given yet.

The origin of ASMR was a (relatively) small group of people who, through the power of the Internet, realized that they experienced a tingling sensation when certain people whispered or talked in a certain way. This quickly expanded to other sounds. Other "triggers". This expanded further into general relaxation, the concept of "very satisfying" and calming videos, help with sleeping, etc. Today it's a large umbrella and people watch ASMR vids for different reasons. Many people don't get those tingles. They just find it relaxing. And there is money to be made for doing something that almost anyone can do (disclaimer: if they put in the effort, of course. You have to be willing to do weird shit all the day and edit that shit, especially the audio. It's a lot of work, which I can't imagine would be intellectually stimulating.

Of course, there is the sexual angle too. Some definitional jackoff to the attractive ones. I'd rather fuck or watch porn, but who am I to judge?

My personal story: When I was a boy, whenever my great-grandmother would talk, not to everyone else, but to me, she used this soft, almost whisper like voice It gave me the most pleasant sensation on my head and neck. NOT the same as goosebumps from music. The closest thing I can compare it to is using one of those scalp massagers. Not 100% like that, but very close. For years, I thought it was just one of those things, until I came across a few vids on YouTube. Note, I'm a millennial, and watched a lot of YouTube when younger.

I miss you, (great) grandma. You were the only decent person on that side of the family. At least you lived until almost 100. Sometimes the good don't die young.

Maria!

by Anonymousreply 22February 4, 2023 1:36 AM

I find some of these ASMR videos very relaxing and they do help me to take a nap if I'm sleep-deprived & have anxiety.

Some of these YouTubers call everything ASMR and it's not all ASMR.

For example, eating sounds. That's actually unpleasant to a lot of people, including me. There's a guy who does cooking demonstrations that I like, but then he tastes his food and makes these disgusting smacking sounds. Makes you appreciate people who can eat silently.

by Anonymousreply 23February 4, 2023 1:45 AM

I like only the ones with cutting hair (sans any talking) and the ones where they're cutting through kinetic sand or soap. And I agree - chewing videos are nasty as fuck!

by Anonymousreply 24February 4, 2023 7:09 AM

I don't understand the young people these days.

Here's one with a hot cobbler - and we're not talking pies.

It is not an age thing. Whispering is creepy and irritating. They equate being irritated with "tingly feelings". Disturbed people. Mouth breathers who chew with their mouth open.

by Anonymousreply 27February 4, 2023 5:15 PM

Look up the term ASMR on Google. I did. It's a string of words put together. It means nothing.

by Anonymousreply 28February 4, 2023 5:20 PM

Are you kidding. I'm should place headphones on to listen to someone whisper in broken English? They literally don't understand that irritation and tingly sensations associated with pleasure are two different experiences.

by Anonymousreply 29February 4, 2023 5:24 PM

Some of you posters seem like you're really on the edge, about to be triggered.

Maybe you should listen to some calming ASMR and relax.

by Anonymousreply 30February 4, 2023 5:30 PM

[quote]calming ASMR

No such thing.

by Anonymousreply 31February 4, 2023 5:37 PM

who the fuck thinks to record something like this?

I'd rather watch Bob Ross

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 32February 4, 2023 9:50 PM

That is right, r32. I watched Ross since I was a kid, very relaxing and no "tingles".

by Anonymousreply 33February 4, 2023 9:54 PM

I can't suspend disbelief enough to get into these. All I can think about is what it must look like from a side view. I've been in a psych ward, I don't need to see it monetized.

by Anonymousreply 34February 4, 2023 11:02 PM

I am 43 and LOVE it. My ASMR person of choice is TingTing on Youtube. Trish Paytas is pretty good too.

TingTing has 2 million subscribers , has basically stopped doing new videos, and probably banks 200K+ from her channel.

by Anonymousreply 35February 4, 2023 11:06 PM

I follow a bunch of ASMR artists on YouTube to help me drift off to sleep. It's great. Not into the mouth sounds or mukbang ASMR. But soft talking, tapping, and light triggers knock me out. A lot of cute twinks seem to do it and the shirtless Turkish massage videos are pretty popular at the moment.

What's so "ASMR" about his videos?

MOST RETARDED thing ever. Why don't we just give millennials and Gen ZZZ pacifiers and the security blankets they so desperately long for in their safe spaces?

by Anonymousreply 38March 15, 2023 4:50 PM

The only ASMR I listen to is where a YouTuber walks around his or her city with a camera in the rain. I'm not sure rain is ASMR but listening to the rain is really relaxing

by Anonymousreply 39March 15, 2023 8:01 PM

That's an acceptable sound of nature. NOT RETARD ASMR

by Anonymousreply 40March 15, 2023 8:36 PM

^^^They always bill rain videos as ASMR.

by Anonymousreply 41March 15, 2023 9:14 PM

They also call simple tips "hacks", so don't put much stock into what THEY label things.

by Anonymousreply 42March 15, 2023 9:33 PM

STUPID THREAD SET UP. It takes 30 seconds to learn what ASMR is.

by Anonymousreply 43March 15, 2023 9:51 PM

Are you kidding me? It's amazing (although I'm more into soft spoken than whispered, which annoys me as I can't make out the words, and mouth sounds). Favorire channel at the moment is Asmr Amuse. Check it out, her videos are terribly soothing, they will put you to sleep in no time!

by Anonymousreply 44March 15, 2023 9:58 PM

If you don't even know what it is, why are you calling them idiots?

by Anonymousreply 45March 15, 2023 9:59 PM

Maangchi's videos are definitely ASMR.

Especially when she puts the paste on the cucumbers.

It sounds so squishy and gross. I hate it!

I’m 33 and HATE ASMR. The tingling sensations are at best uncomfortable and at worst painful. I used to think I was the only one who felt a physical sensation from the sound (I distinctly remember my first time feeling it was as a teenager in a pharmacy standing near a Russian couple whispering), and was flabbergasted when I heard that others not just felt it but liked it. It also explains why I always disliked whispering in general. Two of my biggest pet peeves in film/tv is when two characters are alone yet are whispering, and when actors whisper because they think it seems intense.

by Anonymousreply 48March 21, 2023 2:26 AM

I prefer slapping faces

by Anonymousreply 49March 21, 2023 2:31 AM

I love R49 's idea... the slapping anyway. I would personally love to slap the shit out of every ASMR performer and fan.

Shades of the violent sushi hater who not only hates sushi but all people who eat sushi or talk about sushi or think about sushi or live within 10 miles of a sushi restaurant. Why don't you calm down there, R27? I say that as someone who doesn't experience any tingles at all (unfortunately, it seems quite pleasant according to my sister who is addicted to it!).

by Anonymousreply 51March 21, 2023 6:41 AM
